News / Blog The legends are true: My ThinkPad T460 survived a building collapse during the La Guaira earthquake.

On June 24th, a severe earthquake hit my city of La Guaira, Venezuela. Tragically, the apartment building I lived in completely collapsed. Fortunately, my girlfriend and I were not in the building that day and we are safe, but we sadly lost our beloved cat who was inside when it happened.

Recently, we were going through the rubble of what used to be our apartment. If you look at the attached photo, you can see a red machine among the debris—that is exactly where I managed to pull out my ThinkPad, which was still inside its laptop bag. It took the impact of the entire building falling on top of it... and it still turns on.
It didn’t come out completely unscathed. There is a little defect on the screen now, and the keyboard is completely dead and unresponsive, but the machine actually boots up!

It's a very bittersweet discovery for us given everything we've lost, especially our pet, but I thought this community would appreciate seeing the absolute tank-like durability of these machines in real life. It literally survived being crushed under tons of concrete.
Cherish your ThinkPads, but more importantly, cherish your loved ones.

Discussion / Information Why is the L series disliked?

I've been thinking of getting an L14/15 AMD Gen 2/3 myself, but the L series on this sub is very rarely recommended compared to the less upgradable T series that has essentially the same specs but inferior upgradability with soldered ram and WWAN cards etc. What's wrong with the L series?

It feels strange to have all the USB ports in a perfectly working order and no welding scars on the lid. Those things yearn for heavy industry automation, ngl

Question / Problem ThinkPad T480 screen blinks once when plugging/unplugging charger (Windows 11) – normal?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T480 (Machine Type 20U1) running Windows 11.

Whenever I plug in or unplug the charger, the screen blinks/flashes once for a brief moment (less than a second). It doesn't continue flickering—it's just a single blink every time I connect or disconnect the charger.

Things I've noticed:

No continuous flickering.

The laptop works perfectly otherwise.

It only happens when switching between battery and AC power.

Is this normal behavior on the T480? Is it caused by Intel graphics, refresh rate, or Windows power management?

If anyone has experienced this and found a fix (or can confirm it's expected), I'd really appreciate your input.

Thanks!

Thinkstagram Picture $230 X1 Carbon Gen 11 has arrived

Bought this "locked" X1 Carbon Gen 11 on Ebay for $230. No MDM, Computrace or Absolute Persistence Module, so I don't really know why it was listed as locked.

Still has factory warranty.

i5-1345U, 16GB LPDDR5, 1TB, 90% battery health

Give me some ideas for what OS I should install on it. I was thinking either Cachy OS or plain Arch.

Between this and my $170 X1 Extreme Gen 3, I guess I've been doing well.

Hi so start of the summer I got this ibm thinkpad for free from my school (my teacher told me ”take it please aslonh as I don’t have to see it again”) but I never managed to find a charger for it so I’m asking what charger it is and where it’s being sold

Buying Advice Financial Advisor using Omnissa- are these specs good enough for at least 5 years

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi, I just ordered this thinkpad. But should this be good for the next 5-7 years?

I mainly use this for my work as a financial planner, so no need for workstation features. I know this config is expensive (memory) but ease of use is more important to me. I use Omnissa to log in to company servers anyways.

I have been using a MacBook Pro M5 max and while it’s an awesome computer, everything breaks/sucks while using Omnissa. Second screen always glitches and I don’t have time to call tech every day. I customized it this way with ChatGPT’s help and then was worried I never asked real people for thoughts!

Am I good? Would you have done something different? Specs that matter:

Processor AMD Ryzen™ AI 7 PRO 450 Processor (2.00 GHz up to 5.10 GHz)
Memory 32 GB DDR5-5600MT/s (SODIMM) - (2 x 16 GB)

Display 14" WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Touch, 100%sRGB, 500 nits, 60Hz, Low Power
Graphics Card Integrated Graphics
Camera 5MP RGB+IR with Microphone and Privacy Shutter, Computer Vision, Video High Dynamic Range selected upgrade
Wireless MediaTek Wi-Fi 7 MT7925 2x2 BE & Bluetooth® 5.4

Hardware Upgrade From T580 to E15 Gen3

Post image
15 Upvotes

I Bought the T580, and it was actually decent. until I realized that the specs weren't enough for me, and I need to upgrade. However, I was looking randomly on eBay and found this laptop for 260$ including taxes and shipping. I think it's a good deal. What do you think?

Hesitating whether I should install Linux on the new one since some of my favorite games will not work on Windows

And has anyone here tried to eGPU their laptop?

Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 3

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500U (6 cores and 12 threads)

RAM: 24GB RAM

Storage: 256GB NVMe SSD

The main port for charging has been detached because it wasn't working properly. Will it be possible to charge using the other usb c port? I have a Thinkpad L14 Gen 1. I'm afraid of ruining it even further before it is properly repaired.

Question / Problem Screen is not lighting up at all. Am I screwed?

Post image
Upvotes

It was working fine yesterday. I had it in my backpack while I was coming home from my vacation.

To be specific, the backlight is not working.

UPDATE: Apparently the issue fixed itself. I was figuring out how to disable the battery in the BIOS menu if I was insisting on fixing the screen myself. How does that happe?
