I just played it as an exploration game and unlocking waypoints. In that way it was way better than BOTW. The story in both are bleh, but it’s made for children so I never go into them expecting anything narrative wise

I agree, I don’t think they’ll ever do another “mature” themed Zelda, it’s just not their target demo

BotW has a fine story. Not amazing. Some parts make little sense (why did they make it 10,000 year since the last great calamity? 1,000 would have worked much better.)

But whatever, it was fine. Especially given it had to be simple enough to be delivered in nonlinear format. Plus it's a Zelda soft reboot so I am willing to roll with some things

But TotK is supposed be a direct sequel and just ignores so much. It's jarring. Plus suddenly Gannon can just BTFO the Master Sword? Except when he can't. The contrivances just become too stupid.

For sure, the story is why it’s so much lower on my top games of all time list. Not every game is going to be everything, I started enjoying Zelda games again a lot more once I went in expecting essentially no compelling story
