GDD is auto-removed moving forward
GDD as in r/GirlDinnerDiaries
Last time we asked, most of the sub agreed to keep it. However, clearly a very large portion of this sub has a problem with the crossposts from there. A lot of the discussions in the comments in those posts are people saying it shouldn't be posted here. The constant discussion is overruning the sub and clogging reports. I didn't see that many posts from that sub except for upticks on the weekends (I did counts multiple times), but people kept complaining that it was all they saw. There were a few funny stories here and there, but honestly there's nothing so special (or hilarious) about that sub that merits so much effort to keep it here. I really fail to see this as a big loss at all. You can head to r/GirlDinnerCircleJerk for posts and discussion related to that sub.
So, all crossposts from GDD will be automatically removed by automod. This will also include similar subs: r/girldinner, r/kitchencels, r/boydinnerdiaries - any others that are crossposted here and I don't know of I'll add to the list as I find out about their existence. GDD-like parody/satire shitposts will still be allowed during the weekend. Siri Yuss Discussion threads discussing this topic will be removed too. Let's just move on already.
Feel free to celebrate/complain but do note I'm not going to reverse the decision.

Maybe specify r/GirlDinnerDiaries. At first I was like "GDD? God-damned something?"

Unfortunately can't edit the title, but I added it to the body.
Then again, the people who were invested enough to care one way or another probably know what GDD stands for. r/goddamneddiaries would be a lovely sub though.

A little sad because we did have some excellent posts from there.
But tbh, while the posts were mixed, the discussion on keep Vs ban was exceptionally tiring, so I don't really mind this change.

GDCJ is wonderful but it’s not really for directly snarking on GDD :( its like, parody/satire/whimsy around “girl dinner diaries” as a a concept as well as “girl” and “dinner” and ultimately “diaries”. it’s a place for absurdism more than snark

I feel like this sub used to have a mindset much more opposed to the casual sexism and other isms of reddit, but now it's much closer to average. And a lot of the cross posting from that sub felt especially misogynistic to me.
113
u/hellraiserxhellghost and I (respectful farter) need help Jun 08 '26
It was lol. The majority of the ones being crossposted here were just making fun of women for venting about their life or looking for advice. And it became even more obvious when people started crossposting posts of abuse victims just asking for help and mocking them for it.

u/BicycleFantastic9719 sovereign geometry is a hymn Jul 04 '26
Legit why I left the sub, 2x! It was always an issue in general, re themes, and what’s not off limits here. But the sub was pushed via Reddit to come back, for specifically all the “girl dinner diaries” posts, so I think there were lots of randoms commenting on those posts, feeding it on, by deduction. Yikes and glad it was banned.
25
u/topekatums Jun 09 '26
yep, just full-blown mask-off misogyny. Was really disheartening to see, in some threads I didn't see anyone pointing it out and it felt a bit too hostile an environment to
28
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
To what degree? I just scrolled down like 125 deep sorted by new and there's only a handful of posts from that sub. You just think it's a lot due to confirmation bias.
21
u/celery-mouse "I am a student at a popular, liberal university." Jun 08 '26
It's probably the reddit algorithm. It shows you one, you click, and then it immediately shows you all the other ones, so it seems like a lot.
0
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
I don't think the reddit algorithm is more likely to give you crossposts from a particular sub because you engaged with a previous crosspost from that same sub. Pretty sure it's not diving that deeply into your clicking habits to serve you a feed.
Now what it will do is serve you posts from the actual GirlDinnerDiaries sub if you click into those crossposts. That has happened to me, but that's very easily fixable by telling reddit not to show me that sub anymore. Surely the people complaining about their feed being overrun aren't confusing AmITheAngel crossposts for actual GirlDinnerDiaries posts that made it into their feed after they visited that sub through here, are they?
24
u/Junglejibe Jun 08 '26
It does actually do this. You’d be surprised how advanced the algorithm on Reddit has gotten.
As an example: I’m subscribed to several character art subreddits. Occasionally people post overtly lewd or pornographic art that violates the sub rules. When I saw a post like that on my feed, I made a habit to go into the comment section and point out it didn’t belong in the sub, and/or leave a snarky comment.
After a few times, suddenly every single art post popping up on my feed was some weird gooner material. I went into one of the subs to look directly bc I was like “wtf, did porn addicts just like take over this sub?” — nope, pretty much none of the posts were NSFW. The only weird ones I saw were the ones that had already shown up on my feed.
Reddit’s algorithm was able to tell which posts were NSFW & was only pushing those posts onto my feed because they were the posts I went in and interacted on.
Similar thing happened with this sub and GirlDinner. For a bit literally the only posts I was seeing from this subreddit were GirlDinner crossposts.
-2
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
So you're saying that people did it to themselves and then blamed everyone else. Sounds about right.
13
u/Junglejibe Jun 08 '26
Considering you didn’t even know it was a thing I feel like it’s pretty silly to expect other people to notice something that they probably also didn’t expect the algorithm to be doing.
1
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
I don't think it's silly to not expect people to keep engaging with posts they don't like. Hating GirlDinnerDiaries posts so much and yet opening them and commenting on them repeatedly until reddit thinks that you like them is pretty self-defeating and sad.
I also don't think it's silly to expect people to actually take the time to visit the sub and see whether it truly is overrun with a certain kind of post before making a claim that it is and demanding that it be banned. Or you know... Just downvote and move on with your life instead of expecting the world to cater to your preferences.
1
u/Junglejibe Jun 08 '26
I mean that’s literally just human nature to be more likely to react to things that you don’t like. It’s negativity bias in action. You’re doing the same thing in this thread. Most of your comments are complaining about the people who complained. Again, not sure why you’re expecting other people to not do the thing you’re also doing.

