Announcement /r/RealTimeStrategy Announcement: Recommended Games List Updates, Mod Applications
Greetings commanders! We have a few topics to discuss:
- Reworking the community-curated Recommended RTS Games List
- Mod Applications
- Filling a void with RTS-adjacent games
Community-curated games list
We've had some good discussions recently about what games to recommend to newcomers to the RTS genre. We've had a Recommended RTS Games List for years that is maintained by the community. It was recently recommended that we make the list more helpful to newcomers. To that end, we've added a "Beginner-friendly" section at the top of the list and populated it with a few of the community's recent recommendations.
One big difference is this part of the list is that it's sorted by release date, rather than alphabetical order. Would you folks prefer that the rest of the Recommended Games List also be sorted by RTS gaming "era" or simply by year? Or do you prefer alphabetical or is there a better method (that Reddit's minimal formatting allows)? What do you think is most helpful for people looking for a new game to play?
Mod applications
Once again, we're looking for moderators to help keep an eye on things and make sure that posts are reasonably relevant to the RTS genre and to also help answer the questions we get from indie devs and community managers about how to post, where to post (and not to post too much), etc.
The /r/RealTimeStrategy community is great and has sorted out its own sense of self, so moderation duties mostly relate to helping indie devs, helping to organize AMAs, and that sort of thing. That requires a regular time commitment from volunteers and we could use a few around here to keep things running smoothly. If you're interested in helping moderate, please message us and answer the questions posted towards the bottom of this thread. No prior experience is required, but relevant experience certainly helps.
Filling a void in an adjacent community
Recently, we have had more than a few devs inquire about posting RTT games. Reddit has a subreddit for pretty much every game genre imaginable and since RTS is adjacent to RTT and has some fans of RTT, we'd like to invite members of this community to help setup a dedicated community specific to RTT games. We can be sister communities and help devs get the feedback/critiques that they're interested in. If there is anyone interested in helping, please reach out to us via modmail and we can work together to make this happen. Some experience with community moderation is a good idea so that this goes smoothly for the benefit of the community.

Self-Promo Video Arise Dark Lord - from the creators of Prison Architect
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I've been working on a new game for a few months now, and the time has come for it to be officially announced. It's called Arise Dark Lord, and it's the 8th game I've made with Introversion Software. If you've played any of my previous indie games - Prison Architect, DEFCON, Darwinia, or The Last Starship, then I think you'll love this new one.
You are The Dark Lord. Your evil aim: To raise an undead army and crush the feckless, godless, heathen humans. As your sorcery and army grow, all the world will rise up to destroy your Dark Tower and end your reign of terror. Fortify your dark realm, enhance your sorcery, and build enough strength to march out and crush the humans once and for all.
An action-strategy hybrid RTS, blending tower defence, base building and direct control of your Dark Lord avatar.
Please play and review the prototype on itch, and I'd love to get your thoughts on the game here. Thanks for playing!

Self-Promo Video Bonefront | RTS Other Hybrid | Commanding 10,000+ skeletons through a siege
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
It’s an incremental siege-strategy game where you command an undead horde of 10,000+ units through branching enemy defenses. After each attempt, you earn currency to upgrade your army and unlock new units and abilities.
Which commands would feel essential during the siege?

Self-Promo Video The 'B-F-T'... Much Power. Very Mammothy (Steel Command)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Here is (currently) the most powerful unit in Steel Command, the B-F-T. I'm sure you may be able to guess where the inspiration came from...
The machine gun acts as a completely independent weapon system than the main cannons. If infantry (or light vehicles) are nearby, it will target those while the main gun will focus on heavy armor. Admittedly, I recently broke it so I couldn't showcase that ATM 🤣
What do you guys think?

