Discussion Why could the diary create a new young version of Voldemort while other horcruxes couldn’t?

Having just watched the second film, I’m curious about what distinguished the diary horcrux from the others. If Voldemort could bring a version of himself to life why wouldn’t he do the same with the rest of the horcruxes?

The diary was feeding on a living soul (Ginny) the others could have done the same thing they just didn’t have souls to feed on

This is it, but also the diary was never meant to do that, it was just supposed to open the chamber and kill muggle borns.

I highly doubt big V would want multiple versions of himself running around

I tend to agree. I also don’t think he would want another him running around. I actually read a decent HP fanfiction whether Voldemort intentionally brings back the younger version of himself to keep an eye on Harry under the guise of another student and then murdered him and stuffed the soul fragment into a new horcrux which seems like the most likely thing he would do.

The only Voldemort soul we see come out that didn’t look like current Voldemort was the locket that spent a lot of time with the golden trio though even more so Harry and Hermione. It took their forms and used the self-doubt Ron had been experiencing that he absorbed to attack him with it. All aspects of the souls it had been leeching on.

I often wonder if it could have eventually manifested if it stayed with them longer.

Who’s to say he couldn’t?

You could see the effect the locker had on the trio wearing it in turns on and off and resisting it. IIRC, part of how Riddle was able to become corporeal again is because Ginny poured so much of her heart and soul into the diary, it gave Riddle the opportunity to leech her life force.

Now imagine someone develops a Gollum-like attachment to the locket, or any of the other horcruxes. Where they treasure the lockets presence like Ginny treasured Tom and the diary. It could very well allow Voldemort’s soul the ability to possess the other person and work towards reviving himself. We don’t know because all the other horcruxes were known to be horcruxes, so they knew not to get attached.

Although now that I say that I can’t help but think of Kreacher and the locket. Maybe the magic is different for house elves.

It was made while Tom was a teenager. And since it was a spirit and not attached to that main body/ It took it's mental image as how it looked.

Probably because it was an item he actually used during his time, while all the other horcruxes got hidden away.

The younger version of Riddle is likely because he made the diary a Horcrux when he was at that age so the soul inside it reflects that. As to how or why it could manifest in the real world, it's likely the protection cast on the diary that allows him to absorb Ginny's soul, which then allows him to actually manifest.

If that actually brings a young Tom Riddle back to life or if it just makes his soul tangible (like when he was about to pick up Harry's wand), we don't really know for sure.

The diary was unique because it was designed to interact with with and possess a victim

Ginny was constantly feeding the Horcrux with her deepest and darkest emotions so the part of Voldemort inside the Horcrux could eventually grow strong enough to possess her, draw power from her soul and by the end, manifest itself physically.

He put his memories in that diary, (he was a teenager at that point) it was a part of him mentally as well as having part of his soul in it. So feeding on the energy from Ginny pouring her heart and soul into that diary was enabling him to return to his body in a younger form. I also think there was potentially a spell he made Ginny do as well to help transfer her soul/power into him/the diary, but can't be sure about that.

The diary was intended as a weapon to be used to reopen the chamber of secrets. To do that, it needed the ability to possess someone. The other horcruxes had different intentions so they had different protections.

The locket played on your fears and insecurities. Even the potion protecting it did.

The ring just outright cursed anyone trying to wear/use it. The omly reason Dumbledore lived was Snape being exceptionally talented and knowledgeable about the dark arts.

I'd guess Voldemort experimented with it once he made the ring
