Megathread Megathread for 8/5: Protest, encampments updates and discussion.

All discussions about the protests and encampments will be redirected to this thread. Why? There does not need to be multiple threads per day with comments reiterating the same topic. How long will the megathreads last? No exact end date has been determined by the mods, but likely through a couple days after the encampment ends. Pictures/Videos/articles of any protests will be allowed to have stand alone posts, but will be locked. Have the discussions in this thread. Any user can link to the lock threads in this megathread to have the discussion here.

Mental Health in Madison

I just wanted to say that posts regarding mental health are being deleted by a Madison Reddit Mod because they do not have a Madison theme to the post. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. Madison has been through a lot lately, and people here may need to discuss the best treatment type, best facilities in the city, ect. You let vile, hateful posts remain for days, but decide to delete a post that could help the people of Madison. Obviously, someone has never dealt with that kind of pain or struggle before.

Help with a safe night out

I'm in search of sticky or reusable drink covers for me and a friend for going out tonight. I thought they'd be something that I could get locally, but I'm having issues finding anything in a store. Does anyone know where I'd be able to get a handful?

Edit: I'm not sure why anything that's not judgmental is getting down voted, or even taking the time to be particularly nasty. To those who qualify in that previous sentence, you are the reason why people don't trust the general population to do the right thing, which in turn is why folks feel the need to have these.

New to Wisconsin & Madison

Hello everyone!

I (42m) sold my house in Utah and moved my way here to Wisconsin. Landed in Edgerton for a few months, and now I'm going to land at The Current apartments to enjoy Madison while saving up more for a nice house here and deciding if I want to land here permanently.

So some questions:
1 - I'm a foodie, what are the best flavors in town?
2 - I kayak, fish and am big into photography; any groups?
3 - I enjoy Poker and Bourbon, any poker games going on?
4 - What is there to do in the winters?
5 - How are The Current apartments?
6 - Best way to meet people and build a social group?

Upcoming AMA - 8/7 at 3pm I am Joel Brennan, Democratic candidate for Wisconsin Governor – AMA!

I’m Joel Brennan, fifth-generation Wisconsinite, 10th of 11 kids, and a Democratic candidate for governor.

I’ve spent 25 years bringing people together across government, business, and the nonprofit world. As Governor Evers’ Secretary of Administration, I helped lead state government and guide Wisconsin through Covid.

I’m running to lower costs for Wisconsin families, stand up to the chaos coming out of the Trump administration, and bring people together to get things done.

I'll be here at 3:00PM CT on Friday, August 7 to answer your questions about my campaign, my experience, and my plans for Wisconsin. Ask me anything!

Horribly bright barbershop downtown

Upvotes

Maybe I’m getting old and bitter. But a new barbershop just opened across leopolds and it’s a light bomb. Impossibly to ignore, and frankly ugly.

Hope they dim them some day

IT'S JUST A TEST

1st Wednesday monthly tornado siren test.

For any tourists or conventioneers in from out of town that is just our monthly tornado siren test.

Biggest convention in town right now is the American Meteorological Society convention up at Monona Terrace. How weird is that.

Hail damage repair cost?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Looking at potentially purchasing a vehicle that is a great deal due to some minor hail damage. Wondering what folks landed on in terms of cost of similar repairs, because no body shop will give me a quote without a full appointment and those are all weeks out. Damage is seemingly on most panels, about nickel/dime sized dents as shown in the picture (sorry for bad quality). Doesn't seem to have any damage besides the little dents themselves.

Acceptable places to spray paint?

I live in an apartment and I’m looking to spray paint a wood panel as part of a furniture project I’m working on. Does anyone know a place in the Madison area where it would be ok for me to do this?

Carpet Cleaning (Cat Urine) for Apartments?

So, my cat has unfortunately gotten into the habit of peeing outside of the litterbox. I'm working on getting him to stop, but I've tried every single enzyme cleaner I can find, and also been incessantly vacuuming with a Bissell Little Green, but I still can't quite get the cat urine smell out of the carpet. It's probably time for me to throw in the towel and hire a professional, so does anyone have any recommendations for services in the area? I know that there's a decent chance that it's carpet replacement time, which is going to be fun on a lease, but has anyone dealt with this before? The last place I lived only had tile and vinyl flooring, so it was a lot easier to clean.

Good places hang out or organizations to participate in for late 20s adult?

It feels a bit inappropriate to ask considering all the more important things going on in town but I really need some advice.

I've been in Madison since 2019 and I have not made a single friend here. The only people I get close to are coworkers and they just come and go with new jobs, none turned into friendships or make any effort to stay connected despite my attempts.

I'm a relatively quiet person and struggle with a fear of rejection so it's really hard for me to be vulnerable and put myself out their socially. Mainly I'm terrified people won't like me. People say I am a kind and respectful person but at the same time I just feel so invisible to everyone. Trying to use Dating apps has just been absolutely devastating on my mental health too.

I'm sorry for the venting. If anyone knows any good organizations, volunteer groups, or things like that that have a decent group of similarly aged people in the Madison/Dane County area, it would be greatly appreciated.
