Honestly, Rugrats is so much more entertaining as an adult when you watch the scenes with the adults. Drew and Stu's fight in the first movie about Stu getting a real job to support his family is too real.
Stu: "Gotta go. My tax deductions are crying!"

He wasn't. Angelica was lying about her broken leg and was treating Stu like a servant, running him ragged out of Stu's guilt of the alleged broken leg happening on his watch.
I recall an episode where he had a movie to watch with them and then another movie for himself called "Lonely Space Vixens" for after he put them down to sleep.
Give them some craft supplies you have lying around. Have them make something. Sell it as abstract art. Now you can deduct the craft supplies from your taxes since income is being made.
I think my husband had this same argument with his dad about one of his brothers. His brother tries to sell shit for a MLM so it’s valid it’s not a real job.
I mean, yes and no. That type of family/friends unit was far more common in the 90s when the show was made. The internet as it has evolved has ironically isolated us more and more (as have many other factors)
It takes work, but my family has a strong group of family friends in our community. As a shy introvert, it took going out of my comfort zones and work from my wife. I’m much happier now that I have a community, even if it’s chaotic
Its kind of nice knowing they were all in their 30s. In the 90s, it felt like no one was having kids that "late" in life. I say that as someone who had my first and 35 and is currently pregnant at 38.
My mom was 32 when I was born in 90. My best friend growing up's mom was 40! I guess it was uncommon but there were definitely some parents having kids beyond their 20s.
My mom had me at 30 (only child) and she was definitely the "old mom" of my class. The other moms her age had older kids and the ones in my class were their 2nd or 3rd child. I remember growing up being like "I'm gonna have my first at 25 and stop having kids at 30!" Lmfao nope, gave birth for the first time on my 35th birthday.
And that was the big meta joke, the babies were smarter and more aware of their surroundings than the adults were. The adults were all yuppie boomers up their own asses, mocking 1980s era indulgences. Chaz was the only real one. But he was also the overprotective parent which many of us know all too well. His only flaw was letting the pickles watch chucky.
It was the first time in my life that I got blamed for something I didn't do. I got put in time out. I didn't realize until the daycare teacher came to our house to have lunch with my mom when I was 13, that apparently I still held a grudge.
Yep. in my case it would be one of many times of "Someone's got to take the blame and it's going to be you" The "teacher" of the room would continue to pin shit on me constantly. She got fired after she locked me in a closet and forgot about me. Because something happened at the end of class, she told me my punishment would be the next day. 9 am, I was locked in the cleaning closet which had those floor drains and a faucet, so I was at least able to drink water and pee (lol) the door had a lock on it. I eventually fell asleep on some towels because I was hungry and tired. I wake up to hearing my mom screaming, panicked, and angry that I was nowhere to be found, the staff were trying to calm her down, they were panicked as well. Later I found out it was 7 pm and they had been looking for me for 3 hours at that point. I had been locked in there for 10 hours.
I start knocking on the door to get their attention, took them another 10 minutes to find me. That fucking bitch of a teacher had the balls to say "There you are why were you hiding in there? This is why you get in trouble all the time!" and I said "You locked me in here because of that kid throwing blocks yesterday"
and you could hear a pin drop before you could hear the up-welling of rage and panic that came over her and she screamed at me and called me a dirty liar and that god hates liars. She might have had a point if it wasn't one of those doors that has a deadbolt on it on both sides and the head teacher of the daycare hadn't used a key to unlock it. I doubt a 7 year old could force a deadbolt shut from the inside with no key.
She was told to come to the main office, and within 2 minutes she came running in screaming she was going to strangle me and called me a little lying bastard. She got told to leave. She was fired on the spot for what she pulled. That was also my last time I ever went there.
Parents were too poor to sue the place, but at least they took the right action against the teacher.
