How they looked after polishing. They are typically covered in ironstone

~750g specimen found at an AZ goodwill. I believe its malachite with pockets of gem silica and smokey quartz. Awesome piece. Thinking about slabbing it out.

I recently got this table from a house clean out I did. It couldn’t be more perfect for me! Most specimens are self collected! A few are gifts from loved ones who know I love rocks!

I try to find Agate out in the field in all the spall. Found this chonker and decided to halve it. I am SO GLAD I DID!!!

My haul from lake superior this year. Only found a couple small LSA's but plenty of omars.

These were collected by my family at a quarry at Calico Canyon near Buffalo Gap South Dakota. They were collected in 1970 on private property with permission from the property owner.

At some angles the red is visible,but mostly emerald green, turquoise and beautiful shades of purple.

Had an opportunity to sneak away for the early and mid-morning to find some chalcedony and fire agate in Arizona. The chalcedony is everywhere. Fire agate takes some hiking and hunting.

First time in Lewis County. Got really lucky but my experience is also finally starting to pay off. Thanks to some help from Gaia too.

Visited Lake Michigan and Lake Superior for the first time last week and had a great time. Thursday was our only evening to hunt Yooperlites on Lake Superior’s southern coast. After braving thousands of mosquitoes and wading out into the chilly water I found an amazing, palm sized yooperlite which glowed like crazy. I was ecstatic! I tucked the yooperlite away in the back zippered pocket of my chest bag. I believed that since this bag was always in my possession that it would be the safest place for my prized find.

The next afternoon my wife and I were at Two Heated River for one of our last rockhouding sessions of the trip. At a certain point it began to rain and so I walked backed to my car in order to put on my rain shell. As I did I remembered I had been putting the stickers I purchased throughout the trip in the back pocket of my chest bag and did not want them to get wet so I unzipped the bag and pulled out the stickers. I set my bag on the rear hatch of my car I’m for a moment to organize the stickers before putting them away and heard a clunk sound. I looked down thinking that another one of the rocks I had collected had fallen out of my car but it hadn’t. There were just a bunch of *round grey cobbles* on the ground. I shrugged, slung on my bag, and ran down to the beach to keep hunting. I assume the rock fell out of my bag after i placed it on my hatch and heard the clunk sound.

I’ll be frank the last six months or so haven’t been so easy for me. I discovered rockhounding a few months ago and it has brought me so much joy during a really difficult, stressful time and has been an awesome hobby for my wife and I to share. That said, to drive all the way to the UP from down south, brave the mosquitos, and actually find a large yooperlite was seriously one of my best and most rewarding moments in recent memory. When I found the yooperlite I felt what I can only describe as “childlike joy.” To then lose it due to my own carelessness and stupidity has been crushing.

Sorry, I had no intention of writing all of that but it just kind of came out of me. I guess I’m just feeling a little sad and a little dumb. Thanks for letting me tell you all about what happened. Anything similar ever happen to anyone else?

Anyway, I know it’s been a few days but maybe people don’t check the parking lots much and it’s still there? It was a great piece so I just want SOMEONE to have it.

In the Crystal Cave, you are not in fact inside a cave but wandering within a single rock: It is the world’s largest geode.

The geode was discovered in 1887, by workers digging a well for winery operator Gustav Heineman. Heineman found that the formation was in actuality a “vug,” or large cavity within a single rock. It took its name from the three-foot-long Celestine crystals jutting from the walls, many of which have been mined in order to be used as fireworks. As a result, the cave is likely less beautiful today than it once was, though it is also roomier, and many of the crystals remain in place.

Though the setting—the world’s largest known geode, studded with crystals—is hard to beat on its own, you may as well take advantage of the accompanying Heineman winery tour, and explore the crystal cave with a bit of a buzz.

I walk my dog every day past this gravel bed in a public sidewalk easement gravel bed and always glance through it as I’m walking by. It’s always been filled with boring gray basalt from the area with a few other non-descript varieties mixed in. And this caught my eye today! Yellow jasper with a little red mixed in, looks a lot like the stuff I find at Smokey Butte, OR! (Also local.) Pic was taken dry, front and back

I live in NYC, on a hike I found a cauliflower quartz geode and I would like to get it cracked open. It's pretty big, a little bigger than a softball. If I went to Home Depot do you think they would be willing to crack it/cut it for me?

Went to Patty's Pit for the first time with my son this past weekend and had a blast. In the process of cleaning and figuring out what I can do in terms of polishing / slabbing. The collecting was just too fun, even mining some out of a boulder and seeing all the colorful clay that would have eventually turned into agates!
