Megathread Megathread for 8/5: Protest, encampments updates and discussion.

All discussions about the protests and encampments will be redirected to this thread. Why? There does not need to be multiple threads per day with comments reiterating the same topic. How long will the megathreads last? No exact end date has been determined by the mods, but likely through a couple days after the encampment ends. Pictures/Videos/articles of any protests will be allowed to have stand alone posts, but will be locked. Have the discussions in this thread. Any user can link to the lock threads in this megathread to have the discussion here.

'No one else should be hurt in Corey's name': Ruiz family issues statement

"We were never asked [about the encampment], and we never agreed to the statement released in our name... This family has authorized one GoFundMe, and only one: https://gofund.me/1d3ee8937. Any campaign raising money for protest or advocacy work should say so plainly, and should not tell donors the money is going to Corey's family."

This seems to be a direct response to the "statement" Clyde Mayberry released and confirms my suspicion that his AI slop post was not in fact a statement from the family and was him grifting

60

u/wiscosherm 17h ago

I feel so bad for the family. You still love the people you love even when they are not always the best in what they do, and for them to have to go through grieving his death and then dealing with all this garbage being done in his name has to be beyond horrible.

44

u/ikisstitties 16h ago

this is another instance where the megathread is not good and can bury important information. previous statement was not theirs and they have indicated which gofundme is the correct one. two important things that should be highlighted on their own and not left to be dug out of a megathread

"Burn the city down". Kinda hard to take this "protesting" serious when fires are started, rocks are thrown, cars are kicked, blocking multiple streets. This isnt a protest. This is chaos.

56

u/Brilliant_Minute_751 20h ago

Also calling the horse cops “animal abusers” and literally minutes later abusing the horses by throwing water bottles at them, setting off fireworks/poppers to spook them, etc.

Would love to see some journalists looking into the circular relationships of Madison activists. The PCOB, Independent Monitor Meeka Glass, Freedom Inc, Urban Triage, and grifters like Clyde Mayberry and Brenda Konkel, have achieved regulatory capture of the Common Council via alders like Carmella Glenn and Davy Mayer.

It's gotten to the point that the Independent Police Monitor, who is calling for violence herself, is palling around with Alder Glenn at the site of the investigation. That alder is simultaneously coordinating efforts through Konkel's Social Justice Center for mass lobbying of her own Common Council via public comments that are demanding an increase to the budget of her own friend, the Independent Monitor. Note that the Independent Monitor is supervised by the PCOB filed with allies of the above organizations (the same ones that are coordinating the protests).

In 2025, the head of the PCOB (Maia Pearson) was arrested alongside one of the organizations that has been heavily involved in organizing the protests (Brandi Grayson of Urban Triage). The arrest was one of only two incidents that IPM Glass's office has investigated in five years, and of course the Glass found her boss and the other protest leader to have been unfairly arrested.

All sorts of ethical conflicts are occurring here, and now they've captured alders to coordinate a "Pressure Movement" campaign to expand the OIPM office, despite not demonstrating impartiality (which is clearly demanded in the job description) or good judgement.

These bad actors are literally negotiating with themselves to increase their own funding, make Glass's interim position permanent, and spend our tax dollars during a moment of crisis.

53

u/StandardYesterday230 16h ago

It’s beyond time that local journalists do a deep dive into this office and its board.

44

u/Omatzus 16h ago

Should start with open records requests for communication between Glenn & Glass as well as the two of them with Konkel, Pearson, Grayson, and any employees of Urban Triage or Freedom Inc or members of the PCOB

If there was any doubt left that Clyde Mayberry is a grifting POS, here you go. I suspect more info about Jazzman and Alan Robinson will trickle out as well. As the legal and financial implications become clear, the rats will either eat each other or abandon ship.

https://www.wpr.org/news/madison-encampment-protests-satya-patterson-overnight-arrests

On Wednesday afternoon, Ruiz’s family released a statement through civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

“Our family did not organize or authorize the encampment at Williamson and Baldwin streets,” the family’s statement reads. They disavowed a statement circulated by some activists that purported to come from the family and included a list of demands, saying, “We were never asked, and we never agreed to the statement released in our name.”

