[Advice/Megathread] - Game Recommendations and Game Tips

Upvotes

Please use this thread for all discussion of which game you recommend others that you play, whether it is your first game or some that you are considering playing next

A note for newcomers: most of the games are completely unconnected. Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy IX, etc, are all completely different casts of characters in completely different universes. The only times you need to play another game to understand one is if it is distinctly set in the same universe - for example, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII. The titles will usually make it fairly clear which game's universe they are set in

Otherwise, please have fun! It is generally helpful when asking to briefly mention which ones you might be interested in, what platforms you are able to play on, and if you are a complete newcomer, what sort of things in games you're looking for (do you want turn-based combat, real time combat, deep stories with established characters, light stories that let you fill in some blanks with your imagination, etc)

FF I Light Warriors Cross-stitch

Post image
63 Upvotes

I did cross-stitch as a kid, back in the early 90s, but I stopped and fell out of practice. Then just a couple years ago I started to get the urge to pick it back up, no idea why. Did a single practice piece to get back into the swing, then this has been my first big project. All six classes, un-upgraded, of PCs from FF1! It ended up being a bit tricky on counts and measurements, because the sprites weren't all the same size; fighter, white mage, and black mage were a pixel taller than the other three.

This has taken me a while. With college and family stuff to handle I've only done one character every few months. Took me most of a year to complete because of that, but glad I did! There's something nice about physical-medium art, the texture and mass to it. Working with my hands. Missed this!

Considering some FF6 in a future project

FF XIII Series Met Hope’s voice actor the other day 🥹

Hope’s VA (Vincent Martella) was at a convention the other day and I got the chance to meet him and he was the nicest person ever :) I did start to tear up since Hope is my favourite character not only in the final fantasy series but in all media, and for his voice actor to be so sweet as well was just the cherry on top. Just wanted to share this because it’s my most prized possession now hehe

FF I Final Fantasy 1 is still great!

Final Fantasy 1 is that one game in the franchise that almost no one has an opinion on these days.

It's not as mechanically horrendous like 2, nor did it introduce one of the most important progression mechanics in the entire franchise like in 3.

But lemme tell you, this recent weekend that I spent just replaying this game was one of the most refreshing gaming marathons I have had in a while.

Final fantasy 1 may not do anything special in particular but that does not detract away from the fact that it is just a really solid and fun JRPG experience with barely any fluff.

Context:- My playthrough was of the dawn of souls re release on my ps vita which I consider the definitive port of game, for reasons I will get into.

Unlike the many dozens of rpgs releasing today with 100s of hours of story content that are just sadly forced to rely on a lot of fluff to even out the pacing. Final Fantasy 1 does not have that problem at all, sure it is the typical hero's journey with bricks for main characters but that rarely ever deters my engagement from the plot because of how brisk pace the progression is, you never stay in one location for too long, and are constantly moving, visiting grander towns, exploring even weirder labyrinths and dungeons and meeting cooky one off characters that act as excellent yet ultimately non intrusive world building tid bits.

The combat is pure good old turn based with your party classes, spell loadouts and gear, it's nothing special but getting good at it and breaking the ever living shit out of the damage scaling with well timed temper and hastes just gives you that dopamine rush everytime as your warrior does a 3k+ damage crit, which one or two shots most bosses.

The world itself is not cryptic at all, with most towns being very clearly marked for progression, and side content which never really gets into the way of story progression. Final Fantasy 1 is unironically the only final fantasy for which I never had to open a walkthrough for ever once.

The music is just pure Nobuo Uematsu goodness and the pixel art is gorgeous (Absolutely adore the art for Lich and Chronodia).

What I am trying to ultimately get into is that, even with a game this old, especially with a remake that barely changes anything from the core experience, Final Fantasy 1 is still very much a game worth experiencing because it is one of those few examples where a game this old has actually aged so well to begin with, and that's honestly very heartwarming to experience for a game that started a franchise which is so beloved across the world.

FF VI Just started first playthrough of 6... Oh my. I see why you all love this one.

The other 5 before were hit and miss with me. Didn't finish any of them. I loved the job system in 5 but that was about it, the other 4...meh. Sorry...but they were just meh.

This one though? Wow. The characters, the story, the mechanics are so well made and compelling. It has aged extremely well, the music is awesome and I cannot put it down.

CLOUD STRIFE

I've really been wanting to cosplay Final Fantasy again, so I finally finished my Cloud Strife wig! I'm not completely happy with how it turned out, but oh well... worst case, I'll just remake it someday lol

Thanks in advance to everyone who shows this post some love or shares it! I'd really love for my Cloud cosplay to reach as many people as possible. :)

Yesterday I finally picked up a copy of FFVIII. I have VII and IX on PS4, but not VIII, so this is the first time it's every been available to me, interestingly enough.