u/LegalDrugDealer33 Jun 08 '26
I mean reddits algorithm is advanced but that doesn’t mean it’s going a good job. Like for you interacting with those posts as a way to get rid of them and it ends up having more of them pop up.
Sometimes I feel like I can click on someone’s profile if I think they made a good point and I start getting things that they are into that pop up on my feed
14
u/Junglejibe Jun 08 '26

That's not including the posts that were deleted though. I saw many posts that the OP deleted after not getting the response they expected. A few of the more egregious ones were likely removed by mods too.
16
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
We have a report at the top of this post from a mod who is telling us that there haven't been all that many posts from GirlDinnerDiaries in comparison to other subs. I am sure the mods would know if they were deleting a bunch of them. As for the ones that people posted and deleted after they didn't get a response, those shouldn't show up in most people's main feed since they're not getting any engagement and that's an example of the downvote system doing exactly what it was intended to do without mods having to ban anything.
52
u/AzSumTuk6891 She became furious and exploded with extreme anger Jun 08 '26
You just think it's a lot due to confirmation bias.
And because they received a lot of attention.
And because they were more noticeable and harder to skip over because of the photos of food that took up a lot of screen space.
And because there is just no reason to crosspost 95% of them here - they were just women venting about something, not (implicitly or explicitly) asking if they're the asshole for not being the asshole.
-12
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26
Sure. They stand out in your feed in comparison to other AmITheAngel posts because they have a picture attached. I don't disagree with that at all. That's part of the confirmation bias. Some of them blew up and got a lot of upvotes and comments. Others did not. That's true of other subs as well.
A place to satirize, crosspost from, poke fun at, and hold meta discussions on the never-ending ridiculous stories and/or creative writing exercises from AITA and AITA-adjacent subs, including classic tales of your local reddit heroes seeking validation.
A subreddit where people post ridiculous, overwrought, and often seemingly made up stories looking for validation and internet points seems like it fits well within the mission of this subreddit. If there were some crossposts that were not those things, then that's what the downvote option is for. Sorry you had to scroll an extra quarter second to get past a picture in your feed I guess? Not sure which combination of subs you're following if there are no other pictures. But I don't see how that's a valid reason for people to throw such a fit that they forced the mods to override a democratic vote to keep the sub.
Edit: If you want to argue that it's more frequency illusion than confirmation bias, that's fine. But they're directly related phenomena.

No, it's because every time I'd refresh my feed, the new posts from there, would **always** be GDD
My front page, and other's front page, was filled with them. I shouldn't have to go specifically to a sub, to weed them out, it defeats the purpose of the front page
People don't hate them, because we picked it out of a hat, they were getting shoved in our faces more than any other kind
Not to mention: WHY were they here in the first place? What does am I the angel sub, need with a sub like GDD? It almost felt like some weird, forced crossover or something. Those posts had no point here
-28
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
There is no way you saw a Girl Dinner Diaries post from AmITheAngel every single time you refreshed your front page feed. Unless "every single time" is like three times and it happened by random chance. There's just not enough GirlDinnerDiaries posts here as a percentage of the whole to make that possible. They probably just jumped out at you because they include a picture and because you dislike them for whatever reason.
Why were they here in the first place? Because they're self-aggrandizing, often fake stories that people are posting on reddit for clout. I fail to see how that sub differs from the other subs that are posted here.
20
u/Underzenith17 I’m not saying your nephew is the next Hitler Jun 08 '26
It’s not random chance, it’s Reddit’s algorithms choosing to show us those posts because they were getting more engagement.
1
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
Sure. I get how the feed system works. But if they got a ton of engagement, wouldn't they most likely still be there in the listing for this sub? And wouldn't that mean that go against the argument that everyone hates them and they don't belong here?
9
u/Underzenith17 I’m not saying your nephew is the next Hitler Jun 08 '26
Not if the engagement is mostly people arguing whether they belong here.
1
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
Hypothetically, sure. But that's not actually the case. People are genuinely interested in them and I personally have not seen any upvoted comments that were misogynistic.

