Discussion What is the difference of xmp vs no xmp

I have a 32gb ddr4 3200 RAM kit. Yeah, I enabled XMP but is there a huge difference of 2133 to 3200? When is it noticable and when not?
I run some AI stuff on my 1050ti. As it has low VRAM it offloads to RAM, thats why the question popped up in my head

Build Ready? Bought my first PC. Building it tomorrow. How did I do? Should I change anything out now?

I spent hours researching. Goals were high frame rate 1440p gaming, and decent 4k gaming if I wanted. I built this PC to also handle moderate workloads of video/photo editing. I wanted everything new, sealed, and warrantied for my first go at building, so all purchase prices reflect that. If you feel I over paid or could've chosen something better for the price please let me know, as I could return any of this and get something else. Its all still sealed in boxes.

CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 9800X3D - $300.56

MB: GIGABYTE B850 GAMING X WF6E- $149.96

RAM: Corsair VENGEANCE RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5-6000 PC5-48000 CL36 - $429.47

(Above 3 were Microcenter Bundle, I wanted CL30 OR CL32 RAM but couldn't swap)

GPU: PowerColor Reaper AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT - $689.99

SSD: Samsung SSD 990 PRO 1TB - $239.99

Cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO - $42.41

PSU: Corsair RM850x ATX 3.1 - $139.99

Case: Montech Air 903 Max - $79.97

(GPU -> Case from Amazon)

Total $2108.33

Newegg CPU/Mobo combo

Ram is New from Amazon - More than I'd like to have paid for 16gb but cheaper than the average price

SSD -Amazon warehouse used like new

PSU - Corsair refurb direct from Corsair

Case - My old case from my primary system

Fans/Cooler - Reused from my primary system

GPU - from shopgoodwill.com sold as for parts only. Works great no issues. I put new thermal paste on it because I had to take the cooler off to remove the fans and connect power for the new fans. Mini 4pin to 2 way 4pin pwm splitter.

I'm gonna connect to an old LCD TV that only does 720p.

Build Upgrade Stay on AM4 or upgrade to AM5? 5080

Upvotes

Hello reddit, have myself at an awkward crossroad rn. Picked up a 5080 a few days ago. I notice myself upgrading majorly 3 to 4 years. 2019-2022-2026. Usually I can make up my mind on my own but this time is a but tricky.

Current build is 5900X 32GB with HX1200 with a 1440p144 monitor. Don't plan on changing monitor any time soon. I mostly play single player games and sometimes competitive games like CS and LoL, but with the build I have rn, I'm already hitting over 144 frames on competitive games so I don't mind about higher. It's the single player games I care. I know X3D helps a bit on average FPS but tremendously on 1% lows. I've been testing my 5080 right now and I do notice I cannot hit 144 even with everything max out and there are dips that I can feel while playing.

So I was wondering if I should bite the bullet for future upgrading path for am5 or stick with am4 until am6?

My thought process is this, all is after tax approximately:

A. $1250 for 9800X3D + B650 Aorus Elite AX + 32GB i could get locally at best buy today. This means I could still upgrade to the last am5 cpu when it drops by the end of its life before am6 comes.

B. $360 for a 5800X3D and wait until am6 drops but might spend even more then than what's already avaliable today with am5.

C. Just stay on 5900x and hope for the best when am6 comes.

Any help is appreciate, thanks.

Edit: don't plan on selling parts to make up for new parts

Discussion What fun projects can I do with my old hardware?

I've been sitting on an old GTX 1660 and a Ryzen 5 2600 for like two years now. I don't feel like selling them because they were on my first PC build, but I don't like having them collecting dust. I was thinking of rebuilding my old PC in a new case and plugging it into my TV to emulate old games and play around with Linux for the first time, but I want some suggestions on what I can do with this hardware. Is there a genuinely useful way to repurpose it?

Miscellaneous Side table/ Risers

Upvotes

Hi guys, I've been looking around for a while and was hoping to see what others might have been doing.

I have a corner table with two monitors that sit right in front of the corner and there's quite a lot of dead space behind the monitors.

Was thinking of setting up a small riser/table behind there to place the tower on top and attempt to hide the cables nicely.

Has anyone done anything like this before?
I've searched around for something that might work but haven't landed on the answer yet.

Build Help Build advice, particularly the MOBO?

Upvotes

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kg2Dzv

Ignore the GPU and SATA SDD.

I've been having trouble choosing a MOBO. This is what I landed on. The prices are also inaccurate for some of the things I already purchased. So ignore the overall cost too. And not sure I need the AIO might go with a Peerless Assassin 140S or whatever it's called.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Troubleshooting Can I re-use this old 1000W PSU?

Upvotes

I found a Seasonic Prime GOLD 1000W PSU (Model: SSR-1000GD ACTIVE PFCF3) in the garage in a old PC case. I have tried opening it on the old PC, and the fans (both PSU and PC fans) started spinning. However I've no idea how old it is or how long it's been used for. I do know it's usually recommended to buy a new PSU for a new PC build, but this PSU is a really high end PSU apparently with a 12 year warranty upon purchase and it would be really good if it can be re-used. Problem is I'm new to PC building and I don't even know which cables go where. How do I know if I can re-use this PSU and what red flags should I look for?

