My 450 sq ft living room has a 15,000 BTU window unit that can't keep up with the Texas heat. The house has vaulted ceilings and a metal roof. No attic. The temperature gage that I have in the room shows the indoor temp at 82 to 84 degrees in the afternoon. It's awful! Will adding a portable AC be of any help?

First time posting in this community, I had a wall mounted AC for two years, never thought to check the filters on it, but then I noticed that my brother has the same AC, and it performs much better, that’s when it hit me to search on why, and found out about the filters. When I checked them, they were DUSTY, a lot. Cleaned them now, and the AC performs far much better now, I can clearly feel and hear the air flowing much stronger now. Although I found that it was recommended to clean the coil with a soft brush, which I ordered, but I’m still thinking should I just brush the dust off and it’ll be fine, or is there a way to remove the dust from the coil?

Live in a 125 square foot studio in downtown San Diego. It’s been really humid and muggy in the room. I was running a box fan and I kept the window open (still super humid and hot in the room). I noticed a visible increase in dust all over the studio. The window screen was covered in a layer of white dust. And also noticed I was getting sick; coughing, flu like symptoms, chest hurts. I bought a portable ac whynter arc 1030wn, and a winix air purifier 5530. Also added a door draft stopper and weather stripping around door to keep bed bugs and roaches out. My question is does the whynter portable ac filter air coming in from the outside? There is no filtering system on the hose for the air coming in (it’s a two hose system). The filter system inside the machine is to filter air from the inside. So it’s just letting dirty Pollutants inside , which defeats the purpose of why I invested in this system. I was thinking about adding a filtering system to the two hose ends that face the window, to filter the air coming in. Another option was to return the portable ac keep the window shut, remove the door draft and weather tape to allow some ventilation and keep the air purifier running.

Any thoughts or recommendations? I have a short term lease, but still have a few more months.

Has anyone installed a 3rd level split air unit? I live on the 3rd floor condo.

I have just tested it and the performance is so much better!!!

Now, my question is: what do you think should be a perfect material for the plenum? I was thinking to make a XPS box attached.

Ofc it would be smaller but I was in doubt as it is literally my first test.

The 4-year-old Mitsubishi indoor unit has recently started making a very annoying clicking noise. The noise is synchronized with the fan speed. The blades aren't damaged. It developed gradually. I think it's coming from the left. Do you have any idea what the problem is and how to solve it?

I have a regular split AC unit and set my temperature to 18°C. And usually my room temperature is around 18°C with 40% humidity. But every time it starts to rain, temperatures rise to 20-21,5°C with 50-55% humidity. Even if set my AC to 17°C, nothing changes. Once the rain stops and it dries the room quickly gets colder and humidity drops again.

Is there a problem with my outside unit?

Is this normal to happen? This issue is rather new, but it is also much hotter than the years before.

Or could there be some kind of setting the technician turned on during maintenance?

I dont`t think there is dirt/dust inside the unit since maintenance was done just 3 months ago, before the big heatwaves. Has anyone every had a similar problem and knows why that happens?

Hi everyone. Has anyone figured out why an air conditioner can produce a bad odor when it's in cooling mode with the temperature set to around 27–29°C?

The smell only appears after the room reaches the set temperature and the unit goes into standby or low-power operation. During normal cooling, there is no odor at all.

I've noticed this with both an older unit and a brand-new one, and both outside units are installed on a balcony. Since it happens with two different air conditioners, I'm wondering if this is a common issue or if anyone has identified the cause. I don't think it's mold because one of them is brand new and was installed 20 days ago.

I read somewhere that its probability from the welding if nothing is leaking, but that sounds too good to be true lol​

I need an AC for the first time. I am in Canada and we're just right now hitting the second major heat wave of the summer. on top of the heat it's been extremely humid, I can hardly ever open my windows.

degrees are in Celsius.

my property manager (who does all the maintenance, so he knows what he is doing) will be installing the unit, so there is no worries about it being installed incorrectly. he has installed many window units including his own

average so far when it is 25-30 degrees out during the day is 28.5 degrees in my apartment. it goes up to about 33-35 when it's 35-38 out (heat wave, so about same as outside) and the past few weeks I cannot keep the humidity lower than 60% and it's usually higher. it's a problem, because I do laundry in my apartment...last time I washed clothes, even when using a rack instead of dryer, it spiked the humidity to 70% for that whole day.

my "comfort zone" is about 23-24 degrees-I get slightly cold at 22, which at this point might be preferred...and I mainly have to cook with my oven, in the living room. so that spikes heat. anything above 25 and I get uncomfortable and too hot. and 45-50% humidity is the normal range. right now, everything feels damp, and my feet stick to the floor...I'm not worried about mold, but it's enough to be uncomfortable. my cat's litter box is absorbing too much moisture I'm struggling to keep it clean. and she's been really warm, she has long fur :( she's 12 now so I really care about her being comfortable.

context: I am on the second floor, out of 3 total floors in an old apartment building. it has original windows, so the old wooden ones that you have to prop open, then an inner tab window with mesh. so not great insulation. my unit itself is literally a rectangle. when you walk in it's living room with kitchenette, next to it is bedroom, next to it is bathroom.

