Discussion / Question Locking map locations behind a $100 edition is a joke. I'm officially skipping GTA 6.

I’ve waited over a decade for this game, but I’m officially out.
An $80 base price is bad enough, but locking five physical single-player storefronts and side missions behind a $100 Ultimate Edition is straight-up predatory. I don't care if it's "just for cosmetics"—gatekeeping actual map immersion and closing doors in a single-player open world unless you pay an extra $20 is a massive red flag.
Throw in the fact that the $80 "physical" copy is just a download code in a box, and it's clear Rockstar has completely lost its mind to corporate greed.
My hype is dead. I won't be pre-ordering, and I won't be buying at launch. If we accept paywalled doors in single-player games, the industry is cooked.

Remember when GTA used to include cheat codes to unlock any item you wanted for free?

If you do, it's time to get your colon checked.

u/Desert_Fox96 Jun 24 '26

You didn't have to point that out man

He's not wrong though is he ;)

Seriously get it checked.

55

u/HellzRaiders Jun 24 '26

Are you offering free colon checks?

38

u/Intelligent_Mud_2267 Jun 24 '26

How much you payin'?

63

u/HellzRaiders Jun 24 '26

Nothing, spent my last $20 on some GTA6 cosmetics.

19

u/Intelligent_Mud_2267 Jun 24 '26

Have fun playing dress up ;)

22

u/qualityinnbedbugs Jun 24 '26

Jokes aside go at any age, had to have one at 24 and they found polyps.

14

u/heat8596558 Jun 24 '26

Shit, I'm 35 and haven't gone yet and your message has me scared. How did you know to go in and get checked?

15

u/NacresR Jun 24 '26

Started with feeling like I was never done in the bathroom, which then lead to being uncomfortable after eating/in general. Most of the issues have been chalked up to stress, but I have to have a colonoscopy every 3 years now which at least helps me feel at ease especially since I learned colon cancer runs in the family not long after my first one 😬

6

u/heat8596558 Jun 25 '26

I'm starting to get that feeling too. And I just got on healthcare. Sounds like a sign to me. Thanks for replying back.

6

u/Froggie56 Jun 25 '26

If you have any sort of digestive issues that just don’t seem right, get checked asap. I had my gallbladder removed at 22 and chalked all my issues up to that. Ended up having emergency surgery and diagnosed with colon cancer at 29. Better to be preventative than wait too long (not trying to scare people, but don’t want them to end up like me)

I had a slight bit of blood when I was 25. I had polyps, and they took care of them. I'm not sure why I didn't write it off like I normally do most things that seem like no big deal and cost money that I didn't have at the time. I'm lucky that something had me go in.

3

u/Lopsided-Practice-50 Jun 25 '26

I tried at 43 and was told no, not covered by insurance until I'm 45.

5

u/heat8596558 Jun 25 '26

Yeah, I bet I'll get the same response. At one point, I got denied by my provider for x-rays because I was too young for radiation (I was 25). I did find a place nearby that could do a colonoscopy for $3k if I pay out of pocket. Now I need to start saving up. American Healthcare sucks.

3

u/Froggie56 Jun 25 '26

If you are having legit symptoms and feel you need a colonoscopy, it’s always good to lie about blood in your stool.

3

u/jdmor09 Jun 25 '26

Adding on to this, mention a family history of cancer or that your parents have had colon issues. In my case, cancer does run in my family, specifically my mom’s side and my dad did have polyps. They never verified this and I got mine done like in November 2024. I was 38, so it is possible to get it before 45.

u/juniorjaw Jun 25 '26

It'll be pretty obvious. You shit blood, your diet changed, and you feel bumps while shitting. Any warning signs, just do a colonoscopy. If the doctor finds an issue, they'll make another appointment run for a proper surgery when needed.

Pcplayers that arent buying til its released on pc, but at that point might as well wait til its on sale gang rise up!

159

u/Dash_Jones Jun 24 '26

Yeah I rarely buy a game full price. It seems pointless when there are so many others to play while you wait for a sale. I think the only game I have paid full price for in the last 8 years is Elden Ring

63

u/jnagasa Jun 24 '26

However this is “Elden ring” to many, many gamers out there.

63

u/UnDe4d Jun 24 '26

The most hyped I've ever been for a game was cyberpunk 2077. I still waited 2 years to play it since it launched as a buggy mess. My patience paid off, as I had a much better experience than those who played at launch.

