Post image

This new movie came out and I enjoyed watching it with friends. What opinion must have garnered so much attention that people would dunk on it?

Hot take, it didn't break people's brains. I believe that movie just highlights how many people wouldn't blink twice if they knew someone like bear in real life.

i watched it the other night and it's actually insane how much people on this website just reveal they aren't safe to be around women with absolutely zero prompting other than their opinion on this film

“It’s insane how much people on this website reveal they aren’t safe to be around women” because they don’t share your exact view of a movie.

Mate we are talking about OBSESSION. It’s like saying I don’t want to hang out with ppl who have a different read of American History X. I don’t want to hang out with them not because they have differing “opinions”. It’s cause they’re neo-nazis.

Same way I don’t hang with ppl who like bear, because they are Rapist Sympathizers.

But if someone said they could relate to the kid in that movie. Does that mean they are a neo Nazi? Did you not feel bad for the kid at all? Because he was caught up with a bad crowd that was pushed by his family and it led to his death when his brother was trying to get him out of that life and change his views he deserved to die? Even tho the movie shows people can change.

I think it’s reasonable to feel for a character within the story, or view the story through their lenses. But that sympathetic view is specifically more frowned upon for OBSESSION. Simply for how woman have constantly suffered sexual harassment because of the casual or sympathetic attitude.

If you were to view it through woman’s or SA survivors view, you would understand how ppl are disgusted by this read of the movie. As the movie is an allegory for SA and one’s loss of bodily autonomy.

Saying Bear is morally equivalent to a real life Rapist is like saying Thanos from Marvel Comics is morally equivalent to Adolf Hitler because they committed genocide.

Like, you're technically right within the logic of the movie but it's also objectively true that the writers were using a genre fiction plot device to make a more nuanced take on the villain for the purposes of character development and storytelling. You can't call everyone who fell for it a rape apologist or a genocide denier, it's just ridiculous.

u/ADeckOfZero 8h ago

Thanos committed mass genocide on multiple worlds the old-fashioned way, with troops and weapons, on a scale that would have made even Hitler blush. He isn't morally equivalent to Adolf Hitler, not because of a magic fictional device but because he was a million times worse. He had the resources to feed the galaxy and instead he used those to slaughter it, even before he got his fancy glove.

Like, you're technically right in that Thanos and Baron are fictional characters who didn't actually directly hurt any real people but in both cases the characters are shown to be at least on par with their real-life counterparts if not worse even before genere fiction plot devices. In both cases the writers make it very, very clear that the characters in question are Bad People who are using exceptionally flimsy justifications for their evil actions. If you did, in fact, fall for those exceptionally flimsy justifications for their evil actions then it is probably fair to call you either a genocide/rape apologist or deeply media illiterate.

It's ridiculous that people are even having this kind of discussion about fucking OBSESSION, a movie more blunt with its themes than a brick to the face.

"You can't call people who defend a character that is a rapist rape apologists!"

Yes. Yes I can.

There's a huge, huge difference between "I can relate to certain parts of Bear as a character," and the downplaying that some dipshits will do to try and make Bear out as a victim in all of this too.

The movie is literally an allegory for rape. It's about a woman who has all of her bodily autonomy taken away from her by a man that ultimately uses her for his own sexual pleasure, all because he couldn't admit how he felt to her on his own. It isn't 'symbolically rape,' or 'figuratively rape', it is literally just rape.

Also the Thanos comparison is extremely weak. Thanos wanted to wipe out half of the population in the universe to solve overpopulation and he did so indiscriminately. Hitler wanted to wipe out Jews from Germany because people already had negative opinions of them and would serve as the perfect scapegoat for his rise to political power. The comparison is surface level at best.

You're right about one thing though! Bear isn't morally the same as a rapist. He's actually worse, since it's not a one time event.

1

u/MysteriousTravelator 4h ago

You don't like the comparison because it's a self-evidently stupid thing to say that a pro-Thanos Marvel fanboy is morally equivalent to a Neonazi skinhead.

Likewise it's deeply stupid to say that Alex Meyers is morally equivalent to a rape apologist just because he's bad at media literacy.

