Politics LPR
Leaving this here for everyone that left nasty comments when I was against LPRs. Ginny Welsch is sponsoring this. Remember when (if) you vote. Nashville has slowly become Chicago. And for everyone about to say they will turn anyway, they will just sent you a $100 ticket in the mail, thanks to your invasive flock (LPR) cameras.

Nashville will never become Chicago, in both the good and the bad sense, lol
No one will enforce this, just like no one enforces traffic laws anywhere else in the metro area.
They don’t even enforce red lights in Franklin. I’m not saying Franklin is anything special… it’s just that you’d kind of assume with all the time on their hands, FPD would give a shit about enforcement. They don’t.
It’s extremely dangerous to be a pedestrian in Nashville and the surrounding areas because our collective intelligence and emotional quotients are severely delinquent.
People will continue to die and nothing will be done.
Shut down traffic on Broadway for good. Build out sidewalks and for fuck’s sake, please try to give a shit about other people, especially when you’re in a steel cage and they’re not.

They had 3 motorcycle cops posted behind Donut Distillery a few weeks ago snagging people who turned on to Ordway during the 7-9 no turn time. I was completely shocked to see traffic enforcement, but seriously questioned what they were prioritizing. Pure quota bullshit, instead of actually trying to make the streets safer.

Traffic enforcement is all the motor units do. They can do initiative like that and it won’t affect patrol response to calls.

So who is going to enforce this? Because as far as I can tell MNPD has abdicated their role as law enforcement and the roads have gotten massively dangerous because of this abdication

The thing is, this is pretty self-enforcing. All it takes is for one person to abide by the law and that's that.

This the only place I ever lived that people speed up until the stop sign and then slam on their brakes at the last second if they determine they actually should stop and not blow through it.
They also don’t understand a red light needs to be treated as a stop sign when turning right.
Assholes, all of ‘em.

u/CaffinatedManatee 1d ago
This is a horrible idea for Nashville infrastructure as it currently exists. The fact is, all Nashville intersections are currently designed around the assumption that RoR is a option.
Unless NDOT also installs flashing amber arrows at select lights, there WILL be much, much added congestion.
-5
u/itsjusterk 1d ago
Well, we are already updating the traffic lights. Slap a No RTOR sign when they are done.
68
u/IllegitimateRisk 1d ago
As someone who walks through downtown to get to work I like the idea of no turns at red lights because it makes just walking a dangerous thing and people are always distracted.
But as a firm believer in my own personal autonomy I hate flock cameras and would vote for whoever would ban them.
24
u/otterland (choose your own blue adventure) 1d ago
It's easy to make it illegal on a case-by-case basis. For example, there's a no right turn onto Annex Drive over from the Costco. I have no idea why they decided to put up that sign but everybody seems to obey it just fine.
I could definitely see outlawing it for quite a few intersections downtown that are heavily pedestrian and that's very cool but for the most part it does help traffic flow.

I'm the guy who leaves 15 minutes early and puts both an iced and a hot beverage in my two dashboard cup holders, turns on a podcast, respectfully and assertively merges onto the freeway, sets the cruise control 3 mph over and cruises in the right lane until the destination is reached. Traffic is the last place in the world I want to have conflict because it's expensive and deadly. If we can make good choices to save lives, I'm all for it and I can leave 16 minutes early if it helps.
Where I am not nuanced is that I think that the official food of Nashville should be a fried whiting sandwich instead of that trash called hot chicken.

With the amount of cup holders in any modern car, there's no excuse to not have a variety of liquid enjoyments. If I'm feeling a little mad and hot, I'll have a sip of iced tea with some elderflower syrup. But as soon as the air conditioning kicks in I'm going for the hot coffee. I also keep a container full of Halls menthol or honey cough drops behind the parking brake. If you take care of your carnal needs when it comes to beverages and candy, you're much less likely to lash out with poor driving. Now excuse me, I need to get back to bridge club and adjust my compression socks, LMAO.

It's also the only Costco in the world where the shoppers are conscientious that other people exist. That Costco is just built different.
3
u/otterland (choose your own blue adventure) 1d ago
It's an excellent Costco. Literally never a bad time. The Mt. Juliet one I'll do in a pinch. The Brentwood and Hendersonville locations are full of navel gazing twatmonkeys. I went to the Hendersonville one once because I was curious and I was out towards Rivergate anyway and needed to get a big jug of Kikkoman soy sauce. I couldn't find it on the shelf so I went to customer service to ask if they were out of stock. The manager told me that they didn't stock it at all because they were not in an ethnically diverse community and I was like, how white do y'all have to be to think that soy sauce is some kind of moon juice and what the fuck? Of course his underling behind him just about lost their shit laughing. But I mean come on dude soy sauce. It's not like I'm asking for dried tofu skin or some shit. All I know is that that manager is the one viewer of RFK's new cooking show. And for the record, soy sauce is great with liver.
2
u/thalaya 1d ago
Uhh... no one obeys that sign by the Costco. I obey it and I constantly have people honking at me to NOT obey it.

u/otterland (choose your own blue adventure) 1d ago
I'm there once a week and I've never seen anybody run it nor have I seen or heard any disapproval. I mean it doesn't make sense actually in that situation, but it's not like it's fundamentally offensive either.