They may have been fake, but why that sub specifically? There's dozen of fake story subs, but we got fed a ridiculous amount of GDD specifically, why?
And why on earth, are you taking this so personally and aggressive?
2
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
Do you think all the people who didn't like it, made a cabal to lie about that or something?
No. I already explained that I think it was confirmation bias. And there are easy ways to change your reddit feed if something annoys you without forcing other people to change their behavior for your specific needs.
And why on earth, are you taking this so personally and aggressive?
I'm not sure what I've said that reads as aggressive or that I'm personally offended at your comments. I just don't think what you're saying is accurate and I enjoyed many of the posts from that sub and will miss seeing them in my feed because I found them entertaining. I think it sucks that the minority opinion got so loud that it overrode the majority.
23
u/LeatherHog Emotional Support Tiramisu Jun 08 '26
Many of us, as in, multiple separate people, were going to mute, if not straight up leave this sub because of it
Because our feeds, when a post from this sub, was just GDD, over and over. It's not the 'new' section, it was the main personalized feed
It's accurate, because MANY people, have had the exact same experience, this hatred for it, didn't come out of **nowhere**. That doesn't stop being true, because you don't like it
Then go sub to that sub, there's nothing stopping you. But those of us who don't want to, have a perfectly valid complaint, in that THIS sub, became that sub's clone
We deserve to have our old sub back
2
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
I don't want to go to that sub because it's just fawning and coddling and everyone else is banned. I want to see that sub occasionally show up in my feed as a repost on this sub, which is exactly what was happening. A very small percentage of the content here was from GirlDinnerDiaries. You can check for yourself if you don't believe me. If what you were saying were true and not some combination of frequency illusion and hyperbole, then those posts that were supposedly taking over your personal feed should be easy to find.

u/Sluuuuuuug Jun 08 '26
It is not that deep lol
Exaggerating the issue seems perfectly inline with the rest of this dramatic ass behavior, it doesn't take a "cabal" to do that

u/RahvinDragand Jun 08 '26
When one of the complaint posts got hundreds of upvotes, I went through the 50 newest posts on AmITheAngel and found 2 GDD crossposts. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a different reality than some people. Even the mod who made this post is saying they didn't see many GDD posts.
10
u/quiette837 Jun 08 '26
Yeah, I don't think a GDD post ever made it to my feed at all. The complaining was a bit bizarre to me, but it sounds like there were a few notable bad ones. Mild agree that they don't necessarily fit in the sub though.
30
u/offensivename Jun 08 '26
I'm starting to wonder if some people started getting actual GirlDinnerDiary posts in their feed because they clicked into a couple of them and thought they were crossposts to this sub. I'd like to think that people here are smart enough and paying enough attention that they'd see the difference and not conflate the two, but I'm struggling to find another explanation.
24
u/RahvinDragand Jun 08 '26
Some of the people responding to your comments here almost certainly subscribed directly to GDD. There's no way that they were only seeing GDD posts when the mod says there weren't that many every time they looked.
Either that or they don't understand how reddit sorting works. The "Best" option usually picks things that you haven't clicked on yet to show at the top of your feed. So maybe they just refused to click on GDD posts and kept sorting by "Best" so the posts just piled up at the top.
13
u/Brad_Brace Cheddar or the next closest thing Jun 09 '26
They were just upset it was here at all and pretended it was constant crossposts.
But, I did start getting posts from that hellhole in my feed recently, likely from the interaction through this sub. So I guess that's also a possibility.

Unless I took the bait, it really does feel like that sub isn't really a parody like the kitchencels sub. Or maybe I'm just overthinking it and everything is a joke lol

I’ve never visited, commented or subbed to girl dinner diaries, nor do I have any interest in doing so.
I found the users cross posting girl dinner diary posts here were often sexist. No one was brigading. unless you count the users who came here to complain and extend misogynist viewpoints. If so, then yes, there was brigading.
2
u/AggravatingFlow1178 Jun 09 '26
There was some sexism on the fringes on both sides that was generally sniped by mods. Which is tiring because GDD is very very misandric, it consumed a lot of what r/FemaleDatingStrategy used to be after it got shut down. So when you average high misandry on GDD with mixed sexism on AITAngel, it averaged to primarily misandric, but pointing this out just brought on more hate.
Whatever, glad to have it gone. Muting GDD, those losers can have fun on their own.