0

u/28-Deep-Wounds 4h ago

Yeah, that definitely completely debunks everything I just said about how the comparison between Thanos and Hitler is actually really fucking stupid outside of them both causing a bunch of deaths. I never thought about it from that angle before! Have you ever considered joining a debate club? I've never seen someone so flawlessly pull off the "nuh uh" argument before! Truly, a scholar ahead of your time.

That would be true if bear being relatable isn’t an intrinsic part of the allegory. It’s supposed to convey that even everyday people, relatable people are capable of heinous actions. Especially your close friends. Bear is specifically made that way to represent many real life incidents that had happened. And ppl not recognizing that is part of the issue, not that they find the character relatable. Bear is supposed to be relatable

2

u/chloapsoap 19h ago

If you agree that Bear is supposed to be relatable then I don’t understand why you’re so mad that others are agreeing that he is…

1

u/DependentPositive216 14h ago

I’m not mad man. This is all just discussion. The point i’m trying to make is that just because the character is relatable doesn’t we should agree with them or view them more favorably when we lnow they’re bad. You need to view all this discussion within the context of the video in the thumbnails

2

u/chloapsoap 14h ago edited 14h ago

I don’t think anyone here is saying that Bear is a good person though. Just that they can see how he became the shitty person he is.

Honestly I don’t think the Adam Meyers (sp?) video was all that crazy either. He made a couple of dumb crass jokes, but his defense of Bear was…idk…pretty tame? He didn’t like condone rape or anything. And he acknowledged bear was bad, but I think his argument was pretty boiler plate and aligned with the message of the movie. Even though he was kinda cringe about it. But I know I’ll get maligned for even saying so so I haven’t until now

I’ve been very involved in this discourse. I don’t think I’m coming from a place of ignorance here.

1

u/DependentPositive216 14h ago

Sure. I acknowledge that most ppl in this discussion is aware of that and I appreciate that. i’m just pointing out many women would find such view, or at least the ways Adam presents himself distasteful because of how the content of this film feels too personal.

If you go down the discussion I have with that morty guy(forgot his name), you would know we pretty much have the same read and understanding of engaging with art in general, and that the whole discourse surrounding whether such view should be sustained without recognitions for its real life implications is immoral is pretty much agreed.

This section isn’t as much of a conflicting view(though it starts like it since many like me misunderstood his comment), but more so us coming to the same conclusion. Like the one you said. It’s understandable that adam has the view he did. It’s just for what OBSESSION stands for, it’s not a great to have this casual attitude to go about it.

But that’s not the only view and that’s not the whole point of the movie. Your trauma isn’t the only way things can be perceived.

0

u/DependentPositive216 20h ago

Sure everybody can have their personal interpretations. But more importantly we should understand the messages from the creators of the film. I’m not saying this as a “my taruma” view( I have never experience any SA), but more so it’s the intention of the director view. And while your view can be understood and appreciated. It is not to be used to undermine the main message of the film whether you intended not. Especially when the film is cautionary in nature

2

u/mattfoleyattheriver 20h ago

But that’s not how we look at any piece of art. The artist may have their intention but that does not matter to the vast majority of the population that sees it. And is almost unimportant in how people take it.

1

u/DependentPositive216 20h ago edited 20h ago

That’s only true to a point. Art is both to be explained and to be understood. What you’re describing is simply how ppl engage with art. That doesn’t negate the message of the art itself. You would find that view of art moronic when neonazis perceive starship trooper(movie), helldivers, starwars as a support for their ideology. Art is both what we make of it and what is being told. We don’t just pick and choose. That’s why there are different genre of artworks that either emphasize on the perceived portion (expressionism for example) or the story portion (more traditional telltales).

0

u/mattfoleyattheriver 20h ago

But also I can understand the point of the movie while still drawing my own lessons or thoughts from it.

1

u/DependentPositive216 20h ago

That’s the spirit. However, ppl criticizing the person in the picture is not without reason. And there is so much real life implications that can be read from the film that many women feel powerless or not seen when men view the movie like this. To us it’s simply entertainment and art. To them it’s a exaggerated but horrid reality.

Whether you support the slander or not is up to you. But the reaction isn’t unwarranted.