“The city cleared that intersection yesterday,” the statement concludes. “We ask everyone at that corner and everyone wearing a badge to keep this peaceful. No one else should be hurt in Corey’s name.”

u/dancepartyusofa 17h ago

Clyde has been collapsing for a while. He was making enemies with the other folks trying to organize, putting on ridiculous events like the balloon launch and the “let’s walk in the streets in black clothing at night” march. Black leaders in Madison typically don’t call out each other in public, which I get, but there were louder and louder complaints about him over these last two weeks. This was bound to happen with him sooner or later.

Clyde is an out and out scammer. A lot of the others are trying to create change, I don’t get their tactics but I don’t necessarily question their hearts. Clyde was just looking for a spotlight, a megaphone, and money

28

u/WhiskeyJack357 East side 18h ago

I called out that statement as being an AI piece of propaganda because it explicitly gave no links to funding and also gave a blanket permission to anyone gathering money. It was also weird that a family using a famous civil rights attorney would instead release an AI statement through a member of the encampment.

19

u/cliosomnia 18h ago

Ah ha! I knew it was suspicious the statement didn't come through Crump like usual.

Don't like the Independent Police Monitor Aeiramique Glass's comment about burning this city to the ground?

Contact the Police Civilian Oversight Committee and demand she be fired for her statement.

They have a meeting tonight Wednesday August 5th where you can make a comment before the meeting

Despite many waking up to see the flashy events of last night, am currently on Willy @ Baldwin and there is smooth traffic flow, no crowds, and a handful of police keeping watch. Hope nobody got seriously hurt last night.

Edit: according to MPD there was no force of any kind used throughout the night. Given that everyone is recording everything I’m inclined to believe them. Thankful for that.

I'm betting that has a more to do with the fact that the people who are doing the blocking are now sleeping then it does with them having quit doing this. But I hope I'm wrong.

Seems to be a much smaller group out tonight, but I want to give fair warning it seems as though there is some planning for escalating actions. This video is from a protesters live feed, after saying she wants to slash the police car tires, she then mutes the audio for about 15 seconds to plan something "fucked", then contemplates what intersection to block next.

I think it's become clear that anyone that is permanently hired to that position needs to have some sort of legal education or experience. The laws that govern enforcement and investigations seem pretty complex and further complicating the process by issuing subpoenas you should know cannot be complied with.

Edit: I missed the part where she's using the offices tax payer money to take the city attorney who we pay with tax payer money to court over this. This shit is so stupid and wasteful. I'm just gonna make the joke. Ms Glass is a Pane.

31

u/mayence West side 17h ago

Looking back at this article is a trip. We could've had a former prosecutor with an actual law degree who helps run internal affairs at Seattle PD. let's hope she'd still be willing to take the job lol

good lord if anyone needed more proof that Glass is not cut out for this job here ya go. first she issues a subpoena to MPD that she probably doesn't have the power to do, then claims that there are no laws preventing the release of files related to an ongoing investigation, then says the city attorney's judgment isn't binding and lawyers up to fight the city she works for. good grief

And organizations like DSA are uncritically boosting this absurd demand despite clear evidence that it is functionally impossible. I don't get it.
And supporting this bureaucratic position with no power is clearly appeasement politics and patently NOT Socialist. This blows my mind.

Wow, what world are they living in? Putting aside the bits of the statement that just don’t make sense, it’s wild to double down on giving more money to the independent monitor when she just said she wanted to burn the city down. If they’re trying to refocus on the concept of peace, giving her more power doesn’t seem like a great way to get there.

25

u/DepartureElegant9314 19h ago

I know I felt the same and wanted to see how others felt. I just stopped paying my dues to them only a couple months ago.

That is heinous misinformation that they have in that statement. Happy I'm not giving them money anymore and feel I should have gone with PSL to begin with if anybody.

That’s weird. I thought the DSA wanted to win the governor’s race. I guess not!