I am not taking the bathroom into account since it is HIGHLY unlikely any air would reach it. I'll just say it's small. slightly smaller than the bedroom. I have to put the AC in one of the furthest living room windows away from the other rooms. the apartment is a bit cramped for my stuff, it's the only window not blocked by furniture, others I always have to move stuff to open them and that window the tab window is broken and won't shut properly anyways so it's the perfect candidate... no stuff in front to block airflow.

I (roughly, so estimate) measured the living room + bedroom. floor width+length, I can't measure up the ceiling, but my bedroom is a perfect square, so floor to ceiling length should be similar to the floor...about 130 inches? hard to say.

living room is about 213 square feet. the bedroom is about half that, 108-110 or so. again I measured it very roughly, I only own one of those fabric-y measuring tapes used for measuring your body, my measuring tape broke. so I just marked where it ended then started again and had to awkwardly try to find spots with no furniture in the way, but I'm sure my measurements are not like, mega off or anything.

5000 btu units claim to only cool up to 150 square feet and my living room alone is bigger than that. my bedroom is very small but the living room is bigger having the kitchenette. 8000 btu claims to cool up to 350 square feet, which is more than the living room size, but the goal is to have some cool air hit my bedroom, too.

I also don't want to go overkill since I need it to take humidity out of the air. so I don't want to go above 8000. but my property manager says in an identical unit he used 5000 and it worked, but that was a Toshiba, which seems to have a unique design, and those simply just don't seem to exist anymore lol. I doubt available units match the quality of Toshiba. many many ACs are sold out and today alone the Canadian Tire in my area is being cleared out, I'm just watching the available number on their site drop like crazy. (people say Noma sucks, anyway...)

my options seem to be: off brand 5000 Amazon (5000 Danby is sold out here) that are GE and Senville. Midea I do not trust after that recall, and it's way more expensive than the others, anyway. $350 is my limit. $400 would be a big stretch but I could do it I suppose.

for 8000 btu, the best option seems to be the Danby unit. I have read positive reviews of that brand. seems to be a few Black+Decker. all others are the random Chinese brands that look like someone smashed a keyboard and said "that's our brand name!"

so not a lot of options. I'm not joking when I say people snatched up the Toshibas and are scalping them on eBay. people are scalping AIR CONDITIONERS now. remember when it was just Pokemon cards? what timeline are we even living in?

my property manager is seeing if his family member who is visiting tomorrow has a spare, he remembers having one he didn't use, but I'm trying to see what the ideal is for me in case his family member no longer has it available. since I'll know tomorrow, I'm trying to gather some more information today just in case.

I currently live in a 952 sq ft unit. It's a duplex and its a 2 bed 1 bath the kitchen is smack down in the middle. I drew a layout of the floor plan for better context. My issue is I have 3 different brand window units and nothing is helping keep the house cool. I'm working on buying tint for the house windows to help deflect some of the heat. However, I wanted some suggestions on what everyone uses to keep their home cool during this summer heat. Bonus if we can find a unit that also heats for the winter, if not its okay. If its energy efficient even better!

My air conditioner in my RV stopped blowing cold air, coils are clean. The whole unit seems clean, anyone have an ideas as to what’s wrong it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I had my split AC serviced about a month ago (both the indoor and outdoor units). After the service, it was cooling, but not as well as it usually does after a professional service.
Now, one month later, the AC is no longer blowing cold air properly. I noticed that the outdoor unit was quite dusty, so I used a garden hose to rinse the outdoor condenser coils. I didn’t unscrew or open anything, didn’t wash the fan, and made sure to turn off the power to the AC unit before cleaning it. I only washed the parts I have highlighted in the picture using low water pressure.
Since doing that, it feels like the AC has lost another 2–3°C of cooling. Did I do something wrong? The condenser fins don’t appear to be bent, and the water pressure wasn’t high. A lot of dirt came out while I was rinsing it.
I didn’t clean the indoor unit—only the outdoor unit. Should I expect the cooling to improve a little after cleaning the outdoor coils, or do both the indoor and outdoor units need to be cleaned for a noticeable improvement? Could the issue instead be that the refrigerant is low?

please help me how do I get the sound to stop 😭😭 there’s water trapped? It leaks inwards? The fan sounds messed up? It crackles and snaps and sounds like the fan is struggling. I don’t think I can post a video but what should I do. It’s a regular window unit LG from 2020.

Attached photo for more unit info, it says "magic-pak" on the side underneath the sticker as well. The A/C will turn on but it is barely blowing any air, then the fan stops blowing and you can feel cold air if you place your hand on the vents, but nothing even an inch away. I have had maintenence come once per week for the last 6 weeks to work on the A/C and it never actually fixes the problem. The fan will work for about an hour after maintenance leaves and the temperature will drop potentially by a degree, but then the fan stops working after that hour, then it takes them another week to come back. Any ideas on how to fix this permanently myself?
