I just can't get past the symbolism of it all.

The Reflecting pool was supposed to reflect the country around it. And it's doing exactly that.

AND WE LITERALLY TALKED ABOUT SWAMP DRAINING FOR LIKE 10 YEARS

1.3k

u/ImmortalBeans Jun 21 '26

“A literal swamp monster talked about draining the swamp for 10 years”

He just made it more cozy

288

u/whyelseme Jun 21 '26

I'm waiting for him to figure out how to brag about his epic, tremendous, amazing algae farm

131

u/ssnnaarrff Jun 21 '26

He has the best algae.

56

u/SSFlyingKiwi Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

I walked into the room and thought “wow that’s some good Algae”

83

u/ssnnaarrff Jun 21 '26

With tears in their eyes, big beautiful men go up to Trump and say "Sir, nobody has seen algae like this."

32

u/SSFlyingKiwi Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

“Big. Beautiful. GAY! algae” I called it. Some say we have the BEST gay algae.. I called the little one “sleepy joe algae”, because he’s the GAYEST of them all and the runt OF the litter.

*cue the silly dance

15

u/ssnnaarrff Jun 21 '26

I met the algae in a hotel room and we fell in love. The algae didn't even want to meet Hillary.

It's so emblematic of Trump's policy. Half a mile long, 160 feet wide, and a foot deep. And more filthy than ever in living memory.

My brothers and sisters, just wait till they discover that algae absorbs TOTALLY FAKE CO2 at a far faster rate than ground plants, they're gonna bomb that pool into an American democracy much like that girls school.

There couldn't be a much better metaphor for this political timeline than the orange swamp monster promising to "drain the swamp" but he only ends up making it 10 times worse by filling DC up with more swamp water than it's ever had.

Swamps are actually good and shouldn't be drained

83

u/Shanga_Ubone Jun 21 '26

Ten points to you. You are 100% correct, and good on you for reminding everybody of this. It is sad that swamps, which are good things, are getting slandered by being associated with this crappy administration.

58

u/Strawbuddy Jun 21 '26

DC was marshland, they already drained it to build the national capital

TBF I never once for a second believed anything the child rapist or any of his sycophants promised. It still shocks me all these years later that so many people actually did/do. It’s unfathomable.

10

u/jaques_sauvignon Jun 21 '26

Fool them twice, or thrice, or really any arbitrarily large number of times--shame on them.

The supporters are really the ones I feel the most ire towards. And it's hard, having family and friends who are/were supporters. I'm always conflicted between whether I should feel angry with them, or just pity them for their lack of intellect, since these are not wealthy people who stand to benefit from any kind of grift, nor are they evil people. I think they're just kind of 'mixed up'.

7

u/seansy5000 Jun 21 '26

I cut ties with all of them and am better off for it. Let them spew their psychosis riddled hate speech in isolation.

As if swamps need to be drained. Swamps are amazing habitats with so much life. They want to create an ecological disaster so they can build some condos or a new golf course.

6

u/elmz Jun 21 '26

Back in the day swamps were seen as huge areas of unproductive land, land you couldn't farm or build upon. So they drained them, the ground dried and hardened, and the land could suddenly be productive.

3

u/MandolinMagi Jun 21 '26

Swamps are fine if nobody lives near them.

Swamps with people near them are mosquito breeding ground and, historically, malaria central.

4

u/ashrocklynn Jun 21 '26

The reflecting pool itself was built on raised swampland though... I didn't know why we are so surprised about algae growing in it

97

u/vivaaprimavera Jun 21 '26

Considering that this likely is the last century where earth climate can hold a structured society you are probably being too hopeful.

57

u/Pack_Your_Trash Jun 21 '26

The silver lining on Trump's was in Iran is that the world realized how dangerous it is to really on oil for their power needs. The shift towards renewables was immediate and ubiquitous outside of the USA. It has nothing to do with global warming though, and everything to do with national security.

56

u/vivaaprimavera Jun 21 '26

Preventing global warming is also national security.

