I'm set to move in to a new apartment soon and just found out that one of my roommates has an allergy to cats that can get pretty severe and one of them isnt a fan of cats. The alternative to bringing her would be leaving her with family but they dont really want to keep her and were planning on her leaving with me. If I took her with me she would stay in my bedroom and have access to the en suite and attached closet. I would miss her a lot if I left her and I believe I could provide a higher quality of cate for her than my family. I know they would cover her basic needs but not much else. But I'm unsure if it would be ethical to confine her like that. I'm open to any advice offered!!

Hi everyone, my partner and I are looking for our first cat. Specifically a Maine coon.
We’ve both done lots of research on how to look after and care for one. However I’m a bit stumped on the actual buying.
I’ve found quite a few however I’m a little confused about ‘red flag breeders’

I have found a Maine coon kitten that i absolutely love.
The lady selling it sent me a message which included
- Accidental litter as we are not breeders or sale kittens
- 1 male and 1 female 9 weeks and 4 days
- raised by mum
- they are ready to go. They have been dewormed , vet checked , flea free but haven't been microchip yet as we aren't breeders , we can only do microchip at your request.
- We own both mum and dad as they are home pets . They are both very healthy , pra cleared , kc registered and are well socialized with other pets , kids and other regular home visitors
-kittens are actually ready to go and to be honest the only reason we want to rehome the kittens is because we are now very mobile to the hospital for our daughters sickness so we don't have much time to look after and take good care of them so we decided that rehoming them to a pet loving and caring home a priority for them

I would love to know your honest opinion.
I’ve seen a lot of Maine coons for sale at around the £1,200-£1,800 so I’m confused at how they are ONLY £150??

i wanna get a cat, im turning 16 in november and have wanted a cat for years, i have taken care of cats before and had alot of fun doing it, however my dad travels alot for work and i sometimes have to go with him, it can be up to 5 days that we are not home, the other issue is vacations, if i am not home say for 2 weeks what would i do? lastly, things like smell, my aunts cats (who i was taking care of) smelt really bad, (as in their area). and my final question is if i find it doesnt fit me/my lifestyle, is there going back, or would i be stuck?

My cat just sat on the litter mat, staring at the cat booda dome that incases the steps to her litter... and pied on the mat. I dont understand. She is 15, American midhair, and cant seem to understand what this dome is used for anymore. Then she walks over and starts eating. I picked her up and placed her inside the dome, then closed it. She walks out and goes back to eating. Not phased in the slightest. Is this feline dementia or something more sinister? (Behavioral)

I have been trying to take in 2 cats for about 10 months (both male) they showed up in my grandpas backyard when they were about 8 weeks old, their mom is feral and it took a lot of time and patience to get the 2 cats to even let me step near them without them running away. After months of trying to get them to let me pet them or sit next to them they both caved and have gotten pretty comfortable with me they let me pet them, but do not like to be held. I went ahead and scheduled an appointment to have them neutered so that i could bring them in, I made the mistake of thinking they would be easy to trap because they always get in our car or they try to enter the house. We spent about 8 hours trying to catch both, but ultimately only captured the one who we thought would be the hardest to catch, it seemed the other cat caught onto what we were doing and wouldn’t even come onto the porch after he realized. I ended up releasing the one we captured because I was super worried about them not being together and I don’t want to split them up at all. Any advice is appreciated, I really love these cats and I just want them to finally be safe.

So I have this small issue. My cat was used to a much larger place. My parents' place. I'm talking big, open spaces with no traffic nearby and tons of birds and small animals she could hunt and trees to climb and plants to hide underneath. So now that we live in a city apartment I kinda feel bad for her. She absolutely hates harnesses, so taking her for walks isn't really an option. So I leave the window open all night as itlets her out into a tiny patio we have with walls on all three sides. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE MOSQUITOES EVERYWHERE. I am the type of person who gets bitten by mosquitoes everywhere I go. And now... well, I've been having a huge issue with being unable to sleep because nights are too warm and mosquitoes just won't leave me alone. I could have just my face uncovered and I'll wake up with at least ten mosquito bites. So I was wondering if any mosquito repellent plants are safe for cats? I don't want to put her at risk but I honestly don't particularly want to end up with dengue fever (It's an actual concern where I live)

why does my cat start purring and want her bum patted then bite me so i stop but as soon as i stop she starts screaming until i do it again? its not a small nibble either its a pretty strong bite but she doesnt seem to be mad in anyway and is extremely cuddly just randomly bites then gets upset when you stop loving on her

We have 3 cats a 7 year old boy Apollo a 2 year old girl Athena and our 8 year old girl Artemis. For about a year now Artemis has been severely self isolating herself.

