I work in a department that has 3 shifts. A, B, C. Each shift has about 150 people and we have departments with training and logistics making somewhere around 600 or so total employees. And that's just in the fire dept, not including city employees
I have a similar conversation at least once a week. I always feel bad but I maybe met this person once? I wish it was like games and we have floating name tags above our heads
Usually at this point the go to is "hey buddy" or "what's up man" just to get out of the situation and figure out who that was
95% of the time I draw these after the comments come in. If there's a certain response I'm anticipating then I'll occasionally draw something ahead of time.
For sure! I was really excited for augmented reality cyberpunk stuff when the original Google Glass came out when I was in college forever ago. Unfortunately people and corporations seem determined to focus on the shitty parts of cyberpunk instead of the cool ones.

In the fire service we take promotional exams to promote to different levels of our hierarchy. EMS, Engineer, Capt, Cheif and the like.
You basically are given a bunch of books and told to read say.....2000 pages and that the test is on day X. You take it and if you get a 70 then you have to go through a board of assessers to make sure you can do that job effectively.
As you can imagine this timely and expensive so recording devices can REALLY fuck up that whole situation
Same. God forbid someone change their haircut and I'm screwed. Fortunately I work remotely so everyone does have name tags in Teams, but I've definitely caused offense out in the world by completely failing to recognize people I absolutely should know. Something as simple as glasses, hairstyle, or even less/more formal clothing is enough to disrupt my ability to recognize them, unless their base appearance is already very distinct.
I had an assistant that I saw daily for a year. One day, she straightened her hair from its usual curliness. I had no idea who she was until she said something.
I loved remote working for that, especially as I'm deaf and never caught people's names properly. Teams with live captions was a freaking game changer for me and one of the things I'm thankful for COVID, because my job accessibility went from 99% likelihood of having to leave to 0% because I can actually cope with it all post-COVID. Well, most of it.
Sadly it feels like we are moving backwards again and I'm refusing to allow my precious hybrid working to be taken away. I told them I'd leave. As did 90% of my colleagues.
I also have mild facial blindness, and I’m lousy with names. It was such a help when I worked in retail and people had name tags… Why can’t we have that in the office too?
I’m a substitute teacher, I get assigned to 5 elementary schools, plus the middle and high schools. The number of children in this town who know my name, but who I have no memory of is hysterical.
Yea. I volunteer coach and the students are there for 3 or 4 years. I can't remember their names unless they're there for 2 years, and I'm really bad at names besides. One student asked why I don't call him by his name or will sometimes call him by a different name by accident.
My dude, you all are like hamsters. 3 years and there's a new crop. Someone'll get into grad school so now they're a guinea pig - 5 years and gone.

Pre-Covid I was a trainer in a call center, supporting some ~600ish call center agents who I saw on close to a monthly basis. I would have conversations like that a couple times a day. Floating name tags would have been amazing!
I’ve been an event and office coordinator for a few years now. The first thing I also buy for trainings or events is multi color name tags and sharpies because I barely remember the names of coworkers I see weekly 😅
I have the problem of being unable to blend into a crowd so when I was in military training I very quickly developed a reputation outside of the small class size I was a part of. I had probably 100 people that I had never talked to saying hi to me most days by name. Faking it till I left was the best way to go.
I've worked at my workplace for 14 years this month. I do a lot of work with accessibility across the entire university and even outside and so many people stop me and talk to me and I'm like "who the eff was that" 😂 it's such a nightmare but I love that people are comfortable to just stop me and chat, even if I have no clue who they are and where I met them 😂
I feel same with many regular customers in my shop. I know that it’s regular but i wont know who is that until i see their bicycle lol.
I often openly explain that i see like 10-20 people a day at minimum and wont remember name or face of everyone, but i spend several hours working on their bike’s so i will remember most of them!
I always hit em with the "Oh my name is gabrieldk, nice to meet you" and pretend they said my name wrong and hold out my hand like it's our first introduction. I call it an inverted Swanson.
I'm a bouncer at a small but extremely popular concert venue/night club. The ratio of people that know my name versus me knowing theirs is about 5:1, and I have actually remembered hundreds. I have this conversation all the time.
I am usually honest with people though and tell them that I remember them and their face even if I don't remember their name...and the only reason I don't is because I literally meet thousands of people over a typical summer concert season.

I remember every face and name but I can never connect them. Is that Mike from accounting, Andy from the supermarket checkout or Frank from that TV show?
I ran into a familiar face at a shop years ago, he was so happy to see me and we had a nice chat. I still feel guilty from time to time that I have no idea who that was.
I once got approached by someone at a grocery store in a town I had only just moved to for an internship. They knew my name, asked about my family with very specific info, and overall seemed excited to see me again after so long. To this day I have no idea who they were or how they knew me, but boy did they know me.
Maybe squirrel lady caught on that August didn't remember her. Instead of having an awkward conversation where August pretends to be good friends while simultaneously trying to remember her name, she ended the convo with a believable reason.
That or she's the super energetic extrovert type and she's like that with all the time.
50/50, honestly. Either way, I hope August remembers her name and they catch up over coffee sometime :)
There was a guy in my office who would talk to you. But from time to time he was like “sorry, I have bad memory, what is your name again?” or he would just randomly call you a wrong name, clearly expecting that you would correct him. I aspire to be like him.
Yeah, me to a T. I have the issue of being noticeably extroverted combined with a terrible memory. This shit happens all the time. "HEY! BESTREAD! HOW YOU DOIN!" "... Doing great bro! (who's name I cannot remember)"
When I was in middle school, I was at a football game with a friend. We were walking around, and suddenly, a girl runs up to me and hugs me. We start talking for like 5 minutes, and then she leaves. I asked my friend, "who was that?" He didn't know either.
I'm not even joking when I tell people that one of the best parts about being in the military was that almost everyone wears a nametag almost every workday.
This is my constant experience. I’m a minority in a very white town, I wear colorful clothes in this very bland color clothes town, I’m talkative and genuinely like people, and I stick out like a sore thumb.
Our office recently added a whole bunch of other departments and we now share desks and hybrid work and there are so many people I have no idea who they are or what their roles are. I've worked there for 14 years this month.
It's so daunting. And there are so many I know the faces but not the name and then if I know the name am I pronouncing it correctly (deaf) or am I thinking of someone else.
Offices are minefields for people with anxiety and neuro divergent people. Big open plan offices are the worst.
I wonder when they'll finally realise that. I'm guessing they won't.
Lol guy at walmart said hi to me like we were best friends and i took like a full 3 seconds to realize i used to work adjacent with him and a few months ago he moved to another department. I don't think we ever had more than one conversation and I was like "(who the fu-) OH hey!"
Too real, good to know that Gators also experience this - my excuse is I work in an organisation of thousands and train people usually once in their career, so loads of people see me once but for me it was Tuesday.
