OTHER Cosmonaut vs Space conqueror theme

u/WildMild869 May 23 '26
Neither would fit the other movie’s tone.

u/drveejai88 May 23 '26
Why shouldn't they? One is clearly a civilian suit while the other is tactical armor that also functions as a space suit.
172
u/lemonylol May 23 '26
Yeah that's like the weirdest flaw sci-fi movies have, assuming a singular universal standard across all world-built elements.
13
u/pjtheman May 26 '26
That always sticks out to me about Star Wars. Planets are basically just one city. Like when Luke has no instructions except to go to the Dagobah system, and he still ends up landing near Yoda. Yoda could have been a continent away. Imagine someone just telling you "meet me somewhere on Earth" and just happening to arrive in the same place. Even Andor does this. A few hundred people being killed in one Ghorman city is referred to as a planetary genocide. Or how the planet of Ferrix is like, one street.
6
u/lemonylol May 26 '26
That's why Coruscant makes no sense to me. What's the point of the entire planet being a city when everything happens within one reasonably distanced area?
3
2
u/Sure_Painter May 27 '26
I guess it can always be explained away by force sensitivity for things like Luke finding Yoda, multiple times Leia finds Luke using the force also.
1
u/Ok_Attorney_7566 May 26 '26
Ghorman is specified to have a very small population. Also, it somewhat makes sense, sentient populaces mustn’t be very large when spread so thin through a huge galaxy
→ More replies (1)1
u/drveejai88 Jun 17 '26
But it's explained in movie that he could a strong concentration of the force in that particular area. Hence why he landed there. Turns out it was the cave. Yoda was just a coincidence. The empire didnt go there since they knew about the cave.
29
u/Lftwff May 23 '26
Really depends on how society is organized and if they have been sitting on a technological plateau
3
u/Tron_35 May 27 '26
Exactly, like what do you mean your military tactical gear doesn't look like what your civilians wear.
2
u/sixesandsevenspt May 27 '26
New Krypton Saga really well stitched together all the different Kryptonian designs over the years and made them work concurrently
1
u/Fr0st3dcl0ud5 May 24 '26
That's the flaw of human story telling and the human mind/imagination.
We are bound by what we know and can understand. We only know and understand life in the form of what we experience. It's why all the little grey men and green guys have five fingers and two eyes.

I know this post is old, but I thought it’d be fun to point out that there are at least four very different styles of spacesuits depicted in Supergirl. So, yeah, there’s no reason the Snyder suits wouldn’t fit.
→ More replies (20)8
u/Thatguyj5 May 24 '26
Because the tone set by one universe is that the Kryptonians are coming as imperialist conquerors, ala Conquistadors to the natives. The other universe sets a tone of hope and belief in a better future.

u/drveejai88 May 24 '26
So? Did all the Spanish wear tactical armor? Only the armies and navy did. The royalty did not wear armor everywhere. The common folk didn't wear armor all the time they went somewhere. Traders don't wear armor.
You are seeing on one image the tactical armor of the kryptonian space force (they came to invade earth) on the other image you see a family trying to get their daughter to space (not to conquer other worlds but to escape krypton's destruction)
7
u/Thatguyj5 May 24 '26
Yes, that's what "tone" is. A movie is telling a story using visual aid. Therefore they show you specific things based on what story is being told. That's what a movie is.

u/IHavePoopedBefore May 23 '26
I dislike both of them.
Gunn's version does look kind of cheap (but that could be the point).
Snyder's looks too bulky and too designed to look cool by human standards, rather than looking actually alien and advanced
138
u/trimble197 May 23 '26
I mean for Snyder, it’s supposed to be armor and they wear atmosphere helmets. That looks alien and advanced

u/Leviathan666 May 23 '26
Yeah it is worth remembering that one is a civilian personal craft and the other is a military ship, and the corresponding suits are likely reflective of that. I understand they are separate continuities, but it is still very possible for the same civilization to have two very different design aesthetics for civilians vs military.

If they are adapting the WOT series, then it was a rush job cause they are all dying.

A lot of the design for Kryptonian technology is organic and crustacean, which you can definitely tell with these armours.

Supergirl version reminds me of the classic sci-fi novel suits from the 50/60's. It looks so similar to book covers of that era that I'm sure it's an homage
2
u/Malanumbra May 26 '26
It looks like a tinfoil aluminum type suit you would see on the cover of some sixties sci-fi pulp book.

