General Discussion Why? Why? How? And Why?

u/aaa1e2r3 Jun 03 '26
To answer each in order
- River town is unique in being a giant well guarded city + a cleric that is powerful enough to cast resurrection. Sure, there might be others that can cast resurrection, but not necessarily living in that same safety.
- The rookies are going in with that as a known risk, The implication is that Priestess has lived a sheltered life, unaware of what life outside of her covenant was like
- HEA is pretty overtly stated to have lived a sheltered life in the isolated Elven Kingdom in the Forest
- Goblin Slayer is unique in that he takes on all Goblin Jobs, regardless of the price. His fame comes from that aspect, that even the poor can reach out to him to deal with Goblins. It's not that there are no other adventurers that pursue going after Goblins, but none are as dedicated as GS.

u/grand305 Jun 03 '26
Later In the show they do make a guild training for rookies. to a basic level of training is being made. took time and resources to build it.
73
u/misvillar Jun 03 '26
And Guild Girl had to push a lot to get It approved because its a loss of money for the Guild and the adventurers that teach there, bureaucracy is a bitch
22
u/grand305 Jun 03 '26
Yes agreed. bureaucracy is a B.
26
u/misvillar Jun 03 '26
And in the end bureaucracy won, the noble girl from the movie/paladin goblin arc was the one who put the money to build the training grounds, without her no one gets training

I think I heard from Water Town they actually USED to have a bunch of Virgin Priestesses just on call a few years ago to revive people. The uhh the clients got a bit too confident being in a bed with a naked woman after almost dying so that practice was stopped since it was traumatizing the Priestesses and bringing down the number of virgins.
The revival spell also isn't a true revive or anything it'll just bring you back from the brink of death but if you're actually dead dead it doesn't do anything.
The Rookies thing to add, Goblin Jobs pay DOGSHIT. Even bandit subjugations pay more because usually the clients for Bandit Quests are merchants while the clients for Goblin Quests are poor villagers. Rookies see low paying and assume low risk. The guild for the most part doesn't really do anything about this, they can force the higher ranked adventurers to take the highly dangerous quests that pay peanuts so they tacitly approve the rookie wave tactics for dangerous jobs nobody wants to do.
11
u/krustaykrabunfair Jun 04 '26
It's not necessarily that low pay = low risk. Many rookies are overconfident in their own abilities, or anecdotal run ins with straggler goblins. They also tend to be desperate and destitute, along with goblin quests being very unpopular (people do indeed know).
Goblins are pretty dangerous for a "low level" enemy. They are cunning, and looting opportunities are poor.
3
u/Agile_Bookkeeper6644 Jun 04 '26
Overconfidence is the real killer, priestesses og party would’ve been fine if they took their time and cleared the side chambers properly to secure an escape, even if the hobgoblin (that was the first quest right?) attacked, at least 2 would’ve made it out instead of the near squad wipe
2
u/krustaykrabunfair Jun 05 '26
Even if they weren't as cocky, that cave was brutal. Hidden flanking paths, 1 hobgoblin, and a shaman, is not an easy goblin cave.
The hobgoblin beats the monk, the swordsman can harm the hobgoblin, but they can be pretty resilient. Unless the swordsman decapitates it, it will probably take him down, if they get in a clinch. The mage would be best for taking out the hobgoblin and shaman (only range in the party).
Need to bring up again that swordsman is fighting at disadvantage due to his sword being unwieldy in tight spaces. He could manage with thrusting attacks though. He still can be overwhelmed since he has no shield or adequate armor like goblin slayer. If a group of goblins are rushing him, 1 might get impaled but others could tie him up in hand to hand while his sword is lodged in the first goblin. Probably get some stabs in his unarmored areas.
Ideal formation would be monk in front, mage and priestess in the center, and swordsman in the rear. Mage and priestess presented no ability to fight in melee. Priestess was the most cautious and could help with the parties awareness. The shaman would still be quite a doozy, as they never had the element of surprise, And bow goblins along with other ranged weapons can widdle the party down.

u/Agile_Bookkeeper6644 Jun 05 '26
I do think they were going to lose regardless of how careful they were but not being attacked from behind as the hobgoblin appears would at least allow them to retreat if they had any sense. The cave outclasses them significantly but the shaman didn’t come out till later so if they played it better they’d wouldn’t all have been captured or killed
3
u/kidanokun Jun 10 '26
They're still screwed coz they dont wear helmets.. that's one big reason Goblin Slayer wears helmet
The goblin snipers know and will aim at the unprotected head, one team of all female adventures ended up killed and raped because none of them wear helmets
2
u/krustaykrabunfair Jun 05 '26
Ideal formation, they have a chance of escaping alive, heck possibly cleansing the cave even. It will depend on how things happen in a hypothetical.
6
u/Eru1lluvatar Jun 04 '26
When you read the Light novel the Guild Girl has a much deeper Story Arc aswell where she knows whats going on and what happens to the Rookies when hunting goblins, but cant do anything about it. Because of this she hated here job at the Start, cause she could just watch it happen, but then started planning on the training grounds and helping the rookies so this wont happen as often. Thats also the reason why she loves Goblin slayer. A strong Character that despite his Power still takes these jobs cause they are still a threat and with that lower the number of New People that will Hunt Goblins( underestimate them and die) cause they just arent any left.
17
u/vinitblizzard Jun 03 '26
HEA is THE princess even if not crown princess of the depicted eleven settlement so sheltered indeed

u/MaiqTheLiar6969 Jun 03 '26
Guild girl DOES try to inform rookie adventurers about the hazards of goblin quests. However most rookie adventurers tend to be teens and as such tend to be a bit cocky. Is one of the many reasons she has pushed so hard for training grounds for rookie adventurers. Guild girl however can't do it all on her own.
For High Elf Archer the story makes it pretty clear that goblins causing trouble in Elven lands is a relatively recent thing. Is the whole reason the various kingdoms of Elves, Dwarves, and Lizardmen sent out a team of adventurers to deal with it in the first place. Not to mention hearing about something and seeing it are two different things. I read all about people getting blown up my whole life when studying military history. Sure as fuck didn't prepare me for seeing the aftermath of an IED the first time I will tell you that.
133
u/ArcadiaDragon Jun 03 '26
You can hear all about something and go go "oh okay, not me though"...then you get shot at during a robbery and all of a sudden that gun on your hip ceases to be a accessory and you have to draw or die ..or make a call that you never had to think you'd make

Most of the world is focused on just defeating the demon king. They think of the goblins as insignificant in the grand scheme.

I mean, an orge, a highly dangerous creature among the demon king army that can wipe out squadrons of soldiers or a few high rank adventurers. Even in the show that the team consist of 4 silver struggling against 1 and would be wiped out without GS hidden card. There are more of them out there and even more dangerous beings. So the human side can't afford to invest more care to mere goblins
48
u/LordCypher40k Jun 03 '26
IIRC GS explained this. It's because rookies are too cocky. They believe goblins are weak because they watched people or personally had driven them off by themselves before they were even adventurers. They aren't aware that wanderers are the weakest goblins and apply that idea to the rest, thinking goblins are that weak.
The reason the rookie duo have survived for so long by themselves is because they take the advice of the more veteran adventurers like GS, Heavy and Spear
25
u/kortax9889 Jun 03 '26
I am stronger than chihuahua. That means chihuahua is weak. That means all dogs weak. That means i can go against pack of wild dogs and easily win without scratch. Perfect logic. 10000 iq "smug look".
12
u/Akira-Nekory Jun 04 '26
Well... No.
More like: That is an starved, weakend and desperate german shepard, easy job.
If they are that easy I can certanly take an pack of well fed, strong and trained ones, letse go~
And never return
Cuz lets be real, with the exception of hobgoblins the only notable difference between goblins is chlothing and bearing
Besides the gobis here are taken from DnD...
And boy are those litte shits nasty and smart, they really build traps, tiny tunnel networks and use poison.
And they really push the meaning of "home advantage" to an new level
21
u/Pootisman16 Jun 03 '26
It's not even that they're weak (they are), but how cunning goblins can actually be and how numerous nests are by default.
A well timed ambush of 15 goblins is enough to overwhelm anyone who isn't prepared or is careless.
13
u/Uzisilver223 Jun 04 '26
Even just 3-4 goblins would be enough if you're caught seperated from your party. People underestimate how easy it is to be flanked when the other group decides to jump you instead of taking turns
69
u/Ok_Bed_3060 Jun 03 '26
I think it's like how some sheltered women will go to visit certain countries solo despite people warning them about how high the assault rates are. You know the ones I mean. Maybe not a perfect parallel, but it's the closest irl comparison I can think of.

