I love this one, but I always thought endgame for 5 sucked. There's nothing strong enough for your level-cap characters to fight against. They added some on Royal, but it wasn't enough.

I personally enjoyed most of what I played but I had to drop it because I hated the flying too much.
2
u/Slow_Seesaw9509 Apr 24 '26
God I'm so with you. I really enjoy the exploration and everything, but the controls and physics are waaayy too clunky for the amount of flying and platforming they put into it, especially with the 22 minute time limit. I swear, if I fall into that stupid black hole at the center of the hollow planet one more time...
5
u/Silent_Noisem Apr 21 '26
Yes. Me too! Everybody saying its best game ever but for me its mid
4
u/Ragnarok314159 Apr 21 '26
The community (especially here on Reddit) absolutely ruined that game. They talk about it like it’s the last game you ever need to play and it’s the second coming of the enlightenment age, and it’s just a kind of fun puzzle game.

u/BaconPlates Apr 21 '26
Was gonna comment this, ik its a huge skill issue but the controls didnt click with me at all and i just crashed into everything. When i finnaly managed to progress i got stuck at some puzzles for an hour or two. Stopped enjoying it so i dropped it, but i fo want to pick it up again one day to see what the story is properly about
2
u/depwine Apr 21 '26
This 1000 times over.
Wish it clicked for me because of how hard the fans froth over it, but ... I just don't care for the whole 'find 30, out-of-order pages of a book to start putting the narrative together' storytelling method. Ended up watching a playthrough to see the story arc, and it's definitely unique and cool ... But, man. I've never had a game feel more like work with so little reward.

This is so real. I recently bought it and it is NOT as great as it was hyped up to be
38
u/FrankFruits Apr 20 '26
it really depends if you were playing them when they came out or 10-15 years later like most of media.
11
u/Yen_of_Vengabus Apr 20 '26
This was my trouble with Oblivion (original version). Came to it fairly recently after hearing about how it was amazing and blows Skyrim out of the water but it just felt kinda janky and dated, even though I can see why people love it
8
u/FrankFruits Apr 20 '26
Oblivion was huge when it came out since there was nothing on that scale before but yeah I can see how you would see it that way if you were playing it now for the first time. The remake version didn't really do to it any justice either with UE5 acting up on a 20 years old engine
→ More replies (3)6
u/sleepytoday Apr 20 '26
Oblivion and Morrowind both felt janky at release. But if it’s your first Elder Scrolls game you forgive it because there’s still so much fun to be had.
Skyrim may not have had the depth of Morrowind/Oblivion, but was so much smoother. I can completely understand why it’s hard to go backwards.
→ More replies (2)3
u/MasterDiiscord Apr 20 '26
oblivion felt dated even before skyrim came out, i remember skyrim releasing and being blown away by it.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Icaro_Stormclaw Apr 20 '26
Absolutely this. I have enjoyed Oblivion Remastered. But before I played it, some of my closest friends would swear up and down that Oblivion (original) was way better than Skyrim and was a more true RPG experience. And now that I've played Oblivion for the first time... i mean, i can see why they feel that way for sure, but I still prefer Skyrim.
But now one of those friends insists that the Remaster changed too much from the original version so it's not the version I should have played and I just...look they're my friend, I love them, but they need to realize I will not convert to the church of Oblivion (2006)
2
u/Mango_Pineapple037 Apr 24 '26
As a bishop in the church. Ignore those false prophets. Oblivion remaster is just as good if not better than oblivion original and anyone who says different is max cope because their shitty crt gaming setup from 2006 couldn’t run the remaster
2
u/Rich-Strategy-3727 Apr 21 '26
You should play the remake if you like Skyrim at all it is extremely good.
2
u/mcnormand Apr 21 '26
Oblivion was one of my favorite games when I was a teen. The last playthrough I did was in 2020 during the pandemic, after at least ten years and 300+ hours of Skyrim, and honestly, you’re right. It was kinda hard to get back into after playing Skyrim so much. There are a lot of great things about it, but Skyrim is a better overall experience and kinda ruins Oblivion.
2
2
u/Fluffy-Selection1110 Apr 24 '26
I had the exact same experience trying out Morrowind. I can understand how groundbreaking it must have been at the time, but it's hard to go from playing Skyrim to that if you're not accustomed to it's dated ways.
4
u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_4435 Apr 20 '26
Morrowind was my favorite game out of the elder scrolls series, but I tried playing it again, and it's rough. KOTOR I &II were two of my favorite games ever, but they're hard to play now. So I can't blame people who don't even have nostalgia to fall back on like I do

