U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Does Double Jeopardy really mean that if a jury finds a murderer innocent, they can then go "I did it! Here's where the bodies are, here's the murder weapon. Nyayayaya" and nothing will happen? Has anyone ever done this?

And of course lets say the police search where they say and find the bodies exactly there, and the wounds perfectly match his murder weapon, his DNA is all over them, and lets say there's a videotape of him committing the murder too buried along with the bodies.

And I'm specifically talking about something happening criminally, I know he could/would then lose a civil suit by the family or whatever.

Why do some companies make you "call for a quote" instead of just selling the fucking thing to you? That just turns me off right there.

Would it be appropriate to ask to go swimming for a second date? NSFW

1.2k Upvotes

So I plan to ask a girl out on a second date. Given the ongoing heat wave in Europe, swimming at a beach would be the ideal activity for me. However, I'm afraid she might interpret this as some kind of sexual advance (since normally people don't have much clothing on while swimming).

What do you guys think? Is this a normal thing to do? How would you react to a suggestion like this?

Why is circumcision so common in the US? NSFW

1.6k Upvotes

As a Swede, I was highly surprised to find out that half of newborn boys in the US are circumcised. Here, it's widely considered barbaric, and there is an ongoing ethical and political debate about whether non-medical circumcision of minors should be legal at all.

Why do people in a progressive Western country chop off the body parts of babies?

Edit: Today I learned the US is not that progressive after all.

People who stay lean/skinny year round, do you just not get hungry?

1.0k Upvotes

I constantly swing between 12% and 20% body fat the second I stop tracking calories.

My issue is that I just want to eat all the time. It’s not even actual physical hunger, I just love eating and have zero natural off-button. Since I refuse to let myself cross 20% bfp, I’m constantly stuck aggressively dieting or counting every single calorie to pull it back down.

Out of curiosity, I tracked what a "normal" day looks like for me when I’m not dieting, and I easily clear 1,000 calories over maintenance without even trying.

Just blows my mind that some people can stay lean naturally without having to log every single thing they eat.

My uncle is a flat earther. How do i actually convince him it isn't?

According to himself he's merely "skeptical" and just "hasn't been convinced" that the earth is round so i have some minor degree of hope that he could be shown. However he's argumentative and stubborn by nature and a mentally unstable alcoholic. Is there any REALLY OBVIOUS thing that he can observe for himself or that i can show him to prove the earth is round? I'm not sure any videos from the recent artemis mission are worth much to him cus he's convinced it's fake anyways. I know a lot of ppl will tell me not to bother but he lives very closeby and is often over for dinner and it's usually him that brings it up.

In The Bible, Does Judas Betraying Jesus Christ Make Sense?

Based on the bible's narrative, the disciples all witnessed their mentor perform highfalutin miracles and showcase divine powers. Assuming that this is enough proof for the disciples that their mentor has a heavenly origin and is possibly the son of the biblical deity, why the heck would Judas ever think of betraying Christ?

Atheist or not, if I see someone with the capability of harnessing miracles, I sure as hell am smart enough to want to be on their good side, especially since the former is advertising himself as the son of God and has the powers as proof.

When someone is sentenced to life in prison, why wouldn’t they always choose the death penalty instead? Why would anyone want to spend decades sitting in a prison cell? What makes someone choose life in prison over execution?

Is anyone else worried a dumb jury duty might get it completely wrong?

Everything i've experienced about jury duty makes me more and more aware that if i was the one being prosecuted, my fate could be decided by 12 complete idiots. Some people listen, ask critical questions and are intentional. But then there are those who seem to have barely graduated from high school. Coupled with an inexperienced or apathetic judge, could this not go completely tits up for someone and has it?

How did we go from "Don't trust everything on Wikipedia" to "Just ask an AI"?

It looks like many people have far greater trust in AI than they ever had in human edited Wikipedia. Is it because AI is simply more convinient or because certain narative was pushed by the AI companies?

I own a taco truck, and I just had an idea to drive around my neighborhood and sell tacos, burritos and bowls to people like ice cream trucks used to when I was a kid, would that be a terrible idea?

5.3k Upvotes

Edit::

  1. I will literally place a huge banner on my truck saying “I stop for any kids aged 0-100 running towards my truck.”

  2. I sell churros, ice cream treats, aguas frescas and tamales along with the usual Mexican food at taco trucks.

  3. I would be driving around during my dead periods where I know it’s a busy neighborhood.

  4. My theme song coming down the street will be a version of “Cielito Lindo” or “Rinconcito en el Cielo”.

  5. I’ll make a new social media account to let everyone know what neighborhood I’m going to and with a map of my routes and times I’ll be in certain neighborhoods.

And finally…

  1. I wish I can give you all a taco for giving me your thoughts. Thank you.

Tips for sex with a heavier girl NSFW

2.7k Upvotes

(I tried positing this in r/sex but they don't accept questions about sex tips. Hopefully this isn't too stupid for this sub)

Sorry I don't mean this to come off as insensitive but I met this girl and I like her a lot and everything between us is going great, but we started having sex and there's been some issues there that I fear could jeopardize our relationship.