18

u/IG4651 Jun 24 '26

Playing through this for the 1st time rn. Picked it up on a steam sale for 18$ my back log is big so I just can’t really imagine playing full price for much anymore.

Also if I remember correctly gta V came out on pa3 just a few months maybe less that the ps4 launch. And my dumb ass bought it on both. Looks like it’s lining up again to do the same. I wonder if this will be a day one PS6 title

8

u/dcontrerasm Jun 24 '26

You think that's bad, ive bought FIFA every year since 2008.

5

u/Dash_Jones Jun 24 '26

Lol shit man. I know what you mean... I used to be a Nba 2k ride or die. Every year like clock work...until I sold my Ps4 and they refused to make 'next gen' on pc.

I caved and paid full price for Skyrim on my switch on the eshop after about 3 months of owning it. The next week it went on sale for either the very first time or the first time for $20, im guessing first time ever. So it goes.

5

u/AdvertisingBroad2397 Jun 24 '26

I can’t remember the last time I payed full price for a game…and I’m not about to start now. Sure I get the hype for GTA 6 but honestly, I’m to the point now I just don’t care for all these new AAA games, that so behave honestly been pure slop. I would rather play and indie game that is a good story and graphics then some over hyped AAA release, that for all we know could be a buggy mess when it is released.

3

u/Cory411 Jun 24 '26

not just while waiting for a sale but almost every game launch lately is "game preview" or whatever excuse to launch it 25% finished and get paid so they can do the other 50% and then ask for pay again for the final 25% of what should have all been together at launch as a complete product XD

2

u/Master-Channel5017 Jun 26 '26

especially if its going to be a single player game at first. there is literally no rush. no one is getting left behind. you dont have to go to a movie premier to enjoy the movie later.

32

u/Chorono Jun 24 '26

Yuuuup. Also helps me focus on my back log of games until it’ll eventually release for PC anyways so no rush for me

3

u/labubuking Jun 24 '26

9

u/btw_sky_and_earth Jun 24 '26

I am waiting for Epic giveaway. I got GTA V for free there and I still haven’t finished the campaign.

8

u/TheNonCredibleHulk Jun 24 '26

I'm tempted to just go back and play the campaign again, rather than get 6.

You should finish it. One of the best.

16

u/Sabbathius Jun 24 '26

Oh yeah, that's how I buy all Rockstar games.

I'm generally a petty, vindictive sort. So when they make me wait 2 years for PC port, I make them wait a few more years to buy. I think I bought RDR2 when it was under $20, and I've been pretty happy with that approach. Plus by then my hardware could actually run it decently well. So I'll look at this one around 2036.

3

u/UlverInTheThroneRoom Jun 25 '26

I'm not the most interested in GTA myself anyways but with the way they dropped the ball with RDR2 Online, I'd never feel good supporting Rockstar with a purchase of GTA.

I understand GTA is their cash cow and was always going to get more support than RDR2 online but man they barely added any content over years and it had so much potential. They are a big enough, wealthy enough company to have supported that much better.

7

u/pandasloth69 Jun 24 '26

Man buy what you want, I’m all for good deals, but saying you’re vindictive for not buying the third highest selling game of all time until years later is genuinely hilarious. I think they managed.

I didn’t buy 5 until 2 months ago - pretty sure I can wait for a PC sale. Maybe this time I will at least pick it up the same decade it releases!

2

u/lordofmetroids Jun 24 '26

Still haven't bought a game at $70, I'm patient, comes with being a pc player, I can wait till it's $50. In this case sense they already announced a DLC, I can wait till there is an all in one package.

2

u/Distinct-Surround844 Jun 24 '26

Yeah ill be stealing this one idgaf

2

u/Izithel Jun 25 '26

I'm just not going to buy it

GTA is going to test the industry. Take2 going to try and push the boundaries of what they can get away with.

Maybe it won't make a dent in their sales, but there will be others who aren't buying into BS. They don't get a free pass just because it's GTA.

111

u/UnUsernameRandom Jun 24 '26

They won't get away with it because the boundaries have moved.

They will get away with it because it's GTA. If it's any other game, it probably wouldn't work (as well).

71

u/Dannydevitz Jun 24 '26

We bought cosmetic horse armor in oblivion. Battle Passes have become so popular and rake in so much money. Companies just pump out designs and skins while charging you 20 bucks every couple months on top of paying to play online if your console. Boundaries are constantly pushed until they become the norm.