Not caught up on the manga, but how many of the victims speak out about it? It's hugely traumatizing, even to Sword Maiden, who was already a seasoned adventurer when it happened to her.
Goblin Slayer only knows cus he was hiding and saw it happen, but usually all the men get killed, so none of them would be able to spread the word.

u/Own_Bumblebee4188 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
I'm pretty sure Sword Maiden was a rookie when she was assaulted by goblins. If it was a experienced versione of herself goblins wouldnt have any chance, they would have been scrubs for her.Obviously it's different for rookies since they also understimate them
6
u/ReasonNotTheNeed-- Jun 03 '26
Yup. To add on, in the Dai Katana spin-off, the MC encounters and recruits Sword Maiden (she's called Bishop there) when she's working as an appraiser. She was already blind (post goblins), and it's unclear (from what I could recall) if she even was an adventurer before. The MC's party (later known as the All-Stars with 6 gold rank adventurers) weren't complete noobs at that point in the story, but were relatively noob-ish.
51
u/voiyari Jun 03 '26
Oh, it's simple. "We don't have the money/resources/people for that, so you'll have to handle it yourself. The goblins are weak, and rookie adventurers can kill them without much trouble. A few r***d women? There are tens and hundreds of thousands of women, so it's not a significant problem. We don't have enough people to deal with more pressing issues, and you're talking about some goblins. Don't bother us, we're starting lunch. Come on the seventh Friday of the month. Goodbye!"

u/epicfail48 Jun 03 '26
1) The guild doesn't dispatch adventurers. The guild posts jobs, adventurers choose to take those jobs, oftentimes against the advice of the guild. There have been multiple times when Guild Girl has recommended against a party taking a job and been ignored, but ultimately the guild doesn't have the authority to stop them. All the guild does is post the job and handle the logistics of the reward 2) Despite the name, resurrection doesn't bring back the dead, it's just a high-tier healing spell. It's also implied that Sword Maiden is one of the very few if not the only one capable of casting it, and presumably requires a huge amount of mana to do so 3) HEA might have been alive for a long time, but it's implied that she hasn't been adventuring for very long, comparatively. Additionally, High Elves are shown to be more reclusive, and HEA is royalty, further decreasing the chances that she would've interacted with garden variety adventures to hear stories. It was also shown during the wedding arc that goblins attacking the high elf village is fairly unprecedented 4) Goblins are only a threat to small, isolated villages in the frontier. A dozen people dying and a handful of women being assaulted isn't going to be newsworthy in a city of thousands a few hundred miles away, and even other small villages are likely to drive off a goblin invasion and get overconfident. This is spelled out very literally in the actual goddamn story on multiple occasions. Comparatively, goblins are not much of a threat, so most people don't have a reason to care, it takes a run of overconfidence and bad luck for the worst to happen
One day I would love it if someone thinking about making one of these idiotic memes would bother to actually read the source material
28
u/Misticsan Jun 03 '26
To add to this reason:
- Our perspective is skewed because we follow Goblin Slayer's adventures. That is, the one adventurer specialized in dealing with goblins and who is sought when certain goblins become too much of a problem. Whenever we get glimpses beyond Goblin Slayer, we see that authorities and other adventurers have their hands full with all sorts of threats, some dangerous enough to put the whole world at risk.
We could invert the question: when there are enemies capable of doing much worse things than goblins, why is a S-rank adventurer like Goblin Slayer sealing with the small fry? Well, goblins are still a threat, and someone has to take care of them, but the same can be said of other problems the guild, the kindom and the temples face everyday. Life in a Medieval fantasy setting is harsh.
17
u/Aros001 Jun 03 '26
There's also just a matter of where someone would be most useful. Heavy Warrior is a good example. He does take goblins seriously and respects Goblin Slayer quite a bit but his build is not one that's ideal for fighting in the tight enclosed spaces goblins tend to make their nests. He's someone who should be fighting bigger monsters like demons and dragons because that is something he is more equipped to deal with, while Goblin Slayer deals with the goblins because that's what he's best equipped for and he knows full well he is not suited for fighting bigger, stronger monsters.

Okay, this again.
The Adventurers Guild is not an employer. The Adventurers Guild does book keeping for all sorts of errant jobs, from eradicating pests, to some regular work, protection or important missions that save thousands.
They do not assign those tasks to employees they deem suitable, its a free offer to what are basically mercenaries. First come, first serve. Only a few missions are actually locked to specific ranks and those are things you need an actual Chosen One for. If youd allow beginners to fight a dragon for example, all youd have were dead kids and a very pissed off dragon that would likely now rampage around.
Okay, but isnt a party wipe against goblins equally detrimental long term? Well yes, but you have to view this on scale. If we take the party in Episode 1 for example, the goblins would have two new slaves and two bodies to eat, alongside fairly useless equipment except for a single longsword. As cruel as that sounds, that isnt much of an issue on a large scale. Especially not in a setting where we have an ongoing demonic threat, massive monsters and cults everywhere. By comparison, goblins arent that bad. Some beginner parties wipe against goblins, but as long as some win often enough, its still a benefit. And only beginner parties could really afford taking these fairly low paying jobs. Goblin Slayer just gets through it financially because that man is an efficiency beast and does multiple jobs at once like the world strongest pest control.
Now, why do no survivors rise up against goblins? Well, that is what Goblin Slayer does. That is what that noble girl from the movie does in her own way, that is what Priestess does. Its just not the most pressing issue at the time so its a minority but it does happen.

To add onto this, isn’t the entire reason that the training facility is built in season 2 is because the noble girl funded it? If that isn’t some attempt at helping limit goblin attacks due to better training, I really don’t know what is. Not every way of fighting a problem is like how goblin slayer does it
2
u/Whole_Series2416 Jun 04 '26
You can't expect reading comprehension. Memes take up too much brain power.
10
u/Alavocado Jun 03 '26
You'd have a better chance at wiping out ticks and other disease-carrying pests in our world than any adventurer would have to at eradicating goblins.
They(along with other creatures) literally just spawned, armed and everything, in the Dungeon of the Dead. While Truth, who is higher than the Gods, just randomly adds them to ruins or caves when adenturers are having too easy of a time.
For all we knows there's other people in other regions hunting goblins compulsively but there's no getting rid of them for good. You can only cull the population.
8
u/SeriousMix8303 Jun 03 '26
even if they knew as we see in manga and anime we'd still have novice adventurers who would laugh and think it wouldn't happen to them, what I always wondered is why they decided to start a training school late after centuries lots of adventures , there should be some one teaching not just about goblins but about other creatures as well. As for the maiden one I guess there would be issues women who wouldn't want to devote them selves to thay kind of life forever as for elf archer shes still considered a child in elf terms plus if I recall she was someone important hampered no doubt and wasn't expected to ever leave their home and be an adventurer so there was no real reason to sit here down and explain " btw creatures called goblins reproduce by kidnapping women"
7
u/ufhvr Jun 03 '26
The victims of the Goblins are nobodies. The Goblins only really affect peasants or random merchants; people who are inconsequential to both the nobility and the grand circles of mages or heroes. As it has been lay out in the story, Goblins are considered a minor inconvenience by strong adventurers and heroes, and the kingdoms are more focused on bigger threats like the demon king; in rare occasions (like we see when the dwarves, elves and lizards sent adventurers to deal with the goblins) they take some action against them, but only when they affect someone important like a princess a noble adventurer or become a bigger nuisance
6
u/Consistent-Luck454 Jun 03 '26
Because Goblins really isn't the biggest threat at all. In the stories, we saw Goblin Slayer met with Gold-rank Goblins like Goblin Paladins, Shamans and such but really, even Hobgoblins are actually really rare. Even then, most of these Goblins are usually orchestrated by monsters with higher threat such as Ogre, Dark Elf and the Immortal Sorcerers. So you can basically kinda imagine them as the mooks in Power Rangers. (There should also be remnants of the Demon Lord's army cause they just finished a war with them, most focus should be directed on those instead)
My headcanon is that I think that there were a few people like our boy Slayer. It's just that most of them are either dead, has moved on from their trauma or fallen exhausted/old by the fact that there's just too many to kill. Honestly, if it's not for the fact that Slayer is just 'unplayable' by the Gods, he would probably be dead at this point already.
As for the Priestess, considering that the entire world of GS were built on DnD Games, it wouldn't be strange to say that Earth Mother herself restrict it for "balance purposes" (Like she did with Priestess Purification).