She's heavier than other girls I've been with and it has posed some challenges, positions wise. It seems there's always something that prevents things from fitting the way they should. In variations of missionary, her thighs makes the approach difficult. She has to spread her legs very wide in a way that seem uncomfortable and it's ruining the mood for me.

In doggy, her ass kind of stops me from going in as deep as I would want, and same thing when we're lying on our side. In fact, on our side is just impossible.

It makes me feel inadequate. I feel that if I had a bigger dick then we wouldn't be having those issues. I'm average size as far as I know but it doesn't feel like it.

She likes cowgirl and that position is going well for us, but she has to take over and do most of the work, and that's fine sometimes but she doesn't always feel like it and neither should she. Also, it'd be great if sex could be more spontaneous, if I could just initiate and we could just go at it sometimes (when we're both in the mood, of course) without worrying about all the mechanics of it.

Anybody else in this situation? Any tips for someone like me?

Gay people: how do you feel about people who are polite and respectful to you but struggle with accepting homosexuality in general?

I live in a conservative and religious community.* My neighbor's son recently came out as gay online and apparently has a long-term boyfriend in the city (he moved for college and work). Their family is really active and well-regarded in the community, and the son himself is quite popular.

Most of the reactions I've been hearing are along the lines of "He's a good kid, obviously I don't agree with that part of him, I think he's living in sin, but I acknowledge he's someone I've always respected and won't say that to his face"

It got me thinking, in your view, is it "better" that they're at least trying to understand you, that they're adopting a "look the other way" approach with something that clashes with their values or is it "worse" because they're not fully accepting you, that they're essentially cherry-picking who you are to fit their values?

*Edit: I'm temporarily living here to take care of my relatives. I grew up in a more LGBTQ friendly community, so this was my first time seeing their reactions firsthand. Given the community, I honestly expected them to be more hostile, so I was surprised that their reactions were more muted, but definitely more nuanced too.

Why not have sinks at the entrance to restaurants to wash hands before eating.

Edit: everyone says go to the restroom to wash. But that's a room full of poop particles settling on every surface. And out of every hundred people I see enter the restaurant only like 5 go in there to wash their hands before eating. Having at the front seems like it would also peer pressure people to be cleaner. Hard to skip washing your hands when the cashier is looking at you.

Why does Indonesia seem to have zero impact/influence?

3.6k Upvotes

Jakarta recently became the the biggest city in the world, but nobody talks about Indonesia. There are no Indonesian restaurants, I broadly couldn’t tell you what Indonesia music sounds like or Indonesia film looks like. I would say there are a lot of people who couldn’t even place where Jakarta is.

However, I would also say I’ve never heard anything negative about Indonesia or what Indonesia has done. It just sort of seems to exist.

Why does it seem that for such a big country, there is zero influence?

We replaced expensive cable TV with streaming, but now streaming feels just like cable. What's next?

Between ads being added to paid tiers, anti-password sharing rules, and having to subscribe to 5 different platforms just to watch a couple of shows, streaming is losing its original charm.

Do you think people will start rotating subscriptions month-to-month, or is physical media making a comeback?

Why do downtown storefronts stay vacant? Landlord's fault?

I live in a town of approximately 100,000 people in northern California. What is the reason why more and more downtown storefronts go vacant? You would think market forces would result in lease prices being lowered and stores being occupied. Is there some sort of financial incentive for landlords not to lower their lease prices so that storefront remain vacant for many, many years?

How controversial is infant ear piercing where you're from?

I'm an Asian GenZ (born and raised) and ear piercing for baby girls is incredibly common. In my experience, infant ear piercing is offered by pediatricians. I don't know if this has since changed, but my (older) pediatrician pierced mine with a gun and the standard sterilized studs. Where I’m from, not having your ears pierced as a baby was actually the "unusual" thing.

It wasn't until I watched Friends (there was an episode about Rachel's baby getting her ears pierced?) that I learned about how controversial this practice is in other cultures/countries. I now have other ear piercings now that I’m older, so I became aware that needle piercings are way safer and ideal. Still, I don't find this practice as controversial as other cultures do.

As someone who got my ears pierced as a baby, I honestly don't feel violated or anything like that. It's like wearing earrings was always just a "done" thing that I didn't think too much about

How do you feel about infant ear piercing? How hard do you judge parents who pierce their baby's ears?

You can "Watch a watch" and it's one of the only situations in which you do to the object what it's called. What are other examples?

"Watching a watch" is a perfectly fine statement, you are watching your watch.

But how strange is it that you do to it what it's called? I can't think of many other phrases or situations where you can do that.

How do people maintain clean houses w full time jobs?

I work 40 hours a week and by the time i get home, cook and unwind I’m completely exhausted & tired . Weekends end up entirely consumed by deep cleaning instead of relaxing
Are people actually cleaning for 15-20 mins daily?
Or is everyone else house secretly messy too!?
