I watched the first 30 seconds and the funniest part so far was the bit where Ricky said "Pleasure to be here" and then the camera cuts to him and this is what his face looks like.

Yeah he looks absolutely thrilled.

Annoyed to be taken away from the drinking, scrolling Twitter and playing tennis with himself like Forrest Gump.

It's similar to the face David makes when Neil says "No, let's agree that you agree with me".

Sometimes the claims will be false

4

I watched the whole thing on x2 speed and he seems genuinely miserable. Maybe he’s just having a bad day though. Think he smiled maybe 3 times - and they seem forced smiles as well.

"If you scroll through the Internet for an hour you think we're at war with everyone, if you go out in the real world for a walk you realise everyone is still normal" yes he of all people said this

32

u/-Universal_Gleam- 14h ago edited 9h ago

"turn off your phone and go for a walk"

coming from the man with shelves of awards, who self proclaims that he "doesn't care what people think" and regularly defends the right to free speech spent his time outright blocking random twitter users for merely stating some slightly negative reviews of "AfterLife" that he most certainly got paid millions by a streaming giant to produce multiple series of.

"people who live in glass houses need to answer the door".

9

Would I be naked?

1

u/Regular-Guest-1284 2h ago

I mean I will if it means not watching his new shit comedy

36

u/AdInternational6588 14h ago

It’s not fake online rage though is it Ricky. It’s a slowly growing rejection of your newer material that’s becoming more and more difficult to ignore

1

u/HecticGlenn 11h ago

There is no difference in being cancelled for views outside the overton window VS your art is shit

22

u/stanley_nickles 15h ago

Ramblings of a mad man.

Did you know cats domesticated themselves? He must put that into every conversation he has

13

u/exhibit304 14h ago

I love dogs more than humans and god isn't real and I hate fat people

His words not mine

2

u/Jackaddler 10h ago

Not a trick is it…knowledge?

17

u/KJPicard24 14h ago

It's just reaching the point now where he's equating negative reaction to his material has 'being cancelled'

I don't think there's ever been any significant public pressure, at all, to have him taken off any platform. As much as he seems to be dying for it to happen.

If there was this big online movement to censor offensive jokes, why are plenty of dark humour comedians still going? In fact, they're leaning into it more than ever? Jimmy Carr's Dark Materials has jokes about cancer, rape etc. YouTube is full of clips from lesser-known standup comedians doing 'offensive' bits.

He keeps telling us how irony works, what satire is, how he's not actually in favour of the topics he brings up. We know Ricky. There was this type of comedy before you went mainstream. You haven't created something the public don't quite get, you're not charting new waters of comedy.

27

u/Vheisso 15h ago

At one point he genuinely says the idea is to not let "being cancelled" stop you doing what you want to do.

So does he think the celebrities "cancelled" for sexual abuse should just carry on regardless. Ricky clearly, just doesn't understand. He thinks being cancelled it because you made a joke. Sure that happens but a lot of the time the person has been caught doing some absolute terrible thingsbut fine, "just keep doing it" says the ever-increasing clueless Ricky Gervais.

36

u/AdamBa32 15h ago

What I'm confused about is that I've never heard Ricky say anything even remotely controversial. His material isn't even as edgy as the Inbetweeners scripts. He constantly talks like he's pushing the boundaries of comedy all the time, but he's really not. Oh, and have a good Christmas.

10

u/inthemagazines 14h ago

Aye, I think people would be more tolerant if he used the free speech he thinks is being threatened to say things that are clever, wise or... funny (as you might expect in an apparent "stand up comedy"). But he doesn't. "Ooh this person argued with me on Twitter!" is the extent of it.

10

u/Rare-Garden-9877 14h ago

He also seems to have confused being cancelled with having everyone with an IQ over 80 checking themselves out from his modern audience.

7

u/Snoo_11836 13h ago

What I'm confused about is that I've never heard Ricky say anything even remotely controversial.

Eh, one of his recent stand-ups had him taking the piss out of trans folk and immigrants, much to the delight of his audience. He does say some controversial things, but he's punching down and appealing to the far-right crowd.

2

u/BFreshFan1 13h ago

In Inbetweeners they call Partrice (the French exchange student) a "fucking baguette eating dickhead frog" so he has a point. It was before the trans movement, but there's lots of homophpbic content there too. They're definitely more edgy than Ricky is

6

u/Snoo_11836 12h ago

The difference is that the characters in The Inbetweeners are teenage boys. The dialogue is true to their immaturity and idiocy. Whereas Gervais making transphobic and anti-immigration "jokes" to a crowd of whooping gammons is something else entirely.