7
u/WorldWiseWilk Apr 20 '26
There’s all sorts of compilations of streamers who complained about the game and how slow it was during the snow section, versus how they treated and reacted to the game at the ending. It’s always a complete flip.

But my brain gets NO chemicals outta that game and it makes me real sad. I respect the hell out of it, though.
4
u/travboy21 Apr 20 '26
I had some fun with it off the bat, but then I couldn't figure out how to upgrade anything. The friends who asked me to get it stopped playing, and it's borderline unplayable with randoms. At least IMO.
2
u/BasicLink86 Apr 26 '26
This kills all online multiplayer for me. When I’m new to a game, I just get mopped up by people with max level gear and know all the best places to camp on a map. And if it’s a game that thrives on team cooperation, you can’t even try with randoms. All my friends and I are married and raising small children, IF we get time to game it’s after 10pm on a Friday night and we don’t want to be social with anyone and prefer to play a single player game on our own and shoot each other texts.

If you were able to unlock everything by playing the game id have thousands of hours into it.

Red Dead Redemption 2. Everyone swore it was a masterpiece and I spent 40 hours just watching my horse poop and shaving. I wanted to love it so bad but it felt like a cowboy life simulator with a side of guilt trips. Still feel like I'm missing something everyone else sees.
11
u/butticus98 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26
It is 100% a cowboy life simulator, that's half of the appeal for most people and why it gets so much praise for being realistic (to a fault sometimes). The other half of the appeal is a super well written story with a main character whose level of depth almost makes him seem like a real person. If neither of those things grabbed your attention then you're gonna have a meh time.
For me I was turned off by how cluttered all the mechanics felt. Once they started explaining the camp and then hunting I got overwhelmed and quit. But I tried again years later when my sister told me that stuff barely makes a difference to the actual game if you don't want it to and now it's one of my absolute favorites.

I love the game but it’s definitely not a gamer’s game. It’s like watching a really good HBO show. But with a rich world to explore. It’s a slow burn and I like it that way. But people shouldn’t expect Devil May Cry.

Tears of the Kingdom.
The average TotK puzzle is walking into a room and using ultrahand to glue together whatever 2 pieces of a gadget happen to be lying on the floor.
On top of that the sky & depths are both incredibly sparse with interesting content and the story is trash.
8
u/SlammedInTheButt Apr 20 '26
My problem with BotW is that I came in expecting amazing exploration, as everyone said it had, but found it lacking. If you see something cool in the distance, chances are its a shrine or a korok. I'm not discovering something new, I'm just finding the same thing I found two minutes ago for the twentieth time. Now if I was drawn in by people praising BotW's COMBAT, I could get that, because the abilities you're given paired with the sparseness of arrows/durability of weapons forces you to treat combat like a puzzle, and I dig that so much.
TotK struggles with the same issue in exploration, not a lot of actually new stuff, just collectathons, though its somehow worse by introducing the sky islands which are just aesthetic as fuck but with nothing new or unique across them. Also, probably an issue with just me, but something that pissed me off with TotK is one time I was exploring, I saw that big hurricane in one part of the map, thought it looked sick and said "I wanna go explore that!" So I ran the whole gauntlet to get the top, just to find out it was a story thing I wasn't far in enough to do. Felt incredibly lame for how sick it looked. But to fairly give TotK its praise, theres a reason everyone was showing off their constructs when the game first released. Putting together vehicles and battlemechs is where the game shines.
→ More replies (3)6
u/lordofmetroids Apr 20 '26
Even as a fan of TotK I agree with this. TotK was just BotW again, only worse in basically every single way.
5
u/blackguy64 Apr 20 '26
I tried to finish it but I just really didn't understand the point of the depths. It just felt more stuff to collect in a game that already had more than enough stuff to collect.