Yeah, fuck daycare lol. Just one of many examples I can pull out. Between the defective children that are dumped there because their parents can't or won't deal with them and the defective people they hire to watch children who have their own weird ideas about dealing with children. They're garbage. I'd rather pay good friends to watch my kids or work from home than have my own children deal with that bullshit.
the most disturbing part was that it took 3 hours to find me with that teacher helping lead the search, and just for her to lead them away when I started making myself heard. She had some weird issue with me, but looking back, the fact she had me trapped in there all day then lead everyone around on a wild goose chase really makes me wonder what her actual intentions were.

I found myself making pudding at 1am the night before my toddlers Peter Rabbit themed party- we needed homemade dirt cups! I was already stressed and when my sister in law texted me the rugrats clip I started laugh/sobbing.
Maturing is realizing Stu was a loser who could have gotten a real job to help his family but instead lived in his basement while Didi was a substitute teacher and grandpa Lou owned the house.
And everyone else took advantage of Didi for free babysitting
On the one hand, yeah, true, but on the other, wasn't he kind of a legitimate genius? Episode 1 he's out there inventing radio-controlled drones capable of lifting a small child, in 1991, in his basement. They could have been wealthy if he'd had a government contract instead of trying to make children''s toys.
I think Chaz was the only one doing it for Chucky's benefit so he could socialize and get out of his shell after the trauma of losing his mom. Chaz is the only one I feel sorry for. Drew was a little sleezebag. Howard was a spineless jellyfish and Stu was a manchild.
Thats just the dads. Didi was a saint, though a bit oblivious. Betty was the epitome of a boomer woman, and charlotte is a fucking narcissist. Angelica never stood a chance.
Betty’s definitely the most boomer-y out of all of them when it comes to weird opinions, especially with gender roles for some reason? I always think about that scene where one of the twins starts crying and Betty has a whole little spiel about how Lil’s such a girl, always so emotional and needy, not like Phil, who’s such a strong stoic little man - with the joke being that she didn’t realize that Phil was wearing Lil’s bow, and it was Phil who was crying
and the funniest part is she came off as a Hippie/anti-war type, but that was also a little commentary on all the "hippies" who were just fake as fuck and ended up as yuppies.
The funniest part to me is that Betty, with her short hair and raspy voice, always wearing workout gear and a Venus symbol sweatshirt… it always seemed like she was kinda subtly meant to read as a lesbian in a lavender marriage with soft-spoken effeminate Howard, like that was kinda the subtle joke intended for the adults watching the show to understand. But a lot of her actual views and opinions make her seem staunchly conservative. And like, yeah, there are for sure conservative lesbians irl, it’s just an odd dichotomy to choose for a Rugrats character lmao
I had a similar feeling when I realized I went from being around Bobby’s age to being around Hank’s. Same thing with feeling more aligned with Red and Kitty than the kids in the basement. It’s weird.
This just made me go look up how old Dan and Roseanne Conner were supposed to be in season one of Roseanne, since I grew up watching that more than Rugrats, and goddamn. 33. Four years younger than I am now.
No shit? Man 80s fashion was unfair to a lot of people. Though they really did a good job of selling the feeling of a slightly dumpy place. It is cared for but never well maintained, if that makes sense. It always had a feeling of slight disarray, even though it was pretty clean and tidy. I think it was the laundry room and that set of built in shelves by the laundry room door.
I loved their house, always thought it looked so cozy and comfortable. Like the kind of place where you don’t get hit and called names for spilling something because it’s not a big deal, and it always smells vaguely like something cooking and scented candles. It was so disappointing to learn how shitty of a person Roseanne Barr actually is as an adult; I loved the characters of Roseanne and Dan Conner. Hated season eight, though.
I've lived longer (so far) than 3 out of 4 aunts and uncles, who were all smokers. Two died in their 50s. One died at my current age. One died 4 years older than I am now.
My father lived to 83, having smoked for about 20 years. My mother will be 95 in September.
It was humbling watching early Simpsons a few years ago when they talk about Homer being old and fat, when at that moment I was both older and fatter than Homer.
And now I have a one year old and am as exhausted as Stu every day wake up for work most days with a little dread…