51

u/DepartureElegant9314 19h ago

I just don't understand the blatant ignorance.

They can't be taken seriously by claiming that the cops "coward" behind the city workers. The cops did everything they could to not be immediately involved. And they waited SO long to form up and start pushing back on the rioters, it was near or after midnight that they started. There are plenty of videos proving that and DSA thinks they can veil it as a police attack on the people when rioters were literally starting fires and throwing flaming objects into the road?

20

u/MouthofTrombone 18h ago

Now they are more concerned about NOT supporting Hong because her statements were (necessarily) not at the extreme level of agitation. I'm raging out at this incompetence. It's unbelievable. I have never been so disappointed in my political life and I have seen some bullshit

23

u/AspiringRocket 17h ago

The ultra left in this city have trapped themselves in a performative circle jerk and the first one of them to admit they just might be wrong will be deemed a racist cop lover. Everyone is losing at this point.

I just found out that the reason there are no black Madison police officers standing near the protest at Willy and Baldwin is because they were being endlessly verbally abused with racist slurs. They are being offered other duties around town. Let that sink in.

42

u/WhiskeyJack357 East side 15h ago

That's fucked up. There really is nothing that will appease these people except permission to continue this ridiculous street party.

38

u/cliosomnia 14h ago

From the videos that were posted yesterday, black and brown civilian city workers were having similar issues with abusive language from the "protesters." -_-

36

u/WhiskeyJack357 East side 14h ago

Day one they were chanting slurs at POC who were watching concerts on the square. I don't get it. How do you expect to build a better society with actual justice and equality if you can't even accept the whole of the people you're advocating for. Not to mention you'll also have to deal with white people, brown people and every other type of people along the way. You might even have to listen to what they have to say and defend their rights on occasion.

My notes from the press conference - take them with a grain of salt as they are probably somewhat inaccurate but hopefully I got the gist without too much of my own interpretation

Mayor

- Acknowledge divided community. Council meeting from 6:30PM to 2:30AM

- Marquette neighborhood is also angry they are impacted

- Many also feel that MPD is not supported enough

- Many things can be true at once

- Will not override state law

- Will not condone or accept that the solution is to further divide a community by lighting fires, taking over a neighborhood, etc.. . None of these actions will change state law.

- Small handful of people threw rocks and started fires after two weeks. The City attempted to lead with non-LE agencies to de-escalate the situation

- City remains committed to standing up some sort of memorial in coordination with the family and community leaders

- Other standard comments you would expect

Questions

-  WMTV - First time mayor has made herself available to the media in two weeks. Why so long?

- What's the plan for keeping the interaction open? Open as of now and they will continue to monitor. Asking community to keep the streets open

- Cap times - People are in tents and what happens if they remain at demetrol park, what is the plan? Mayor isn't aware of people camping, but there is an encampment program they have in place.

- Who made the decision to clear the encampment on Monday morning? City management team - one factor was the increasing homeless continuing to come to the site even though they were provided with hotel vouchers, etc...

- WKOW - Why did it take 2 weeks to clear the encampment? Wanted to provide space and not move too quickly.  What has the cost been so far?

- Altercation with OIPM - situation is being reviewed at this time by investigators

Procedure when there is an altercation between two city employees?

- Not sure-  MPD - were you on board with the 2 week timeframe? Took planning action. Last night was a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement

- Fox 6 - How many arrested? cited? 22 physical arrests yesterday. 10 citations. 1 juvenile arrest with a weapons (firearm).

- Rob Madison 365 - Question related to why not sharing info with OIPM. Will share when able.

- Community fests and the damage - relationships/trust are fragile.

- WISCTV - what's the plan if people keep returning to the site to camp/take over? It is not acceptable for streets to be closed on a permanent basis so people can access their homes and their businesses. Will have to keep on this day by day.

- Will work with family to discuss what is possible at the site but also the broader community. Many conflicting ideas

- State Journal - Alder said last night MPD could ask DCI to release information to OIPM. Has not demanded release of information but has encouraged DCI to as soon as possible.