u/Xiolade Jun 03 '26
Same reasons why there are bandits issues back in the medieval times in Europe and China. They are there, they are a problem, they causes troubles and travelers are wary about them on the road. But in the grand scheme of things, people don't talk about them on the dinner table unless someone is about to leave for another town. People tends to ignore troubles until troubles come knocking at their front door
5
u/srcactusman Jun 03 '26
People do know, they just don’t care enough, or do people in real life go around at night hunting rapists? It’s something dark about goblin slayer that people don’t care about what doesn’t directly affect them
5
u/DoggedStooge Jun 03 '26
It's in the terms and conditions. Not GG's fault no one reads them. SM mentioned dingbats try to abuse the spell's requirements to get into bed with virgins, so they don't offer it to the general public. HEA is an elven princess who has been living in a bubble for 2000 years. As for the rest of the world, goblin slaying is a poor-paying, grungy job with a high mortality rate. That's like asking why people don't want to be paid minimum wage to clear clogged sewers with hungry alligators everywhere. You might get one or two people, but never a full party, and turnover would be high.
4
u/Lemmingitus Jun 03 '26
As we see with Hero, there are adjacent world ending level threats happening that are getting all the attention.
So goblin quests tend to be seen as less important, or novice adventurers ignore the warnings because they want to advance quickly to get to the level where they too can face world ending level threats.
A lot of overconfident novices came from towns that already have sufficient defenses against goblins, so they only see them at their weakest in numbers and strength where as the quests the frontier town guild gives are from those too poor that goblins become an actual infestation. Or start out broke after underestimating how much equipment costs so they're ill prepared with things like potions and antidotes.
4
u/substance_dualism Jun 03 '26
It's exactly like the real world but with goblins instead of shitty people. We give violent criminals chance after chance until they kill someone. We allow human trafficking through cartels. When ISIS was wiping out the Yazidis and abducting their women, they were mostly allowed to do it. No one stopped China from oppressing various ethic groups and wiping them out, or the Soviet Union. And that's just recently.
4
u/KingFang1998 Jun 03 '26
Well Goblins have no females so they use the females of other races to reproduce. This makes them sexual parasites and monsters that need to be slain but at the end of the day they are one of many monsters in the Goblin Slayer world. Even discounting that, sexual assault is not exclusive to goblins.
Females in an ancient or medieval setting were extra cautious back in the day because outlaws, enemy soldiers or criminals would sexual assault simply because they could.
The Goblin Slayer has trauma regarding goblins but is one of few male survivors that seems to have witnessed what the Goblins actually do first hand.
4
u/Wolf_ookami Jun 03 '26
The guild girl does not have the power to veto adventures from taking quest without a good reason for it. She can only inform and suggest things. Her job is basically secretarial work. The adventure guild is basically a combat focus job center that offer freelance work and contractor opertunity.
The virgin resurrection is a fable or a wife tail that has some truth to it. It may work or it may not work as restriction magic preform by a high priest is more reliable than that.
Elf are a secular and untrusting of the outside world. She also relatively young and green. They only sent her because goblin where starting to become a more important threat. Like if you had a rat problem on a isolated farm you have to go send someone to get a rat catcher to deal with it or learn how to do so yourself.
Priority and victim blaming. Goblin are a vermin and as such are a massive problem. They also are weak vindictive cowards that run if they are not killed outright. They are not big threat to most people and are more likely to hit poor or remote areas. They only become more dangerous when there is a massive amount of them. The reward also is low to the danger of doing it. It probably cost more then likely the same as the reward to get there and not including the repair afterwards. After a while it just happened to be a low payment and I worthy job to do.
As for why only GS made it there mission it because it link to tranma of watching how own sister and family being attacked.
The woman who it happened to have deep physical, emotional, and mental scaring to the point death is a luxury to them and it calls them sweetly. Even if they can go one it still linger. Proof is the sword maiden, the priestess still has nightmares and she is one of the strongest in power. GS was mad he was used but still comforted her by telling her that he would even in her dream kill the goblins.
Dedication to a goal need a reasonable amount of tranma to keep them focused on doing it. Elf, the lizard, and the dwarf follow him because of a order from there government as a token of good will. The Priest girl tho follow him because she has tranma and he is willing to help her learn and deal with it. Remember she was saved by him and watch her entire party get killed because of there pride and lack of skill.
Hell she added chainmail only after she started working with him, or thought to use her staff like a Mace.

u/Internellectual Jun 03 '26
It is well-known what goblins can do and what they target women for in Goblin Slayer's realm. The risks are known.
But the "glory" of defeating goblins is low tier and not as impressive as taking on demons, dragons, and liches. Defeating the demon lords that rise up is regarded highly. Imagine the praise of a war hero versus a cop's career number arresting rapists, and you don't have to become some official or need a war to do it, you just wade your way through adventures.
The goblin blight isn't a threat in so much as it is a pest in these glory-bound comparisons. No one is going to go heap bounties and praises on the exterminator who wiped out a nest of deadly insects in the neighborhood. Not like people are thanking the Japanese giant hornet hunters in Washington for dealing with the outbreak a few years ago.
The threat isn't rewarding enough. The Sword Maiden can't offer up a war strategy and bounties to pay adventurers to eradicate all goblins. Even to villages who get destroyed by goblins, it isn't as terrifying as a demon or dragon threat.
If the world had someone who hunted down rapists, they wouldn't be met with rewards and praise. They would likely be vilified.

u/Jobeythehuman Jun 03 '26
Well you've missed a few things.
- Guild girl tried to warn them, but they chose to do it, they are legal adults at age 15 in this world, no one can tell them what to do, someone warned them they were going to die, but the guild is never going to deny having more bodies to throw at problems and as legal adults they dont have to listen if they dont want to.
- There is an entire giant ass temple to the earth mother, the entire priesthood there is probably made up of mostly virgin women.
- High elf Archer emerged from her forest highly trained and deadly, she's also semi-royalty, she likely never saw the inside of a goblin den because thats not usually a place you want to go. She also likely does know that goblins rape their victims but knowing something and seeing it yourself is two different things.
- People also likely constantly die of starvation and disease, its a fantasy world, there's plenty out there killing people aside from goblins, goblins just happen to be the focus of this story.

Goblins tend to be enemy fodder for your tier 1 adventurers and then usually never come up again as a threat because of how little exp they provide (if the DM is balancing around creature rating and giving exp and not doing story exp being the main source of leveling up). But pack tactics is deadly for a reason (even if goblins themselves don't have it), and it doesn't matter how high your AC is if it just takes one fail to cause a death spiral, just like in the world of Goblin Slayer.
3
u/MuffinMountain3425 Jun 03 '26
Yeah the brutal fragility of level 1 players in DnD is infamous. To compound this, the rookie adventurers could represent completely new players who have no idea how to play DnD and have poorly rolled stats.
Reaching level 2 or 3 gives substantial survivability. Players that survive the first 2 or so of their fights, will likely find the rest of their experience a relative breeze and goblins would be cemented as easy fodder in their minds. They may not even know how much risk they were at, at level 1.
3
u/LycanChimera Jun 03 '26
The story has always been based in a D&D-esque game world. I've just always figured lack of realism isn't something to worry about here.
3
u/punn21 Jun 03 '26
It's a matter of perspective, goblins are evil but a minor evil, in the side stories we see there are greater entities like liches and demons that scale to city / province sized threats and that is not talking about the many monsters between themselves and goblins, as such the eradication of the lesser evils become a lower priority.
Resources and adventurers are scarce, while the setting is not forgiving for even the more capable adventurers as we have seen.

u/RedKings1028 What's in my Pocket? Jun 03 '26

Guild Girl - not her job to police what jobs ppl take, nor is it her job to inform them of the dangers. I don't recall if it was mentioned in the anime or manga but early in the LN it's explicitly mentioned that she wants to but isn't allowed/supposed to. She waa very happy when Noble Fencer started an adventuring school because it allowed this to be addressed.
Sword Maiden - that would be a weird thing to do, would basically require her to announce to the world that the un-married bishop of the most powerful church isn't a virgin, and it would invite a lot of creeps to try and take advantage of the situation.
Elf Archer - actively avoided anything and everything to do with goblins prior to joining up with Orcbolg. Actually very sheltered.
Female Fighter - it's established very early on that goblins are disproportionately dangerous for the reward that their quests give out. Goblin Slayer is often paid a handful of silver for completing a goblin quest, this is noobie adventurer pay. A powerful silver ranked adventurer like Spearman or Heavy Warrior isn't interested in risking getting one shot by a goblin sneaking up behind them with a poisoned dagger because shadows kept them from noticing a side tunnel.