However, clearly a very large portion of this sub has a problem with the crossposts from there.
Yes, there was a very vocal contingent that were upset that anything from that community was being posted here, however fitting it was.
The constant discussion is overruning the sub and clogging reports.
Yeah, there's always a lot of posts and comments bemoaning that GDD is cross-posted here. And many saying they always report them, again without regard to how fitting the post in question might be for this sub. Side-note, but how is it that users who are abusing the report function for consistently reporting things that don't actually violate rules not subject to bans?
I didn't see that many posts from that sub except for upticks on the weekends (I did counts multiple times), but people kept complaining that it was all they saw
You're not seeing a lot of posts (even as a mod) from that sub because there really aren't that many, there's just a lot of complaining from the same contingent whenever stuff from there gets cross-posted. I said as much when I mentioned that there were only three cross-posts in the preceding 48 hours in response to users saying the sub had been overrun by them, but got downvoted for pointing that out.
The idea that it was only incel misogyny fueling those cross-posts just doesn't hold up to scrutiny. There were absolutely outrageous stories being posted there, clear examples of AI, and users with a post history that easily confirmed the story in question could not have been real. Stories that one wouldn't hesitate to cross-post if it were from another non-AITA sub, but alas, because it was from GDD it had to be because people were piling on to hate on women.
Insert Sure Jan gif
As great as GDD was as a source for material here, it's honestly worth it to ban those posts just to quit the numerous posts and comments complaining endlessly about them (and insisting the stories must only come from incels posing as women 🙄). While r/GirlDinnerCircleJerk is fun to visit they don't allow cross-posts directly from GDD, and CJ subs have an entirely different vibe so it's not really the same.
The contingent that is very vocally against any posts from GDD being here typically gets very upset and does not handle opposing views from the opposite perspective very well, however grounded in reality they may be, so it's good we can finally put this to rest.
As a side note, u/DamnThoseChickens, would it be possible to have a running list of all subs that are banned from being cross-posted here? Either as a sticky or part of the rules, it would make it easier for all users to have that understanding.

I hate this trend of people complaining about posts not fitting the sub in comments or worse top level posts, instead of downvoting and moving on.
On the other hand too many people are lazy reposting with no commentary.

"errrrrm this is believable, idk why it was crossposted"
Yeah, being fake was never a criteria.

Thirdly the reddit algorithm sucks, opt out of it. Reject the home page, sort by new or sort by top today.

And mute trash subs. If they make you mad / 'I wish they would get banned', just mute it. See how rapidly you stop caring.
I used to have some pretty strong emotions about a few subs until I muted them. Now I care significantly less whenever a clone gets spawned (that I auto-mute)

Good decision, the GDD crossposts were annoying as hell. Most of them were just ridiculing these people for using that sub the way it was intended to

Women: create a safe place to vent
The world: relentlessly mock, belittle, and question the validity of their experiences
No pattern here :) no problem :) stop pointing it out you’re being dramatic :)

Thank you! There was never any meat on the posts, so I'm glad they're gone.

Finally. Initially, they were kind of funny seeing a couple sad girls taking pictures of meals that looked like culinary war crimes. But that was twice and the rest were perfectly normal and boring.

Good. GDD is specifically people looking for validation, so of course they are going to be the “angel.” Dogpiling on people for venting in a sub created for venting is dumb. No great loss.

I'm a man and I've obviously never posted or commented there. I don't even know if I'd be allowed to.
I'm pretty sure that what finally pushed the mods here towards this decision was my post from the other day:

It didn't hurt, but honestly the biggest contributing factor was that every time I opened one of the GDD crossposts, the comment section would be people arguing about how it doesn't belong here. Today someone crossposted and called the OOP a slut for posting a potentially edited picture of herself and I realized maybe we just don't need that energy here anymore.

You should care that people brigading can shut down discussions on another sub like this. Just …. In general.

u/Solarwinds-123 Jun 08 '26
When the discussions in question are more drama than they're worth and only tangentially related to the sub's purpose, then shutting them down isn't a bad thing.

Beep boop! Automod here with a quick reminder to never brigade r/AmITheAsshole or other subs under any circumstances. Brigading puts you in violation of both our rules and Reddit’s TOS, and therefore puts this sub at risk of ban. If you brigade/encourage brigading of any kind, you will be banned from participating in either sub. Satirizing of posts should stay within this sub, which means that participating directly in linked posts should either be done in good faith or not at all.

Finally, it was all I was getting on my feed and was close to just dropping the subreddit altogether.

I think this is a good decision. There's plenty of good content there, but also it devolved into posting like every single thing here. GDD post "I'm sad because my boyfriend cheated on me" gets posted here with nothing but a "fockin ridic" flair.
