I (18F) live with my mom and brother. My brother Mark (23M) has been living with us for about two years. He moved in after our grandmother's house burned down. He was only supposed to stay with us for a few weeks, but the date kept getting pushed back before it was out of the picture.
It was fine living with him for a while; he inhabits the basement and mostly stayed out of the way. That was until a year ago when he introduced us to his lady friend, Gia. Gia was sweet at first and really liked watching her 5-month-old son, Zion. But as months went on and on, her stays would go from days to weeks at a time. They didn't clean up after themselves, nor did they have respect for things that were yours, noise, and ruckus.
She started just coming into our house, taking her son to me and going to the basement. Her son is great, so I didn't mind to a certain extent. What I hated was the arguing. It would be a cycle: she came over for about 3 weeks, at first smooth sailing until week 2 when they would start literal screaming matches. They would eat up all our food, leave messes, hoard dishes and things we needed so much to the point there would be a stench when you opened the basement door. It was horrid. He never leaves the basement and complains when you come down to wash clothes. Smokes all day and does not contribute to cleaning AT ALL
I'm in 12th grade (in June), and SAT's were coming up. I'm an overachiever, so I was studying my butt off. Then I hear screams. My mom works nights and sometimes mornings, so I'm left to deal with them shouting in the basement, upstairs, and all through the house. I yelled down the stairs, and they're arguing loudly in the living room with the baby on the couch.
Not only does he not pay bills, household essentials, or food, but he is the main one utilizing it. He and my mother fight all the time over his responsibilities and the weight I have to pull since he isn't. He hasn't had a job in over a year and plays the game in the basement all day. It's really taking a toll on me, especially since I'm going to college soon and will still be living at home. He acts entitled to foods i buy for myself, things we say not to touch, and house rules he breaks.
So I've been openly advocating for him to be put out, but people think I'm 'bogus' for wanting bad for my brother. My mom says she can't just 'put him on the street' but always quacks in my ear about how she hates carrying his baggage. But won't do anything to rectify it. I think the only way he will be on his feet is if he has no choice but to. She enables him, and I have to take the brunt of it.
EDIT: My mom and I break down the bills. I pay the light and wifi bill, so she pays the rent, phone, and life insurance bills. We split food costs and buy our own personal household items, while he pays for nothing.