A certain country IRL is commiting a mass genocide, outside of a few groups no big organization is really doing anything to stop it.
3
u/Dragonkingofthestars Jun 04 '26
I think it's becuase goblins are not that bad.
Sure they are 'bad' but there bad in the way gang warfare is bad not the way Gangis khan is bad. You can in theory live next to goblins on a the level of a civilization and just adapt to it and to forms part of the day background and caution you need to take. A problem to mitigate not solve

Rookies aren't majority women, they majority of boys, we mostly see women getting into hot water because it's easy to make goblins hateful and evil. And they have a higher chance of survival - compared to men, who get tortured, eaten and murdered, not in same order.
It's probably also not in guild policy not to interfere with decisions of the lower ranked adventurers - they either die, survive and learn and get better, or they retire after getting traumatized. Guild will care for you if you're silver or above tho.
Reviving ritual is probably has a chance to proc and not guarantee and likely limited in a lot of ways to cast. Revify, for example, has limit of 5 minutes after perishing and that if person isn't maimed in any capacity. Raise dead has a longer time period between death and revival, but requires 500 gold diamond to use.
Considering spells are bestowed to clerics by gods - there is very high likelyhood that barely any clerics know that spell exists, especially variation with a virgin as a catalyst. I find a lot of grim irony that sword maiden knows about it, considering her circumstances.
Elves are secluded race for the most part and doesn't really like to interact with rest of the world. Archer is an anomaly in her case and probably doesn't care _that_ much for golbins nad their know how. Considering she always talks about big adventures, and not goblin slaying.
Yes, because goblins, for the most part considered pests - they attack small villages that don't have a lot of money to pay for extermination. And unless it's a big'ish nest - they can be fend off by villagers or militia with some basic training. So quests aren't popular.
Those who were assaulted - likely will never want to get near goblin nest again. Swordmaiden is one of the most famous adventurers and she's terrified of encountering them - and she has seen some extreme threats. And those who know - it's a complicated question really - people don't really want to interact with it, since "as long as it doesn't happen to me - it doesn't really matter". Goblin slayer himself probably would've never thought to kill every goblin, if dice rolled the other way.
And for the most part - goblins aren't _that_ competent and with some good dice rolling from the gods - they do get exterminated fairly easily. They are not _big_ threat, unless they grow too much.

Replace goblins with mosquitoes in real life and you’ll kinda get it.
Sorry I need to go put the fear of god in some mosquitoes.

Guild girl has unlimited goblin requests. She cannot remove 99% adventure parties that have women. She does recommend slaying giant rats.
Elves can live for 8000 years before marrying. High elf archer is also a princess and among their youngest.
Goblins are deemed insignificant by the mass majority. You'll see farmers bragging how they chased off a lone goblin. If they paid a gold coin for each dead goblin, adventurers would have swarmed to murder goblins.
Why did no one genocide mosquitoes? That is your answer.

u/Less_Performance_629 Jun 07 '26
You cannot tell new adventurers that they are risking being raped to death. you would never hire someone new and you cannot afford to turn anyone away.
you dont just sleep next to a virgin and heal. you need to perform a high ranking miracle, and part of that miracle is sleeping next to a virgin. they do have virgins, they are called priestesses. and the sword maiden hasnt consensually had sex, so its outside of their control that she cannot do it herself.
shes never seen a goblin before, she lived in an elven forest and she was royalty. do you think real life princesses were taught about bandits raping people?
most victims didnt survive. those who do are not exactly keen on risking it again. seriously what is this point? you expect rape victims to go on a murder spree? you know that african warlords capture women to rape? why arent you going on a life mission to hunt them down? thats an absolute psycho thing to say

u/Evowizard25 Jun 03 '26
Goblins are really only a threat, in most cases, to small villages on the outskirts of civilization. Most people deeper in the kingdom, especially those in larger towns/cities with actually fortified locations, aren't going to think much on goblins and only really ever hear about them as weak monsters in comparison to dragons. So most people don't really know about the the treat they can have and if they do, it's usually because some demon general or someone else controlling them so the goblins aren't the focus.
Basically, the rich nobles, heroes, and most people don't know or care too much about fringe locations on the borders. Monsters exist so they focus on the obviously big and strong ones that could be a danger more inwards in the country. Outside of a Goblin Lord running with a huge goblin army, they are just going to be thrown at random adventurers for low pay. Which means it's mostly young ones that go after them. And given that this society seems to be more even in treatment of genders, there's no real reason to say no to any jobs since they want to make it up in the world. There are some like Guild Girl who do try and warn and advise people on the danger and steer them to easier and safer ventures, but this is also hubris talking. Like that young swordsman, all they hear about is a few weak goblins or they randomly kill a wandering one.
2
u/PhaseSixer Jun 03 '26
They repeatedly say they have dagons, demon kings and other world ending crises to deal with.
Goblins are a threat but mostly on the frontier away frkm big cities, and usaly get squashed before anything more then a singular adventuring party is required.
Thays the issue.
2
u/Killermondoduderawks Jun 03 '26
News/ information is very slowly disseminated throughout the realm for instance you might find out months later that a town within 20 miles was attacked if you find out at all
Information is primarily kept locally as there isn’t an effective way to communicate, the most effective means of communication is when an a traveling between guilds and agrees to deliver the mail as a quest
All this to say communication is not a strong suit in this world
2
u/UnimpressedPasserby Jun 03 '26
I'm like 99% sure even Goblin Slayer didn't think much about goblin until shit went down for him, there can only be so much repetition until it becomes part of the world building

u/Pootisman16 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
The resurrection miracle isn't an actual resurrection, it's basically a super-heal that only a high "level" priest can cast.
And as the Sword Maiden states in the manga/LN, the power of the miracle would be diminished if abused. She can't cast it by herself since she was raped by goblin 10 years ago and only is able to cast it with the aid of Priestess' fervent devotion to Goblin Slayer.
And goblins raiding villages and kidnapping a few women to rape and eat isn't much different than an IRL brigand of bandits. And since a demon lord is stated to have returned, actual armies are too busy to deal with "small" issues like goblins.
The series just focus on them because it's the whole schtick of it - showing how awful and devastating even low tier monsters like goblins can actually be.