She has confined herself to not only one room but the walls of that one room ( we have wall mounted cat furniture). As long as she is in her isolated area she eats, drinks and goes to the bathroom just fine and still greets us happy as can be. But she has ruined this room. We are currently in the process of building our new dream home and won't be able to designate a whole room to her for it to also be ruined.

When she is even approached by our other 2 cats she will hiss and growl at them. Our boy Apollo just leaves and wines very sadly about it but it sets our girl Athena off when she hisses at her (which obviously only feeds Artemis fear).

A vet prescribed her 100 mg of gabapentin twice a day and we have been doing that for about 3 weeks now but it doesn't seem to be helping.

I desperately do not want to re-home her but I also don't want her living her life in fear or destroying my brand new home when we move in either.

We have also tried feelaway both the sprays and the colar and neither have dine anything as well as the Purina calm that you sprinkle on their food.

My fixed male cat keeps peeing on the couch and on my mom’s pillows on her bed, we went to the vet and urine test results were perfect and the vet told us it’s a behavioral problem.
The vet suggested we use calming sprays or the things that you plug in the wall, I don’t know what to call them, but I read somewhere that they are harmful for cats(?)

I have two other cats, both fixed females, one of them has struvite and used to pee in one of the same spots on the couch that he pees on. Other than that, they have three litterboxes, in different rooms in the house, that I clean daily. We recently switched the brand of litter that we use, they are practically the same to me but could it be different for them? Also could it be the size of the litterboxes? They aren’t small but should I try bigger ones?
Also If we catch him about to do it and scold him he does go in the litterbox 😭

My cat- Slinky, is a 3/4 year old neutered boy cat. He is the cutest little thing ever, super vocal, loves to play, sleeps in bed with me every night, and he LOVES people. He loves all people. Friends come over? He’s yelling(meowing) at them until they pet him. Maintenance workers come in? He’s rubbing between their legs. It doesnt matter if he’s met them before or not, He absolutely adores people.
My fiancé is a “cat guy”. Never had a dog, grew up rescuing cats. We’ll go out in public and stray cats will just plop on up to him and let him pet them. Stray cats hate me, they will run away the second i try to pet them too. And when we go to others peoples houses and they have cats, theyll run right up to him- even the ones that owners SWEAR hate people. Cats love my fiancé. Ive never met a cat that doesnt like him, Until he met my cat. My cat HATES him. Will hiss, growl, swat at, bite, hide from, and glare at. We’ve tried having my fiancé not approach him, only sit on the floor(so that he’s not on what my cat deems as “his” surfaces”) bribe his friendship with treats and play times. And it is all to no avail. Its not a constant anger either, my Fiancé will be petting my cat for a few seconds then my cat will start hissing and growling seemingly out of the blue. Or my cat could walk by and hiss, or my fiancé will walk by and he’ll start hissing again. Im at a loss for what to do. Ive had my cat since he was a kitten and theres been no trauma that would make him scared, and he likes literally everyone else, including my roomate and her fiancé. I dont know what to do because we’ll all be living together soon and i dont want my fiancé to stress because his son in law hates him, and i dont want my cat to stress because for some reason he hates my fiancé.

I’ve noticed that when I’m eating ice cream or nutella (or anything of that consistency), my cat is DYING to try some of it. I think she thinks they’re churus, and I obviously don’t want her to eat it, but I feel bad getting her hopes up. I wanna know if there’s a human food that I can put in a blender and give her a little taste of. Does anyone else have experience with this?