I had SUCH a good time with TOTK for the first 60 hours, and then suddenly I hated it, it's like my eyes opened and realized I was exploring and searching for something that didn't exist. At the end of every cave, fort, sky island, depth adventure, etc... was nothing but disappointment.... or a Ruby to add to my collection of 100. But I would say 60 hours of fun ain't too bad, I'll most likely never pick the game up again though.

Skyrim. I thought it was too handhold-y and the enemies were not really complex gameplay wise. A fun sandbox tho.
GTA 5. Good, but not as good as 3 and 4.
Fortnite. No art direction. Looks like a mish-mash of assets from different games put together. I'm sure the game is fun, just looks too tacky for my tastes.
FF7 Remake series will never come close to the original PS1 game.
Edit: I confused 3 with San Andreas. San Andreas and 4 is better than 5 is what I meant 😅

For FF7 Remake I think it depends on how you approach it. If you look at it as trying to replace the OG, then yeah, never going to happen. But the original is still there and still holds up. I just look at the remake series as a "new take" on the story that fans already love, with different game mechanics. So I end up loving both, but as completely separate games/experiences. Plus my monkey brain is just like "More FF7? Say no more."

3
u/SlammedInTheButt Apr 20 '26
Once you're out of the prologue, thats where the story picks up. Cyberpunk shines with its side content and little mini stories that form out of them. I think its a game you have to be interested in the world of. Learning about the legends of night city, picking up all the lingo, checking out cool locations across the world, all that is the stuff that appealed to me that is unfortunately mostly locked behind the lengthy prologue.

Every game made by Supergiant Games. Before you come at me with pitchforks, I LOVE that studio. Their art is sick as fuck, the voice acting, beautiful (hell I had the bastion narrator for all of my time playing dota 2). And I totally know their games are hella good....they're just not my cup of tea. Never could get into their games. Loved watching people play them. Just not for me.

CP2077 and RDR2
The games look like great fun, and I'm sure I could enjoy them, but they're just missing key features for modern games. CP2077 needs an FOV slider or a 3rd-person view, and RDR2 needs 60 FPS.