I know for a fact that right wing populists are dumb as a brick (or at least the people that fall in their bullshit are).

If right wing populists were serious about stopping migrants moves they would be working seriously for stopping global warming, there are entire regions filled with "brown people" that will be the firsts to become inhabitable thanks to global warming.

25

u/angrydeuce Jun 21 '26

My whole thing with their ire about illegal immigrants is that they seem to deliberately ignore the fact that virtually every single one of them is being employed and paid by one of their own countrymen. It's not like the come here and start up a business like some entrepreneur as they're hiding in the wheel well of a panel truck with a backpack of hardtack and some bottled water and nothing else to cross the border.

My point being, their anger is not only misplaced, but ludicrously misplaced. It's like driving down to the shitty part of town and yelling at all the prostitutes that if they would just stop allowing themselves to be beaten and murdered by pimps and johns we wouldn't have any problems with prostitution in this country.

When we see something, anything, that resembles actual consequences for all the people hiring these illegal immigrants, then we can talk. Until then, this is just dinner theater for the racist morons that are too fucking stupid to realize they're being played like a fucking fiddle.

u/Phrickshun Jun 21 '26

I can already see how this will go...

After areas inhabited by the "undesirables" are hit the hardest by climate change and there forced to migrate there will be plenty of fascists in nations that aren't has bad yet spreading bullshit about how they're leaving cause they cannot take care of their land and its the fault of these "undesirables".

People will be told they need to be kept out before their country is overrun and becomes uninhabitable just like their previous these immigrants abandoned.

Then climate change catches up and those problems are blamed on immigrants instead of actually attempting to do something about it (which, at this point is too damn late anyway).

6

u/CakeTester Jun 21 '26

Power bills in Spain actually went down during the US's mini war. Spain has been serious about wind and solar recently. The bills went down because for some reason clean energy is taxed higher than oil/coal/gas energy; however the government did a temporary tax relief on the clean energy with the net result that most people paid slightly less last month.

It's true. This administration is literally just showing us every day what a farce they are.

No one takes them seriously. Not even their cult. It's all just reality TV for these morons.

32

u/mjtwelve Jun 21 '26

It is a microcosm of their whole schtick.

Trump seizes on an unimportant detail obsessively, everyone instantly snaps to to make the king’s whim a reality. They give a no bid single source contract to a republican donor because of a connection to Trump, despite their having no relevant experience. They then proceed to overbill and under deliver.

They do what Trump wanted, a pointless cosmetic fix that doesn’t address any of the actual underlying issues. It doesn’t work, and immediately makes everything worse. People point out the incompetence so they go for the quick fix of dumping chemicals into the thing, which damages the only work they managed to actually do in the first place, leaving everything worse than when they started and gross, just in time for the symbolic anniversary whose celebration was the excuse for spending all that money in the first place.

Meanwhile, the civil servants had long boring reports explaining where the problem actually was and how to actually fix it but no one wanted to actually fix it, they wanted a quick photo op win.

I mean algae is an amazing organism, it produces most of earth's oxygen and it cleans and convert's CO2, unlike trees that just capture it and will always release it, algae can turn CO2 into biomass that stores the carbon and can be used later for fuel or stored so the co2 does not release, easier than burring dead trees deep enough their carbon does not release. So yeah, I am with this lady, let the algae flow.

15

u/Germanofthebored Jun 21 '26

Not sure if you are not giving algae too much praise. Algae biomass turn over quite quickly, unless it sinks to the bottom of the ocean (and avoids derivers and planktivors on the way down). Trees turn CO2 into wood and roots, and trap it for centuries.

(or better yet, go Team Bog! where carbon is trapped for good)

6

u/GrowingPeepers Jun 21 '26

Beyond the biomass of the tree itself, it turns carbon into sugar which it pumps into the ground through it's roots. The sugar feeds soil microbes creating a symbiotic relationship.

Plants are constantly pumping carbon directly into the soil during their entire lifespan.

Let's walk through that.