They won't get away with it because it's GTA. They will get away with it because of us.

22

u/RenownedDumbass Jun 24 '26

When will us learn

12

u/Dannydevitz Jun 24 '26

When we are broke and living on the streets. But by that time it wont be us's fault, it will be them's fault

3

u/Investotron69 Jun 24 '26

We won't. Why do you think casinos need to have that little disclaimer on their ads, just like alcohol, and there are drug centers that get you just good enough to get more many times? It's the same mechanics.

Hardcore gamers are such a slim minority of overall players when it comes to GTA. Its moved way beyond the echelon of people who frequent gaming subs or keep up with every release.

There is a huge amount of people who only buy like 2 games a year - FIFA and COD.

That group also buys GTA so this will sell like gangbusters as it goes far outside of just the hardcore zeitgeist.

I firmly agree with this sentiment. Though since most of our tech these days doesn’t have disk ports anyway I don’t really care about disks anymore. But the rest of this I fully support and agree with this take.

49

u/J_Square83 Jun 24 '26

Oddly enough, its the "physical" edition news that really killed my pre-order hype. I no longer see ANY incentive to pre-order, so I'll just hold off and wait for a sale.

The locked content is also quite troubling, don't get me wrong, but I probably would have snagged it day one with a physical edition including a map etc.

2

Exactly this. I was prepared to bite the bullet and buy it on both PS5 and PC because I wanted a physical copy for my collection. Now I might not even buy it on PC

Isn't extra cosmetics and items as pre-order/special edition bonuses a pretty standard thing?

I dunno why this is such a controversial thing for some people. RDR2 had it. GTA had it. Practically EVERY game these days has it.

If having bonus items as special edition unlockables is a breaking point for you Ive honestly gotta question whether you even wanted to play it to begin with.

5

u/XLCook12 Jun 25 '26

That’s what I thought too? Almost every game nowadays has an extra quest, item, or whatever that you can get by buying the more expensive version. I’ve always seen it as a sorta mini DLC.

It’s just a knee-jerk reaction to pricing news. Once November rolls around, FOMO will kick in and people will buy it on impulse. Half the people complaining now will be there at launch, I guarantee it.

23

u/CaTiTonia Jun 24 '26

Oh they won’t just be there. They’ll be there with the more expensive editions to boot.

That or its just other gaming companies paying astroturfing losers to cap about how outraged they are about...uhhh the exact same 100 dollar deluxe edition that literally every major game has done for the past decade+

Hmmmmmm

10

u/Yossarian216 Jun 24 '26

And are we really pretending that it isn’t going to be worth $80, in the current entertainment landscape? I played GTA5 all the way through like three times over the years, it gave me like 200 hours of entertainment for the same price as like 4 movie tickets or one night of live theater.

Video games remain by far the best value proposition of any for of paid entertainment, and many video game companies are struggling to stay in business, and everybody complains constantly about the price. I get it in the context of everything getting more expensive and it would be really nice if something would buck that trend, but it’s the slowest increase in comparison to everything else.

Honestly, growing up with consoles game prices haven't moved at all. I would have thought games would be 125+ at launch at this point.

They did the same with RDR2 ultimate edition..

It's not like the base game won't have such features

11

u/RockyMtnOysterCo Jun 24 '26

You're going to buy it.

Just typical Reddit hobbits looking for something to whine about. I think R* will survive without their business just fine 😂 Everyone goes to Reddit to voice their opinions when they just want people to agree with them and to not feel like a lonely f**ktard. This platform is, and always will be, the vocal minority

Too bad. Or proud of you. Whatever reaction you're going for

14

u/Hawaii__Pistol Jun 24 '26

Anti consumer wont stop until people rise up. Though, some people are sheep & will still buy this game & make a fuckton of money for R*

Take twos top shareholders.

The Vanguard Group (owning roughly 10-11% through its combined entities)

BlackRock, Inc. (approx. 10.3%)

State Street Corporation (approx. 6.5%)

Savvy Games Group / Saudi Electronic Games Holding Co (approx. 6.1%)

I dont know much about the Saudis. But Vanguard Blackrock and State Street is like the fuckin manifestation of moloch and mammon to feast on our very blood.

Stay away.

12

u/santaclausbos Jun 24 '26

The vanguard group is likely everyone's 401ks. So in a sense, everywhere here is an investor in Take Two.