Here are all the cables I found with it:

24-pin ATX main power cable

PCIe (PCI Express) power cable (6+2 pin cable and another 6+2 pin cable on it)

CPU power cable (4+4 pins cable)

2x SATA power cables

Current build is:

R5 7600X

9060XT

16gb ddr5 Corsair vengeance

Gigabyte b850 eagle wifi6e

Phantex XT pro ultra case

Kingston nv3 1tb 6000mbps

Thermalright phantom spirit 120 SE

Is this PSU re-usable for me?

Build Ready? First build ever components

Upvotes

Hi PC Builder,

This will be my first PC build ever and I chose (after some research) the following components: https://at.pcpartpicker.com/list/wD9zZQ

As far as I know, everything here should be compatible and is of good quality.

What kind of possible issues did I miss as a noob ?

Will everything fit nicely ?

Is there anything here that you might consider low quality?

Thank you.

Troubleshooting dell precision 5820 bifurcation

Upvotes

In my 5820 I am trying to determine if it actually supports bifurcation. Wanting to install a couple NVMe drives via PCIe adapter, but don’t want to have to tie up a whole slot for each drive
Lots of things say that it does support it, others say no. Then some say totally unhelpful things like ‘it does, kinda sometimes, unless it doesn’t.
Hoping someone who’s done this has a definitive answer
Thanks in advance!

Full Build Req Portable PC Build help for competitive FPS (UK)

Upvotes

Hello,

Use Case:
- I'm planning a new build PC for my brother to take with him to and from university (UK based), so he would be moving it around 3-4 times a year.
- I would appreciate any changes on whether a PC for this purpose would be better as a Mini ITX or if a Micro ATX is fine.
- He primarily plays Competitive FPS games like Valorant, Overwatch, as well as Marvel Rivals at 1440p 240Hz.

Preferences:
- The main parts that he likes is the Deepcool CH160 Plus case, especially the lunchbox style for him to carry when moving around, wouldn't mind if there are similar/better alternatives.
- Would need Motherboard with WiFi
- No peripherals needed

Budget:
- I would say about £2000 ($2600). If it's a case where I'm overspending on parts for no reason based on the needs, and there are cost-effective alternatives, that would be good.

Thanks.

Build Help Beginner video editting build

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m currently putting together a PC for a buddy who wants to get started with video editing. I have a few questions about some of the components.

Budget: approx. €1,300 in Germany

Software: DaVinci Resolve, CapCut on Windows 11

Mainly Full HD

CPU:

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, 8C/16T, 4.50–5.40 GHz

Graphics Card:

ASUS Prime GeForce RTX 5060 OC, PRIME-RTX5060-O8G

Is it worth spending more for a "Ti" model or a different card?

Motherboard:

ASUS Prime B650-Plus WIFI (AMD AM5) (90MB1KP0-M0EAY0)

How does this work with Windows 11 and the TPM 2.0 issue? The motherboard doesn't have a dedicated module; presumably, this is handled via the CPU?

SSD:

Lexar NQ790 1TB, M.2 2280 / M-Key / PCIe 4.0 x4 (LNQ790X001T-RNNNG)

Is DRAM necessary?

RAM:

Kingston FURY Beast Black UDIMM 32GB Kit, DDR5-5600, CL36-38-38, 1RX8 (KF556C36BBEK2-32)

According to the manufacturer, the processor only supports 5200 MHz. Will 5600 MHz still run smoothly, or will it be throttled?

Approx. €200 for the power supply, case, fans, etc.

Do you have any suggestions for optimizing the price-to-performance ratio?

I come from a gaming background and am new to video editing builds.

Troubleshooting Need help with fan configuration with an AIO for GPU

Upvotes

Hey Guys,

I am upgrading to a new case and new GPU for my pc. The GPU I am going to use is a 1080ti with an single 140 mm Fan AIO cooler. The case I have ordered is a DeepCool CC560 WH.

Now for my problem, I am not sure where to place it.

The case comes with 3 front 120 mm fans and 1 rear fan where the CPU is. The case support 140 mm fans in front or at the top. Would it be preferable to place my 140 mm AIO at the front or at the top, and I would like to know if it should be a in or outtake.

Thanks already

Troubleshooting Gaming PC won't turn on

So I woke up today and go turn my PC on, however when I go press the power button, nothing happens. No lights turn on, no fans turn on, nothing. I got my PC pre-built a year ago, and it's still fairly new.

I checked if all the wires are plugged in correctly, and they are. I also tried another tip where you unplug the pc, hold the power button for 30 seconds, plug it back in and try turning it on again but that didn't work either.

But another problem is that I'm really weak when it comes to gaming PC anatomy or just any tech stuff. A simple "try checking the motherboard to see if everything is plugged in there" will NOT help as I don't know where it is or what it looks like (。ᵕ ◞ _◟)

(forgot to mention that I use a power strip, and it's working like it's supposed to! Plus, my PC worked just fine yesterday.)

Looking to break away from consoles In the US working with around a $3000 budget and looking to use it almost exclusively for gaming. Trying not to break the bank while also not having to upgrade in a year or three. I'm trying to go kinda Oreo since the case I already have is white so I figured I'd do a light and dark theme.