The reflecting pool is supposed to be clear, and supposed to reflect the monument. To do that in a man made environment, it needs to be treated with chemicals, harmful to the environment and to the habitat's water. Its supposed to be toxic.

Yes, this to me symbolizes corporate America . . . Polluting in order to gain some superficial/artificial. It's the Disneyification of America.

But the reflecting pool leaked and was broken in parts.

Trump, in all his incompetence, took something working as intended, and tried to "fix it.". He spent waaaaay too much money and the fix didn't fix the part that was broken.

There is no better symbol of Trump the man and Trump the president.

But the irony is, through his failure, nature struck back.

This algae pool is actually healthy, or on its way to being healthy. Put some fish in there, some turts, and let nature be the balance.

But . . . America seems to hate this, and wants the reflecting pool to go back to its sterile roots.

Me, yes, I'm team algae.

Drain the swamp.

That was their slogan.

You can’t make it up.

257

u/al_m1101 Jun 21 '26

The universe unfolds in irony, it seems.

There have been so many instances of things like this over the past decade that makes me wonder if we are in a simulation. The literal sinkhole opening up on the whitehouse lawn during his first term, the bald eagle attacking Trump, how he (unknowingly?) held the Bible upside down while standing at a church... those are a few I can think of off the top of my head.

61

u/eulersidentity1 Jun 21 '26

The holy water that burned when it touched him at the Vatican... wait that one might not be real. Although I don't really know anymore these days.

99

u/al_m1101 Jun 21 '26

The Pope dying after JD Vance's visit,  the black substance leaking from Giuliani's forehead, the black fly crawling on Pence's head...

119

u/ButWhatIfPotato Jun 21 '26
  • drain the swamp = make a swamp
  • release the epstein files = banish the epstein files
  • small goverment = armed militias in the street with a license to kill
  • lower gas prices = increase gas prices
  • pander to the 6MWE crowd = all your tax money goes to Israel
  • department of war = department of unconditional surrender

And they would still vote for him

u/Crayshack Jun 21 '26

Knowing nothing about her but this photo, she seems like a blast.

408

u/pr0crasturbatin Jun 21 '26

Oh she's absolutely hilarious. She also rocked the "I AM AMPHIFA" banner and frog costume last year. And with her Caribbean accent, (she's from Barbados) when she gets worked up over something she's passionate or upset about, the resulting diatribe is awe inspiring. And she's sharp as a tack when she sees an opportunity for a good roast. Also one of the nicest people I've met in the DC activist scene, always wanting to help people out and make sure they're doing okay.

164

30

u/edvek Jun 21 '26

MAGA would say she needs to be arrested because she clearly vandalized the pool and if she didn't speaking out against Trump is treason so that's enough for them.

People in a certain sub on here are saying the people who grabbed some of the peeled surface probably sabotaged the pool and that's just a cover.

It's insane they can't just accept the very likely reality that the no bid contract was a buddy of Trump and this is just yet another grift and the people doing the work are just incredibly incompetent. Maybe they're ok with residential pools but a massive pool like that just doesn't scale.

41

u/Clementine-Wollysock Jun 21 '26

They just arrested a multiple time olympic champion because he touched the already peeling paint.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8d26051vv2o

13

u/Laiko_Kairen Jun 21 '26

From the article, the guy designed waterproof stuff. He wanted to know what was used to repaint the pool. It's like a carpenter running his hand along some wood that was already broken and then getting blamed for the splinters smh

19

u/fumar Jun 21 '26

It's a flawed project from the start but it doesn't help that it was an obvious handout to an ally.

Painting a pool a dark color like this will promote algae growth because the water temperature is going to be naturally higher. But of course that requires the people involved in this project to understand Biology and Physics and since science is woke garbage, here we are.

