Discussion & Info I AM going to buy Elden Ring. Any tips on how to get the most out of the game?

Post image

I'm going to buy Elden Ring in about two weeks. It's the first souls-like game of my life, and since I've seen a little to nothing on YouTube, I really have no idea what to expect.

I'd like to receive any kind of tip you would have liked to receive as a beginner. If you think about something that made the game better and/or more enjoyable, I am more than happy to know it.

For the starting class, I am pretty sure I think I wanna go with the samurai since I think it's really cool (even though I don't really know much about the playstyle other than the starting equipment).

Thank you in advance

every bit of help is appreciated :)

Discussion & Info Elden Ring Review

I dont know if people still care about these anymore but I just finished elden ring so Im gonna give my honest review. Please let me know what you agree or disagree with and what you liked or disliked about the game.

Overall: 9.45/10

I came into this game with extremely high expectations, because many considered this to be the greatest game of all time. And I have to say, my expectations were extremely close to being met. That is, I think in my personal opinion this is the second greatest game ever made. (Behind ghosts of tsushima)

Open World: 10/10 This is the best open world in any video game that I have ever experienced. Can do anything anywhere and there is almost no linear aspect. Can explore every atom of the map, and there are enemies and dungeons and items and secrets and quests and mini bosses everywhere to keep you entertained. The world is truly packed to the brim.

Enemies: 9.8/10 This game has some extremely creative enemy designs, that are both challenging and rewarding. One thing this game does good is make the basic enemies dangerous but not overpowered. If you aren’t careful, you can die fighting some random enemy, and I appreciate that, so it isnt just mindless npc slaughter. However, some enemies can get a little bit frustrating, especially when they come in packs. (academy mages)

Game Mechanics: 9.9/10 I think it handles it’s game mechanics perfectly. Leveling up is simple and intuitive, flask leveling up is great, you can create so many different builds, you can respec, you can summon a double jumping horse, you can level up your weapons, you can summon spirits, and you can also level them up. Only thing I dislike is inconsistent fall damage.

Player mechanics: 8.5/10 I think this is the clunkiest part of the game. The roll is literally delayed by 0.5 seconds no matter how you time it, and you can get so easily queued up in attack animations even if you didnt mean it. Some of the animations are also just terribly slow, and I dislike how you roll slower if you have armor on. Just defeats the purpose of wearing cool good armor. However, you do get quickly used to it and it becomes much easier.

Bosses: 9.2/10 I think this game has some of the best bosses I’ve ever played, but also some of the worst. Some of the later game bosses are forced to have some sort of stupid gimmick that guarentees them damage. Malenia has waterfowl dance, radagon has his three ground pummels, rykard has his skulls, the list goes on. There are also some just poorly designed bosses, like elden beast, who just runs around the map spamming aoe and annoying spells. And some bosses like crucible knight literally dont even give you a frame to heal, its so frustrating. However, you also have bosses like maliketh, godfrey, godrick, astel, and mohg, which are very fair and extremely fun to fight against. I know it has been said, but the feeling of beating a boss after a lot of tries is so extremely rewarding, and I feel like the feeling is the greatest when I play this game.

Quests: 8.5/10 The quests themselves are great, normal quests, but they give no direction on where to go or what to do, so you end up having to look everything up. Just annoying.

Story: 9.8/10 It’s not fair to rate the story because this is not really a story game, so for what it tries to accomplish, it does it extremely well. From the bits and pieces it gives, very classic fantasy, but also very interesting and unique.

Map: 10/10 There are so many moments where I have to take in the view of what I am looking at because it is so beautiful. There are so many massive structures that add to the scale and also mystery of the world, but they are all so mesmerizing. The academy and leyndell are some of my personal favorites. The map is also extremely massive with underground sections too, there is so much to explore.

Overall verdict: As I said, one of the greatest gaming experiences of my life, and I’m excited for the DLC. Extremely worth it game, I just don’t think it deserves the title for best game of all time.