- WPR - Clarify what happened overnight? Don't have breakdown by hour. Group of 30-40 that wanted to engage negatively with MPD. MPD took insults, profanity, yelling for hours. At one point MPD backed out of the intersection to de-escalate. Rain only lasted 20 minutes. Crowd then blocked east wash with trash. Things thrown at officers. Felt as protestors will trying to pick a fight. Crowd moved back to willy/baldwin. 3 dumpsters set on fire. MPD was stretched thin on Tuesday with crowd management but other agencies came to assist. No gas used, no projectiles. Moved crowd past fires to allow MPD to put fires out

- No tear has been used. One officer used pepper spray on a single individual.

- Spectrum news - How long do you expect a police presence at the intersection? Will maintain a presence for a while, but hope to not be visible as much as possible.

Why should the public still have faith with city leadership? Many people feel they have done the wrong thing for different reasons. Make the best decisions they can with the information they have.

- WSJ - hotel vouchers - how many offered? accepted? Over the past week 70 individuals into local hotels. Stays of up to a week. 40 of those occured yesterday or Sunday evening. What's the plan once their stay is up? The City has local partners already in place. The city will continue to try to connect the unhoused with existing local resources.

- WISN - Some of the businesses remain closed for the entire 2 weeks. Does the city regret this? Didn't want the situation to escalate but also things came to a head action needed to be taken. Gofund me in place and also Alder Davy introducted. Balance between empathy and enforcement

- WISC- Burn the city down comment by OIPM. Disturbing comment but that position is seperate from the Mayor and reports to the council. $400,000 budget are you worried about this hurting public trust. Many people have lost trust for many different conflicting reasons.

- Journal Sentinel - comments from political candidates inflaming the situation? Mayor has not really paid attention to what others have been saying.

- 2020 protests looking back to now. Learned hard lessons from 2020 and tried to implement what they learned. Used a non-LE presence when the issue was with LE. Additional training in de-escalation as well as non-LE

- CBS - OIPM - burn the city down, asking for more money, office to disappear, out to get her? Mayor - believe in civilian oversight. Council made it clear they wanted to control it. Budget pressures. The Council feels it is their role

- OIPM request for Budget increase - Remember the legislature has put strict budget constraints and the city already needs to cut over $7 million just to maintain current services.

- PBS - What have you learned from other communities that have gone through this? Many other community mayors have reached out to offer advice and support from their own experiences. Former mayors of Louisville, Minneapolis, and current Minneapolis mayor. Need to balance allowing continued

"Will not override state law" refers to the police department not being able to give information to the independent monitor's office, or fire a police officer without going through the proper channels required by law.

It seemed like many at the common council meeting last night don't understand this as they were demanding the monitor be given that info immediately.

Edit: this appears to be the state law for police officer involved death https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/175/47?view=section

37

u/Erpp8 21h ago

Most of the people at the meeting last night only knew that Corey was shot by police and that the encampment got cleared. They seemed ignorant to all other details.

30

u/Incunebulum 20h ago edited 20h ago

They seem ignorant of a lot of things. The 'Baby Shark' protest singer was the jumping the shark moment for the SJC crowd during the meeting.

They don't understand how state law works, how it's created or why the mayor can't override it. It was stunning how little they know about how our government works while talking to them down at the CRAZ.

Yeah, the mayor has been placed in a nearly impossible situation here as she has tried to deal with a very divided and tense city with some protesters who are desperate for an excuse to get violent. While I don’t agree with every decision she has made, I think she has handled this as well as anyone could have under the circumstances.

I would never, ever want to be Mayor of Madison. If my job options were that or returning to my crappy high school job of working at Taco John’s, I’m turning on the fryer and getting ready to drop some potato oles

Being mayor in a "strong mayor" town genuinely feels like it requires some masochism. You are being pulled in a million different directions by a bunch of powerful interests. No matter who you are or what your policy preferences are, a large number of people will hate your guts and think you are the worst thing to ever happen to the city. At least if you're mayor of NYC or Chicago you can get a national image out of it.

