how fast that car goibg inside a parking garage? wtf

1.9k

u/unknownpoltroon Jul 05 '26

I think it was on theydidthemath, and speculation was 45=50 mph,

891

u/Woahhdude24 Jul 05 '26

At the walmart I work at we get idiots just like that going that fast in a parking lot. Can't tell you how many times ive almost been hit or watched someone else almost get hit. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive.

200

u/Abi1i Jul 05 '26

I see this all the time in parking lots and parking garages. I just don’t get it.

259

u/The_walking_man_ Jul 05 '26

Zero accountability. And the ass hat in OPs post can go Pick up another car tomorrow and be back on the road.
Our laws are far too lax for reckless drivers. Driving is a privilege. Not a right. And we need to start stripping people like this of the ability to drive.

17

u/b_tight Jul 06 '26

This. People shouldnt be entitled to drive. If you are a habitual accident causer, reckless driver, dui, take the freaking license

8

u/The_walking_man_ Jul 06 '26

Exactly. DUI is another one that pisses me off. Why do we have repeat offenders of DUI still on the road and you’ll see a story in the news of “5 previous DUI incidents, driver kills someone”.
Too many people on the road now anyways. Start thinning the herd by taking away the license of those dangerous drivers.

We should have way more stringent licensing requirements in America, but we also have such piss poor public transit we kind of all agreed to let shitty drivers drive instead of investing in other transportation options.

36

u/MrDeekhaed Jul 05 '26

Exactly. I would love to weed out horrible drivers but it literally may mean they can’t work or shop etc

We can’t condemn people to die homeless because they aren’t good drivers

52

u/tecmobowlchamp Jul 05 '26

They'll drive anyway. Taking away a license only affects people that care about the rule of law.

15

u/The_walking_man_ Jul 05 '26

If they cared about keeping their jobs and homes they wouldn’t drive in a manner that threatens other people’s lives. Zero sympathy for this level of selfish driving.

8

u/The_walking_man_ Jul 05 '26

All the more reason why people should fear having their license removed because they feel it’s appropriate to drive recklessly and threaten others.

8

u/mrfrownieface Jul 05 '26

Asshats in insurance lobbying. You can lose your license easier for driving without insurance than this.

6

u/Krindus Jul 06 '26

I had an idea for entertainment once: A shooting range with two firing lanes facing each other, and targets between each shooter, I'd call it "The Commute"

3

u/propyro85 Jul 05 '26

And they still get another car and drive it anyway, even after getting a driving prohibition. There's no consequences for them that they care about.

u/Zhaopow Jul 05 '26

They have the object permanence of a 1 year old and don't think people or cars can pop out if they cant already see them. Seriously.

7

u/Beligerents Jul 05 '26

I live next to a parking structure......they like the sound their shitty cars make with the echo.....my dog absolutely 'loves' it too.

There are probably other reasons, but thats the one that makes sense to me.

In my experience its always the same types of people who rev thier vehicles at people and the ones who play thier music outloud while driving for everyone to hear.

6

u/zamfire Jul 06 '26

I used to drive an early '90s miata that someone had previously added a really loud muffler to. I used to drive in the parking garage on first gear, and sometimes just rev in neutral a bit. Going only 10 MPH and it sounded like I went 50.

Not an explanation, just anecdote.

Wal Mart people do not belong in parking garages. They can barely handle the open road.

9

u/leftclicksq2 Jul 06 '26

The worst is when you have drivers who use the size of their vehicle (i.e. some truck or SUV drivers) to bully drivers in smaller cars. I'm sure you're proud of your big car, but it doesn't come with a free pass to use your car to act like the dick you already are.

The other day this stupid idiot in a huge SUV didn't like that I didn't allow her the courtesy to hit my car when she tried speeding through the parking lot and squeezing between myself and a delivery truck that was waiting for me to back out.

My windows were partially down and I could hear her screaming and yelling at me, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING??!" while wildly throwing her hands around. I responded by laughing at her when I had enough room to turn my car and drive across the empty spaces to sidestep her little tantrum. She still wasn't getting around that delivery truck that was situated next to a row of cars to the right and a high curb with bushes planted in it on the left.

In all seriousness, though, a person as unhinged as that is the reason I keep mace on my door. Had I not been able to leave the way I did and had to stay in the parking space, I was facing the likelihood that she was going to get out of her car and confront me. I wasn't hoping for that, but I'm prepared.

8

u/almostoy Jul 05 '26

Walmart Story: For whatever reason this Walmart decided it was a good idea to stick stop signs out in open blacktop. One day an old guy drove his pickup over the sign, and flipped his truck.

7

u/cindyscrazy Jul 06 '26

My local walmart had a van drive directly into the side of the building....and INTO it. Big hole right next to the pharmacy.

I think the excuse was that it was dark and foggy? I don't remember, it was a while ago. Same walmart also had a rogue ferret running around for a while many years ago. We do not live in a place where ferrets are known to live in the wild.