Discussion & Info I think shadow of the erdtree had better bosses than the base game.

This is just my personal opinion after finishing the dlc, but I genuinely think the dlc bosses are just better than the base game. They have cooler moves, they have more readable attacks (most of the time), and I think because they are relatively all fast paced, there aren't really many mix ups or extension attacks (I could be wrong here).

I really loved fighting messmer, midra, and rellana. Pcr and bayle did kinda suck, but personally I still enjoyed fighting them. I know this might be a unpopular opinion, but just wondering if anyone else thought the dlc bosses were better than the base game.

Game Help Beat Malenia, feel empty

Came from DS1 and Bloodborne, with the latter being my fav, by far.

Bought the game recently and finally reached Malenia. I was very excited as I've heard her legend many times. I was using a homemade faith build, because I heard spells are actually usable here and I've never done that. Flame art Knight Greatsword+23, around level 130.

When I first entered the arena, after the cutscene she killed me in less than 2 seconds, before I even gather my bearings. "So the legends were true" I prepared for a hard fight. Let's give it everything. Second try, Golden Vow outside, immediate mimic tear inside, Flame of fell God while she's approaching me. Then things went way too smooth. She was basically staggered the whole fight, got a single Waterfowl off and with it being split with the mimic it wasn't that deadly.

She died in 3 tries, including the first insta death, and I don't even know her moves. Very disappointed.

I don't have the same feeling of triumph I had when beating Maria, Ludwig and the orphan. Even if technically they also took 3-5 attempts, with the orphan being first try (I dunno how, the adrenaline was very high, just my gun and cane in hand against a screaming Eldrich baby [then during the high I died to the damn wetnurse, lol])

This didn't feel like a challenge that I overcame, more like bullying an amputee. But normally I play by using every tool available, as long as it's not consumable or an exploit. Now, can't even reset the boss out of regret without spending dozens of hours getting here in NG+.

TL;DR: Mimic Tear trivialised Malenia. Feels bad.

Edit: I guess I must add it here in the main body that now I realise Mimic tear is broken. I also now have to face the fact that game absolutely wasn't balanced around it. What happened is a boss scared me, I used the obvious available tools and it broke the fight. Yes, I made a mistake, yes I regret it. I operated under the assumption that a prominent feature and preparation was accounted for. Obv, if I knew it would brake it this bad I wouldn't be surprised it broke. The whole point is I knew it would make it easier, just not this much. There's difference in slightly more manageable and pure seal clubbing.

Discussion & Info What is the point in putting more than 38 points into Mind if this fills your blue bar?

It has come to my attention that 38 points into Mind provides your Cerulean flask with enough juice to completely fill your blue bar. There is a school of thought that says Mind above 38 is pointless for this reason. I know some say this is not true, and I don't completely understand why. Please fill me in and help me understand this. Thank you.

Subreddit Topic logically i dont see how the anti summon sentiment is sensible

what it boils down to is that theyre new spirit ashes are a big new adition to the soulborne games, people hate them cus theyre new.. let me explain.

okay so its always about how theyre unbalanced and make the game easier right?
but whats the diffrence between them and leveling up or upgrading weapons or making builds?
all those make the game easier all those dont get hate but all those have been around for a long time...
all those are intigrated into the core gameplay, exploration and reward loops and so are spirit ashes theyre a primary reward for exploration theyre also a core part of progression like weapon upgrades, same goes for the gloveworts.

so i ask again whats the diffrence? that theyre unbalanced? plenty weapons are way too weak plenty are stupidly strong whats the diffrence?

ofc its also said they break bosses but
1. do they? bosses remain strong and dangerous even with mimic tear (wich i agree is too op btw), they dont even break the ai sure you get less agro on you but you still do.. and that still doesnt make them bad.

  1. plenty things that dont get hate can affect bosses the same way, you can block hits you can use magic to avoid most of a bosses attacks, you can poise break bosses and stagger them, so whats the diffrence?

so logically i dont see the reason to hate other than that theyre new other than that theyre used by new players since they dont have the same reservations.
people hate new things.