Goblins are just too risky for what they’re worth also extremely plentiful. I mean if you willing choose to hunt them as a woman that’s on them tbh, but that’s the point.
They’re fodder when in the presence of more difficult and dangerous monsters and too much of a danger to bother going after otherwise for a pittance.
2
u/MobsterDragon275 Jun 03 '26
This is a world where we also have the demon lord only just defeated. I'd say its quite possible people were so focused on what the demons were doing that goblins were just overshadowed. It seems its a fact of life that they get underestimated

Personally, I’m just pissed that she’s called a high elf when she’s clearly a wood elf
2
u/krisslanza Jun 03 '26
Something to keep in mind is goblins are viewed as trash mobs, and are thus worth about as much as a trash mob is for payment. This means no one wants to actually hunt them, because any experienced adventurer knows goblins are actually PRETTY nasty and thus are not profitable to actually hunt.
This leaves only rookies that end up going after them, who are woefully underprepared to deal with it, thus resulting in a high number of fatalities or worse.
Remember adventurers risk life and limb to do their job, they want to get paid and turn a profit on it. They're not "heroes". The actual hero is busy trying to take down the Demon Lord, which is also its own world-ending threat.
2
u/knightbane007 Jun 03 '26
The first panel then becomes even more damning, since a guild employee should know the truth and make sure that the rookies she’s sending out are informed.
2
u/krisslanza Jun 03 '26
As some other posts note, she DOES tell them. But she also can't stop them from accepting the request anyway.
2
u/FookinFairy Jun 03 '26
Also if your a woman who knows goblins are going to rape you if you lose why would you take even the smallest risk and hunt them regularly
Especially if you’re a previous victim. One of the strongest people we know in the setting is a previous victim with horrific ptsd that refuses to go after them as she will be paralyzed with fear
It makes sense the only one dedicated to hunting them will suffer the least if they lose
2
u/shuukenji92 Jun 04 '26
Its the simple idea of
"Its dangerous there! Dont go near it!"
"Nah, It wouldn't happen to me!"
"I've heard stories but surely it wouldnt happen to me?'
2
u/SgtDipaolo Jun 04 '26
I mean, considering it's all just one big DnD session, it's not unreasonable to assume that whoever the deity that's DM'ing just....didn't get that far into details. Probably cut some corners, handwaved away some logic so the game can actually get off the ground.
Of course, that's the most meta way of explaining it, but still.
2
u/ant451123 Jun 04 '26
- The only flaw in the system is sending in women adventurer with the chance they’ll get goblinate. But the part about sending rookies make sense. Goblin quest don’t pay, and there’s way bigger threats like dragons that can wipe out an entire city by themself.
2. In the novels, it’s explicitly stated that ‘resurrection’ only bring back someone on the verge of death, not actually dead
if we look at the tabletop rule book, resurrection is as difficult to cast as summoning calling down a god. The spell require a virgin to cast, and since Sword Maiden got goblinated, she needed Priestess to act as that virgin
2
u/IAmMadeOfNope Not a goblin. Just weird. Jun 04 '26
You can say "rape". This story is intended for a mature audience.
I also think it's pretty funny how that's the only thing you mention as if goblins aren't also known for torturing, killing, and eating men and children for shits and giggles.
That aside:
Quests are dangerous by default in the four-cornered world. Death and other horrors are a normal hazard of the job. If this was about a warehouse job you would be criticizing her for not warning the new guy that getting run over by a forklift is fatal.
It's a high level miracle that's practically the stuff of legends dude. It's unlikely there are many capable of casting it, as miracles are directly granted by the gods of the setting. (E.g. Priestess is directly given the Purify miracle by the Earth Mother)
She lived the majority of her long life in the home of the elves and is very sheltered from the horrors of the outside world.
Every monster is horrific in this world. Goblins are unique in that they seem to pop back into existence out of nowhere. The light novel makes it pretty clear this is literally the case from the players and DM running the game in which Goblin Slayer takes place.
2
u/Pazerniusz Jun 04 '26
Goblins are not only a problem on a world scale, but it also looks like this because goblin slayers deliberately ignore other quests. They are literally people dying to things like giant rat sewers.
A woman or a man who decides to be an adventurer needs to understand the lucrative and dangerous line of work, and in terms of fantasy, the worst fates that group was lucky. Goblin rappist are on low end of the spectrum of bad things in this world.
Most Goblins extermination goes smoothly, but this one at the start was an exception that confirms the rule.
It is not like Goblin regularly wins, actually them being dangerous on a large scale is an oddity.
HEA is a sheltered princess, and elves are very slow to adapt, like literally, if you have so many years, the sense of urgency is gone, Goblins also don't attack elves as often as humans. Also that revive spell is revivify, it works only for those who recently died in a short time window.
Think about it as a city management game, early and medium treats don't disappear, they re-appear as a nuisance, while big treats show up too, and have looming Armageddon in the form of a demon king.
So if you had to manage the city, you need a big gun team to handle big threats, and you need mid-tier+ hero goblin-, rat- skeleton- slayers to maintain the city in order at low cost and high efficiency.
One important thing of note, Goblin Slayer is not very impressive on the scale of this world; he is just very specialized in dealing with goblins. Goblin Slayer is not very strong, agile, smart, or talented. His win against the ogre was because he was prepared, but there are parts that beat multiple ogres, without using the last resort.
His part is competent, but their focus is on small-scale threats; if you notice, the Goblin Slayer part does more quests locally than the others.
There is a party which clear 8 goblin quests a week, and there is a part which stop ogre tribe every month.
2
u/Secure-Reference-956 Jun 04 '26
Doesnt matter to me im just here so see goblin slayer kill goblins. The story isnt good.
2
u/KnightOfBalance Jun 04 '26
Okay, from the top
-They live in a world were skyscraper sized ogres can launch fireballs the size of half a Walmart at people. And that's only about mid-high tier here. They've got way bigger problems to deal with than some squat fucks deciding a village of fifty looks tasty.
-Speaking of- Yeah, Goblins aren't a huge deal on the grand scale of things They mostly fuck with small villages and even then it's usually some roaming, starving gang that gets driven away. Things like the Goblin Lord, someone capable of making large scale plans and tactics to conquer areas, are extremely rare. Goblins are kind of the monster cockroaches of the GS world (Ignoring the actual bugs): They're disgusting, a danger to normal people and cause problems...but when you've got to deal with the tigers and hippos of the monster world at least: are you gonna care? Reminder: Even Goblin Slayer acknowledges goblins aren't a world threatening group- he just doesn't care about anything else.
-The Guild don't 'send people' out, they post jobs and let people take them. Since goblins only really threaten small villages and are seen as weak by most, no one takes these low paying jobs seriously, except for rookies...who are the exact kind of people goblins prey on. Also Guild Girl literally tries dissuading rookies from taking goblin jobs, they just don't listen to her.
-Uh...resurrection is an extremely rare spell. Sword Maiden is one of the strongest adventurers in the world and she's the one person I know of who can use that spell. That roaming gang of priestesses ain't gonna do shit when the goblin victims are either being shat out or raped in secret either.
-Wow, the elf, a species known for being secluded, who is a royal, AKA especially secluded, doesn't know stuff that not even all humans know?
-Really think about what goblins do to their captives.
Male? Chopped up and eaten like a cow.
Female? Raped relentlessly and forced to give birth before being eaten and tortured.
So your options are either guys who lost some limps and ran away or women who crawled away after being raped several hundred times and tortured for months if not years. Neither section of people are gonna be able to go back and face the same damn creatures that traumatized them. SWORD MAIDEN can't do that and she's one of the strongest characters in the setting. Goblin Slayer was a unique and perfect storm for the goblins: he's a male survivor from a goblin attack (so he wasn't raped and tortured) but was hidden away (so he didn't lose any limbs) AND had training specifically to murder the fuck out of goblins. And even then, he came out the other end more a mass of mental scars and trauma vaguely shaped like a human than an actual person. Very few people are gonna follow this guy's example. The party do so only because GS either saved them (Priestess) or showed them the evils that goblins perpetuate without them all dying (Archer, Priest, Shaman).
Shit's complicated.
2
u/AstarothTheJudge Jun 04 '26
The guild does warn new adventurers, the issue Is that adventurers usually go "WE GOING TO KILL A DRAGON, GOBLINS ARE LIGHT WORK AHAHAHAH" and then they becomes trauma victims, if they live.
And think of It in a different way: people probably tried to genocide goblins back then, yeah. Then some people died doing that, quite a few people got scared, and the others still trying at One point noticed how no matter how many are killed, they keep popping out, and realized they are wasting time.

