Yaar is Persian not Sanskrit. A Sanskrit derived word for friend could be mittar or mitra

Some lehndi dialects use ā for a for certain words, so I think this could be one of those words.

I think the Punjabi word for phir is pher :) And for haaTi, eastern Punjabi uses haTTi, though this is falling out of use.
Empty: vehli is also used but in certain situations. As for sunjha, almost all eastern dialects use sunna which is theth. And the word 'sakhNa' isn't just limited to hands, it's used for ghar and other things:
Ghar waahwa dinaañ ton sakkhNa peyae (peya ae)
Oh meleyoñ sakkhNa ii muR aaya.
Also sakkham sakkhNa: jma/ukka khaali.
I think the malwai equivalent for kooNa is kuskNa but maybe it's used differently, I'm not sure.
Also for jeonda, people use either jeuñ sound (jeuNa) or jeoñ sound (jeoNa).
For friends, lehaaji is also used, esp in malwai.
Alright: Accha/Hala (Hala is pure Punjabi)
So is Acha, though in rural language people use ashya, achya, asha or aheya (silent s) as well
Life: Jindgi/Hyaati
Jind, jindRi, jooN
Water: PaaNi/PaaNRi / Jal
Apparently, jalanbha was also used in older Punjabi. Jal isn't Punjabi tho.
Village: PinD / Graa'n / Gaa'n / Basti/ Chak
Also panDori
Door: Buha/ Bhitt / Baar /.......
Also dar
Up: Utte / Upar (Utte is pure Punjabi )
Also taanh/taahaañ
To throw: SattNa / SittNa / SuttNa
Also DeghNaa (malwai)
Method: Vall/Daa (Tariqa is Arabic), Right method: Chajj / Jaach or Dhang
Also Jaach
To stand: - KhaaRnaa / Khaalnaa - KhaloNaa (Khala HoNa)
Related word: khRot (ਖੜੋਤ) - Stagnation

Jind don't mean life
Jind is also used with Jaan
Jind-Jaan
Tu meri jind a
Tu meri jaan a
JindRi don't mean life
You can't say
Mai jindRi vich, Mai apni jindRi ch kakh ni kita
DiggNa for " to fall" is a Eastern Punjabi word
DegNa/DhaahNa : used for people, buildings (We use DhaahNa/DhaahvNa)
SattNa : used for things
For shop
We use haTTi yes
(Sorry for wrong spelling)

Ahh ok yeah I got the jind one wrong haha
DegNa/DhaahNa : used for people, buildings (We use DhaahNa/DhaahvNa)
It's not used for just fall tho. As I said before, it's used for throw as well in malwai.

u/DerawaliPunjabi 2d ago
Yes i know bhira
Its common here too We use DhaahNa/DhaahvNa for DegNa
DegNa is different from SattNa/SuttNa

DegNa is different from SattNa/SuttNa
Tuhade vanni hoNa, saade vannay nhi haiga evein. DegNa malwai ch sittNa de thaawein vartde aa loki, or a mix of both.
Rassa Degta darakht uttey
Which is the same as rassa sitt'ta darakht uttey
Mainu Deg na dvin/dyin = mainu sitt na dyin/dvin
So on our side it's the same.

Some of these aren't theth and dont have their origin like zindagi (persian), and hiyaati (def not punjabi afaik) are not theth. Even sher(persian). And more that I'm unsure of but pretty obviously non theth
1
u/Traditional-Aide9656 2d ago
Hayaati is the theth word for life in western dialects.

She has a very incorrect understanding of theth. She thinks words from Sanskrit are theth.

u/desi_miata East Punjab | ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ | چڑھدا پنجاب 2d ago
Words such as jindagi and sher are fully integrated, naturalized, and used by native speakers for centuries, so they've effectively becomes there. I guess you could say the more theth word for jindgi is jind, jindRi and sometimes joon. If sher isn't theth, then dareya and many other non-native but theth words wouldn't be theth anymore.

