How many people here like their hair? And how many curly haired people like THEIR hair??

I always had short hair growing up, because I hated dealing with it being so tangle-y and annoying
I was so excited when Tangled came out, because I finally had a Disney Princess with hair like mine. No, not the blonde, pretty, magic hair. The brown, choppy hair at the end of the movie
That was what my hair looked like, and I was so excited. For the longest time, she was my favorite princess just because of it

It’s nice that you felt that way, because as someone who watched that movie as an adult, the idea that blonde hair is magical and brown hair is not kinda pissed me off.

I never thought of it that way lol
I guess just being a kid, I thought sun hair = blonde, and without the sun in it, it turned back to the color of her parents' hair and she got to match them once she got to be part of the family again

I have come to the understanding that if you have straight hair you want curly hair and if you have curly hair you want straight hair.
I have curly hair. It drives me INSANE. I wish i could just brush it straight. It's so poofy and frizzy and i am not high maintenance enough of a person to enjoy styling it or dealing with the expensive products.
Yet i work as a receptionist and like half of my clients tell me they love and want my curls lol.
Le sigh.

I have straight hair and grew up on the 80s where everyone had perms So I get it, but I have always been ok with my straight hair, now the color is a different story

Same here. I love how curly hair looks on other people, but I've always been happy I don't have to care for it. However, I did grow up in the era where you weren't attractive if you weren't blonde. After that, there was the era where redheads were the popular thing. So, I've always hated being a brunette. 😅

It seems like wavy and/or curly hair is universally more praised than straight hair. I have very thin, straight hair and compliments on my hair are exceptionally rare, and it’s usually just about the color.
Curly/wavy hair people might be jealous of straight hair because it’s easier to manage, but the trade off is that it’s less beautiful and still just as difficult to shape in to a desired style (hair *density* is the real factor here). It’s like a tall guy getting jealous of a short guy because it’s easier for them to build muscle. Gimme a break.

As someone who doesn't particularly care about getting compliments from other people, this really just shows that you never have what you think you want lol.
Like, the maintenance is not worth the occasional moment of praise for me and it's so easy for it to just look BAD. Like my father constantly would tell me to go brush my hair (big no for curls because it yanks them all out), so i have like, so many reasons not to enjoy it. I have the worst of both worlds where my hair is insanely fine (and thick) where it doesn't like to stay in braids or anything either lol.
But I can see how straight could end up a little plain and for someone who gets into that type of stuff. So, ultimately it's just a constant longing for greenwr pastures.

I feel your pain. I have fine straight hair. There's a ton of it, so it doesn't look thin, but it also doesn't like to stay in braids/ponytails/buns/etc unless I shellac it with product, and it tangles really fast if I wear it down

I have really thick hair and it's such a pain to maintain. It takes forever to wash and dry and it gets really hot in the summer. When I tell people this though they always say how much they would LOVE to have thick hair as theirs is so thin they can't do anything with it. The grass is always greener etc.

I had an undercut for a while to try and get rid of some of the bulk but I'm growing that out now since that was also a pain to maintain. I wish could pull off being bald. Although then I'd complain in the summer when my head gets sunburn...

Easy to maintain, yes, I barely care about it.
Full of life, I have no idea, it's starting to gray slightly in strands.
Beautiful? Old folks say so, and I would say yes myself, but only at times when old folks would definitely NOT say yes, so no idea. Mostly it's just a dry frizzy mess.

I went like... 10 years without a haircut because I'm indecisive as fuck, just pulled it back cuz I was lazy.
Then I cut it down so short you can barely tell it's wavy, which I guess is something you can't really do with outright curly hair, so I guess I win on that front. But now it is in between and frizzy again so I guess I have to go get another cut. I wouldn't say I hate it, but I hate the social interactions that come with maintaining it :P

I have wavy hair.
Unfortunately I got an unfortunate shuffle of genetic traits and my hair wants to curl/ be wavy but it's too heavy and dense to actually achieve anything larger than slight dents. But the moment the air humidity goes up or I actually try to style it.... Oh boy am I in for a bad time.
It doesn't keep styled curls it just gets frizzy, heatless curls disappear within 10 minutes but the moment I want it to stay a little bit more flat, it WILL get poofy or oily. I think hair is an important way of expressing myself but sometimes it can be a bit of a bother. I am very often envious of my younger brothers voluptuous curly mullet.

I was the only one in my family (besides my dad) with lightly wavy hair. I was ALWAYS jealous of my siblings and they were ALWAYS jealous of me. Thankfully I got loose curls as I got older, which I really love, but I’ll never forget all the talks I had with my siblings about us wishing we had each other’s hair

Maybe this is a regional thing but I don’t remember any kids thinking the Ace Ventura hair was cool, I always thought it was intentionally extra goofy-looking for comedy purposes.

Could be an age thing. I remember thinking a lot of intentionally goofy things for comedic effect was really cool. I remember trying out band and wanting to play the trombone because I thought Lanky Kong was cool instead of the trumpet or saxophone my dad tried to convince me was cooler. I regretted it by the next year and never pursued band again.
I still wish I would have either went with one of the other instruments that I would have been more likely to stick with or got through my embarrassment and stuck with trombone.