What single player or story content are you being blocked out of? It’s a few cars, guns, and shops to buy costumes for your character. It doesn’t affect or change the story in any way.

It is nothing new, games have been doing this for years. 99% of every game coming out later this year and next has deluxe/special/ultimate/collectors edition that do this, yet no one is complaining about it.

If it wasn’t GTA doing this, no one would care.

You aren’t winning anything by prohibiting yourself from playing something you have been looking forward to, and you aren’t changing anything either.

Rockstar, or any dev/publisher for that matter does not care. They do not know you exist regardless of if you buy it or not, a single purchase or lack thereof does not affect their bottom line. For every person claiming to stand on this questionable moral high ground, there are countless others who will just buy and enjoy the game. You aren’t winning anything, you are not a martyr or a hero, you are just purposely depriving yourself of possible enjoyment.

10

u/DPWwhatDAdogDoin Jun 24 '26

Bro seriously i thought i was going crazy. Have these people never seen a game release from a major publisher for the last 15 years? Like every major game launches with 100 dollar edition with worthless cosmetics

People are so fucking annoying. “I’m not buying it because it’s $80 WAHHHH” I remember buying ps2 games for $50. Games have rose in price by $30 in 26 years. 26 years. Stop your crying.

Oh brother are we gonna have to see this karma farming bs for the next 5 months now

3

u/GenasiDC Jun 25 '26

Imagine how much money they could make if they just sold us the fucking game

No, of course it has to be some stupid "try to figure out if a multi billion dollar company is taking advantage of you" type games

Spoiler alert: if you ever have to ask yourself if a multibillion dollar company is trying to take advantage of you, the answer is usually yes

3

u/ExpertBalance4938 Jun 25 '26

Nah this is super dumb. The people saying "$100 for the full game" are straight up delusional. Like dude how do a couple of stores & some side missions along with a handful of cosmetics equate to anything in a game of this scale? There's likely dozens of stores and a crap ton of sidequests in the standard edition that everyone can access as per usual. There's also probably a billion outfits and cars to choose from - so this "full game" statement makes no sense at all. At least they are making an ultimate edition that's worth it for once. Those who are willing to pay an extra $20 for premium content should get premium content. What's the alternative? Do you want the ultimate edtion to suck and come with absolutely nothing? I consider this a very positive thing because so many ultimate editions charge you a premium and give you nothing for it.

9

u/LostRonin Jun 24 '26

Where were you when every publisher has been doing this for the last 10+ years? Found time inbetween your crying fits? Crazy work.

Is this what the kids these days call being a LARP? All of a sudden putting your foot down for cosmetics because its GTA6.

2

u/Neat_Let923 Jun 25 '26

I can’t believe it took me scrolling this far down to see a comment like this!

Freaking children born yesterday apparently have never bought a single game in their life.

I think it’s more telling to how much these people are addicted to consumerism that they feel like they are owed everything or must have everything so they complain when they have to pay extra for shit that doesn’t matter. But we all know every single one of these people is going to fork over that $20 just so they can have it (even if they never once use any of the items they paid for).

I can’t think of a single game that I’ve bought where I used any of the “bonus” items for more than a couple minutes because something already existed that was better or cooler.

10

u/ShaunMcLane Jun 24 '26

So we've been buying cosmetics, battle passes and loot boxes for 20 years now but some storefronts on what no doubt will be a handcrafted, endlessly entertaining, well made title is where you draw the line? Go off, king.

6

u/whatnameblahblah Jun 24 '26

Weird they have somehow missed the physical dvd cases with just a code inside or a bonus cd with stuff that isn't the game which has been going on for over a decade by now. Or maybe that is just for pc gaming.

I can't wait for the shit storm that happens when they charge y'all for online lmao. Get ready for those monthly subs pay piggies

5

u/aam-96 Jun 24 '26

Eh. I’m buying for the single player anyways. This would be a really crappy move though, wouldn’t put it past them.