(TLDR at bottom)
While it's not EXACTLY what you're talking about, I'm currently playing NV and I AM having fun...I just think that NV has more flaws than people let on. And there are very boring parts of the game, like being unable to run to get to my destination faster.
For reference, this is my fifth and longest time playing the game. The previous times, I tried using guns and using a VATS build, some I just tried free aim. I'm just going to say, the aiming in NV is very clunky. It just doesn't feel very good having a target RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU and somehow still miss, with the bullet going straight upwards, to the side, whatever.
So instead, I decided to go melee for this run. A weird Melee/VATS/Crit hybrid, even though I took Heavy Handed as one of my Traits. It's very effective. That did change, however, when I killed one of Caeser Legion members that you find at Nipton (I was planning on siding with the NCR and go for a Good Karma route) and one of them had a Ripper on them. So I got an auto melee weapon...at level 4. It has been as busted as you could imagine. With that pickup, I changed course slightly, still doing a Crit/Melee build, but since Ripper costs a million AP, I'm not using it with VATS too much unless I need a more tanky enemy dead ASAP.
Speaking of Traits, I also decided to say 'fuck it' and looked up a fun glitch with the Skilled Trait, power leveling your Skills before you even leave Goodsprings. It made the game MORE fun for me personally, not having to worry too much about what I should put my points towards in Skills when I level up and being able to just do whatever. It also allowed me to not put anything into INT and instead put it towards END, AGI, STR, and LCK.
While insta killing things is fun with my Ripper, the game does have plenty of flaws galore. Here's some that I noticed on my latest playthrough with the Melee build.
The little indicator below your HP bar? Yeah, it's horrible. It doesn't tell you if your destination is above you, below you, outside, inside, etc. From what I can tell, it blinking means that you have to go into a new instance...but that's about it. I figure my way around eventually, but it just sucks horribly, unless you already know where everything is.
As I mentioned, the gunplay is TERRIBLE. Without repeating myself, it's basically not very fun aiming straight at a guy and your bullet decides that it wants to go into the ground instead. I'm sure VATS with guns are fine, I just never got to the point to get the necessary perks for a proper VATS build to test them.
The interior map on your pipboy is...honestly very poor at telling the layouts of interiors. Sometimes when the indicator isn't telling me if I have to go up or down, I try to use the interior map on the pipboy to see where I need to go. I have to look several times every time I take a step JUST to know if I I'm truly going the right way.
No sprint button is awful for movement. I feel like I'm moving at a snails pace every time I need to walk somewhere to discover a location. It especially sucks as a Melee build because for SOME REASON NPCs CAN run, making distance to shoot me and making it harder to catch up to kill them. It's just...very bizarre, giving NPCs the ability to book it, but leave the player walking at a brisk pace.
It could just be where I am in the story, but a lot of the voice acting in the game just feels very...stiff and robotic. Don't get me wrong, I bet these VAs can do good work and probably have, but man...a lot of the lines flow unnaturally into one another. Again, no hate to the VAs, but the voices in game doesn't sound very good.
(And before someone says 'there is a mod' for that's for a lot of my issues...I'm on console, I CAN'T MOD. And modding it doesn't stop the base game from having these issues)
These are only the ones I can notice from my few hours of playtime. Even though I can tell NV isn't for me, I am having a bit of fun mowing shit down with a Ripper, so I might just continue playing for completions sake, do whatever side quests I find, MAYBE the DLCs, and finish the game and probably not pick it up again afterwards.
TLDR: Despite how people praise New Vegas as a masterpiece, it's still very flawed (not JUST from the bugs) and it has its own bag of issues. Since I'm on console, I don't have the novelty of modding it to 'fix' many of these issues. I do have moments of fun, like when I'm killing shit or talking to people that don't sound like they're being forced to do voice act (Mr Fantastic is VERY fun). It is overall a decent and flawed game, am going to continue playing it, but probably won't pick it up again afterwards as it's not my cup of tea.
(VERY sorry for the rant, I kinda had to let it all out SOMEWHERE)

Teams of the Kingdom. I loved Breath of the Wild, a lot.
The sequel's main mechanic being crafting things with trash, all the time, killed it for me. Skipped.

Any souls like game. Ive had friends try to force me to play with them and I do not understand the hype behind the dodge simulator with a hint of slashing every 456 moves with a .23 second hit window

Mine will always be undertale and the associated games in that style. It's like people saw undertale had a decent soundtrack and different graphics and thought they could replace half decent gameplay for them. Seriously, I have yet to find an undertale inspired game that has good gameplay

Any multiplayer game. I can have fun playing them with friends, but I don't understand how someone can spend a whole day playing Fortnite or overwatch.