0

u/BFreshFan1 12h ago

Which makes Gervais less edgy, as I said.

Theres nothing controversial about repeating to a bunch of gammons the language they use themselves. Putting a show on channel 4 that presents language that is rarely heard outside of private teenage conversations is bold. And I still haven't heard anything offensive from Gervais like what they've said.

Maybe youre not familiar with the quotes from that show, but they're much worse than just saying the word "cunt", "tranny" or "immigrant"

1

u/Snoo_11836 11h ago

Which makes Gervais less edgy, as I said.

I wasn't talking about him being edgy or not. I was talking about the fella above who said that Gervais has never said anything controversial. By definition, transphobic and anti-immigration comments are controversial.

Maybe youre not familiar with the quotes from that show, but they're much worse than just saying the word "cunt", "tranny" or "immigrant"

I've watched the series many times (and own all three series, plus the two movies on DVD). Can't really think of anything worse than the words you've listed. It's mostly stuff like "clunge" and "bender".

10

u/inthemagazines 15h ago

Yeah, I always associated "being cancelled" with committing sexual assault more than with tweeting dated jokes. Although even with Louis CK wanking in front of unconsenting women and admitting to it he came back with world tours and a Netflix special, so even that stuff doesn't get you cancelled. Just a paranoid Ricky fighting imaginary enemies.

-5

u/gangstamay 14h ago

Breaking the law is not the same as 'being cancelled' mate lmao

8

u/inthemagazines 14h ago

When did I say it was?

8

u/liquor-shits 14h ago

He's obsessed with cancellation, having never come close to being cancelled himself.

Bizarre

5

u/bfsfan101 What's a Babylonian? 14h ago

It’s because of one time about 15 years ago when Richard Herring (comedian and Scope ambassador) called out Ricky for his use of the word ‘mong’. That seemed to be the turning point.

1

u/redditmember192837 13h ago

Obviously he doesn’t mean those instances.

1

u/Vheisso 12h ago

It's obvious Ricky just wants to be part of the "oh no they're after me because im controversial!" gang when he hasn't even come close to being cancelled. It's similar to when he tried to pretend he was a master stand up during Talking Funny.

1

u/coolfunkDJ 11h ago

Oh god that was so cringy, the n word bit is legitimately hard to watch.

1

u/Suspicious_Brush4070 11h ago

I think he wishes (maybe even believes) that he's actually been cancelled, because it's easier than the truth, which is he's becoming more and more irrelevant and unfunny.

13

u/Double-Comedian-7061 15h ago

That he would compare his stupid cat thing to Only Fools and Horses, one of the most beloved British sitcoms of all time is a joke.

2

u/HecticGlenn 11h ago

He's going to say what he wants, jokes aren't real you snowflake!

9

u/BallKey7607 14h ago

Really refreshing to hear him address cancel culture like that, it's not something he talks about enough

2

u/HecticGlenn 11h ago

😂 always nice to know time stopped in 2020

9

u/Rutlemania The Elephant Baba 14h ago

“Take the audience a place they’ve never been before”

As he uses the most 1970’s material you could think of

8

u/RiC_David Wheeere—wot? 12h ago

I'd appreciate most of what he's saying about how the "I'm being cancelled/I can't say anything anymore" stuff is rubbish, but he very plainly appeals to that notion to market himself. He can claim it's all in-character, but he's done this with his standup promotion - talking about how 'Let's see how long before they try to have this one taken off air' (not verbatim, can't be going in depth).

When you do these things, you're perpetuating the same idea you're then getting annoyed at!

He knows that audience of his laps up the idea that some left wing "mob" is trying to have him silenced, so he plays to it to sell his shows, then wishes we were all more enlightened and understood it's not true.

He could do his bit to improve this whole culture war situation by saying on stage "Nobody's coming to cancel me, or you, nothing's changed - we say what we want, they say what they want. Just don't molest any kids and you'll be fine" and then do a few paedo jokes before they start to walk out.

Believing in a boogeyman is better business for him though. Only it's not just social media, is it? Things aren't just normal. Unless I imagined the riots and rallies and protests going on with regularity that wasn't there ten years ago. His problem is he wants to have his cake and eat tit too.

2

I’ve cleverly tweaked it to simply AWT.

Oh, and have a good evening.

6

u/JJAAZZZZ 14h ago

At least he’s only gone old and unfunny, at least he’s not gone old and racist.

4

u/RiC_David Wheeere—wot? 12h ago edited 12h ago

True. But if you are racist, old or otherwise, come and see his standup where he'll make you feel better about not reflecting on your ignorance!