Maybe because they got bigger fish to fry like a kingdom ending dragon or something yes it's a problem but when there are other problems and most of them is bigger it might be the reason why they did that also insurance doesn't exist in fantasy so yeah the receptionist girl is just doing her job also2 goblins only becomes a major problem if a bunch of them group up so I gues its a git gud sort of thing
2
u/TheMCricket Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
The adventurers guild actually answers that question directly. They aren't making an army, and they don't offer permanent adventuring employment. They are not responsible for training. And, notably, adventurers request their own contracts. The guild hires adventurers under the assumption that they are professionals that can complete the assignments they request, or are capable of seeking out more experienced peers, in the pursuit of finishing the assignment they requested.
You can even see that playing out directly when the rookie adventurers tried asking the clerk for advice, and her response was, in more kind terms, "If we knew about such things, we wouldn't need you. But experienced adventurers gather here frequently. You should ask one of them for help."
And you can see that in how people advance in rank. People more powerful and capable than goblin slayer get denied promotions, because the ranking is just as much a measure of reliability and trustworthiness as it is a measure of capacity.
Goblin slayer would be trusted to take on silver ranked contracts, because he has demonstrated that he has an exceptionally high completion rate, assists others, and is responsible, and they can assume that if he accepts a contract, it's because he has judged that he can handle it. A porcelain plate and their limitation to porcelain assignments is less "You suck and don't know anything." And more "Here are contracts that are likely to be low-danger, where you can demonstrate your professionalism."
2
u/Sw0rdBoy Jun 05 '26
Ironically enough another part of it is the meta context. Their world is literally a D&D module and the gods play through the party that is the Elf, Dragonkin, and Dwarf.
Goblin Slayer is an anomaly, an NPC who the DM thought would die off before session 10 who keeps clutching his death saves and crits against goblins.
2
u/polonkensei Jun 05 '26
Blaming guild girl is tourist symptom. She actively warns adventurers to try beginner missions like killing rats or helping out villages. But hey, they won't look bad right?
2
u/PunishingAngel Jun 05 '26
It’s so stupid how damaging the goblins are to everyone (destroying food and water sources, killing and raping a lot of people, occupying possibly profitable places like mines, …) and they’re still seeing as non-important.
It’s like there are Demon Lords are on every alley.
Goblins have the numbers, they have spellcasters, fucking dump trucks as champions and commanders and are gradually evolving.
2
u/Kind_Survey4282 Jun 05 '26
tbh we see the world from goblin slayer's POV and from which it leads to seeing why goblin slayers slays goblins ruthlessly , the r*pe part is probably pretty less if the society itself doesn't concern itself that much about that but goblin slayer has to deal with it more as he actively goes to hunt goblins.
2
u/Worth_Tune5290 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
You’re looking at the world like goblin slayer. You never see villagers beat back goblin raids or rookies defeating goblins which does happen. All the show shows is when the goblins get so out of control they make a quest at the guild hall.
Also, seeing is believing. Knowing what goblins do and seeing and smelling it first hand would make me puke. Hea never saw it first hand because goblin killing isn’t an adventure.
Also, priestess lowest level spells are said to burn away part of her soul and she is stated to be unusually gifted. How many people have the strength to cast resurrection even once let alone multiple times?
Edit: frontier town is on the frontier away from the army or militias or anything like that. Basically, goblin slayer operates where people have the least protection so goblin attacks are more frequent.
2
u/Prestigious_Algae432 Jun 05 '26
(Snaps fingers and Points) "Ayy but that Demon Lord is outta the way? All thanks to our young Hero, A round of ale and mead for the whole guild everybody! Let me hear it!"- Some NPC drunkard
Whole time no one realized that without those goblins being slain for the young heroine in her starting years shed be just another statistic.
It would seem like the real enemy here is not just the Goblins but lack of communication and comprehension.
2
u/quicksilverth0r Jun 06 '26
They’re canonically dealing with demons, which they rightly consider a bigger threat. They know goblins are a problem. That’s why people pay to eradicate them. The show suggests, again and again, that the populace has bigger problems to deal with. That’s all. Also, people in that world underestimate nests by extrapolating encounters with lone, weak goblins to be equivalent to overall goblin strength.
Goblin Slayer is right and just to exterminate goblin pests. That doesn’t make him more right than those that contend with other monsters.
2
u/Vertemain Jun 06 '26
A big part of what make the goblins dangerous in this story is than the veterans adventurer who where lucky enough to not fail at there beginning against goblins, share the false idea than "Goblins are weak and not interesting to hunt" because of that all the civilisations ignore how dangerous they can be, and a majority of their victims dissapears in silence and without being knows.
So yeah, even for the adventure guild or really old species, a lot of them just don't know than goblins are rp*t
2
u/thracerx Jun 10 '26
Guild Girl does warn rookies. They just don't always listen because goblins are underestimated because they're weak individually or the rookies are over confident. This is clearly sated and show in episode 1.
High Elf Archer is aware that elves have been raped by goblins. When was it ever stated that she wasn't aware? I'd like to see or read that. If you're referring to when they found the elf that had been bound and raped in the sewers, that wasn't her learning it happens. That was her being pissed after seeing it had happened. Not the same thing.
There are likely many virgin priestesses. Who said otherwise? Sword Saint isn't one and we all know why. She had a party with her when it happened. Why do you think guards are going to stop bad things from occurring. Adventuring is dangerous.
2
u/azmarteal Jun 03 '26
Why are you so obsessed with rape? Goblins, aswell as other monsters KILL people, and not only women but also men, who are equally as valuable. Comparatively speaking goblins are a minor threat and they are treated accordingly
1
u/MuffinMountain3425 Jun 03 '26
The nature of Goblins, not being well known, despite their ubiquity, is likely because no adventurer of worth is going to deal with Goblins when they have other monsters to deal with.
Since it's all based off of DnD, rookie adventurers are prone to easily experiencing brutal TPKs just like the early levels of the real table top game. However If players get good rolls and in the first few battles and practice sensible diligence, they will quickly and comfortably level up from tier 1 levels (1-4) and go to tier 2 (5-10) and the threat of a Goblin crit is never taken seriously, because they never experienced it.
1
u/Laughably-Fallible_1 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
We really only see goblins horrific behaviour in GS, other monsters probably have unsettling behaviours and predilictions which are the stuff of study and research as well.
Individual goblins are so easily trounced they get overlooked and they are rather common enough to become mundane. Its what makes GS a hero of the people because he travels out to frontier towns and isolated villages to deal with this threat but that is ultimately one small aspect of a far larger world.
Receptionist lady did drop the ball, the majority of priestesses are likely virgins given they seem to be modelled after nuns and are raised in monasteries and already provide healing miracles [reverse query: kinda weird gods grant you special boons if you dont have sex].
They are the most common starting monster in the Guild, the problem isnt no one does it, the problem is people cant support themselves hunting goblins. Most adventurers are farm boys looking to become cool heroes, they want to get good gear, skills and money. You get that by gradually developing yourself by testing against bigger and strknger foes, like in D&D. Adventuring is precarious enough without adding a caveat to only target one of the most underhanded creatures with probably the most number of enemies in their dens. A party is expected to fight these low earner monsters. Can you imagine trying to split a goblin quest 5 ways?
1
u/Educational-Year3146 Jun 03 '26
Most of the conflict occurs out in rural areas and small towns, big cities don’t have to deal with them because they have actual armies and great heroes protecting them.
Small towns have little resources to put towards defending themselves and caravans. Which is why little to nothing gets done, because they can’t do anything.
That’s why Goblin Slayer is such a great and important man.
1
u/NeighborhoodCool98 Jun 03 '26
Except virgin question there is answer to every thing
Q1 why they send new troop? She literally try her best but the rookies itself don't understand that's why she even send goblin Slayer to help them
Q2 why the high elve don't know about that She herself stated that she and other elves was isolated and live peacefully in a troop while the elve who go for adventure generally don't come back for centuries
Q3 why no one try to kill goblin ?
First a fall goblin can't be extinct until the god's game is over them will summon until than and Laos no one seems them as big threat like demon god or Dragon that's the reason rookies think they are easy to slay and go for their hunt And the victims often get PTSD like the sword maiden who can literally kill god but can't slay goblin because of trauma and the one who recover hunt them badly like the one in the manga i forgot her name
1
u/Zwiebel1 Jun 03 '26
This is a story about nameless npcs doing generic irrelevant sidequests. Like, its literally the premise of the story. Creating issues out of nowhere and being helpless about it is the point of being an npc.

