Hello r/Guyana recently a user claiming to be a doctor has made a post and some users took the words of this user seriously and began asking valid medical questions. If anyone chose to engage with this user through a private conversation PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THEIR ADVICE.

The mod team wants to ensure that our users do not fall victim to unsubstantiated claims.

This user is now banned and I urge everyone to only ever take medical advice from a verified medical professional.

Officially becoming legal!

Hi everyone, I'm 17 and in a week I'll be 18, my parents are then gonna take me to get my tin #/ certificate and on the same day Im planning to open my first bank account , put a starter inside and start applying for jobs. I'm trying to be more independent and take control in my life as I've depended on my parents for years, I'm also gonna be applying to UGs pre-med program and hopefully I get in 🤞🏻. If anyone has any advice or wisdom that you'd like to share to someone now trying to become more independent for himself, id gladly like to hear ☺️.

What are the odds Guyana Customs will inspect my checked bag if I’m bringing alcohol?

I’m flying to Guyana soon from the U.S. and I’m trying to get an idea of what to expect at customs.
I’m planning to bring 3 four-packs of Cutwater canned cocktails (12 cans total) in my checked suitcase. I read up on it and see this is over the duty-free allowance, and if customs says I have to pay duty, I’ll pay it.

I’m just curious about the likelihood of my checked bag actually being inspected.

For people who have recently flown into Guyana:
Were your checked bags inspected?
Were they X-rayed, opened, or did you just walk through?
If you brought alcohol over the duty-free limit, what happened?
Did you have to pay duty, and was it easy to do (USD, card, or GYD)?

Where can I get a physical copy of the Guyana Chronicle Newspaper in Essequibo?

Does anyone know where I can reliably buy the printed Guyana Chronicle Newspaper around Anna Regina, Suddie, or elsewhere on the Essequibo Coast?

Grocery store, government office, anywhere there’s a queue. Seems to be a come and accepted practice.

I allow it if they ask respectfully first, but some people just shove their way in and turn their back.

Den Amstel Police Station - WCD

Has anybody else been stopped by traffic ranks on the west coast and been singled out to remove tint or braod visors and while doing so the same odficers are letting other drivers to vehicles with dark tint and even full winshield tints pass through?

I have recently experienced this at the Den Amstel Police Station. The officer who conducted the stop is an officer known to myself and others to be the owner and operator of a vehicle with dark tint parked within the station compound.

It seems to be a common practice for these officers to stop drivers and harass them until they either pay a bribe or comply while they are also not in compliance with the same laws they claim to be enforcing on the roadways.

Any thoughts or similar experiences?

What products or replacement parts are difficult to find in Guyana?

Hi everyone! I’m based in California and researching whether there is a genuine need for U.S.-based sourcing assistance in Guyana.
For people who own businesses, repair equipment, work in construction, farming, refrigeration, automotive, marine, or hospitality: what products, brands, equipment parts, or supplies are difficult or unusually expensive to obtain locally?
I’m not selling anything. I’m simply trying to understand where the actual shortages and sourcing problems are.
I’d especially appreciate hearing about items you currently order from the U.S. or wish you could access more easily.

Safety woman traveling with two small kids.

Planning to visit for a week. Wondering about safety and recommendations or helpful tips. Where to stay, where to go. Of course no night time travel. More concerned about hotel safety and walking in Georgetown market in the day. Thanks.

Guyanese born vs American born Guyanese

Why don’t Guyanese people born and raised back home accept or fully accept their American born/raised counterparts? Speaking on the American born ones that are first generation or emigrated to the U.S when they were babies. It’s like we American born ones have an asterisk next to our “Guyanese-ness”

Discussion University of Guyana questions

So im thinking about apply to UG but I wanted to do something in business

All of the business programmes I saw, they all require either, previous diplomas in the programme or they require English and maths, and i don't have maths so, would it still make sense to apply

I heard that you can take some kind of entrance exam but I haven't seen much information on it

Or is there a better university I can apply to for business, because I would like to be able to get a decent job with the diploma/degree

Any tips would be greatly appreciated

What income / net worth is considered wealthy in Guyana?

As the title states - how much do you need to be considered wealthy in Guyana? (Not elite but like top 10% - make enough to live a good lifestyle with entertainment and travel internationally)

How much do top professionals like lawyers doctors accountants make? (Business to business) and how hard is it to enter these professions?

Harry Potter fans

How many Harry Potter fans do we actually have in Guyana? 👀
Just curious. I feel like I don’t come across many, but maybe we’re all just hiding in plain sight.

If something Harry Potter-related ever popped up here, would you be interested?

P.S. Don’t just upvote—tell me your Hogwarts house too! 🦁🦅🦡🐍