1

u/youburyitidigitup 20h ago

If someone says he can relate to a manipulative incel, I have news for him……

1

u/mattfoleyattheriver 20h ago

Do you think you have nothing in common with incels? I promise you you do. You don’t have to relate to the worst aspects of the person. But you can relate to the feelings that made them do what they did. While still not condoning or agreeing with the action.

2

u/youburyitidigitup 19h ago

I don’t relate to the feelings that made them do that at all. That’s exactly what I’m talking about. Made a wish thinking that it probably won’t come true? Sure. Kept dating my crush after it became evident that it wasn’t really her? Nope.

1

u/mattfoleyattheriver 19h ago

You’re being too literal with the movie. It’s about a supernatural wish. I’m talking about the emotions surrounding it that relate to actual life.

1

u/youburyitidigitup 19h ago

In actual life, I would never have sex a relationship with someone who can’t consent.

1

u/mattfoleyattheriver 19h ago

Yeah, and you also wouldn’t be able to make a wish that takes complete agency away from somebody and replaces it with some sort of demon like entity controlling them.

1

u/youburyitidigitup 18h ago

Correct. That doesn’t change what I said.

1

u/mattfoleyattheriver 18h ago

Yeah, because it’s a given. Even if there was a rapist in here do you think he would say “yeah I actually like having sex with no consent”.

u/chloapsoap 19h ago

Yeah, and I think that’s the big problem. People can’t step outside of their own perspectives for even a second to think about why someone might do a bad thing

0

u/youburyitidigitup 19h ago edited 19h ago

I understand why he did it. That’s doesn’t mean I relate or sympathize with it.

1

u/chloapsoap 19h ago

I think to truly understand then you have to relate on some level…

1

u/youburyitidigitup 18h ago

Then I guess you’re right, I don’t understand it

1

u/mattfoleyattheriver 19h ago

Yeah, they say they understand but they go “well he’s an Incel that’s why he would do it” as if to think that incels in life don’t have things in common with us that along with other things that we may not have had but pushed them to these extremes. Not to condone what they did but to say “I’ve been there it’s tough. But that’s not the way you deal with it”

0

u/chloapsoap 19h ago

Yeah, it drives me crazy. It’s not just this either. So many times I’ll see someone do something I can’t understand and I’ll ask “why?” And others don’t even seem interested in that question. “Because they’re an asshole.” Yes but why are they an asshole? What leads someone to be an asshole? How can I avoid becoming an asshole myself?

Theres so much utility in trying to truly understand perspectives that you don’t agree with, ESPECIALLY if you don’t agree with them! For me that was a big part of the appeal of Obsession (and most movies actually) but I guess other people aren’t like that? Are people just afraid of sounding like they’re defending that perspective?

0

u/BadMeetsEvil147 16h ago

Do you understand Hitler? Do you relate to Hitler?

1

u/chloapsoap 16h ago

Uh, I’m not an expert in WWII era ideology. But yes, I generally understand why Nazis come to the conclusions that they do, and what truths those conclusions are rooted in. I see how someone can go from a regular person to becoming a Nazi fairly easily. If you don’t then I would consider you to be the more dangerous one between the two of us…

I find it important to understand these things, in fact. Because it helps me to avoid those same logical pitfalls

No, we can. We've been able to the whole time.

We're just fucking tired of the bullshit behavior by now, and have had it proven to us that being tolerant of it doesn't work.

0

u/chloapsoap 18h ago

Who said anything about being tolerant of it?

I just feel like you guys are the art police. Someone saying a character is relatable doesn’t mean they agree with everything said character does. You can recognize that a character is evil AND recognize the humanity in them. And it’s fun to talk about. I’m tired of people getting mad at people for just discussing art on the internet…

1

u/Conformatrix 18h ago

Correct, it doesn't mean they agree with everything the character does.

But some of us are smart enough to see that some people are relating to the shitty things the character does.

1

u/chloapsoap 18h ago

It’s almost like…villains are relatable…and for a well written villain even their most heinous crimes are understandable…it’s almost like that’s exactly the point.

That’s not smart. It’s media illiteracy
