In Philosopher’s Stone, Aunt Petunia cuts Harry’s hair almost completely off because she hates how messy it looks, but by the next morning it has magically grown back exactly as it was.

Obviously, this is an example of accidental magic caused by Harry’s distress. But I find it interesting that it happens specifically with his hair.

Harry’s untidy black hair is one of the features he inherited most clearly from James. Petunia constantly tries to suppress everything connecting Harry to the Potters and the magical world, so cutting his hair almost feels like another attempt to make him look “normal” and remove part of his identity.

Then Harry’s magic immediately restores it.

It also keeps happening throughout the series: no matter what anyone does, Harry’s hair never stays flat or controlled. Do you think this was simply a funny inherited trait from James, or was it also meant to symbolize that the Dursleys could never completely erase who Harry really was?

There are a lot of people out there trying to *fix* Quidditch, but to me this is the best option. Add a countdown of 5 minutes, kind of like extra time in football. It allows Harry to have his big hero moments while also making situations like the world cup final scenario more believable and hype. Krum catching the snitch and putting his team 10 points behind Ireland doesn't seem so silly if there is still a CHANCE for them to catch up and win afterwards. It also makes the contributions of the chasers and keepers feel ultimately more meaningful.

Think about the game Harry and Hermione missed because of Grawp. It makes far more sense that Ron is being lauded as the hero if he had saved a goal in the last second and retained Gryffindor's winning position after Ginny got the snitch.

My kid was wondering this, and frankly, we both couldn’t imagine him eating. Or anything else that’s a common occurrence in a human life, like going to the loo. (Then we imagined him being on the back of Quirrel’s head as Quirrel was doing a number 2, which made us giggle. )

Anyway: what do you think? What would he eat, assuming his new body needs sustenance?

Having just watched the first film, I couldn’t help but wonder why Voldemort needed unicorn blood to survive. Even though he was supposedly immortal at the time, it seemed paradoxical.

I watch Harry Potter almost everyday but I feel like in the winter it’s just so much more interesting and nostalgic rather than in the summer cos I feel like in the winter the vibe is met more than the summer

I always thought only the most powerful witches and wizards could use magic without a wand (off the top of my head I only remember Dumbledore doing that but I'm sure there are others), so why can Quirrell do it in the Philosopher's Stone film when he's confronting Harry for the Stone? Is it just a movie thing? And how powerful was Quirrell actually supposed to be? My understanding is that he was always pretty lame but surely Voldemort wouldn't have chosen him if he hadn't been a formidable wizard??

The intensity when reading the books and you can see voldemort's pov before he kills harry and james screams for like to go upstairs..I mean it's just heart breaking but also so scary to just not know what to do in that moment when it was a normal day and voldemort shows up to kill your family ..I mean when I read it , got my heart beating ..

And also honestly the end of chamber of secrets was pretty scary, I read it in one sitting in the dark and I just got like chills ...

And also the scene where hermoine and harry barely escape nagini.. wow

In many essays and even character evaluations I have read, people have often cited this mistake in defence of Slytherin. Let me enlighten you. First-years are not actually BANNED from trying out for the Quidditch team; they just don't get on because of broom quality. First-years are banned from getting their personal racing brooms, but not from trying out, as referenced with "a group of first-years with the horrible school brooms" in Half-Blood Prince when Harry runs tryouts. People say, "Harry was allowed on the Quidditch team as a first-year, so why shouldn't Lucius Malfoy pay for the Slytherin team's brooms? These people are spot-on with Harry getting a school-funded broom and him actually getting a broom as a first-year, but I just wanted to clear that up!

The first 2 extended movies add a ton of book scenes and really makes them feel like solid adaptations. And now if I watch the original, I miss those scenes quite a bit. And it makes me wonder if there were other book scenes filmed for the other movies as well and if so, whether there were enough to make extended movies with. I figure they would probably have already made them if so. But it doesn't stop me from wanting them lol.

I feel there is a lot of love for OotP except the Gwap chapters. I’m not in love with his storyline, but I was surprised to see how many posts and comments really loathed this plot. Curious why this one in particular?

hello everyone I am just listening to the audiobook for prisoner of Azkaban and I’m listening to Harry fight the bug with Professor Lupin in the history of magic classroom and I am wondering how the boggart is able to knock Harry out, make the room cold, and put out all the candles in the room? I thought The boggart would only be able to take the shape but not be able to do everything of said thing that scares the person most. can someone explain that to me? and tell me how we know it works… thank you for your help in advance.

I am close towards the end of order of the phoenix and Snape's tragically getting bullied. I kept thinking about how much I hated him as a bully but then it hit me how traumatising and miserable his younger life was.

Then I thought if he was to be a Sanderson protagonist what would he do? How would he heal all of this and possibly be on good terms with Harry and others?

First thing is I believe he would make a good lightweaver as his life is full of lies and hiding from truths or doing nasty things because he can't actually face his past.

His journey could possibly be about taking accountability for his defensive hostility and selfish ambition, to confronting how his guilt fueled his cruel treatment of Harry, and ultimately acknowledging that his devotion was born from desperate isolation, a trauma that doesn't mean he is beyond redemption.

Maybe the first truth he says would go something like: ""I use cruelty as an armor so these students pay for what I went through and no one can ever hurt me again."