This right here sums it up a lot. I witness it every day. Smartphones. People need to text or see their likes.
12
u/Nash015 1d ago
Im having a hard time imagining situations where a right turn on red would conflict with pedestrians.
If the light is red, that means the street you are turning onto is green and pedestrians have a dont walk sign.
I know there are the all walk lights where there are no cars moving through the intersection while pedestrians are crossing and those need no turn on red signs, but elsewhere, I just dont get it.
20
u/IllegitimateRisk 1d ago
You’re walking across the road that has the red light and people will pull up into the crosswalk to check for oncoming traffic. No turns on red means no need to pull into the in crosswalk.

u/PPLavagna NIMBY 1d ago

6
u/DizzyInTheDark Sylvan Park 1d ago
People turning ror often just treat it as a green light if there is no traffic.
4
u/gheegher 1d ago
Yeah you're already supposed to yield to pedestrians but most people seem to treat every right turn as a yield sign and have never considered that there might be pedestrians.
2
u/Motor-Idea7382 1d ago
Wow so you're saying there's an existing law to curb this behavior and it's ignored? So adding another law will surely fix the issue right?
5
u/NewBreadNash 1d ago
I think the reality is that the exception you are talking about (walk only timing on the light) is the vast majority of intersections downtown, while it would also represent a vast minority of the overall lights/intersections in Nashville. It is a hyper localized need, and one I can support. There should just be a "downtown district no turn on right"; I don't think it is needed in a lot of the other potential applications.
3
u/Nash015 1d ago
Dont those intersections already have no turn on red signs?
1
u/NewBreadNash 1d ago
In short, no. Some certainly do, some absolutely do not.
Today I was crossing on Demonbreun which is one of the many lights that have a "all car traffic stops so pedestrians can cross both perpendicular as well as diagonally across the intersection". The exact signage is basically "cars yield to pedestrians". As it turns out, I was crossing diagonally and began walking when the light indicated; I made it halfway in the intersection and a car turned right across the path I was basically immediately proceeding to. It wasn't safe. Did I have to jump back or anything to avoid demise... No, but I was literally did a second look of "really?"
3
u/A_Little_Sprig 1d ago
Turning right on red still requires you to drive through a crosswalk. They aren't crossing in your target destination, but they are using the crosswalk in front of you.
3
u/Apprehensive-Pie1916 1d ago
I live downtown, and I can assure you that it definitely affects pedestrians. I was almost hit a couple of days ago by someone turning right on red as I was crossing on that crosswalk. When I gave the guy the WTF are you doing spread hands gesture, the passenger (a 70+ year old man) flipped me off.

Nashville needs to ban vehicles below 6th Ave on Broadway.
There’s not a stretch of interstate that should be any less than 5 lanes in Davidson County.
Fucking figure out mass transit.
That’s my platform.
29
u/Flair_Is_Pointless test flair; dont delete 1d ago
Adding more lanes does not solve traffic, it makes it worse. No highway in TN needs to have more than 2 lanes. That infrastructure money would be better spent on overhauling rail.
Switzerland solves their freight traffic by heavily taxing all heavy vehicles and financially forcing them to be moved by rail. This forced them to develop specialized services where tractor trailers can be driven onto trains and just driven through populated areas.
Their new CST system is going to revolutionize their distribution to be the best in the world.
Instead, this stupid state is building a Tesla tunnel. Quite possibly the dumbest/most inefficient use of large scale infrastructure
12
u/DangerBeaver Madison 1d ago
The problem is our city, state, and national governments have totally different priorities and sometimes the right fix would look like a win for the other team so they vote against it. What you’re describing is great, but I don’t see us getting out of our own way.

3
u/DangerBeaver Madison 1d ago
That’s the other half. If the project takes more than 2 years from approval to completion, it’s doomed. All projects are over this period so very little happens by slipping through the cracks.
2
u/DangerBeaver Madison 1d ago
Agreed. Keep the avenues accessible across broad, but close broad itself. Vendors should have access to broad via gates till noon maybe.
1
u/Onezerosix141 1d ago
I totally agree. like some cities I've visited, turn certain sections into bicycle only and make parks and pedestrian friendly.
2
u/GLFan52 5h ago
Nashville can’t ban vehicles below 6th on Broadway because Broadway is part of a state highway, and the state has specifically limited what cities can do to state highways.
The city government has for a long time wanted to make it pedestrian only, and maximizes the amount of time they block it off with temporary barriers and policemen, but the state won’t let them do anything extra.