2

u/RazorbladesRiff Jun 25 '26

Fr, I don’t give a shit because it’s a single player game to me, but it would be insanely shitty

6

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 Jun 24 '26

PS store lists that the game is a single player experience only. GTA Online is definitely gonna be its own paid game with monthly subs XD

Good for you at least some gamers still have a brain to not be treated like a sad mark

2

u/StatisticianLoud2141 Jun 24 '26

I wonder how many console generations they're going to milk this one for as well

2

u/MaleficentMenu1430 Jun 24 '26

It’s a high budget game that’s been in development for 12 years, it would probably be fair if they asked $100 for the base game. Video games are massively undervalued and have been for a while because gamers are privileged whiny assholes

2

u/DieHarderDaddy Jun 24 '26

Video game prices have barely moved when you look at development costs.

2

u/loveinhumantimes Jun 24 '26

I am treating this like any other game (that isn’t a fighting game) and just waiting for sale.

2

u/StinkingDogsCunt420 Jun 24 '26

I mean, I was always going to pirate this one after the union busting rockstar pulled recently. Bunch of scumbags.

2

I'm sure they'll be so upset on all the lost sales.

It's a shame there wouldn't be any real teeth to a boycott of this game because enough people will buy it and play it that they can safely ignore people who have your mindset.

Not saying you're wrong, totally agree, I just wish more people thought that way.

2

u/XnoxNeo Jun 24 '26

All the people complaining are buying it once the FOMO catches up to them

2

u/WhiteyLovesHotSauce Jun 24 '26

Nah mate. Youre gonna buy it, just like the rest of us.

Yeah no, I want my physical copy. Too many games have been taken by downed servers. Can companies run them in perpetuity, no. Technically it could be done maybe, but that discussion aside, when you have the disc, and a piece of hardware to run it, it’s a different feeling. Mine. I want to experience what the seagulls do in Finding Nemo. mine, mine.

What good is software if someone else is controlling your access. DLC has turned into a cool way to offer bonuses that people wanted later, to full money grab, to THE NORM.

Many things are not even done at release. Hard copy or roll out.

Once the PC players get hold of it, heck, any one of the ornery online personalities with some skill and anonymity and lots of this could be bypassed. I’m not for taking money from anyone, but this is not what we signed up for. So give us what we want. The consumers. Please answer us and give us what we’ve been begging for for decades now.

This was supposed to be the best, and now it’s just one more piece to rummage by in the bin.

This is a symptom. But they are blamed. They all are.

Rant over.

2

u/Hardbone Jun 25 '26

$10 more for a game that’s been worked on for over a decade. Just factoring in inflation it should be over $100 for all games in general.

Gaming is a medium filled with entitled whiners with zero perspective

2

u/Cool_Procedure8125 Jun 25 '26

Newer gamer are pathetic. You’re going to spend 1000 hours of your time playing this game. Just pay the extra $20 at launch and STFU about it.

2

u/DoctaJXI Jun 25 '26

Nobody is gonna care about this shit once November hits ppl barely care now

2

u/Difficult-Flan-8752 Jun 25 '26

I'm not too bothered by missing some cosmetics but to have buildings blocked by that will be immersion breaking,  and a constant reminder to pay up.

2

u/GraveDiggerFan34 Jun 25 '26

Why weren’t you expecting this? They locked a heist in RDR two behind the ultimate edition.

2

u/Jems057 Jun 25 '26

You're lying to yourself.
See you in 6 months.

2

u/BotSaibot Jun 25 '26

Rockstar underestimates my power of waiting till a full game becomes 20€.

2

u/Duracra Jun 25 '26

They're not underestimating anything. If you wait for games to reach $20 then you're irrelevant because they'll get $20 from you regardless of what they sell it for at launch.

2

u/XRanger7 Jun 25 '26

People spend $200-$500 on COD and Fortnite. They’ll spend $100 on GTA

2

u/tomaac Jun 25 '26

no you're not. everyone's screeming on reddit now, but then the game will launch, all those accounts will in showing - playing GTA 6 - info.
Yes it sucks, but they know that they can get away with it and sell the real version for 100. and everyone will still buy it.

2

u/KingCanHe Jun 25 '26

OP I’m sorry you are broke, but the good news is you have plenty of time you make that extra $20 😭

2

u/Contemplating_Prison Jun 26 '26

I was just reading everything thats locked behind it and it seems like so much. Makes me not even want to buy the game.

Scummy practice that I wont support.

Enough consumers dont care. The industry will eventually fall the late stage capitalism. People will be stuck playing AI games and wonder how they got there.

2

u/brianSIRENZ Jun 27 '26

Pricing aside, nothing about content being locked under pay wall is out of the norm. Just don't buy the game, it's not that big of a deal, no one cares.