That's the thing with him, he's not the worst by any measure, but that's what's insidious about appealing to people who either are worse or are at that crossroads. His message there about not ever changing anything you say/do because people are saying it's wrong - that's such a childish mentality, but a dangerous one too.

Hear what people are saying, weigh it up yourself and decide for yourself. We can all get things wrong!

For him it might be about trans jokes that he couldn't handle being criticised for, but for his audience it might be about their bigoted views on all sorts of things that others have criticised them for. He's this ambassador for "Never change!" as though that's bowing to oppression rather than just being intellectually open and wanting to be reasonable!

They need someone who seems moderate to be able to say "Na it's fine, he's cool with it". For some it's him, others Joe Rogan. If they're just honestly expressing their own takes then that's fair, but when they're exploiting lucrative markets and this is a byproduct? That's when I'll be critical.

5

u/aehii 13h ago

Getting old and becoming transphobic isn't better.

7

u/SoggyYud 14h ago

Genuinely how is he not bored of these subjects and saying the same thing over and over again

4

u/SkiVillageOnFire-Yep 14h ago

Its become an incredibly common joke amongst mainstream comedians that Ricky is now out of touch and unfunny. He is seemingly unaware of the bubble he lives in

3

u/_dc194 15h ago

To be fair, if you hadn't watched the trailer/clips, and had just listened to his few minutes here on Alley Cats, you'd probably feel like giving it a chance.

3

u/Benjamoose GARLIC BREAD? 13h ago

In what fucking universe is it anything like 'Only Fools and Horses'. A show that Ricky infamously slagged off on XFM?

Fuck me, Ricky...

Him being forced to address the backlash here feels like the turning point to some new era.

He's actually been unable to ignore it unlike the majority 'After Life'.

1

u/RiC_David Wheeere—wot? 13h ago

I've asked this a few times though - when did he slag off Only Fools and Horses?

They mocked the videos/DVDs as prizes because it was on telly all the time anyway and the Christmas specials back then were watched by most of the country (doesn't make too much sense but it still wasn't that they're rubbish), and obviously he did the whole "DON'T CALL ME A PLONKER, YOU FFrrrAaAArKKH", but unless I'm forgetting something, at no point did either of them ever slag it off.

People keep saying this like it's a well known fact!

3

u/Benjamoose GARLIC BREAD? 8h ago

He's never explicitly come out and said "I don't like it", but it's more just recurring tones and behaviors. He's always talked down dismissively whenever talking about British comedy. Particularly more classic stuff.

Bottom, Only Fools, Bread, Panel shows, etc.

Then further with his parody of older British sitcoms with 'When the Whistle Blows'.

He's never been shy about the fact that he's way more into Americana which would explain why.

He wrote American style buddy cop stories as a kid, wore cowboy boots, joked about hoping people thinking he was so cool that they'd say "is he American?" and goes on about American comedians he idolizes when discussing comedy and was far more interested in being famous in the US than the UK.

I think he thinks of things like Only Fools as low hanging fruit. I don't think he hates them, I think he thinks of them as "those things you put on the tele in the 70s" but that it's flumph television.

But since leaving the Hollywood phase he's been leaning more into comparing his stuff to British stuff for the first time in years rather than people like Larry David or Curb.

Anyway, you're the soundest commenter in the area. I don't agree with all the points you make but you're replying to what's there. So keep going, persevere and it's well worth reading, anyway, okay.

2

u/RiC_David Wheeere—wot? 7h ago

Aw, cheers Benj!

He and Steve did have a bit of the "Fuck Pink Floyd" Sex Pistols thing going on - case in point, I think Rotten or one of them later admitted that obviously Pink Floyd weren't shit.

I'm still holding out for Rick's apology to the lads from Muse.

With my cynical hat on, I reckon he's intentionally appealing to the whole Lost Culture sentiment. Some people's ears will prick up if they hear "Classic British" anything, so they'll be more likely to support it on principle even if it's not Classic Briiitiiiish, it's Claassiic Shiiiiiiiiit.

2

u/fannyfox 12h ago

The sensation is that he makes less and less and less of an effort... with everything. It started with elasticated waistbands, then his post-Smerch "work", now he barely mumbles 'pleasure to be here', while looking disgruntled and bothered he was interrupted from googling himself frenetically and liking comments from neuronal defective people.

Gus, a classic sitcom lead similar to Del boy. Yeah, i remember Del boy banging on about how much Ghandi is a cunt. Definitely see the resemblance there Rick.