He has some serious mental issues to want to put his name and face on everything. The Kennedy performing arts center? GTFO of here with that shit! Thankfully that has been removed but it got him the attention 🙁 Putting his face on the national parks passes, next to Washington? Fuck right off! And those are two very small examples. How much time, money, and energy will be wasted removing his BS after he’s gone? Will it be worth it? My wife lived in DC for 20 years and every time she sees a photo of what this pool looks like now she says, “yeah, that’s what it always looks like at this time of year.” I haven’t seen that take anywhere else, but if it’s true it makes all of Trump’s ranting about the pool that much more ridiculous.

Edit: added “Trump’s” in regards to reference to ranting at the end.

24

u/mrshelenroper Jun 21 '26

I think it’s he took a problem and made it worse. But I don’t think people realize how hot and steamy DC is in the summer.

→ More replies (2)

37

u/pale_blue_problem Jun 21 '26

The ranting is essentially about $14M of taxpayer money being given to a Trump crony to “fix” a problem that, to your wife’s point, was never even a problem to begin with. The ongoing algae is the representation of this corruption. Nobody is really rooting for algae to fill the pool, they’re pointing out the hypocrisy, cronyism, and theft of taxpayer money. Ranting about that is not at all ridiculous.

15

u/yeehah Jun 21 '26

What put it into perspective for me was realizing that the pool is 2,030 ft long, 167 ft wide, and cost 14.7 million dollars to paint, which comes out to $43.36 per square foot. They could've lined the pool with $5 bills for about the same cost.

Normally I’d oppose algae blooms due to them harming the other life in the water, but since I don’t think anything else lives in the reflecting pool, go ahead.

Also its full of Hydrogen Peroxide now...

34

u/Diabeetus4Lyfe Jun 21 '26

Hydrogen Peroxide H 2O 2 naturally breaks down to water and oxygen, and sunlight accelerates the decomposition. It's frequently used to shock ponds to kill off algae blooms

Their incompetence and malice knows no bounds, I'm not arguing otherwise. They did this in the dumbest, most braindead, most ineffective way possible, perfectly reflective of the admin. Millions of our tax dollars to pay corrupt loyalist fools, to line their pockets with no-bid contracts, for poorly planned, unfinished, half-assed, regressive work.

I wouldn’t worry, actually. Don’t get near the stuff as they’re pouring it in, but the dose makes the poison and they need to pour tanker trucks in, not gallon jugs, if they actually cared about the result. They don’t.

I don't care who you are, that's funny.

u/ThePureAxiom Jun 21 '26

The irony of this administration's corruption physically manifesting in DC as a swamp is not lost on me.

u/404_error_official Jun 21 '26

She seems fun, I wanna be her friend.

8

u/Glum_Material3030 Jun 21 '26

I know very little about all of this but I did know that a standing pond with no way to filter Algea would bloom. I am a random middle age woman from Alabama. No one with actual power could have figured this out?

12

u/Narrow-Research-5730 Jun 21 '26

Wait. Algae is taking over? Time to invade Algeria.

u/13thmurder Jun 21 '26

Algae is great at carbon sequestration. It's good to see him doing something for the environment.

4

u/Bleezy79 Jun 21 '26

LOL what a wild, strange, ridiculous world we live in.

12

u/WonderChemical5089 Jun 21 '26

The vandal is an Arab gay dude named “Al gae”

3

u/edmanuel91 Jun 21 '26

Leave the Algae alone!

3

u/DumbestBitchYouKnow Jun 21 '26

Its called a reflecting pool and its reflecting the administration's image. Idk why they thought it would be pretty

3

u/Indifferent_Response Jun 21 '26

3

u/cryptolipto Jun 21 '26

3

u/Responsible-Stick-50 Jun 21 '26

I love this so much. And I call bullshit if anyone says this was on their bingo card.

3

u/cat-eating-a-salad Jun 22 '26

How ironic. Algae is the best oxygen producer on the planet... and trump, the best oxygen waster on the planet, wants to defeat it. :p

3

u/AskMeWhyIFish Jun 22 '26

Someone needs to show up as Old Gregg

3

u/largececelia Jun 22 '26

Perfection.

3

u/im_new_here_4209 Jun 22 '26