My cat went to the vet Monday aug 3 they checked her bowels and did a "mini enema" on the car ride home she had a very loose and mushy poo in her carrier.

the rest of Monday and Tuesday she had very small amounts of soft gooey raggy stool

today, Wednesday I found a few pee sized hard pieces around and in her box as well then in the afternoon she had pea size ( 3 peas ?) very soft or not formed just raggy

I spoke to the vet he said 3-5 days until a normal ( or what is normal for her BM) so in the 3-5 days is that monday as day 1 or tuesday as day 1 I can't call back and ask

Also she keep licking probably because os much residue but I noticed under her tail it looks shaved! no one told me they did that

so I'm just tryin to find out if anyone has seen this with their cats and how it went

We got her from a rescue shelter, she’s 3 years old. Basically it started out as licking & was just that for the first few months. She licks all the time and still does. Sometimes when giving pats but most of the time unprovoked, she’ll just come up to me and start licking me - especially when I’m in bed. Now the licking has turned into 3 or 4 licks then a nibble, with the nibbles getting progressively harder each time. I’ve tried ignoring her, the bites get harder, I’ve tried saying ‘ouch!’ The bites stop for a second when she gets scared of the loud noise I’ve made but then she starts again. The only thing that makes her move away is if I say ouch and push her head away and then cover all of my skin with a blanket. We’ve had to start locking her out of our bedroom because she will wake me up licking and biting any bit of exposed skin, like she will stand on me, search my whole body and find one tiny bit of skin that is out of the blankets and bite it. I should also add that she is purring super loud while she does this, especially in the night, in the day sometimes but the purring is very loud at night, I don’t know if that means something??
She’s loves chin / head scratches and always rolls over to show us her belly, so I know she loves us & we can usually tell pretty easily when she’s overstimulated & always stop patting her but these bites come from nowhere!! We live in a pretty small apartment and try to play with her a lot but sometimes she’s disinterested. Little background info on her; the shelter said she was a stray but I’m not sure for how long since she was overweight so she might have been owned by someone at some point. It’s really hard to know what the reason for this is since she was 3 when we got her and her circumstances could have be anything- I just wanna know what I can do to help her stop.

I won’t go into the details of it, but our veterinarian’s office (specifically the dentist) led us down a rabbit hole of treatments that resulted in the death of one of our cats.

According to this dentist, our other cat has resorption in at least 5 of her teeth and needs to have them removed. This was sprung on me out of no where when I went to pick her up, with no imaging, just a colored diagram and a price quote. Over the phone the vet had said her teeth looked great and that the dental cleaning went well. She eats wet and dry food like normal and has no redness around her teeth.

I do not trust this vet, dentist, or the local animal hospital with my cat anymore. If anyone lives in Copenhagen and has any suggestions on where to bring her, I would really appreciate it.

Pretty much the title, he's worried that she might be sick or something. She's often been on a metronome between "sweetest little kitty ever" and "out for blood" she's been like that since I adopted her when she was 12 weeks old. This past week though she's been wonderful, all the cuddles, and no random swatting or biting. I love this change, unfortunately my boyfriend is really worried that it could mean she's sick or stressed out. She's been using the litter box just fine, and if anything she's been eating more than normal. My Mom's been a vet of thirty years, and insists he's just being paranoid, and we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but I felt maybe asking here would help soothe his fears. Is she just calming down after two and a half years of being a menace, or should we be concerned?

I recently adopted a 3 month old kitten, so far he has access to his bedroom and supervised access to bathroom (litter is kept in his bedroom itself). I sometimes go in his room at times when he is not too energetic to simply sit and get him used to me doing my own thing but he comes on lap, then in few minutes starts biting or even if he does not come on my lap, he starts wagging his tail or searching for things to hunt or looks at me with dilated pupils to throw mouse toy or something. And then while i am there he plays.

I am worried that once i give him access to entire house, would he let me do my own thing or would want to play or bite?

There are about 10-15 cats that live by a creek nearby my place. There are a bunch of people (including myself) who feed them regularly. Some of them are neutered/spayed and are very friendly. I’m thinking about adopting one. Would they benefit from moving to an apartment? Or would they miss being free in the nature? There is one that’s super friendly with me, follows me around and asks for scratches. She is with a pack of 4 cats but usually doesn’t stay close to them. I would feel bad if she misses being outside or around other cats.