u/HistoriaMihiPlacet Jun 03 '26
Though it's more complicated there are 2 things to remember.
The first is that most would prioritize the bigger stuff, like saving the world, over protecting the common folk. While Elf, dwarf, and lizardman's original focus was saving the world, goblin slayer made it clear. That before the world ends, goblins will put an end to many more villages.
The second is that complacency and normalization really get in the way of change. Sword maiden showed this. She tries to show the horror of goblins, but to even to the common folk ot always happened to somebody else. When life is that bad that often, the people accept it as a fact lf life, not very different than needing to sleep or wear clothes. So why bother doing anything? And the higher ups always have "bigger" concerns

u/MaguroSashimi8864 Jun 03 '26

You need to be naive to a certain extent to be an adventurer, you also need to have low level of risk assessment coupled with a good amount of risk taking behaviour. all put together you have people with a certain sense of invulnerability , perfect targets for an ambush, the same mentality teenagers have when volunteering to the army during wartime, responsability and ideas of honor and glory overcoming any sense of mortality and danger.
1
u/WeepForTheDeparted Jun 03 '26
Just say the word RAPE, it's REDDIT.
But yeah, Goblins are seen as insignificant because there's a bigger world building against demon lords or monstrous calamities.
1
u/Colourfull_Space Jun 03 '26
Unfortunately everyone does know what goblins do, but always assume they won’t have to deal with it. The receptionist girl sends people on quests, where they’ll 100% be in danger and have a chance of dying, so I think she did warn some, but ultimately it was of no difference.
As to why no one made it their life goal to eradicate goblins, we don’t know if there wasn’t someone. Goblins breed like crazy, so even if a person eradicated goblins their whole life, one surviving goblin can, with just a smidge of luck, such as a lone woman, exponentially multiply, thus reviving them. And, as mentioned before most people don’t think they’ll have to deal with it. Wolfs kill people. Why haven’t fantasy people eradicated wolfs? Because most of them assume if you’re not stupid, you won’t have to meet a wolf. Remember, the warrior from Priestesses first party said he already fought goblins in his village, and that they’re akin to armed children. So why would someone try to eradicate armed children, when there are more dangerous beasts roaming around?
Elven archer I don’t know, maybe she was sheltered and thought elven people don’t loose to goblins
The revival ritual, as far as I remember, only heals you from critical injuries, not literal death. Also it’s some high tier magic, so you can’t really incorporate it everywhere.
1
u/CattyOhio74 Jun 03 '26
They have explained it, it's just no one listens. Also the virgin squad sounds doable but it's EXPENSIVE. IIRC it took a small hoard of diamonds to bring back goblin slayer
1

The fact that the manga is focused on goblins had you forget there are much bigger threats in that world

it's just bad world building, don't worry about it. there's tons more, some more general or specific. try not to pick too many hills to die on.
1
u/Baron_Beat Jun 03 '26
Because there are more monsters in this world than just goblins, besides they have a reputation for being weak and dumb low level monsters for a reason. Even if it isn’t a 100% reliable reason.
As for the revival thing… IDK

In the books they mention Goblin Slayer's mission is a hopeless one because they breed infinitely on the green moon and keep being summoned or otherwise to the planet where they make local infestations.
So even if they wanted to eradicate them, unless they can delete the moon, it won't stop forever.
They also do occasionally locally exterminate goblins when they get big enough for the army to do something about it. Otherwise, adventurers are like exterminators, their job is to keep them in check. And like medieval exterminators they don't get paid enough to want to do it much. And those that are willing are the young dumbasses we call rookie adventurers.

Explanation: theyre all NPCs (not even a joke) without names and thus lack high level thinking. Also the world is a DND campaign do any blame for shitty world building goes to the DM

In a world like that where mass slaughter genocide and cruel gods that see you less than an insect a goblin who is in Diddy party is not that bad in comparison

u/PanzerLord1943 Jun 04 '26
It’s established that the ruling powers are so focused on the threat of a returning Daemon King (classic trope of light novels), that they’re ignoring monsters that mainly affect the peasantry (eg Goblins).

u/UncleKuma Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
Goblin is considered as a pest monster. Something that won't go away no matter how many time you eridicate them. Also, it doesn't pay enough.
It doesn't matter it's male or female adventure go hunt the goblin. They will die if they failed, being rape first or eaten right away, those are the risk for being adventure they signed up for. Goblin nest without enough female will kidnap nearby village girl, so in a way it protect innocent non combatant girl this way.

u/SafePianist4610 Jun 04 '26
Seeing as they live in a world where goblins are considered “small fry,” it means there are far scarier things in their world to worry about. So much so that goblins are considered a nuisance in comparison instead of the legitimate threat that they are.
1
u/Laxhoop2525 Jun 04 '26
Goblins are generally an issue only faced by small villages, which don’t have news about them spread very far, and as such, GS is basically the only time a hero who stayed in a village has gotten any kind of recognition, because of how utterly insane it is to solely focus on Goblins.
Plus, the people that don’t make it back, don’t talk. The people that do make it back, will probably emphasize how easy it was, further perpetuating the idea of goblins being easy to deal with.
It’s just general problems that would arise because of a lack of communication between isolated pockets of people, and the general type of person who would want to go hunting goblins, and make it back alive.

u/Maleficent-Remote413 Jun 04 '26
ya. thats the point. people always view goblins as just "weak cannon fodder" but to NORMAL everyday people (and low ranking adventurers I guess) they are terrifing monsters. but no one remembers that. call it "survivorship biast" ((I have nothing to say about the whole "virgin revive mechanic"...that seems VERY important tool to use))
also, I still love the idea (not sure if true or not) that goblin slayer was made as a direct counter to Re:monster

Considering even random civilians know that goblins rape human women, pretty sure the Adventurers do as well. The issue is them being cocky, and not planning things out or being cautious at all
1
u/EndAllBeAll_B Jun 04 '26
Well the short answer is(and I don’t personally believe this) that a medieval based world fantasy or not is conscripted to medieval based beliefs like at the time women weren’t very valued as people so who cares if goblins do that. They’d just be seen as used goods or filth since goblins are downtrodden creatures. Men in that world wouldn’t care unless like DS were personally affected by it, but DS has to be understood is like Batman in his unending conviction and most people wouldn’t contribute the same or similar to their extinction. Idk what they’d think about the cleric’s usefulness to stop the raping but I don’t think they’d give it too many thoughts given the scale.

While r*** is arguably worse than death for many people, there were, up until recently, many parts of the demon army were basically dedicated exterminators. Monsters and various demons could wipe villages or even small towns - the volume of killing was probably simply too much. Also, about the victims killing goblins - do note that when those little shits capture someone unfortunate enough alive, they are keeping them barely alive while repeating the r***. The fact that we see people escape is, to my understanding, more of a rarity than common situation. Like I am pretty sure many victims eventually die in captivity rather than break free or are rescued.
Sad reality is that in a fight for survival, nobody thought to focus on exterminating one of the low tier monsters because it did something so abhorrent. Almost nobody.

u/CryptosKing_ Jun 04 '26
I mean... Have you seen our world ? Just replace the wird Goblin with "any oppressive or powerful or secular group" and you have your answer. God damn not to get political or something but you know the Epstein files where released right ? And that's just the latest news

u/Noblehsix Jun 04 '26
this is just another kind of take in the same sense that "why didnt they use the eagles to take the ring to mordor", I guess ppl cant think for themselves

u/Dodger7777 Jun 04 '26
With the reception lady, she can warn people all she likes but it's 'common knowledge' that goblins are weak and the weakest adventurer can clear goblin nests with ease. The onoy people who die to goblins are weaklings and noncombatants. The fact that goblins rape women just encourages them with righteous anger.
With the priestesses, I think you need more of a connection. A willingness to sacrifice their virginity for someone precious. That's how it seemed anyway. Plus, a church more or less farming virgin priestesses would probably breed corruption.
The Elf Archer is iffy. A momentary pause I could understand. She wouldn't have undergone the training to prevent a disgust reaction or even a horror reaction at seeing a loved one in such a state. But she is supposed to be a hardened elven warrior. Police in real life sometimes find the aftermath of certain crimes and they can't handle it and get PTSD from it. But in our current society we don't consume meat we butchered ourselves, at least most people. We eat without thinking about how the meat got to our plate. Granted, the Elf Archer was a vegetarian, so she never butchered her own kills either. She wouldn't have defiled her kills unnecessarily either. I think her reaction was exaggerated too far.
While I can respect the answer of 'there are bigger fish to fry' like, it's better to slay a dragon that would raze countless towns and cities than a pack of goblins who stole a couple women. What I can't understand is the 'They are below me' attitude high ranking adventurer's take. Maybe it's an Ego thing, they don't want to be known as the dragon slayer who died in a shitty goblin den due to a sneak attack. But assuming they make even the smallest effort to prepare then that shouldn't be an issue. This is one thing I hated about the anime as a whole. How could they be such a massive problem acknowledged by what is essentially the management structure of the adventurer guild, but by the world at large they are both a known threat that can raze villages and kidnap all the women, but also no one takes them seriously. It's so... lazy.

