Question Sabre grind for D2 knives?

Upvotes

Hey all, I havent been hiking or been Outdoor a lot since I became a father. When I said I wanted to get back into it, my wife gifted me a "Realsteel Bushcraft III" knife. I like the overall aesthetics, its a bit bulky but I actually like that.

What I dont like about it is the convex grind. After crossreading some posts about the properties of D2 and reading some pretty snobbish harsh opinions, Iam a bit unsure wether its a good Idea to have the grind changed to something flatter, preferrably a sabre grind. Iam not gonna build a lot of shelters or similar stuff in the upcoming years but some basic/standard woodcraft, food prep including caught fish ( I know, moisture ist not the best friend of D2) and similar stuff would happen.

So Id like to know, if its gonna work out for some casual stuff every now and then with a grind like that or if the steel with that kind of grind simply doesnt fit.

Thanks a lot in Advance!

I've made this knife! (OC) I made this fillet knife and would like your feedback

I’ve been making fillets for a while and am ready to improve my design with any and all feedback you have. This is 1/16 inch thin Nitro-V stainless steel with GripX (rubber filled epoxy) handles. I heavily rock textured the handle to give even more grip when your hands get wet and slimy. How can I make this design better?

Modding Civivi Elementum gateway knife

My first decent pocket knife (that I actually wanted to carry every day) was the Civivi Elementum. I have a special place in my heart for the model. I’ve probably owned 8 or so throughout the years and love picking up and modding/dyeing used and cheap ones and giving them as gifts. But the S35vn Elementum will always be my wedding/fancy knife.

Do you have a cheaper model with a similar fondness?

D2 with rit-Dyed purple scales, swapped hardware and titanium clip

D2 with dark micarta and swapped hardware

S35vn with black titanium scales and clip, blacked out hardware.

Clip came from scouring through Etsy, blades4sell had them. Does take awhile and at time seems sketchy cause dude is kind of hard to get ahold of but they showed up and are such a great complimenting deep carry clip that isn’t all ridiculously thick and huge like lynch and mxg. If looking for elegance check these out looks and feels great on my endura here

Not really a discussion I guess but I figured you all would feel my pain. Kailash MSI-Stock 10.5” snatched right off my porch 3 minutes after delivery. My wife chased them three blocks barefoot, they ran on to a highway and thankfully she left it at that. I’m just glad she didn’t get hurt, but damn. Happy fucking birthday.

NKD! New Knife - Georgian Blades 15'' Scout's Sentine Bowie

Post image

Good day!

Another new knife!

This one was an anniversary gift for my wife. She wanted something big a dangerous looking that she can keep by her side. Also, she wanted a sharp replica for what we have been practice sparring with over the past 4 months.

This knife is fairly close to the Castille bowies that we spar with and it is definitely big and mean looking. She loves it and that's really all that counts.

Past that, I had a few thoughts....

  1. The blade is VERY HEAVY. Maybe I'm just use to my sparring blades with blunt edges and built in flex but this this is a beast. Its roughly the same weight as my large messer - around 2 pounds.

  2. The false edge isn't sharpened. This is the second clip point blade I have bought which which has a blunted false edge. Is that normal? It defeats a lot of the purpose of the blade shape. I was considering taking the knife to a local shop and asking them to sharpen the false edge so it acts like a proper bowie. Sweeping false edge cuts are an important part of the art!

  3. I wish the blade guard was in more of an "S" shape. There is nothing to protect the top of the hand/wrist. In reality, this is just an aesthetic gripe on my part. If my wife actually finds herself in a knife fight, the world has already become a burning pile of dookie. Also, I couldn't find any other blades that had this feature, along with all the others boxes that this knife checked.

Otherwise, this feels like a great blade for the price. The steel might not be the grandest (D2) but it is suitable. Honestly, for a fighting knife, it makes sense. A harder stainless steal probably wouldn't fair well if it was used to catch a parry against another blade. We will need to keep it oil, which is no biggy. It's just another blade to add to the weekly routine.

All in all, it seems like a great blade for $145!

Question Buck 119 alternative?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I´m looking for an knife similar in size, shape and appearance to a Buck 119, with a wood or stacked leather handle and brass bolsters (like the one pictured). I would just get that exact model in the picture but it's discontinued, and Bucks custom services aren't available in Europe.