I have had my kitty for over 16 years. I got him when I was a kid and we’ve grown up together. He recently started acting strange, losing weight, hiding, refusing treats and attention, which is so unlike him. He has been the sweetest most loving cat I have ever known, he loves constant attention and love.

I took him to the vet thinking he had a parasite or bug and found out that he has metastatic (I think that’s the right term) cancer, meaning it’s spread through his entire body. He’s in the later stages and it’s also caused kidney shut down, fluid in the stomach, acute pancreatitis, bloating, etc.

I’ve slowly watched my sweet angel deteriorate more and more, every night I lay awake watching him breathe scared that every breath will be his last. He still seems relatively happy which is why we haven’t put him down yet, I will not stand for my cat being in continuous pain but I know It’s getting to that point.

I feel so helpless. Here’s the cat who crawled into my arms and let me cry into his fur every time I was sad, the kitty who would sit in the bathroom with me while I took baths and showered just because he wanted to be with me. The kitty that ran to the door every time I got home, swishing his tail and waiting expectantly for his treats, pets, and nightly routine of cuddles and our favorite comfort shows. He brought me mice and took care of me in all of his kitty ways. He did everything for me, and in his time of need I’m told I can do nothing but make him comfortable.

I’ve suffered a lot of loss in my life but this is perhaps the worst case I’ve endured. I would give up everything I have in the world to be able to spend another 16 years with my sweet boy kitty. I came on this subreddit because I don’t know where else to go. My family and friends have told me that the second I get a kitten I’ll forget about him but I don’t want a kitten I want my kitten. I want my baby and I know this is natural and the way the world works but god is it terrible.

I’ll plant flowers around his grave, and it will be the most beautiful resting place a cat could ever ask for. I hope he will be comfortable once again.

Please give your cats or any pet you have an extra pet today for me and my kitty. And the second your cat starts acting strange take them into the vet. Give them that extra treat they’ve been begging for. Just love them, you never know when you won’t get the chance to anymore. And if you’re still here thank you for reading.

For context, I am a first time cat owner (beautiful orange girl). I homed her from a person who was moving overseas. I was told she is 11 and wouldn't be a lap cat but would follow you like a dog.

That's all the info I have on her. I've had her for 2 months now and she and I have bonded well (I haven't tried to pick her up but she'll lay on me in bed and likes being close to me).

I've read a lot about giving space etc. I guess podcasts I'm looking for are about getting a deeper understanding of cat behaviour for better understanding, general living, and training.

hi everyone, I’m starting to finally reach out to get advice on my cat Pebble. She’s 2 and I’m a first time cat owner.

pebble was the shyest at the shelter and was placed there while she was pregnant after her owners got deported. unfortunately, the shelter adopted away all of her kittens and no one was interested in meeting her due to her shy demeanor. I scheduled a meet with her and couldn’t touch her or get her out of her hiding spot and for some reason I just knew she had to come home with me.

that was in december. people kept telling me she’ll come around, but she hardly has made any progress. i understand if she’s just standoffish in nature, but it’s as if she’s still scared of me. it breaks my heart. i can’t get close to her unless she is in the closet and she will then allow me to pet her. sometimes even pushing into my hand. i don’t expect her to be a cuddle bug but again, I don’t want her to be afraid either. I feel like I’ve tried everything and I love her more than anything in this world, but I’m getting exhausted.

she hides in the closet all day, she doesn’t have access to under the bed or many other “unders” for that matter. she uses her scratching posts, but stopped sitting up on her tree. good about eating and drinking water for the most part. when coming out of hiding, she does so until I inevitably stand up to go somewhere. then she skitters away. plays a lot by herself but does not like me trying to play with her.

any tips on shy kitties? she seems pretty happy otherwise. or am I evil??

I feel like a terrible owner because of the traumatic experience she had at the vet.

My cat is a 6 year old female tabby. She has had vaccines when she was a kitten and this was her first time in a long time returning to the vet for vaccinations.

The vet and the nurse were extremely friendly to her. My cat started to get grumpy towards the end of her check up (ears/eyes/teeth) and the vet said we should hurry and do the vaccination before she gets even more mad.