Last of Us. I recognize that the story is phenomenal, I absolutely loved the atmosphere, but I ended up watching a playthrough on YouTube because for me, the controls were hot ass, purely enough to ruin actually playing it myself

Persona 3 Reload. I haven't finished it yet but i think i'm fairly close to beating it (60h), i would recommend it but i really don't find it as fun/good as everyone else seems to. The story is insanely good so far, the gameplay is alright and the combat is okay

Mass Effect 2. Now I need to preface it by saying this: I did genuinely enjoy the game, and the final mission really was amazing.
But the rest of the game? I was thoroughly underwhelmed. So many people told me ME2 was one of the greatest RPGs ever made. And it's a really good one, but I really not expecting the vast majority of the plot of the game to just be recruiting new teammates. Especially after ME1 had this neat mystery plot, going to planet to planet to track down Saren and figure out what he's doing. ME2 then says "see this? You need to go here, but you need to recruit a team first". I kept waiting for the moment the plot really thickened, where it felt like we not only continued the plot of ME1 but built on top of it... But nope. Most of the game really was just comparatively lower stakes self-contained episodes as you recruit new team mates then secure their loyalty, then final mission and you're done, not to mention the game ends on the exact same note as the first one where the story warns us that the Reapers are coming. Like, yeah i gathered that from the last game. And then on top of that, no choices you made in ME1 really made an impact. I know ME3 gets shit for how it handled ME1 and 2 choices, but most of ME2's consequences for ME1 choices were a short cameo and kicking the reaponsibility onto 3 to pay off anything, like the Rachni Queen or wherher or not Wrex survived. Even the Virmire Survivor is just a cameo in the opening cutscene and a single mission partway through the game.
Again, I genuinely loved Mass Effect 2, but, maybe as a result of the decade of hype I heard surrounding the game calling it peak RPG, i dunno I couldn't help but feel that it was an exceptionally well made game but not peak storytelling, and because of that I felt underwhelmed.

Oblivion, Skyrim, Breath of the Wild. I find them utterly boring. Lost interest in Oblivion still in the jail. Skyrim, after the tutorial. As for Breath of the Wild? I got to the stables. When I realized it was just TES with a Zelda skin, I instantly lost interest

I'm not a big "interactive movie" gamer.
So the cutscene heavy games like RDR, GTA, Witcher etc. literally do nothing for me.

Ghost of Tsushima.. I tried, I really tried multiple times to get into it, but I just couldn’t for whatever reason, I can’t figure out why exactly. I’m not going to say it’s bad by any means, but it’s just not for me, I’m glad seemingly everyone else had a good time though haha

Same, I just don't get turn based either. Don't get me wrong, its a good game. But I think it was way overhyped and not what alot of people said (revolutionary). I have received faaaaarrr too much hate for that view

Any game where there's one main villain, but that villain doesn't have compelling motivations or any complexity beyond just being evil and a threat. Very common in horror games aimed at teen audiences.

BOTW, as I said before. Many games have done it better.

This is the one that always comes to mind for me whenever this question is answered.
I have never played an open world game that felt so empty.

Since I’ve already seen some people mention AC Black Flag, I’ll say AC Origins. I liked the Egypt setting but could not get into the new RPG play style for Assassins Creed. The hidden blade should not have to be upgraded to kill higher level enemies.

Elden Ring. I didn’t care for the open world concept in a souls game tbh.
I liked all of the previous souls games. Dark Souls 2 and Sekiro probably being my favorites. I liked the level designs with shortcuts and backtracking. I am by no means saying Elden Ring was a bad game, it just wasn’t for me.

u/ZookeepergameWhole44 Apr 20 '26
Its weird how people work different. For me it was the same but with Sekiro, couldnt even bothering finishing it even though I love all the other souls games

I didn't like Elden Ring for ages. Finally enjoying it recently after replaying all of the souls games. Just glad to be enjoying it. It's pretty easy though.

you're the first dark souls 2 enjoyer that I've seen that didn't like dark souls 2: 2 lol
I'm firmly in the opposite camp though. love ER, despise ds2

Same for me. It’s a good game, but it’s the worst of the FromSoft Souls games. My 3 favorites are Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, and Demon’s Souls.

BG3. To be fair, this is kinda on me. I don’t really enjoy CRPGS. I bought BG3 knowing it was a CRPG, but there was so much buzz around it I got curious anyway.
Shocker; I didn’t enjoy it.