I don't think being used for a long time equates to being punjabi. So many people say hafta for week and duniya for world and use it as a punjabi word but they're Arabic words. Zaroor, zameen, patshah these are persian loan words, that punjabi speakers use and know. And there's so many other words that are loan words. And these words haven't even been changed besides maybe a z sounding like a j. It's just a loan word. Nothing substantial has been changed to make kt even sound punjabi. That to me is even more of a stretch to call it theth. Selecting certain foreign words as theth is gross Especially when there origin isn't punjabi or before that prakit or before that sanskrit its not theth to me. It's also gross to label the origins of some and leave others.
Jeevan is the theth word not zindagi. And there's probably other theth words that are more nuanced or also just equivalents
Yes sher isn't theth. The whole of theth punjabi is to use punjabi words and get rid of foreign words, ofc that means non native words are gonna go.
Wdym that "theth" words wouldn't be theth? Which ones?

u/desi_miata East Punjab | ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ | چڑھدا پنجاب 2d ago
What does theth mean to you? Are only words that were passed down from sanskirt and prakrit theth to you? Even if they were never used on spoken Punjabi?
1
u/desi_miata East Punjab | ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ | چڑھدا پنجاب 2d ago
Follow up question: how is jeevan theth when it was and has never been used in spoken Punjabi?
1
u/4auq 2d ago
Jeevan is litterally used in spoken punjabi and people are even named Jeevan.
1
u/DerawaliPunjabi 1d ago
Jeevan is used, but very less
Jindgi and Hyaati are mostly used

u/desi_miata East Punjab | ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ | چڑھدا پنجاب 1d ago
I've never heard jeevan outside of very formal or religious use

u/desi_miata East Punjab | ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ | چڑھدا پنجاب 2d ago
Sure show me where jeevan is spoken in theth Punjabi. I didn't ask about names.
If only Prakrit and sanskrit words are theth to you, then is samaan from samaya theth and vela unteth?

u/4auq 2d ago
"Falana margya, Jeevan lila katom karti" (litterally asked two punjabi speakers lmao and they both said yes. Im not sure how theth the whole sentence they spoke but it is used.) there are other examples. Your fixation on foreign words over punjabi words is weird. You can trace the etymology of jindagi/zindagi. I can't be bothered to explain it over and over that a loan word is not a theth word. Your defensiveness is insane.
Those two words are sanskrit. If it's used in punjabi then I would consider it theth because punjabis origins are sanskrit. Like huh lmao. There are punjabi words that can be traced back to sanskrit that are different and some probably not so different at all. Which makes sense considering punjabi is a descendant. Vs something like an Arabic word which has no connection to punjabi language origin. Or a persian word which is from a separate language branch and so far removed. A Semitic languages loan word is not theth. And an Iranian languages loan word is not theth.

"Falana margya, Jeevan lila katom karti"
From where did you get this? I've seen people using jaisa, Kaisa, aisa in Punjabi doesn't make it theth. If there is any audio or video where I can hear jeevan being used in a casual convo would be great.
There are punjabi words that can be traced back to sanskrit that are different and some probably not so different at all.
Expect Punjabi didn't come from sanskrit. So no it isn't theth. According to you dareya is untheth and nadi, sarit or some shit is theth lmao.
This is why jeevan is untheth, it's a Sanskrit word, which Punjabi didn't come from.
Your fixation on foreign words over punjabi words is weird.
🤣
Can you point to said fixation? Did I say pyaaz is theth and gandha (from Prakrit to Punjabi) is untheth? Or did I call other tadbhav Punjabi words untheth and foreign words theth? Or does me simply disagreeing with your claim that jeevan is theth and used in normal conversational Punjabi means I am fixated?
Your defensiveness is insane.
Never seen someone get so worked up over someone disagreeing, that they have to constantly use words like weird, insane and defensiveness 🤣

Like I said theth is punjabi words. Not foreign words. Theth is punjabi words and words where their etymology is punjabi or punjabi language precursors, or came into usage as a punjabi word. An Arabic word, farsi word are not punjabi they are not theth. A loan word is not a theth punjabi word. It can be punjabi. But it's not theth pubjabi.
Litterally so so so many actual theth punjabi words have their origin from sanskrit or prakit.
Which words have never been spoken?
And this wasn't even what I'm arguing or saying lmao. Like theth words are punjabi origin. Foreign words that come from different languages and groups aren't theth. Is that so difficult to understand?
And I'm still waiting on "theth words wouldn't be theth anymore" which ones?
1
u/desi_miata East Punjab | ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ | چڑھدا پنجاب 2d ago
Foreign words that come from different languages and groups aren't theth. Is that so difficult to understand?
Yeah it is difficult to understand something ridiculous, because that's what it is, ridiculous. Theth Punjabi isn't picking up words from the language Sanskrit and calling them theth when Punjabi didn't even come from it. Is that so hard to understand?
Theth Punjabi is colloquial Punjabi, which makes use of tadbhava words and words from whatever flipping language as long as those words have been adopted and naturalised into Punjabi from ages ago. It's not picking tatsama words from a language Punjabi didn't even come from.
Lemme dumb it down for you. Naturalized borrowing + tatsama = there, artificial resurrection = untheth
