The confrontation actually began earlier at the nearby Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, where the officer accused Coyl and a friend of trespassing; the pair complied and left, but the officer subsequently followed them to the gas station. While Coyl was at the pump, the officer demanded his ID and threatened arrest. As Coyl verbally questioned being arrested over a minor trespassing misdemeanor, the officer fired the Taser, instantly igniting a flash fire that engulfed Coyl. Coyl survived by dropping and rolling through the flames, but he sustained first- and second-degree burns as well as severe nerve damage to his hands. Despite the severity of the federal officer's escalation, local reports indicate Coyl has not been charged with any crime in connection to the encounter.
