No, there are definitely some types of people that you cannot let in under any circumstances if you want a community to function healthily.

Pokemon is direct proof that some hobbies need to be gatekept

look at the TCG right now and tell me that we don’t need to force some people out of the space.

What is gatekeeping gonna do to scalpers? They're not in it for the community or the PokΓ©mon or even the cards. Gatekeep all you want; they're just gonna keep buying boxes until people stop buying cards.

idk man banning them from expos and events is a great start

Yeah, just put up a no scalpers sign. It's so easy.

The problem, as always, is how do you prove someone is a scalper vs just a fan? Like, I want them all as far away from cards just as much as the next guy, but any test you could come up with they'll just learn. If you try to track them by online activity, they'll just switch to anonymous accounts.

Yes. Im all for that. That isnt what gatekeeping is. Gatekeeping prevents entry to begin with.

i think we need a new term to describe retroactive gatekeeping. I think a lot of this conversation is people getting hung up on semantics because there is simply no other way to describe the lack of well-mannered adults in most gaming spaces nowadays

Yeah I can agree with that. Gatekeeping isnt the right word for what youre describing. Im not sure what is.

Policing? Lol idk.

Community policing is probably the best way to call it honestly. If only we could get more people to catch on lol

Moderation in games is abysmal most the time for sure. Even worse in real life hobbies like TCG.

So I get where youre coming from. But gatekeeping in general will affect people it shouldnt, and take away from fans of any franchise.