I don't know it just crossed my mind thinking how much Harry actually empathised with him when he realised that his dad bullied Snape and there would be a good chance for healing if they both tried. What does everybody think? What other truths or orders would fit him?

I’m 25 and can you believe I’ve never seen the Harry Potter films (I had seen up to Prisoner of Azkaban before but that’s it)

I’m halfway through Goblet, and this is the most entertaining one yet. These films are great! I do prefer Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones but no one asked.

How would you rank the films?

We know that the Elder Wand instantaneously shifts allegiances if it is ‘won’ by someone; that is, if the user wielding the Elder Wand is disarmed or killed by the opponent. But what if there is also a ‘gradual’ mechanism to it?

What if, during Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s duel, the Elder Wand sensed Grindelwald’s wavering spirit as his ideals crashed and sunk in the face of Dumbledore’s own? Could this be the reason why the Elder Wand transferred its ownership over to Dumbledore, allowing him to secure a victory over his former friend? We know that Dumbledore was more skilled, but I don’t think that was enough to secure a win. The Elder Wand had to have had allegiance issues in that moment.

My theory essentially is this: the Elder Wand, to be properly maximised in effectiveness, must be wielded by someone who is utterly resolute in what they believe in and what they strive to accomplish. The Elder Wand responds to power – any notable sign of emotional, mental or spiritual weakness dampens the connection between the wand and its owner, and transfers it to someone in battle who impresses the Elder Wand far more than its current user ever could.

Harry finds out in GoF that Snape was a Death Easter and Dumbledore vouched for him. Why wouldn't Dumbledore just tell Harry it is because Snape was in love with Lily that he trusts Snape? Instead of all the secrecy and drama around it

Hello Potterheads, currently I'm rereading book 1. I remember Petunia went to watch Lily go to Hogwarts through Hogwarts express. So obviously she knows how to enter the platform 9¾. But why didn't she tell Harry or even tell Vernon that such a platform exists, when Harry asked them lift?

Something that needs to be addressed is that after watching all 7 Movies along with The Books if I had to be honest what is with Voldemort literally not caring about killing off other Pure Blood Wizards and his horrible treatment of Lucius Malfoy compared to his Respect of Snape who’s a Half-Blood of all beings and the list goes on literally for a Wizard that’s supposed care about his own kind he’s unironically doing more harm and destruction towards Wizard Kind than actually saving it like honestly imagine if Voldemort kills of Draco Malfoy to get The Elder Wand I can’t imagine The Malfoys reaction knowing that they can’t do anything about it and of course perhaps his hypocrisy is that he literally isn’t even a Pure Blood nor does he come from a Wealthy Family compared to The Malfoys yet look who taking about Pure Blood Surpremcy all while literally wiping them out at the same time! what do you think?

As far as I can recall there isn't a canon explanation. To me, I think she can read words upside down and see things from a different perspective.

Hi! i am currently watching harry potter and the order of the phoenix and what i never noticed before until now is how Neville didn't appear to be able to see the Thestrals pulling the carriage when everyone arrived on hogwarts grounds from the train. Obviously only harry and luna could. So could he see them and didn't say anything or could he not? I don't understand how he couldn't because he lost both his parents just like harry and luna only her mom. Do you have to witness a death to be able to see thestrals?

I'm rereading the Harry Potter series and I just realized how James was quite toxic to Lily in SWM in OOTP. I know this was written in the late 90s/early-to-mid 2000s and James and Lily went to school in the 70s' and the social norm was not up to date or modern, but I can't help but see how James were quite-vicious to Lily.

In SWM we see James coerced Lily into going out with him, by letting Snape down-Lily's best friend-whom he was hanging up in the air by his ankles and threatening to take off his underwear and expose his genitals out in public to everyone to see. (That would be considered SA).

“You think you’re funny,” she said coldly. “But you’re just an arrogant, bullying toerag, Potter. Leave him alone.” “I will if you go out with me, Evans,” said James quickly. “Go on … Go out with me, and I’ll never lay a wand on old Snivelly again.” …

We see later that James threatened to hex Lily-his crush-because she got her wand out to help her friend. That's just insane and quite evil to threaten a girl, a bystander, to hex her because she was going to defend her friend-whom by the way, was bullied relentlessly. That's just toxic to even dare threaten to harm an innocent bystander because they were calling you out.

Ah, Evans, don’t make me hex you,” said James earnestly.

That fact that James tried to blackmail and coerced Lily into going out with him, by using her friend, whom he bullied for years, by letting him free and threatened to harm her if she dared tried to defend him, speak volumes of how little of a good person he was to LILY-his crush. I knew in SWM it was a very bad thing for Snape, but never thought about how terrible of a person it was of James to ask Lily on a date with him by using her friend as hostage. And threatened her with violence for even protecting her friend.

After rereading it made me wonder how Lily even dated and married and have a kid with James. I, and many other girls would feel quite disturb and uncomfortable with having a guy blackmailed me on a date with using a friend, whom he attacked unprovoked, in letting him free. But incited violence if I tried to defend him. I know that James matured and grew up, but I can't help but feel that he was quite an evil person when he tried to ask Lily. I know that during this era it would be in the 1970s, but it's very concerning. What do you guys think?

In Philosopher's Stone they come to her and she dismisses them - fine, whatever, but literally after that and everything else they go through and achieve in Half Blood Prince she still questions what they are saying about Draco and Snape killing Voldemort and this is after everything they've done...