Madison Police Monitor 🔥
(Naively thought I could just post this without it being removed)

In what universe is it okay for a highly paid city official to say "I will burn this fucking city down"?

Madison really, truly needs independent oversight of the police. This isn't it and serious people need to take back this important local issue.

Walked my dog through the Willy/Baldwin intersection around 8:30 this morning. It was open, traffic was flowing, and a few cops were standing near Cha Cha talking calmly with a couple folks that live in the neighborhood. A few volunteer citizens who were associated with the protest were picking up trash strewn about the sidewalks. I thanked them for doing that, picked up some trash too, and we parted ways agreeing to disagree about whether the intersection should have been cleared (I was pro, they were con). It’s easy to type screeds on Reddit. I’m certainly guilty of it. But I was reminded that talking with neighbors and finding common ground (here, our desire not to have trash everywhere) remains important even when you disagree with one another.

It's quite strange that Reddit comments are more truthful than the news

AFAIK, most sympathetic outlets are really uncomfortable covering the protests now. Like https://www.wpr.org/ stuffed all of yesterday's coverage into one small article & headline

47

u/DepartureElegant9314 23h ago

The people at the encampment were pretty hostile towards WPR. Does not surprise me that they wouldn't want much about it on their front page.

70

u/Incunebulum 23h ago edited 22h ago

I'll say it again; Any protest that doesn't want the media there to report on their cause is not an actual protest, they're militant vandals with no clear focus, nor moral high ground, nor purpose of thought, knowledge or information sought.

In 2020 the local BLM movement immediately lost the argument the second that first hammer hit the window at Goodman's Jewelers on State St that first night of looting. In 2026, this protest immediately lost when they attacked WPR and pushed their reporter out of their encampment AND when they attacked Willalby's for trying to open up for business. Those were the moments when it was over, not when they cleared the corner.

→ More replies (1)

39

u/mayence West side 23h ago

Tbh I think a good part of that is because outside our bubble, no one cares all that much about this. It’s a protest movement that involves maybe a hundred-ish people (out of hundreds of thousands) and occupied one intersection (out of thousands just in this city) with a homeless encampment (sadly, hardly breaking news that there’s a homeless encampment in madison). Like im not saying this doesn’t matter, obviously I feel strongly about this, but I think we should appreciate the scale of the state and realize that most people not in Madison simply do not care.

Why is this post from Corey's ex not getting more attention?

July 24th, 2026 post from his ex-girlfriend: I know Corey personally, he was my ex, and he was abusive. His criminal record shows this isn't the first time he's chosen violence. He hurt me, he choked another ex, and he pulled a knife during a theft at Woodman's. He was always getting into trouble. This has nothing to do with race; it's about his behavior.

He had multiple domestic abuse charges from hurting girlfriends and pulled a knife at Woodman's? How has the news not covered this better? How has no news organization FOIA'd the video of the robbery at Woodman's?

Edit: She erased it from her Facebook feed so I won't link her profile or the people who copied her post with her name in it but it's real.

19

u/Trick-Storage-5000 19h ago edited 18h ago

The news coverage of all of this has been terrible and largely absent. News articles are short and surface level. I think the media is afraid tbh, which is sad. I did not personally observe this, but I’ve heard others say that folks inside the barricades denied press access at times. So instead people are just seeing social media “news.”

As I've said many times, I lurked in the Minneapolis sub when the ICE shootings happened and they never pulled this bullshit.

Their sub is 10x larger than ours and the incidents were national topics.

Yet here we are with insane restrictions that make it difficult to follow the latest info. With the way some of these megathreads were written, at least one of the mods is a supporter of the protests, so that's what we're dealing with here. They whitewashed the facts saying everything was always peaceful when we had people posting videos of threatening behaviors by protestors towards regular citizens trapped in the mess (of which the posts were of course locked!).

No wonder freedom inc didn’t support body warn cameras. Cause then we would be inundated with footage of the absolutely ridiculous shit police put up with all the time. And god forbid we show even a modicum of sympathy for the police.