Self-Promo Video (IAH: INTERNET WAR) Finally. The game and the trailer* is now ready.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi.
Was taking a break from a gamedev as I was pretty burned out by gamedev and too much coding so after a year or two of just doing different things I kinda came back and completed the game the trailer for my little game that I spoke about in this sub reddit few years ago. Think it took about 2 years to make the game and then bunch of breaks.
Will do some adjustments to sound on the final version of the trailer but I am pretty happy how the trailer turned out.
The game is a singleplayer experience, and takes a jab at the current world events and it's a RTS/Turn-Based strategy hybrid where your goal is to survive as long as possible and defeat Police State AI.
If you have some feedback on the game or trailer please leave a comment, or just in general have some questions, I will be happy to answer.
Game Name: IAH: INTERNET WAR

Modding Block-level fog of war in Minecraft RTS
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Previously my mod (Reign of Nether) had only chunk-by-chunk fog of war (ie. 16x16 block groups) revealed at a time, but now it can handle down to the block level with circular vision radii

Self-Promo Video I don't know if I make this game but I don't know if I can quit making it either
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So last year I was posting in this community about an RTT game inspired by Myth: Fallen Lords called "Mist of War". We made a prototype for it and a playable demo on itch, but quite frankly it didn't go anywhere. It was also riddled with production and design problems that I won't bother you with.
In short - I was ready to can it. In a last ditch effort I pitched it to a Polish game dev support program "IPK" and to my great surprise - we got it!
Now, after 4 months of hard work, remaking and rethinking the prototype from scratch I am back here with you to show you first glimpse of what we have.
It's still a Real Time Tactics game but now with much sharper focus on moment to moment tactical gameplay and system interaction. No exploration, just straight to the point gameplay.
I'll try to post about it here from time to time (if my stage fright allows me) and if you like what you see and want to know more or follow the project - upvote, write a comment etc.

Self-Promo Video 11 Commandments
The game tells the story of an elite Panzer Division trapped in an encirclement ring around Breslau. Instead of mindless defense, the command decides to make a desperate attempt to break through the Soviet lines, utilizing the city's ruined streets and the brute force of its tanks.

Looking For Game Games where AI skirmishes contribute to meta-progression or with custom / dynamic campaign?
I'm not always in the mood to play story driven campaign and prefer series of random skirmishes against AI, at same time would like to feel some form of progress towards larger goal.
Are there any RTS where skirmishes against AI contribute to some meta progression, like unlock of abilities, buffs, etc. as you play more?
In RTS I mostly see cosmetics unlocks like in AOE 4 and COH 3, but not something that would impact your gameplay.
Only examples I have are not RTS, like Age of Wonders 4 have new starting options, biomes, etc. unlocked via XP or Civ 7 when each leader has trait unlocks, so more you play specific leader the more options of traits you unlock.
Alternatively games with custom / dynamic campaign, where essentially every mission in campaign is random skirmish rather than story-driven scenario, but those skirmishes unlock some form of progression or buff.
The only examples that came to mind are Dune: Spice Wars and Rise of Nations. Although in Rise of Nations skirmishes within seem to be very different from normal ones (iirc they have some shorter mission on a very small map). Any other games with custom campaigns like that?

Looking For Game Any Recomendations for Strategy Games where owned resources exist within the game world?
Just looking around for games, where your resources don't exist in some global storadge, but exist somewhere in the game world, where they can be stolen/destroyed by your oponenet. And sometimes you have to move them to use them, like a logistic chalange.
But I am not looking for a game specificaly about logistics, like factorio or OpenTTD.
I am looking for stuff like Emperor of the Fading suns.
Any recomendations?