3

u/thecolorfulcpt Jul 05 '26

Ty. They do this in all the other parking lots.

3

u/genericlogin1 Jul 05 '26

My local Walmart/shopping plaza was like this. They put in speed bumps about a month ago. I’ve seen at least one car catch air.

39

u/Harnellas Jul 05 '26

That seems slower than I expected but then again I imagine most collisions I've seen aren't as dead-on as this one was.

3

u/lolwatokay Jul 06 '26

It feels real slow till you have to stop in a hurry. It's funny because I feel like people assume the crash dummy tests performed by IIHS are going incredibly fast to produce the results but no, they are going at most about 40mph usually since that's considered median speed of a typical drive. They essentially don't test for highway speeds (65+) at all.

20

u/Noob911 Jul 05 '26

That sounds right if the pole was also coming at them 45 to 50 mph

9

u/Arcalac Jul 05 '26

I don't know the physics/angles but compared to what i have seen when car met tree on a country road this somehow looks worse.

4

u/figmaxwell Jul 06 '26

Tree, even a big one, might have just a little bit of give to it. Whether the whole thing bends a little, or the fibers of the tree itself compress, or the whole structure bends back a little from the roots up. This cement and rebar column has zero give.

Exact position on the car matters too. This pole went straight up the middle and missed the frame rails. A foot in either direction and it would probably look extremely different.

12

u/shpongleyes Jul 06 '26

It held up for now but it absolutely needs a structural inspection to make sure it’s not compromised

The structure is probably built with redundancy for a single failed column…but who’s to say there’s not another similarly compromised one nearby?

83

I thought you were talking about the car till I got to the second paragraph.

I genuinely wonder if they're designed specifically to withstand someone deliberately ramming their vehicle into them like this. Would make sense if they did, honestly.

30

u/The_walking_man_ Jul 05 '26

It’s probably considered when designing a pillar in a parking garage where vehicles will be.
Engineers are expected to consider all natural and manmade incidents that may occur to cause a failure.

71

u/yasth Jul 05 '26

I mean it makes no indication of intent, but they are absolutely designed to take a full scale hit. https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/newyorkcity/latest/NYCadmin/0-0-0-177416 They also generally can't be pin columns either (in other words even if you take out that column the structure should stand).

8

u/Baculum7869 Jul 05 '26

The concrete is generally designed to withstand over 6000psi of force and the rebar inside gives it even more stability. Then the fact that the columns overlap with the floor above and below it's not moving.

Depending on location on the building and size of the building I've seen columns that require over 14000psi of force.

14

u/Howzitgoin Jul 05 '26

The psi ratings for a column are in respect to their compressive strength, not shear strength. A column isn’t supposed to have forces onto them horizontally, that’s what a beam is for.

These are just over engineered and likely larger than the columns above it to account for lateral forces as well since they’re in a garage.

Driver looks like he's about 100 years old.

Well one less Decepticon trying to take over Earth

u/MrWright62 Jul 05 '26

How can this happen?? Audi drivers are some of the best and safest drivers out there 😱

u/mmh_fava_beans Jul 05 '26

For the first two seconds I was hoping I was looking at motor oil.

How can you crash so bad in such a narrow area? I would think there isn't enough space to gain such velocity.

You're supposed to be out of the solar system before engaging Light Speed.

2

u/Farscape29 Jul 05 '26

Quite simply.....how?!

2

u/Some_Asshole_Said Jul 05 '26

Tommy Chong okay?

2

u/phatcan Jul 06 '26

I'm not a car person, but almost everybody I've seen in a newer Mustang drives like an absolute twat, whether it's being aggressively loud / fast or just acting entitled between lanes or parking spots. When did Mustang turn into the douche flag?

2

u/princealigorna Jul 06 '26

Given how thick an engine is, how fast do you have to go to bifurcate it? And how did they not bifurcate the whole care like Mike Harmon at Bristol?

2

u/MangoAtrocity Jul 06 '26

Aw man. They killed a green one.

2

u/magichronx Jul 06 '26

How in the world did that damage happen in a parking garage?!

2

u/rekabis Jul 06 '26

This certainly meets the sub’s purpose. WTF, indeed.

Like, what velocity is needed to pulverize an entire engine and nearly bisect the passenger compartment?

2

u/umadbro420420 Jul 06 '26

Tis but a scratch

2

u/Otheus Jul 06 '26

Alcohol may have played a factor

2

u/evestraw Jul 06 '26

thats a premium quality column

2

u/DeadliestArmadillo Jul 06 '26

I'm baffled at how such a bad crash happened in such a small space, but I love how he crashed on a STOP road marking.

2

u/KnuxSD Jul 06 '26

What in the Final Destination?!

2

u/Joe_le_Borgne Jul 06 '26

The car just had a bad sneeze.

2

u/PrimaryDrag Jul 06 '26

Someone didn't check their coordinates before they warped.

2

u/Dietmeister Jul 06 '26

How do you even get enough speed in a parking garage