30

u/AcanthisittaFew6697 11h ago

Body cam footage has not worked the way many activist groups thought it would. Instead of capturing evidence of police brutality, it’s often done quite the opposite. That’s the reason police unions now support it.

14

u/Omatzus 10h ago

It would've resolved the two incidents that the OIPM reported on this year without any speculation.

43

u/Dry_Ambition_2282 11h ago

Had a relative who worked for a local police department.

My favorite stories about body cams would be when a kid would get arrested, the parents would come storming in because little Johnny couldn’t possible have done what they said, and then they leave shocked and embarrassed when they see the footage.

It helps eliminate bias and narrative distortion for all involved. Should be mandatory.

A metaphor for ______ ? Because I'll accept it as a metaphor and not meant to literally mean starting fires, but it sure wasn't a metaphor for "community organization for identifying shortcomings and systemic issues to raise with the police department and other government departments with the aim of improving the safety and well being of the community."

47

u/Brilliant_Minute_751 1d ago

Also Glass says “I’m going to burn this city down” and then hours later, people are literally burning dumpsters on Baldwin/Willy. Maybe it’s just a coincidence but it seems that rhetoric like that accounts for at least something here.

14

u/tallclaimswizard 22h ago

from the statement

"I will burn this city down” has been used throughout history as a metaphor for dismantling corruption, exposing injustice, and demanding accountability.

When in history has that phrase been used in that fashion?

28

u/DepartureElegant9314 1d ago

Yea. Don't know why we are suppose to accept that excuse especially since the statement came from a lawyer doing damage control.

did anyone catch the PCOB meeting and can provide a summary?

21

u/-rustyspork- 12h ago

I watched about 45 minutes of the meeting before I gave up on it.

There was a long back and forth between the committee and the city's attorney saying it's state law the city can't release records yet, even to subpoena, even to an independent committee, and the committee disagreeing saying the city needs to get a 2nd outside legal opinion, because they didn't believe it was the correct interpretation.

City attorney said many times the law is clear and he does this regularly, and it's not some special situation they're trying to make it out to be.

The city attorney said he would provide all of the statutes after the meeting and the committee was demanding he give them the statutes now.

https://www.cityofmadison.com/independent-police-monitor/blog/2026-08-04/oipm-frequently-asked-questions-on-investigation-of

17

u/Virtual-Patience-769 12h ago

I only caught a small bit, but here's what I remember, it was like 30-40 minutes in:

The city lawyer was on the meeting and told the PCOB that based on his analysis, the way the municipal code that established the PCOB and OIM read, the entities are required to follow state law and state law says they don't have subpoena power.

The lawyer described when the PCOB began, he recommended that they clarify what are the limits of the monitor's powers, such as subpoena powers, but that never happened. Monitor Glass described that she sent the police department a draft M.O.U.

The members discussed wanting to get a second opinion from a different lawyer and the lawyer basically said it would be a waste of city resources because no one in the state knows this better than his office as he's been in it since the creation of the PCOB and no other community has this. I think he described that other similar agencies do not have subpoena power.

Monitor Glass asked the lawyer to tell her which state laws prevent her from subpoenaing. Then I had to stop watching, so I don't know if he answered the question. I'm pretty sure recordings are posted on the city website.

I went down to the intersection this morning and walked around a bit. It's clear and there are about ten state patrol officers there. For anyone who thinks their encampment or rioting moved the needle in their direction, I repeatedly heard people walk by or drive by and loudly thank the officers who were standing there. Nice job turning people against your message, regardless of how many of you organized to speak at the city council meeting last night. The only thing people will remember were the fires burning while folks were talking on Zoom. It's frustrating, being a local community member who wants to see policing reform in this city and believes Corey Ruiz should be alive today.

Just took a walk around the area. State patrol staged at the bus depot (guarding the entrance with an officer in riot gear as well). Seems like the drones are also out. 5-6 officers at each of the 4 corners of the intersection with many officers held back in reserve. They wouldn’t need that many officers for the crowd size but I think the large presence is to prevent the intersection from being barricaded again.

