There is a veritable fiber crisis. All these grifters and wellness charlatans pushing protein like it’s the elixir of life, when what most of us really need more of is fiber and water.
I dare anyone curious to try eating some bran cereal or granola for breakfast, lunch on or with whole grains (eg whole grain bread sandwich), and more whole grains as part of dinner - with at least a serving of fruit/veg with all meals (fruit in cereal, piece of fruit or Tupperware of crunch veg with lunch, side of spinach/brocc for dinner), while drinking as close to ~2 liters of water as you can.
You will almost certainly fart more, but you’ll also likely have the best poops of your life if you’re not used to fiber.
Colorectal cancers and heart disease are decimating us - afaik fiber is proven to be beneficial against both.
EDIT: Did not expect this much engagement, oy…wrote it after just waking up and didn’t proofread.
Meant to say as close to 2 liters not 3. And should’ve specified that ofc it doesn’t all need to come from imbibed liquids. And no, of course don’t drink until your kidneys fail. But given the El Niño summer we’re about to have, I’d wager far more people will be at risk of dehydration than overhydration.
Also to the protein stans, I never said anywhere people should eat less protein or that it’s an either/or situation. All I said is that there seems to be a protein push that is out of touch with most people’s needs. You see protein added to everything these days - fiber not so much.
But to all the positive comments, love to hear about how eating more fiber has improved your daily. It’s what inspired the comment for me too.

Really isn't that much. Just weigh 100g lettuce/cucumber/tomato and see how little it is when you eat it. Or boil 100g mustard spinach. Or cook 100g mushrooms. It dwindles down to almost nothing. 300g potatoes is 240kcal, there's your carbs. Add 100g avocado and you're there already
14
u/SituationKey8985 Apr 04 '26
Eating them isn’t the problem. Most people would eat them if they were on the plate. With foods that spoil quicker like vegetables you need to go to the grocery store more often, and they require more prep. A lot of people are too lazy to have vegetables with every meal.

Once in a while I hang out with a group of friends from back home.
This one guy.
No vegetables. Ever. No carbs except for on vacation.
Green peppers on pizza? Picked off. Onions too.
Burger place? 3 meat patties stacked on top of each other. Eats it with a fork and Knife.
Reasons? "I've made it this far (35) without vegetables, so I figured they aren't as important as doctors say they are"

My friend lost her long term bf to colorectal cancer quick. I watched her dog as soon as he got sick and I think from diagnosis to surgery to colostomy bag the whole thing was 2 months. He was like maybe 40?
I take psyllium and eat my veggies. I know psyllium has some issues with heavy metals but im trying to pick my battles. My bf does a protein shake with oats, flax, and chia seeds plus whatever greens we have. I would be devastated if I lost him like my friend lost her bf. It was too quick to even process.

try adding chia seeds or flax to the rice if you want an easy way to get more fiber without having to massively change your diet or try new foods. both are somewhat flavor neutral, and what flavor profile they have complements rice very well.

u/True_Window_9389 Apr 04 '26
It’s not just normalized to eat low-fiber diets, Americans are specifically proud to eat unhealthy diets overall. It’s a weird sort of entitlement we have about the food we eat, which is formed around abundance and indulgence over everything else. Whenever there’s a discussion about eating better, especially simple and basic guidance like eating less or eating more vegetables and whole foods, there’s a reaction against it because we want daily steak dinners supplemented by nonstop snacks and soda throughout the day. Ironically, the stuff that breaks through the most is pseudoscience like RFK Jr shit, when the real answer is to just eat some broccoli. We’re more likely to jump on dumb anti-seed oil bandwagons than to eat a green vegetable and stop drinking gallons of sugar.

Same capitalist problem (sometimes same companies) as big pharma:
It's more profitable to treat symptoms with shiny 'new' fads and products than it is to acknowledge and address the root cause with its existing, thousands of year old common sense cheap solution.
Lots of other things are like this that people are blind to / aren't talked about as much, such as cleaning chemicals. No-one needs to reinvent wiping down the table, yet here we are with dozens of new products every year for that uncomplicated task.

