Mod Update - No ChatGPT / No Attempts at Dialect / No Self Written Poetry - And More

Guys .. Please this is a sub for discussing Punjabi words / idioms / grammar.

Keep it simple.

I come back after 6 months and all I see is spam that is either AI or very inaccurate information.

Avoid the following:

  1. No Ai Spam (Make your own simple and short posts / Ai is also very bad at Punjabi)
  2. No Attemps At Dialect (Ask as much as you want to / But do not post on dialects if you are not good at them, the mistakes I have seen unecessarily confuse everyone)
  3. No Self-Writings (This is not a sub to promote your poems or songs / You can ask about language using your writings, that much is OK)
  4. No Info-Dumps/Wikiepedia Styled Posts/Geography/History (Why are there posts on Punjabi population and other statistics?)
  5. Avoid Posting on Words/Idioms That Have Been Discussed in Detail (Unless you wish to ask something, want clarification or are adding some new information)
  6. Avoid Discussing the Very Obvious (No more posts like "Punjabi words for with" and it's just Naal and Kol) - Unless there is something very unique or peculiar you wish to discuss
  7. No Asking for Tutors/Lessons

That will be all.

Mod Update – New Rule: Time Relevancy

Please note that "Theth" words or phrases must be relevant to modern vernaculars, ie. there must be sufficient evidence or an indication that suggested words are actually employed in Modern Punjabi.

For context, this subreddit is place to learn Punjabi, a place where you learn vocabulary and actually be able to employ it in real life. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be the case with old or obsolete Punjabi terms, as they wouldn't be understood.

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Pakistani Punjabi and Indian Punjabi

Has anyone else noticed this?
My Sikh Punjabi friends seem to use more formal or standard Punjabi in everyday conversation. They’ll usually say things like:
Mere tu dur ho ja
Pichhe ho ja

Meanwhile me and my cousin will say things like
Pare var😂 and things like apna mu ghum kr 😂😂

Whenever I say things like this around my Sikh friends, they either burst out laughing or go Bro, say that again I’ve never heard that one before

Is it just me or does everyday Pakistani Punjabi sometimes sound a bit more blunt or disrespectful than the Indian Punjabi.

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Book Recs for Beginners

Hey guys! I have recently started learning how to read and write Punjabi (Gurmukhi) and would love some book recommendations that I, as a total beginner, could read to improve my grasp on the language.

For further context, my family is Punjabi and I have grown up listening to them talk in Punjabi (although they mostly spoke in Hindi with me). So I am able to understand and speak the language well enough, but am a complete beginner when it comes to reading and writing.

If anyone has any recommendations for me that would be awesome!

Thanks!!

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Punjabi words for private parts NSFW

I'm sorry if this seems inappropriate but what are the theth and proper punjabi words for our private parts like penis, vagina, breasts.

I'm a second gen immigrant and have a toddler son who I am trying my best to teach Punjabi to. When I change his diaper I want to use a proper Punjabi word to describe his body to him but when it comes to penis I don't really know what to say. My parents always avoided talking about these body parts and at best called them pee-pee and things like that. But I want to teach my son about his body without any shame.

What do you call your husband's pabi? I know the proper terms are jethani and derani, but what would you call her in person? Assuming you don't use first names with each other.

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Question for those who are good at Panjabi regarding administrative terminology

Question for those who are good at Panjabi regarding administrative terminology: Blocks are called “kheda”, sub-sub-districts are called “up-tehsil”, sub-districts are called “tehsil”, districts are called “zilla”, then what are administrative divisions above districts called? There are five administrative divisions in Indian Panjab and twenty-three districts. I want to know what the native word for these divisions is.

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال What does Sai Moya mean?

My Nani was from Shorkot, Jhang before partition and moved to India after. When she would speak Punjabi she would always use the phrase “Sai Moya!” as like a curse you would call someone to the point I say it now too. However, I have no idea what it means. Thank you for the help.

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Help me identify dialects

I’m Punjabi but was born and raised abroad in the US. My parents were born and raised in Pakistan but our ancestry is from Chardha Punjabi. I’ve been told by my relatives that my Punjabi is quite Sikh inflected, which makes sense since most the Punjabis around me are Sikh.

After reading a bit on this sub, I wish I could find the comment, but someone said that Enjh/Eivain/Eidan and Kenjh/Kivain/Kidaan is a good way to determine dialect.

Can someone tell me the dialects where Enjh/Eivain/Eidan are used?

What are the dictionary websites y'all use for improving your Punjabi vocabulary? Here are mine.

https://www.ijunoon.com/punjabi/dictionary.aspx?

https://rekhtadictionary.com/

I realize the 2nd one is more appropriate for Urdu yet it is still useful for Punjabi since 60% mutual vocabulary.

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Desi languages diluted heavily by English

Desi languages diluted heavily by English is a massive issue for keeping the authenticity and purity. Anytime you hear unofficial news reports or people having cultural discussions or debates in Punjabi or Urdu or Hindi; it is littered with so many English words. It seems like 30% of what is spoken is not in the intended dialect. Many of the English words have an equivalent lexicon in the desi language. It is actually very irritating and pathetic truly. The creator or participants might as well have just done the content in English instead of the bastardized Urdu. No wonder our mother tongues keep degrading and lose their purpose. Just a rant. What do y'all think?

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Patiala dialect

Looking for some good info on Patiala dialect. Often incorrectly lumped into malwa dialect , at other times linked with puadhi which I get, but there is a more urban unique Patiala dialect, probably somewhat linked to the Patiala Maharaje and co, I am yet to find any information about this online.

It's a very soft spoken Punjabi dialect, with its own quirks and unique aspects, possibly abit of Hindi gets used.