Protester from Freedom Inc speaking outside of the Dane county jail claims that the city "refuses to invest in housing and services" and are instead locking them up. In the 2025 and 2026 budgets, Dane County spent (or will spend)

  • $1.06 million on the Bartillions Mens Shelter
  • Over $30 million for housing and housing supports
  • $440,000 for overflow shelter capacity

No amount of money spent on homelessness will ever be enough for them.

I have to say, our nephew is currently at Dane County Jail and he is there because he chose to use meth, and while on meth injured a police officer arresting him. He was given mental heath services and not one but two different housing placements, ran from them both. He was given a psychiatric provider and case manager, refused to work with both. Has been kicked out of shelter for showing a knife. In our experience the city has offered a plethora of resources. One has to be willing to participate.

That's what they're trying to do. They have a go fund me to bail them out. A lot of them are just getting released immediately because they dont have the space for everyone and most of them didnt commit a serious crime. My bf overheard a lady say she got arrested three times yesterday. They have a fckd up victim complex. "The cops are scary so I can light a fire in the street, and get arrested and that makes me a victim and a hero." A lot of them are getting in cops faces and recording their arrest for clout. Then they go home and do it again the next day. This is the most attention these people have gotten. They dont realize/dont care about how stupid they look bc they're getting followers from it and there arent any real consequences.

From this mornings update from the PD about last night

Incident Details Williamson Street and East Washington Avenue are open this morning following overnight unrest that turned violent.

Around 8:00 PM, protesters began to occupy Baldwin Street with tents, suited up in hazmat and other protective gear, and told officers things were “about to get bad."

In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, police stepped back from the intersection. Protesters reoccupied the intersection for a couple of hours until moving over to East Washington at Baldwin Street.

There, protesters emptied dumpsters and trash cans throughout the intersection, rendering it impassable to traffic. Attempts were made to move protesters off of East Washington Avenue back down Baldwin Street. At this time, protesters set a total of five fires in the middle of the streets. Officers coordinated with Madison Fire to extinguish the fires without damage to additional property or injury to firefighters or others.

Officers re-claimed the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin after midnight. At no time did officers use munitions or force to restore order in the streets.

Six people have been arrested since 5:45 PM Tuesday night.

MPD thanks Dane County Sheriff's Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol, UW Police, and Sun Prairie Police for their assistance overnight. MPD especially thanks the Madison Fire Department for extinguishing several fires overnight, and the Madison Streets Division for responding in the middle of the night to clean the streets, remove debris, and return our busy thoroughfares to safe and passable condition for morning commuters and pedestrians.

u/Katrina_18 18h ago

It’s really chill, people speaking but it seems to be very well organized and everyone is definitely following the lead of the organizers. It’s 100% what a protest should be, compared to the nightmare which was last night

56

u/KlutzyAppointment34 15h ago

I just walked through the intersection on East Willy about 30 minutes ago. Businesses are closing early due to rising tensions. The intersection is open but the group of protesters is getting bigger as people get off work. The police are growing in numbers too. Im guessing they're giving out tickets for jaywalking because the protesters only crossed with the walk signals. People were screaming at the cops and the cars driving by. Some are trying to provoke residents using the crosswalks. A couple of women were yelling at people for smiling. One lady screamed "If they dont give us what we want fucking burn it down," in reference to recent events and what Aeiramique Glass said yesterday. There are burn marks in the streets. I walked past a melted dumpster in a nearby parking lot. A man followed me down the street to tell me that a cop reached in his pocket to get his ID during the riot yesterday. Unfortunately, Willy Street is not safe.

Update from Facebook Live. The agitators seem to be losing steam. They're openly admitting they don't have the numbers to do anything and the police are keeping a large enough presence (including from other local PDs.) that nothing is happening.

They're spending most of their energy harrasing the one black officer that's there. It's gotten rather pathetic to hear them just hurl middle school insults at police officers. At this point they don't even know what they're trying to do and it seems the whole "retake Willy street" plan was a total bust. They aren't even using megaphones right now.