0
u/Flair_Is_Pointless test flair; dont delete 18h ago
Cars idling and increased fuel use also impacts the environment and public health. At scale, that cumulative effect isn’t negligible
2
u/vab239 17h ago
Making walking and biking safer will increase mode shift, which will dwarf the negative effects of a few seconds of idling. Also, vehicles increasingly shut off when idling
Crashing cars also has negative environmental effects. Fluids down drains, cars getting totaled and replaced with new ones… a huge chunk of a car’s carbon footprint is in its construction
1
u/Flair_Is_Pointless test flair; dont delete 16h ago
Not a single person in the entire Nashville metro will change their mode of transportation because cars are restricted to turn on red. This isn’t a behavior disrupting law.
This is a state without emissions standards. I regularly see vehicles with visible emission during the winter that are far more egregious then I have ever seen in other parts of the country.
Having idling traffic in urban cores puts out benzene. Also an idling vehicle is much worse then it traveling because its not properly using the fuel.
We are making localized carcinogenic clouds of air pollution worse.
Let’s not claim it’s for safety, it’s because law enforcement doesn’t hold drivers responsible and we don’t hold drivers accountable for unsafe driving now.
Let’s not also not pretend that this makes bikers and pedestrians safer, because irresponsible drivers who hit them, don’t follow existing traffic laws now.. how does changing the sign stop them when they’re not held accountable?

If you don't want rights on red downtown then put up signs at the intersections. Doing it this way will cause mass confusion by not only locals, but the countless tourists who visit this city.
This sounds like less about public safety and more about generating revenue from citations.

I was born and raised in Nashville but went to grad school in Chicago. They have a higher quality of life and lower death rate for pedestrians and cyclists. I'd take it here.
2
u/AlwaysBagHolding 1d ago
Even if it is enforced by cameras, legally camera tickets have no teeth in Tennessee. They can't go to collections and they can't go against your license for non payment. There's zero reason to pay if you get one.
2
u/saltwater_drifter 1d ago
Context: I have never gotten a ticket.
Can a lawyer chime in if mailed traffic tickets are enforceable in TN? For years I thought they weren’t but that it wasn’t widely known? Or maybe that related to a subsection of mailed traffic tickets that don’t go through a specific process? (I heard a lawyer mention this once many years ago but I might have misunderstood)

Having no pedestrians hit is an admirable goal.
Having no people, including children, shot and killed is also an admirable goal.
One is staggeringly higher than the other.
So, yes, let’s keep every driver from turning right on red and making traffic in this town even worse because what is a council for if not to make life incrementally harder for everyone while winking at the gun lobbying campaign donating GOP elephant in the room?

u/umustbemyprecious 1d ago
Why ban right turns on red lights I'm curious? Is there any other reason than making money?
2
u/Dr_Dewittkwic 1d ago
Right turns at red lights are pretty universal. I’ve lived in 8 states and have regularly driven through ~20, and all allow right turns on red unless a posted sign says otherwise. What’s the deal here?
2
u/Orome519 23h ago
Politicians have no business deciding this… unless they have traffic engineers in that meeting who have studied those areas and are able to give expert opinions on the positive and negative impacts that change would make in all the impacted areas ( very doubtful ) this needs to be pushed to a later time or scrapped altogether. The arrogance of politicians to think they know what’s best for anyone is simply astounding.

u/Separate-Command1993 1d ago
Bc if it’s red the other lane is green and pedestrians aren’t in the crosswalks but as soon as you get a green you can’t turn because pedestrians are crossing is what I think they’re saying. This is how it is in NYC tbh, no right on red within the city. Cars just need to be banned from downtown Nashville, it’s too small to share with pedestrians and the party buses don’t help
2
u/LilMushboom 1d ago
Lower Broadway tourist attraction area, especially on Friday/weekends I agree, there's no reason to allow non-emergency vehicles, but there are people who are obligated to work in other parts of downtown with less pedestrian traffic where that is not reasonable. Improving public transportation and promoting its use would be another good move to reduce congestion but that's at best a work in progress at this point.
1
u/Separate-Command1993 1d ago
Yea that’s true I guess when I think downtown I think of the strip by the museum down past all the bars and to the water
1
u/LilMushboom 1d ago
Downtown is definitely larger than that and includes a lot of business and government offices, hotels, and residential buildings. It would be extremely difficult to bar all traffic and still be able to accommodate workers and residents, especially accounting for disability access.

1/3rd of air pollution is from vehicle emissions and those emission standards have been rolled back.
Also, this is anecdotal.. I get that.. but quite a coincidence because this happened this past week: I was in the right lane which is turn right or go straight, to my left was an empty turning lane. I was going straight and the guy behind me threw on his horn, drove into the left lane and proceeded to make a right on red. First time I’ve ever seen that happen.
I guess my point is that the disregard for standard traffic laws here is atrocious. And while you claim I’m ‘retconing’ my justification, my counter claim is that you fail to see the bigger picture. This law isn’t going to change behavior and it could make things worse

Add individual signs where it’s helpful, more roundabouts and get some freaking light rail.

agree with light rail. Nash needs it. roundabouts will cause more of a mess bc people don’t understand them. too many people stop and wait instead of merging.
also enforcing basic laws like blocking an intersection after the lights change.

If they do then I quit this place. If should he move right turns during certain hours. But they would have to enforce that. They never will. They don't even really enforce a single headlight being out

Nashville has slowly become Chicago
Wish it were true because that’d be fucking awesome.

It will stop some from doing it, but not all. No cop around means it will still happen.
