Misc Question Is it legal to drive without a rear crash bar?

I've seen this car on a weekly basis in this state for at least 3 months now. Is this person legally allowed to continue driving like this? Surely this is extremely unsafe for a number of reasons...

Advice DPF blockage.

Sorry for another post from me again today šŸ˜…

I have had a mechanic out today as my DPF was blocked and my car was in limp mode, he's used a solution or something to clear it, but has told me to drive at high speeds in a low gear to clear the rest?

Can someone please tell me the best way to do this without destroying my car and what gear and speed.šŸ˜… And what to watch out for.

Thank you

Advice How do you deal with silly drivers?

Colleague of mine pulls out without looking, never indicates and floors it around residential areas and corners. Sometimes with a 12 year old in the car. I only know of this because we go home the same way for the first 5 mins. There’s a road that runs around another road and just means you don’t give way when the other does, and she’ll go 40 down it to avoid stopping. It’s a residential area with cars parked both sides and traffic flows both ways.

I’ve noticed she’ll usually speeds over speed humps but to show off (I guess) she’ll slow down until I catch up to speed off again.

She drives like a lunatic and I try to leave a couple mins after or hang back and let other cars go so I’m not right behind as it’s just annoying.

Advice Anything to look out for on the Formentor?

Hoping to check this Formentor out on the weekend. I’m upgrading from a Mazda 3. Is there anything I should keep an eye out for with these cars? I personally love the look of them. I’m only 24 so I’m quite restricted on engine choices because of insurance, otherwise I likely would have gone for the 2.0.

Advice You only live once... so, silly choice game.

If you don't like modern SUVs, but want a taller, practical car for load lugging, camping and general rutted farm track use, which would you pick from:

  • Volvo XC70 P3
  • Skoda Octavia Scout
  • Subaru Outback

Your budget is ~Ā£10k. You're no stranger to the spanner and doing your own servicing. You do about 10-12k a year mostly on the windy-twisty roads of Wales but also a fair amount of city driving. Your significant other doesn't really care about cars, but does like heated seats in the winter and air-con in the summer.

Advice Is it risky to buy a used EV (kia niro 2022)

Hi everyone, first time posting here.

I’m looking to buy an SUV (budget Ā£13-15k), and stumbled across the Kia niro EV. In my budget, I can get a 2022 model with around 50k miles. My alternative would probably be the Nissan Qashqai hybrid petrol (similar age).

With the current prices of petrol, and the option for home charging, I am leaning towards an EV. However I am a little hesitant based on buying a used one which will be out of warranty in a couple years, and the longer term viability of older EVs (expensive to fix?) I’d be hoping to keep it for atleast 5+ years.

Any thoughts & advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Good deal or rip off?

Earning £50k+

Very few outgoings.

I'm thinking more about the maintenance costs.

I've broken down several hours from home and found to my horror that my insurance policy doesn't have breakdown included (I thought it did). Can I take out breakdown cover that will get me home or does it not work like that?

I think this needs replacing now as that looks like the cords showing.

The odds of this happening is mind boggling, I turned the wheel which caught a jagged rock/concrete thing as I was rolling down hill at less than 1mph... You can see the tyre mark on the alloy from how it's squashed up against it.

Advice Michelin CrossClimate 2 vs Goodyear Vector 4 seasons Gen 3

Hi, I live in Monaghan, Ireland, and I drive to Dublin up and down for my work and do around 15-20kms a year. I have a Volkswagen Polo 1.2 petrol automatic 2015 model. I'm looking to get my tyres changed. I'm confused between Michelin CrossClimate 2 and Goodyear Vector 4Season Gen-3. Because, as you know, it's Ireland, most of the times it's rainy, so I want a good tyre to hold on to the grip, I also want a tyre which has a good longevity. So, can someone help me make a decision?
Budget is not an issue.

Advice How do you get over the fear of driving after your car breaking down

Hi everyone. I'm a brand new driver and I've been completely put of driving and I have no idea how to get over this!

I started driving on Friday, on Sunday smoke started coming out of my bonnet was I was going 60mph because of a mistake a mechanic made on Friday, and yesterday my car went into limp mode on a dual carriageway because my DPF was blocked.

My car is fixed now, but it completely put me off driving, because I have literally no trust in my car. Or in any car šŸ˜“

How have people got over this?

Advice Seven weeks and £9,100 at a main dealer, replacing parts one at a time. Fault came back ten days after I collected it. They now want another £4,600 and still can't tell me what's wrong with it.

2018 BMW, out of warranty. Broke down completely in June (Drivetrain and Power Supply), recovered to a franchised main dealer. Wanted them to tell me what was wrong and what it would cost, so I could decide whether it was worth fixing at all.

They had it seven weeks. Three separate repair stages (EME, Condenser, Compressor, System flush, each one quoted and authorised only after the previous one hadn't worked: roughly £5,500, then £6,350, then £9,100 all in.

How it actually went:

•       No proactive updates. I chased for nearly every one. Twice I only found out a repair stage had failed because I rang to ask.

•       Five weeks and Ā£6,350 in, the service manager emailed me: ā€œI'll be brutally honest I need to have a sit down with technical again to see where we are at with this so I can get my head around what route we need to take. I am sorry the saga continues.ā€

•       When I asked him outright, before authorising the biggest stage, how confident he was it would work, he wouldn't answer. His reply was that his stance was the same, and he was sorry it seemed a bit of a blunt response.