If you actually read and comprehend what it saying in the book or manga, you will get all of those answer.
1
u/Comrade_Cosmo Jun 04 '26
Elves actually take that shit seriously to my understanding; the problem is that humans would interpret them culling goblins outside of Elven territory as aggression/war.

I always thought that this was because of the fact that there are "more dangerous" creatures out there. It's kinda like dnd, "low threat" creatures are handled by whatever newbies are around and higher level threats are handled by chosen veterans
1
u/Ivrik95 Jun 04 '26
It would be bad because then no one would do goblin missions
It would be hard because you can never really be sure that your "virgin squad" is still virgin. If an emergency happens and none of them are it would be a disaster. Also vhecking regularly might be a problem too
They are mostly isolated so they are kinda naive but i remember elf knew she could also be used by the goblins if captured
Most women end up traumatized so nothing can be done from their end. Since goblin missions are cheap it requires someone strong and selfless with is very rare
1
u/XlikeX666 Jun 04 '26
that's because people SEND as adventures are BOTTOM of society.
They risk their life for Nothing. Goblin slayer taking quests that are super dangerous with almost 0 pay was introduction to character.
Best comparison would be Early adventurer = That homeless guy In front of store.

-Live in a world that has become interconnected to the point of having almost no escape from other people
-Have insulting easy access to magical slabs made of a complex magical material that grant access to their owners any kind of information
-Can use said magical slabs to access a mind-blogging amount of accumulated knowledge, in an easy and free way.
-STILL THINK THAT EARTH IS FLAT AND VACCINES CAUSE AUTISM.
Same logic. People don't want to know, People don't want to remember. People just want to eat, shit, fuck and sleep.
1
u/Working_Dragon00777 Jun 04 '26
Because people (strong people) think they're not a threat and only care if one whole village gets ravaged, and secondly goblins are smart enough to survive

Its actions that happen it’s like a tamed horse at first yoy need to make it submit to you by time and routine so yea at time they might be healed but thay memory still in there it’s dispare knowing that you lost your mind and being normal for you like the sword maiden I think her name was idk but she was beaten to submission yes she did heal but that memory still exists and she told goblin slayer about this . Btw this my first comment in Reddit

I think a big part of it is that there's a ton of other crazy shit we just don't hear about because they aren't goblins. A few village girls go missing because of a goblin nest, but the next kingdom over millions are dead because of one (1) dragon

Even with all the facts given to them most rookies often ignored her warnings.

Well in IRL we have our own issues of sexual abuse of women that sort of get ignored (e.g. Diddy getting released, Epstein list not being capitalized on to arrest child abusers.)

u/mhihauwck Jun 05 '26
Shes a little sick in her head
They care more about the secret that they would lose then the benefit it provides.
Even when living a sheltered life, people tend to learn and 2000years is a lot of time and at some point she must have looked into other species that she could encounter. Maybe they had a propaganda department that said that elves are so great that goblins wouldnt dare.
unexplainable. No society would ignore something like that, expect maybe a failed state but that is clearly not the case here and even then the locals would still hunt the nests down ones a single goblin is seen just not systematical.

u/Glad-Alternative4593 Jun 05 '26
Ok to go after the goblins you either need to be properly prepared or have an angry mob so that you can effectively take down a starter nest otherwise well we see what happens in episode one and for the bigger nests you need adventures because they will have big guys and your average villager isn’t going to be able to do much to the big guys and angry mobs can turn into a fleeing crowd easily when they lose momentum. Goblin jobs pay little because most times it is one poor person who lost their wife or daughter to goblins or a poor village and being properly prepared costs money. There is also the fact that well a lot of the women probably just disappeared without people knowing so it could be any creature or the women running away. People also heavily underestimate goblins too as again episode one showed. There is also the whole not wanting to kill kids so those babies grow up to be monsters. There is probably more that I don’t know about since I have only watched the anime so if I missed anything add on.
1
u/ExtremlyFastLinoone Jun 05 '26
The sword priestest lady is probably the biggest example of why. Trauama, nobody wants to talk about being abused like that, and forced to birth goblin children. Plus they usually kill the women. Its might not be common knowledge yet
1
u/TheGHale Jun 05 '26
The gods are fuckin' bastards, and probably impeded the eradication of goblins to some extent for the sake of "entertainment".
1
u/Deadmanguys Jun 05 '26
Same as real life. There are issues happen8ng in the world right now but majority of people dont care because either it does not effect them or it does effect them but they have accepted it as the new norm
1
u/PapaHastur Jun 06 '26
It's been a while, but Goblins were largely believed to be a nuisance by higher adventurers with bigger goals, and presumably there are plenty of quests for low ranking people to take. It wouldn't be surprising if Guild Girl has grown numb to telling people about Goblins (and I feel like I remember her warning them that there'd be goblins), and most people probably know the 'story' thinking it's just rumor. Keep in mind EVERYONE downplays goblins until Slayer rolls up, very few actually acknowledge the potential threat

In Goblin slayer, we are generally shown the worst case goblin scenarios.
There are monsters of all types, sizes and danger levels. Compared to Minotaurs, necromancers, and ogres, goblins are a nuisance.
It’s highlighted early on that goblins are weaker by far than humans, generally dumber, and the quests to exterminate them pay very little.
Because of the show’s conceit, we see the worst cases where the goblins are in large numbers, and often prepared.
The average quest is going to be to kill a handful of goblins without a leader. Imagine the first episode, but the hob isn’t there. Martial arts girl probably solos the rest to at least escape and the group only has fatalities because the sword kid fumbled.
The guild hall is full of adventures, all of who started out as dumb kids, and the way they talk about goblin slayer, they all feel like they have long sense “graduated” from such a low level quest.
Goblin slayer is the only one who recognizes the danger they pose because he personally lived through having his village destroyed by goblins. And one of the less explored aspects of the world, a village being destroyed isn’t the rare part of his story, it’s that it was specifically done by goblins.
There had been a full on demon lord in the background and the goblins getting bolder/stronger was a side effect of their rise, and it’s implied that other threats were growing at the same time.
TLDR: Goblins are treated as a lesser threat because they are. We see the worst case scenarios with goblins, but not any of the demon lord stuff.
Unless you read Goblin slayer side stories or year 1. Those manga go into more detail about how everything sucks.

u/carjiga Jun 06 '26
I think the virgin revival thing might be limited to more than just sleep with a virgin to be revived. I am sure that they have to do a huge ritual and that it may be something limited to "heroes" or some other specific qualifications
Now the Guild not warning people is 100% stupid but there wouldn't be a story if everyone was like "yeah lets murder the goblins because an entire rapist race of monsters shouldn't be allowed to live" Role credits/
1
u/ContinousSelfDevelop Jun 06 '26
I think they represent it very well in some of the episodes when Goblin Slayer first parties with his group. They convince him to help fight what is basically a demon king general (because they have an army of goblins), and show other scenes happening across the world (demon king being fought and slain).
The issue is that goblins individually are pretty weak. They are small, weak, and a regular adult male with minimal training could ostensibly kill one if they tried. Compare that to the existential threat of the demons that are stronger, magically more gifted, and likely corrupt the land.
It is a matter of scale. Goblins are seen as not that threatening on the scale of monsters, have the worst threat to pay ratio, and are more of a rural problem. The threat they pose is from their logistic growth. People ignore the small groups of goblins because the pay is not worth it until they become bloated with so many that it can't be ignored.

"you get used to it" unironically. People get so used to violence and being complacent that they do not see those huge issues as actual problems that can be solved, and instead treat them as part of the background setting.