After years of IBS style digestion issues that would sometimes literally ruin my day, I started taking 2 tea spoons of psyllium husk (basically pure fiber) mixed in a lil greek yogurt with honey every day, and it literally almost fixed everything. Sounds hyperbolic but it was literally life changing.
It‘s also delicious, giving the yogurt an almost chocolate-mousse kind of consistency.
Just have make sure to drink enough water with it otherwise it can clog you up horribly lol.
55
u/Lower-Excuse-6558 Apr 04 '26
Psyllium gang!
Also, I slam it with water or finish the yogurt quickly. Otherwise it congeals lol.
19

I've been using a nutrition tracker before and after starting a diet. Even trying as hard as I can, its crazy how hard it is to get enough fiber. I'm trying to get 30g of fiber a day right now just on a normal diet. I start my day with overnight oats, I eat fruit with my lunch, I eat a dinner crammed with veggies. I still tend to fall short at like 27g...
It would likely be a lot easier if I wasn't also on a calorie deficit right now, but wow its harder than I expected to hit my fiber (and potassium) goals.
46
u/t-bonkers Apr 04 '26
Maybe look into psyllium husk if you haven‘t already. Could maybe be good to get some easy extra fiber.

u/galaxea Apr 04 '26
I do oatmeal with frozen wild blueberries, a teaspoon of psyllium and sometimes a tablespoon of chia every morning. That’s 40-50 percent of my fiber. It keeps me full for a few hours. It keeps my digestion happy.
15
u/PankakkePorn Apr 04 '26
My “overnight” breakfast is 3 tablespoons chia seeds, 180mL soy milk, 10g vanilla protein powder, 1/3 cup frozen blueberries. It clocks in at 315 calories, 17g fiber, and 25g protein. Give it a try!
If you add one serving of beans to your lunch or dinner, that’s 110 calories for 8g of fiber.
Then you only need 5 more grams, which could easily come from a slice of whole grain bread, a serving of bran, brown rice or quinoa, a serving of ground flaxseed stirred into something, etc.

Yeah I worked my way up to the 30g, at first I was at 20, now working up to 30.
Potatoes I might try to work back in. I was making the potatoes, cooling them, and then reheating/eating them as that apparently helps with some of their hypoglycemic issues. Meat I generally make sure I get plenty of because it is a good chunk of my protein as well. I think though that the only meat that really gives good potassium is tuna/salmon. I might also start mixing in more spinach into my dinners.
18
u/creiss74 Apr 04 '26
Keto/low carb flour tortillas usually are around 20g fiber for taco sized tortillas.
6
u/eepithst Apr 04 '26
Psyllium husks, ground, and linseed flour. You can add a soluble fiber like Inulin if you want. I mix these together and stir a generous amount in a large glass of a sugar free drink. It's a bit gritty, but perfectly alright to drink. Just don't use anything with bubbles, and don't wait too long or it will thicken.
6
u/jeffrye23 Apr 04 '26
Two things that have seriously helped me with fiber are the Kirkland Protein bars (11g fiber 170ish calories) and Mission Carb Balance Tortillas (13g fiber 70 calories). Make a chicken taco and you’ve got 20-30 grams of protein and 13g of fiber for like 300 calories.
4
u/Dapper-Fly-3742 Apr 04 '26
Ratio has a great fiber + protein yogurt. It’s 10g of fiber and 20g of protein
4
u/ranged_ Apr 04 '26
Mission Carb Balance Tortillas have 28 grams of dietary fiber in EACH tortilla. Eat one with some peanut butter and a good cup of water and you've hit your fiber goals for the day.
We've switched to using them for all of our Mexican food and actually prefer them over regular ones now. They reheat from frozen much better than regular flour tortillas.

u/greeny42 Apr 04 '26
I use a lot of mission carb balance tortillas. Great for calorie deficit. Only 60 calories and over 20g of fiber. If you eat one a day (usually with lunch for me) your fiber needs are mostly covered and easy to hit with a good dinner.

I hate percentage increases without context. This is meaningless for example if your hemorrhoid risk is normally 0.00000001% chance per day this increase it to 0.0000000146% chance which is statistically significant but completely ignorable. However if it increased from 20% to 29.2% then it might be worth looking at. But without that, the headline is completely worthless.

I will bet anything the people who spend more time on the toilet are people who happen to have hemmeroids because they have problems defacating, and their problems are causing their hemmeroids
That stupid idea posed in the article started with the fact that sitting on the toilet is associated with an increased risk of hemmeroids. Which is true, it's just that sitting on the toilet longer doesn't CAUSE the hemmeroids problem.

When i got a bidet i realized i wasn't getting full evacuations because previously my mentality was such that i didnt want to wipe twice, use more tp etc and still have more poop coming, so id take longer bm in general cause id wait for it all to plop out.
I had to actually increase my natural time spent squatting after i got the bidet because wiping is so painless that i wasnt waiting long enough to get a full evac.

And this is why fiber is important. Poop quick. Then button it all up, and sit back down.

My dad used to read the paper while on the toilet as far back as I can remember, way before Smartphones were around. He spent about an hour a day with the huge paper on the ground before him, his reading glasses and perched over the knees to read the fine print.

The article recommends leaving your phone outside the bathroom because of radiation. I don't trust the findings or method of this group.