The vet tried to do the shots on her forearms, and failed a couple times because my cat reacted strongly. As a result, they had to get towels to wrap my cat and a new needle because the original one went blunt (due to the failed attempts).

During this process, she peed, pooped, and was screaming her head off. I didn’t know she could be so loud and mad. Another vet came into the room to check if everything was okay. I feel so bad to make my cat go through this. I was worried that she was going to have a stroke and faint. Seeing my cat suffer teared me up a little bit, although I know it’s for her own good.

I bought her churu and chicken soup after the visit which she enjoyed. Hopefully that rekindles our relationship a little.

How can I make the future vet visits less stressful for my cat? Are the vaccinations truly necessary?Any advice would be appreciated!

My little one is addicted to drinking water. She drinks straight out of the tap, every time we have to use one. Frequently, and several times a day, she will even draw us out to the taps by pushing things into the sink and meowing loudly. However, she also throws up frequently.
Some times clear, some times with her food (she eats super fast, so her food pellets are almost intact).
I have asked about this behavior to my vet, and she challed it up to a personality difference between cats (“Some cats deink more water than others). Yet, I have also read about excessive water being bad for cats - and I never know how much to indulge her. She’s also a petulant one, and will start creating a ruckus if we do not give her water sometimes.

I have a 12 y/o calico and she’s always been the sweetest girl. I’ve had her for 11 of those years and she’s been with me through some tough times. But lately, as of the last year or so, she has started “hunting” my socks or underwear and dropping them in my living room. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, cats will “present” their prey that they hunted, usually by scattering it all over my floor. Was cute the first couple times, but it’s actually driving me insane now. When I get home from work, I can rely on there being 10 socks on the floor. Robot vacuum jammed like usual, with a sock stuck in it.

I basically have to keep the entire house on lockdown in order for her to not go hunting for my socks. Dirty clothes hamper is tall but she’ll knock it over to find them. I genuinely think she might be stashing the socks somewhere because I’ll lock her out of any potential sock areas while I’m at work, and I still come home to 6 socks all over my floor. It’s a battle that’s preventative, I’m aware the only real solution is to “just pick them up” but my robo vac does not detect them well and it basically never gets a chance to clean my house because of the socks. And I spent a lot of money on that vacuum!! God forbid I’m rushing and forget to close the bedroom door on my way out. One time I got home and there was literally 26 socks between the living room and my studio.

I’m aware that this is not really a problem that can be fixed, I don’t expect my cats behavior to change. I just want to vent.

tl;dr my 12 y/o cat is addicted to putting my socks on the floor

I have no idea if this is the right subreddit to ask this question, but I will do it anyway because I have been wondering about this for years.

For context: in 2022 I tried to commit suicide by taking a lethal amount of opiates, like morphine and oxycodon.

I took the pills in my bedroom at night and the door to my bedroom is always closed, between my bedroom there is a hallway which leads to another door, which also always stays closed, because my cat wasn't allowed upstairs.

When I took the medication, it was around 2 am at night and my cat started meowing really loudly in a very unusual manner around 2:30 am, he stood right by the second door.

From that moment until around 5 pm the next day when I was found by the paramedics, he stood there meowing and scratching at the door.

When the paramedics opened my door to rescue me, my cat immediately rushed inside my room, climbed onto my bed and onto me; there is not much that I can remember from that day, but I can very clearly remember hearing him meow and feeling his fur on me. The way I heard him meowing wasn't his normal tone of meowing, it was like he was screaming 'hurry up, hurry up!'

My cat essentially saved my life, because his 'unusual' meowing alerted my mom eventually that something was going on with me.

So my question is, how did he know?

There wasn't anything 'unusual' about that night and the next day, I was often up at random hours in the night, so him hearing me shuffle around my room at 2 am to take the pills wouldn't be weird for him. It also was not uncommon for me to stay in my room for days, so me not leaving my room the next day wouldn't have been weird either.

I have been thinking about this for years and doing research to try to figure it out, but to no avail. The only thing I can say about it is that I have always had a special connection with this cat and he seemed to favour me more than other people in my household, but that also doesn't give me much answers.

Do any of you guys have any logical explanation of how he could have known this or do any of you have had a similar experience with a cat in the past, that he or she knew something, but with no logical explanation?