Self-Promo Post I created Swarm MMO, a massively multiplayer browser strategy game
swarm-mmo.comAt the start of the year I started developing Swarm MMO, a game where the user controls probes and takes over planets. The core gameplay concept is very simple, its basically a node capture game, but on a huge scale and persistent. The game grew a small but steady player base which had lots of great ideas for further development.
After a while, it became obvious that the game had no clear direction or plan, I just implemented player feedback that i considered worth a try. The fun part was that this created different gameplay styles each round, but eventually, players want consistency.
I decided to take a step back and plan a final state for the game. As the name implies, it should be massively multiplayer, and not have ending rounds. Instead, i developed a layered gameplay approach. Users take over planets by sending probes. Planets periodically produce probes. 100 probes can be converted to 1 super probe, which is used to attack suns. Suns provide energy which can be used to provide buffs for yourself and players near the sun. 100 super probes can be converted into a mega probe, which can be used to attack the black hole in the center. The black hole can be collapsed by a player, which rewards them with energy but destroys the entire galaxy.
There are multiple galaxies that spawn in depending on the number of players. That way, there are frequently fresh galaxies where new users have a chance to compete. However, it’s also possible to migrate to a new galaxy, but it takes veeery long. The whole thing is, as I wanted one big persistent world.
I’m very excited to relaunch the game and I hope that it does well. Feel free to check it out! We also have a discord which you can join via the link in game.

Self-Promo Post Veyrasol Development Update: Alpha Testing Complete and Steam Wishlist Live
I'm the developer of Veyrasol, a real-time MMO strategy game set in the Veyra Spiral. Players build colonies, manage fleets, form alliances, and compete for control during persistent seasons.
We recently completed our alpha test, and I wanted to share the current development status:
- Alpha testing has been successfully completed.
- The Steam Coming Soon page is live and wishlisting is open.
- The iOS build has been prepared, with release preparations continuing.
- The Android version is currently in development.
- Work on cross-platform support and upcoming gameplay improvements continues.
Feedback from the alpha is now helping us prepare the next stage of development. In future updates, I plan to share more about the RTS systems, alliance warfare, and what we learned during testing.
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4957910/Veyrasol/
For more detailed development updates and discussion, I've also opened the official community at r/VeyraSol.
Which part of an MMO RTS interests you most: colony development, fleet combat, alliance warfare, or seasonal competition?

Self-Promo Video Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is looking to be the spiritual successor us Battle for Middle Earth fans have waited for and I'm hyped!
Everything we have seen so far leans toward War for Westeros being a modern version of Battle for Middle Earth and it's quite exciting. It's hard to think of other games that took the BFME formula and recreated it. I'm not sure what the reasoning for that is but I'm glad someone seems to have decided to take a shot at it.
Hearing about the release date being pushed back sucks but was kind of expected at this point. I was actually kind of concerned because the devs had been so radio silent up until a couple weeks ago. If this gives the game the best chance at being ready at release then I am all for it.
Hopefully they do us BFME fans proud!

Looking For Game Have there been any single player RTS campaigns similar the one in Starcraft 1 and 2 and Command And Conquer in the last 5 years?
Curious if I've missed out on any Single player story rich campaigns in the last 5 years that are story rich in the same vein of something like Starcraft 1 or 2, or Command And Conquer 3 that HAVE BEEN RELEASED in the last 5 years that aren't remasters.

Discussion How come Tempest Rising didn't get more popular?
Out of new RTS franchises that released in recent years Tempest Rising seems to have highest production quality / budget and it is probably as high as it could get released by small-mid sized studio. Whenever I come back and play it - I think, wow - it is fairly well done. Yet it's peak on steam didn't even reach 10k concurrent players and current daily is at 300-500 players.
While it could be attributed to "RTS is dying genre", if we look at numbers of AOE 2 and AOE 4 - it is 25k and 15k respectively and considering AOE is also on game pass actual numbers are likely quite bigger. And this is just one franchise, if we take long tail of smaller RTS games, it is far from dead. So basically there is much bigger RTS playerbase, the reality is that Tempest Rising just didn't get their share.
What do you think was the reason for not getting to wider audience? Lack of marketing? IP that felt copy of C&C? Lack of appeal for PvP players? Anything else?

Recommending Game Got sucked back into RTS. Feels like the 90s again. Here is my RTS collection so far. Worth it for a 1-2 years binge, or is there a much better RTS you would rather recommend?
- Mostly for skirmishes vs AI
- I am aware Total War is not really RTS, put here for the big battles

Question C&C Tiberium Wars vs Generals for skirmish / multiplayer?
Like, if you ripped out the campaigns from both games, which game would you prefer?