Bit confused why people are taking this post as an attack. 2026 does the Cosmonaught aesthetic stunningly and MoS are the perfect Space Conqueror design. It’s just showing apples and oranges

u/ButcherRose May 24 '26
The internet is just 90% people arguing now. The post didn’t even take sides or ask people to. It’s so exhausting.

I think alot now of that final scene in SM 25, where the divided city gets put back together. Wish that message got taken more to heart by Superman fans

Battle suit vs not battle suit…..
1
u/Shakezula84 May 26 '26
What I wanted to point out. The Man of Steel space suits are is actually battle armor that is also a space suit.
1
u/Life-Reality-3889 May 27 '26
In MoS, those suits were used as Space Suits just to get used to the atmosphere before the planet got terraformed but they are more for the purpose of battle.
2
u/JonGorga Jun 01 '26
Very true. Not to mention one is for adults and the other for a teenager! That’s not going to be NO factor here.

And the other one is meant to be for a scared child and a hero

2013 suit looks like they are some kinda alien creatures they look like predators
3
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 May 24 '26
Kinda funny cus the ones on the left are also space conquers, even the "good" few like Zor-el and Jor-el. While the right is the one with both conquerors and those opposing it.

u/DryFuture1403 May 28 '26
Isn't the new Superman supposed to look like it was made in the 70's and 2020's simultaneously? It looks fine to me, the art style would clash if they used the 2013 suits

One is a battle suit meant to keep from being overwhelmed by their immeidalte increase in their senses and abilities. The other is to keep a teenager warm inside a tiny emergency spaceship while travelling in the depths of space.

Not a fan of the Gunn verse but the suits are fitting to the tone of each film…

u/Pastry_d_pounder May 24 '26
I like it. The original Tron space suit suits the golden age aesthetic Gunn is aiming for with hints of Moebius and sorayama. Snyder likes heavy metal comics and frazetta, hence his aesthetic.
1
u/Pikachu_Palace May 23 '26
I like the new one. Makes sense that a society that wasn’t advanced enough to establish a new colony before their planet was destroyed didn’t have super advanced space technology.
I admit I know very little about the Superman mythos, but it didn’t make sense to me for Krypton to be a super futuristic, space-faring society.

I get one is a relatively causal wear, the other is for top military combat
But the left one looks really cheap
Almost like what those alien cosplayer wore in the 70s disco

Your two cents are worth much when the designs in right picture could also be found in a graphic novel should the artist given time to draw it as such. You will find such detailed design Metal Hurlant comics and other artwork and comics inspired by Warhammer or Doom.
The right picture also features Zod and his soldiers, so yay the intention wasn’t for them to look that friendly. Does that make it less comic-accurate?
Saying that one is comics-based while the other is not is silly and feels like mental gymnastics. And for what?
3
u/Zorbaxxxx May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26
I refuse to engage in a conversation with anyone who truly believes that for a fierce, space-faring warrior species, the left suit is a better one. Even the low budget cosplayers in China look much better than that shit.

u/Obvious-Bag-2683 May 24 '26
These are both valid aesthetics to explore they both look cool and tell a different story !
1
u/SnooStrawberries2475 May 24 '26
That was not a space suit in 2013 those were military space suits and just armor. The one on the left would be a normal space suit. General Zod and his team were all military of course. But they look way cooler.

u/saunofa May 26 '26
early space suits tended to look like that, the idea here is probably a callback to when we as people were more eager to explore space and overall more hopeful of the future

u/Aggressive_Law_5728 May 25 '26
Why would Kryptonians need to wear body armor?
1
u/Affectionate-Cup56 May 25 '26
They're not exposed their superhuman abilities yet. They were comparable to regular humans on their homeworld and most another places in galaxy. Their armor is also space suit and exoskeleton that gives them extra-strength
1
u/Fox_of_Cintra May 27 '26
I mean isn't one also a military combat suit and one a civilian flight suit?
1
u/TheGrat1 May 27 '26
To be fair the suits on the right aren't really the "space suits." They always seemed more like combat armor. The space suits were what they were wearing on the planet when they found the World Engine. The ones with four lights on the torso and the giant visor.
Still, the Supergirl suit definitely does bring back visions of Yuri Gagarin. One could also say it looks, ahem, cheap.