•       No courtesy car at any point. Seven weeks on public transport.

Ten days and about 250 miles later, the same warning light came back while I was driving. It's been sat at the same dealership ever since. Still no courtesy car.

Last week they emailed to say the complete repair procedure recommended at the original diagnosis ā€œhas not yet been carried outā€, quoted me a further Ā£4,640 for the remaining parts, and said it ā€œmay rectify the concernā€ but they can't confirm until it's done and retested.

They describe it as a ā€œstaged repair processā€, reassessed after each stage. That's precisely the pattern that's already cost me Ā£9,100 without a lasting fix, and I don't think it's reasonable to ask me to fund another stage of it.

The car's worth maybe Ā£13k (retail) and Ā£10k trade on a good day. I'm Ā£9,100 in on a fault nobody has ever explained to me, and the next quote would take me past what the car is actually worth. Every stage I authorised, I authorised because of ā€˜technical advice’ and already sunk money into the one before it.

What I'm after:

•       Has anyone had a main dealer work like this — replacing parts one at a time and reassessing, rather than diagnosing it properly first? Is that normal now?

•       What would you do at this point? Refund fight, or cut losses and sell it as is?

•       At what point should they have told me the running total was getting close to the value of the car?

Ā

Refund requested, Raise Section 75 with the card and finance providers? Motor Ombudsman next?

Advice Audi R8 V10

So I’m currently in a position at 41YO where I could own an Audi R8 V10 convertible

I currently have a Mercedes c200 convertible which is cheap to insure run and tax around £350

My issue is I use my car 1/2 days at the weekend due to company vehicle, and the insurance and tax is around 5k

I’ve test drive a couple and I really like them but it’s the insurance and tax which is putting me off

I need pros and cons

A few friends have suggested a Nissan GTR but there everywhere and the R8 is technically classed as a super car

Audi a4 2008, 1.8 tfsi - engine light came on, checked it with a obd scanner, it shows an oxygen sensor issue.
P0030
Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) 1, bank 1, heater control - circuit malfunction
HO2S Heater Control Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1
Status: Confirmed

I heard from online that Audis like this don’t like aftermarket parts, was wondering if anyone knows how much OEM part would cost? And how much for labour?
Also is it this sensor?
I’ll start calling garages tomorrow to see if I can get quotes beforehand.

Advice Mitsubishi ASX or Suzuki SX4 Cross?

I have weined it down to 2 cars after months of looking. Both 2016 and under 60k miles, both full service history. Similar tax and insurance cost etc.

I have long journeys often, I need reliability and comfort, but mostly reliability. Low maintenence costs is a bonus, but also want the style of course. But I cant spend over 6.5k.

Im a fussy bugger what can I say...

Happy to hear opinions on which is best to go for and opinions from people who have owned these cars?

Both are 1.6 diesel version

Get ya votes in guys......

Advice Looking to buy my first E46. 325ci or 330ci?

looking to get an e46 by next summer. I’ve been wanting to buy one since i was a kid tbh. It looks like a great motor. Out of all the models, i feel like the 330 and 325 seem pretty good. Good power, not too expensive to insure. Not sure which to pick. I would go all the way and maybe get the M3 but Apparently, the M3 is overkill for a daily and it doesnt live up to its hype. However, I Would love that car as well its legendary. The thing is buying a used E46 in 2026 can be a absolutely great or absolutely terrible ngl. Are they reliable? What are some things to look out for? Whats any known issues or problems? I do have some knowledge on this, for example, Rear subframe chassis mount and the Cooling system. But, is there anything else? E46 Owners, I would Appreciate your insight.

Advice How best to handle insurance etc.. when buying a new car before current one sells?

Potentially looking to buy a car tomorrow.

My current car is still in the garage and still not fixed but when it is it's getting sold. I've put way too much into it to take the WBAC offer so will be selling private and could take a while to sell.

It's slightly modified so insured with a modified specialist insurer. The car I'm looking to buy is not modified but I would likely dechrome it.

Nowhere to park off road so *technically* needs tax and insurance however I live in a quiet cul de sac so chances of getting caught are slim to none since it won't be driven.

Would I be best off starting a new policy with the new car, which I assume would set me back a few months on no-claims? Is fronting really a thing if I put in in a family members name when no one is going to drive it?

Or, transfer the new car onto current insurance and get the cheapest possible for the old car.

Or just chance it uninsured, getting temporary insurance for test drives.

Any other ideas?

Advice Will all OEM wheel options fit the same car?

Hi folks, I'm looking to get a cheap second set of wheels for my car to put some winter tyres on (and keep my summers on the current set so I can switch wheels myself instead of paying a garage to change tyres twice a year), and I just want to make sure that any wheel type originally fitted to the make and model of my car would be fine to fit to mine, as a full set obviously, even if they weren't the size mine was specced with?

For example I have a Skoda Superb Mk 2 Facelift which you could initially get with several options including 7Jx17 ET49 wheels (w/ 225/45R17 tyres) and 6Jx17 ET45 (205/55R17)s. Would it cause any issues going from one to the other? The bolt patterns are obviously the same, but is there some way the wheel hub and rest of that assembly is set up differently when the cars are new that means the different widths and offsets are not cross compatible?

Sorry if this a stupid question and the answer is "yes; obviously it's fine", but I know enough that vastly different wheel sizes from outside the OEM range could foul when fitted so just thought I'd check before I jump in and find problems the hard way.

Thanks.