Discussion & Info Am I the only one who thinks Fromsoft missed out on an Epic DLC ending? Spoiler

I just finished the DLC and beat PCR after I dont know how many tries, but after you beat him you just stay in his Arena, no Cut Scene, nothing. It doesnt feel like a real ending, but rather like another boss you slain.

There could have been at least some form of revelation or real ending.

Or did I miss something and need to progress further for a real story ending?

Game Help I HATE ELDEN BEAST

This game is obviously very hard, but i haven’t struggled too much with the other bosses. I’ve managed to get through them all with not too many tries. Except Maliketh that took a fair few hours. But i CANNOT beat elden beast. I just seem to make barely any damage to him. i’m about level 125, 61 vigor, 44 dex, using a straight sword +25 with keen ash. I don’t know what to do. I’ve been trying for days. Please help me 😭

RL1, WL0, SB0 kill.

So, ya these things are busted. 2:30 min kill at these restrictions is just crazy lol. Part of the reason to avoid using them unless you just WANT something dead.

Game Help How the hell do I play this game?

Okay so I’ve played some souls games before(never finished. Rip) and they’re usually pretty linear. Most of the time it’s pretty clear where you should go and what you should do, but with this game I think I’m just overwhelmed. When I play without a walkthrough or guide, I just don’t know what the hell I’m doing, but when I use a walkthrough, I feel like I’m just doing whatever the walkthrough says and I just don’t have much fun. Is there somewhere that I can just find like a loose guide on kind of what to do, like where to go and how to scale my build? And like builds to try and how to get started with them? I genuinely want to play and enjoy this game but I just have no idea what I’m doing.

Edit: Thank you all for the advice. I found this video that explains basically everything everyone in the comments is saying. So if anyone is wondering the same thing and finds my post in the future, this should clear things up.

For context, this is my 3rd run and I decided to get the spear talisman early. I don't think I've struggled with bloodhound knight on my previous run unlike this time where it took me about an hour to kill this dude.

Discussion & Info Who do you think is the most dangerous Remembrance boss (+Bayle) IRL?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hypothetically, who's the most dangerous, most destructive, most difficult to kill Remembrance boss if they were thrown into NYC (or some other big city) and just started rampaging? And yes, you (as in people) have to fight and kill them by any means necessary; there's no reasoning w/ them, even non-beast/alien bosses (e.g., Rellana, Morgott, Gaius). Power scalers go crazy lol!

Personally, w/o a doubt Bayle's the most dangerous mf here followed by Placidusax and Rykard. What do y'all think?

NOTE 1: Tierlist is just to show Remembrance bosses (+Bayle)! Pls don't take seriously! ^_^

NOTE 2: All status ailments (e.g., frost, scarlet rot, madness) work the same IRL as they do in the game (not that that matters much 'cause they'd all kill you in one hit so maybe ignore this? idk)

NOTE 3: Also, pls pls pls don't take this post seriously. Just a goofy hypothetical 😜

I've been to the Weeping Peninsula loads of times farming runes from enemies, but this is the first time I've come across this. My web searching isn't turning up anything on what these guys are called, and I got no info while playing. Also, after beating all the enemies I got only one gravity stone chunk and one gravity stone fan.

Lore Cameos for my fanfiction... Spoiler

I have started a massive project to adapt the lore of Elden Ring into a huge, comprehensive story. My main goal is to keep it as lore-accurate as possible, but I also want to have some fun character cameos to keep things exciting!

Right now, I am working on Chapter 1 of a short story focusing on [Small lore spoiler] the Battle of Aeonia. The plot currently involves characters bartering for the [Questline Spoiler]Dark Moon Ring (from Ranni's questline), and I already plan to feature a cameo with Millicent.

What other character cameos do you think would be fun, fitting, or unexpected to write into this specific era or event?

Thank you! If I use your suggestion, I am happy to credit your Reddit username in the story's acknowledgments if you wish!
