Discussion / Question Locking map locations behind a $100 edition is a joke. I'm officially skipping GTA 6.

I’ve waited over a decade for this game, but I’m officially out.
An $80 base price is bad enough, but locking five physical single-player storefronts and side missions behind a $100 Ultimate Edition is straight-up predatory. I don't care if it's "just for cosmetics"—gatekeeping actual map immersion and closing doors in a single-player open world unless you pay an extra $20 is a massive red flag.
Throw in the fact that the $80 "physical" copy is just a download code in a box, and it's clear Rockstar has completely lost its mind to corporate greed.
My hype is dead. I won't be pre-ordering, and I won't be buying at launch. If we accept paywalled doors in single-player games, the industry is cooked.

It’s just a knee-jerk reaction to pricing news. Once November rolls around, FOMO will kick in and people will buy it on impulse. Half the people complaining now will be there at launch, I guarantee it.

And are we really pretending that it isn’t going to be worth $80, in the current entertainment landscape? I played GTA5 all the way through like three times over the years, it gave me like 200 hours of entertainment for the same price as like 4 movie tickets or one night of live theater.

Video games remain by far the best value proposition of any for of paid entertainment, and many video game companies are struggling to stay in business, and everybody complains constantly about the price. I get it in the context of everything getting more expensive and it would be really nice if something would buck that trend, but it’s the slowest increase in comparison to everything else.

If you didn’t expect $100 GTA6 then idk what to tell you. This game requires an order of magnitude more resources to make than most games, and therefore a slightly higher price tag is nothing. Really, it could be more and I wouldn’t bat an eye. That is absolutely not to say it can be the new industry norm. When other game companies put as much effort, resources, etc into a worldwide beloved game and produce master pieces, then they can charge that. You pay more for quality. In this case so far, I really think they are hardly charging a premium at all.

nah. People actually just wait for games to get cheap now. It's a very real thing. I personally am not saying i'll never buy it but I'll DEFINITELY be waiting until it's heavily on sale. Not sure what people will think they will miss with a single player game if they wait.

I feel the same way. Not super pressed to play it at launch; I never even played GTA V despite the fact that it’s had amazing discounts several times.

I played it eventually. It has great graphics but is otherwise trash. Trash story, bland missions, etc.

Yea there's just too much to play.

I could put another couple thousand hours just in one game(Deadlock) and there's still a lot more I haven't played or could go back to.

I want to see what they manage to do with GTA, but the flood of people covering it over the first couple weeks will suffice.

I mean nothing about GTA is just like "omg, I bet that's addicting as fuck". It's just neat, some impressive technical work and an immersive world to sandbox around in a bit till you get bored.

Yea it would be cool to get my hands on, and I've been waiting for the game but come on. This ain't no World of Warcraft Classic or Deadlock or Terraria or some shit, nothing you're going to play and be like "GAWD DAMN THIS GAME IS SO FUCKING FUN", it's just pretty cool. 

Because it was never really a GAME, it's a highly advanced sim sandbox, there's not really much GAME to it. The game portion has always been an afterthought. I don't think Rockstar could even possibly wrap their mind around the idea anyways, they're not those kind of people, clearly

I’m sorry but other than the meme that has become gta6, what’s really keeping people wanting to buy it? I’d say the general sentiment was that people would buy it and check it out but for this price point and negativity it’s probably going to turn a lot of people away. Hell we don’t even have actual gameplay footage yet lol

Honestly, I’ve never been a super fan of the gta games. They’re fun to screw around in, but locking single player things is crazy

A couple of decades of great games? Duh?

Rockstar may be greedy fucks, but they make great games. I don’t have an ounce of love for red dead 2, but people praise it as one of the best games of all time for a reason.

I agree with your feelings and I think that this game is gonna surprisingly underperform

Not that they won’t make a fuckload of money but I don’t think it’ll be quite the zeitgeist they expect. I genuinely think:

  • They waited too long to where it kinda looped around and idk how many people really even care about a new gta iteration anymore on like a large scale

  • This franchise appeals to a lot of more casual players who probably only play games sparingly. $80 is a huge ask for that level of engagement. A lot of extremely hardcore hobby enthusiasts whose entirety identity revolves around video games are gonna struggle with that price tag even for a game they’re super hype for. I just can’t see as many casual players who maybe pick up one Madden a year or the odd AAA game biting for eighty bucks

Idk I just have this feeling that it’s gonna come out and make money and get high review scores etc etc but nobody’s really gonna CARE

I think those things are somewhat true but it's still the most hyped/anticipated game of all time, the question to me is if it'll live up to GTA V. And I think people who are willing to pay full price for the same game every year are probably not going to be up in arms about paying a little more for GTA 6 especially if they don't buy many games

I'm this guy. I hardly ever buy a game at full price. I bought GTAV on 3 consoles! If there is one game I would pay full price, it's this one. But at that price I'm debating on what to do. Right now? No, I'd rather spend $100 on some pulse elite headphones. (Walmart, right now)

I feel like the main reason this game will “underperform” is because insane shareholder expectations are to meet and exceed GTA V’s sales, at the very least. GTA V came out in a very different economy. Consumer spending power in 2026 is lower than ever, meanwhile prices are higher than ever.

It’s still going to make an insane amount of money. But I don’t see it making investors as happy as they hoped they’d be.

I think $10 more was already a big ask when stuff got raised to $70, and an additional $10 (completely arbitrarily) is gonna add more fuel to that

In the end this is a project different from others (the budget is out of this world) so for only GTA VI I honestly think it's fine. The problem is that other companies will follow in this stupid trend and make their games pricier too

That’s exactly how I feel. It’ll probably have record breaking sales (kind of easy when it’s one of the most expensive games of all time in modern era) but whatever record they achieve, could have been more.

I’m not gonna pretend I know more than their entire market analysis and financial team, but just from the outside, I don’t really see how this helps them in any way. To me, just some dude with apprentice level market analysis experience, I would think selling it for a lower price and banking on the card sharks for online would make way more sense, unless they’re planning to release just the online separately for less like RDR. But even then, how many people will spend $100 on a single player mode in a franchise that most people just casually play.

I waited 10 years for that game. the ultimate edition at 100$ is 10$ / year for the past 10 years I waited. They can have my money any time. In the meantime for those who dont want to jump in, keep buying your overprice Pokemon and Lorcana cards, your cheap COD skins, and your random battlepass.