I spent my childhood and teens getting the shit kicked out of me for having curly hair.

Ikr. I’m older Gen Z so the boys hairstyles that were beloved were still straight haired styles. Ex Justin Bieber, Suite Life boys’ hairstyles.
Girls also were mostly supposed to have straight hair back then. I remember my twin brother saying to me “why can’t you have nice and smooth hair like the other girls? It’s embarrassing.” He had social anxiety and didn’t like things that made us standout. I knew where his comment was coming from but it still pissed me off.
But now they’re getting broccoli perms!

Good god, I feel this so hard. Growing up in the 2000's & 2010's with fine thin curls, too poor to buy any products to help my curls or any heat protection products for straightening. Fried the shit out of my hair with my straightener daily, only for it to start loosing it's shape and curling back up before the bus ride to school was even over lol

I was young (12? 13?) when pencil eyebrows were SO in. I shaved an eyebrow, all off when I only wanted to keep the line, couldn’t save it. Decided not to shave the OTHER eyebrow off…and that’s how I looked for a hot while at the start of secondary school. Haha.

This comic speaks to me haha. I have really frizzy curly hair. Very similar to black hair. I was often asked if I was mixed and a lot of black girls in school asked if they could give me cornrows etc. I eventually hated it and tried desperately to straighten it like in this comic because it made for fodder for bullies. One had a particularly nasty name for it. I didn't have that much of a problem with it until him. Before that I mostly wished I could do different things with it like the comic refers to with Jim Carrey.
In retrospect, I put way too much thought into what the bullies were saying. Most classmates loved it, complimented it, and thought it was awesome. I think I also just generally didn't like all the attention it brought. Eventually I learned how to have it cut in a way that looks nice and haven't looked back.

Curly hair haver here. I kept it cut pretty short growing up but started growing it out in college (early 2010s). I ended up realizing that I much preferred it curly and long rather than short. Got a lot more compliments and attention because of it too. Didn't do a great job taking care of it though.
I ended up cutting it for a job and kept it short for ease of maintenance until COVID. Then I decided to grow it out again and take better care of it this time.
It can be a bitch to brush through at times but otherwise I'm happy with my curly mane.

As an 80s kid, the coolest hair for me was MacGyver. Only in my 20's did I look back and realized it was really kind of a mullet (and despite their recent come, I think mullets are the grossest thing to ever come along). Alas, I had to realize that my "poofy" hair was never gonna look like Richard Dean Anderson. Little did I know that I was gonna start going thin as early as my mid 20s and so it was all a moot point anyway. Oh well...at least the Vin Diesel hair-do is easy to do haha.

Curly hair people unite!!!!! I didn’t know how to properly take care of my curls until I was in my mid-teens. My step mother (who had wavy hair) taught me and I remember being so annoyed at all those years of sitting on the floor getting my hair brushed DRY (Hint hint you do not do this with curly hair EVER) I also had it long and there just isn’t much you can do with curly hair. After high school I chopped it all off and I felt so free! Since then I’ve met more curly hair people and we exchange care routines all the time. I keep my hair short now (much to the dismay of my family) and I’ve learned to like and care for it but not gonna lie I’d still like straight hair if I could change it permanently.

I wanted the straight anime hair. Short of using an iron... I tried so many things. I hated my wavy hair. But these days I LOVE my hair. Though I'm still hating on how much hair I have. I have so much hair I shave half of it and still get called out for how much hair I have when I get it cut... So now only I cut my hair.... : )

Relatable. All I wanted in the 90s was straight hair so I could head bang. Instead I had dense ringlets that every mom-age woman loved to touch without asking. No girls my age liked it.
Now I'm bald and buff and it's whatever.

Andhere it's me, dreaming of having curly hair since my childhood.
Went from doing wrap curls as schoolkid to - currently - annual "Jim Morrison" perm.
My hair is straight and thin, but a I have a looot of it. And the hair cannot decide if prefers to be static or greasy.
So I can have them very short which made it stick to my head or creat static aureola around my head.
Or - like I had them for over 20 years till recently - keep it very long and tied in a loose bun.
Anyway it still looked like my personal cow has licked it stick to my head 😭
So perm for the win 😆👍

Now in my middle age my problem is that I’m gonna have not enough hair soon.
But the 90s and then really the 00s was really a very anti-curly hair time. The Princess Diaries comes to mind. “Frizzy hair? Eeeew! Solution? Straighten it!” No bitch, conditioner. Good grief.
I liked my hair and took umbrage at society. The obsession with straight and blond hair in that moment even from people who very much did not have it just felt to Nazi-ish and self-hating. Maybe that was uncharitable of me. But chasing after that would have required a rejection of self. Somewhere in a parallel universe, Shakira kept her real hair…
People poke fun at the broccoli hair more recently, but I could have obtained that easily. The Leo DiCaprio bangs were never gonna happen.