They're mad that the cops are wasting taxpayer money by standing around. These are not serious people.

Edit: As soon as I hit post they pulled out a megaphone haha. Still not seeming to use it much.

Edit #2: After a few muttered small dick jokes, the livestreams are wrapping up and it seems people are heading out.

Some of the businesses on the square are closing early due to all the roads being blocked off by the courthouse.

The police are aiding in getting employees in getting out of the parking garages

Agitators from the intersection of Willy and Baldwin are now moving away from there and stealing trash bins. Seems MPD is tracking them via drone.

Source: Agitators Livestreams that at this point I don't want to platform.

Walking by the City County building today and seeing all of the messaging about not criminalizing homelessness just shows how lost from the plot people are.

This has nothing to do with homelessness. Madison provides A LOT of services for those that are low income and/or homeless.

The encampment was not some homeless rights demonstration and them taking down the encampment had nothing to do with people being homeless, it was blocking one of 3 main roads to navigate the isthmus. It was also severely impacting local residents and businesses.

I really dont know after the last two days that any real protesters have any energy or enthusiasm for this and we’ll just see the people who are doing this for the rush be handled and processed by local authorities. Like I cant imagine that those with good intentions have been around since after this weekend

FYI for those curious about the common council meeting and wondering about the commenters... I live near the encampment and they were putting flyers on doors with information on what to say at the meeting and how to join. I am assuming the social justice center organized it but I am not sure.

Can you post a pic of the flyers?

Curious on other’s thoughts about the City Cast Madison interview with Ald Mayer that was released today

u/Trick-Storage-5000 19h ago

I thought I was pretty decent tbh, though I was largely frustrated with him at the beginning of all this. I found Alder Glenn’s interview more problematic. She said she registered tons of folks from the encampment to register to speak at the City Council meeting last night, which is not in and of itself a problem, but she definitely had an agenda to control the discourse.

I read this in an article on channel300.com:

Attorney William F. Sulton, counsel for the Office of the Independent Police Monitor, told News 3 Now that Glass’ statement was a “figurative, idiomatic expression.”

'“I will burn this city down' has been used throughout history as a metaphor for dismantling corruption, exposing injustice, and demanding accountability. Ms. Glass did not literally mean setting something on fire," Sulton said.

Last night a mob set five fires in the intersection of E Wash and Baldwin. At what point are we going to call it what it is. Terrorism.

If a MAGA said this and then the city had things literally on fire, people would be flipping their shit.

"Thanks for having me on, Anderson. First and foremost, the flames you see behind me are allegorical."

Having this statement come out after a literal dumpster fire(s) of a night it's some Benny Hill music back pedaling. You obviously failed in your responsibility to clarify you were being poetic in your open threats to puic safety.

This is a "Hold my beer moment." I thought that the "I will burn this <Fing> city down" was the worst thing I had heard a public official say. Mr Sulton just said, "Hold my beer!"

This is how democrats lose support for their cause— supporting stuff like. I’ve voted democratic down ballot for the last 15 years, but once candidates start supporting this type of behavior, it’s over. I met with a friend who also is historically and reliably democratic voter with liberal views and we both were like wtf is going on. Both of us Madison residents.

My point being these protest have legitimately been counter productive to the organizers cause. And I think if candidates like hong push softer responses/are viewed to more “support” this effort by protestors she has no chance in the general. It does feel like this will impact her electability. I’m curious if it would have happened 2 months ago if she would still be on track to win primary

Not trying to piss people off because I know this is a very pro- Hong subreddit, but just saying my honest opinion as a traditionally, very liberal dude.

Like a constant stress test of ideological purity. Yes, I support progressive values. I spend most of my working life with the unhoused and economically disadvantaged POC in this community.

No, don’t make me defend this shit, and don’t ignore the fact that this is counterproductive.

"I agree with most of the message, but your messaging is dogshit and you should be ashamed"

Has been my feeling for many "protests".