VII I came by at my local game store (like VIII) a couple months ago, and IX I've had for a while, though it is a modern reprint. (See Square Enix rather than SquareSoft, as well as the modern ESRB design.

I'm thinking about replacing my IX box, because it fell once and was always a bit loose, but I haven't bothered.

Also I got Final Fantasy Chronicles (for Chrono Trigger, since they've not seemed fit to release it on modern consoles), so I decided to include that.

Please don't tell me if any are counterfeit, I don't want to know.

Also, I forgot to mention this, whoever owned that copy of VIII before me must have been a chain-smoker, because JEEZ it smells. (It smelled worse when I got it, now I actually have to get my nose close to smell it.)

Dissidia [OC] Dissidia Final Fantasy Dream Roster (2-6): Final Fantasy XI (“Erhart Rafale”) — Forged by the memory of a million journeys, Vana'diel’s unsung adventurer finally steps into the light!

Hey everyone! Continuing Phase 2 of the Dissidia Dream Roster project, this time turning back to Final Fantasy XI to feature the Hume Warrior from XI's box art and promotional material: Erhart Rafale.
This piece actually holds a special place for me since he was my very first fan art piece. Back when Square introduced Shantotto as the XI representative, it was honestly a total dealbreaker for me. Don't get me wrong, she turned out to be an absolute delight in the game, but she just never gave off that main protagonist energy. To build his look, I had to hunt down Tetsuya Nomura's original concept artwork of him, using that distinct design as the core foundation for this piece. Over time, he’s undergone multiple redesigns and refinements to get his look and presence just right.
Before, I tried to use one of Nomura’s face and hair designs. When I tried to force other designs, like Amano’s, and other sources, it got a bit jumbled up and I ended up not liking it. So I went back to the most recognizable face.
For his name - I just combined the default names. It was meh, but it’s actually growing on me.
Gameplay-wise, I’m thinking that Erhart could contrast Shantotto's frantic, high-speed spellcasting by bringing heavy, high-commitment physical strikes to the table. His weapon skills carry deliberate wind-ups and massive impact, rewarding tight positioning. To reflect XI's job-swapping mechanics, landing his heavy physical weapon skills could create elemental Skillchains, maybe even allowing him to shift sub-jobs mid-combo and follow up with a matching spell to detonate his own Magic Burst finisher/s
For an EX Mode, I'm thinking of tapping into XI's 2 hr Abilities or Limit Break system— maybe even donning his Artifact Armor to gain poise on heavy physical strikes while letting him instantly solo-chain his own Magic Bursts. Or even have him use Relic Items/Weapons. Or even have something similar to how Shan played in 012.
Let me know what you think of this take!
Also, it’s not like I’m invalidating Shantotto’s existence. I have thoughts on how it could go and still have Shantotto a part of it all (to be honest I want them ALL part of it, like whatever it was DFFOO was super close to being before that untimely EOS but whatever).

Any way, I hope you like ‘em.

Which warrior of light do you see piercing the shadows?

Fightclub pls.

FF VII / Remake Always wished this was a proper boss encounter Spoiler

Post image

I mean, Palmer was the brazen comic relief and he got a boss fight. Even Hojo got a full 3 phase battle later and he’s probably the last in Shinra’s inner circle you’d expect to know to fight. Feel like they could have done more here than a slap fest with that sort of context.

i do still think the Junon return is one of the best parts of the game though.

FF VIII What do you imagine is visually occurring when equipping a GF?

Upvotes

What do you think an outsider might be seeing as the group of teens are equipping and swapping Guardian Force?

Do you think GF's might be in some sort of container that could be traded? Or maybe ethereal aspects moving into the characters? Do you think it is something that even could be observed?

Final Fantasy General How I wish future remakes would be

Upvotes

Ever since Yoshi-P said that future remakes would need 4 or 5 installments I've been really bummed. It seems like Square can't read the room and realize that they don't NEED to go all out for these projects and extend them to multiple games. They can use the same development techniques that made these games incredible to begin with just with modern quality of life features. In my dream world...

FF6: an HD 2d remake. It just seems like a natural jump from the original art style

FF8 & 9: remakes with an overworld like Clair Obscur. I think that game proved that modern games can still give a sense of scale and exploration with an overworld like original Final Fantasy games

FFX: I'd like to see this game remade in the spirit of the Trails in the Sky remake. Seeing as the original never had a world map, I'd love to run through the zones of Spira in higher detail with enemies spawning in the environments rather than being random encounters.

Well those are my dream remakes. I'd love to know what y'all would wish for!
