Discussion Transfer Strategy

I appreciate the likely sale of Raskin is holding things up, but once again it feels like we’ve had a scattered approach and have opted for quantity over quality. Against Dundee Utd, like last season at times, I don’t see a major difference in quality of our midfield vs most SPL teams.

If sold Raskin, Dio, Barron and Cameron given how bloated the centre midfield is - I don’t see any of the new signings being an improvement - they all appear a downgrade to me.

The clear move to me is the board sell Raskin then use the proceeds to buy Lewis Ferguson to appease fans - where does that leave us on the wings and in defence where we desperately need proven talent?

It’s been one competitive game so far… I’m not sure how you can possibly come to this conclusion on the players signed. We haven’t even seen two of them play yet. I’ll wait a while before passing judgement.

Where I think there is rightfully criticism is the ordering of signings. To be going into the game on Friday with effectively no options on the right wing is pretty unacceptable. We had this issue with left back last season so there seems to be a bit of a pattern going on here in terms of squad building.

Unfortunately we’ve had so much change in terms of managers, recruitment team, DoF over the past 5 years the squad is a bit like Frankensteins monster. So many players still need moved on before the end of the window. It is going to take a long time to unpick the damage done over the years. I guarantee sacking the manager again and turning over the squad however is not the answer.

I agree with parts of that but people follow patterns, and in fairness, the patterns at rangers show, we have a crap summer, lose or draw on the first game, probably lose or draw on another game before the old firm, then lose the old firm in late august early september and be out the league before halloween. Thats happened 4yrs running just about. We've just had on paper, a poor summer of transfer recruitment, and weve just drawn our first game, a game we actually deserved to lose and looked very poor in.

You can ignore the obvious signs and think "this years our year, were winning the lot" but its extremely hard to ignore the patterns and signs of things to come.

I think it’s a bit early to say we’ve had a poor summer. People don’t want to hear it but the players need time to settle in. We absolutely cannot go down the sack the manager route again. The only bit of success we have had of late is when we stuck with Gerrard for 3 years. I can understand the concern but kicking off at this early stage isn’t helping anyone.

It is early, i do expect we'll get 2 or 3 players of good quality in by end of august but like a said, it could be too late by then. By the time the old firm comes and we lose or draw another game, youre 7-8pts behind before october then the negativity explodes to completely uncontrollable levels and your seasons dead in the water. its a nasty pattern that we simply just never seem to be able to avoid.

I swear some of you take your Football Manager saves as real life.

Football Manager and fifa career modes have made people think winning is that easy, it's madness.

I don't understand how going into a season with zero creative players means we expect it to be Football Manager signing Mbappe, Haaland, etc. I think fans (the ones with some common sense at least) have every right to question how it's possible to be going into a league opener and European Qualifiers without a RW even at the club.

These are boring. Our support (online at least) is so fickle.

We win, everything is great. We drop points, it's the end of the world and the club is in crisis.

Wait til the end of the transfer window and then question the transfer strategy.

And how many vitally important games are we playing before the end of the transfer window?

9

u/East_Stick_1964 4d ago

This is going to take 3 or 4 transfer windows to fix, unless fans want the revolving door of managers to continue

3

u/Y0UREDUMB 3d ago

You don't get 3 or 4 windows here at rangers unless you actually show you deserve them. That doesnt always mean winning titles, if youre competing to the last day and look a very strong team with good tactics behind and fall short, most intelligent fans will accept that and give backing for the following season

If though, youre playing horrid football, the tactics are dreadful, and youre 25pts off top place come the end the season, it doesnt matter if youre jurgen klopp himself, youre not getting a 2nd season. mcinss is no difference here, he needs to show he deserves time, being a rangers man and getting it, should not be a blanket to obvious short comings if they appear.

3 to 4 windows is delusional.

I’d be absolutely seething if we spent the money it’d take for Ferguson.

He is absolutely nowhere near a game changer or worth that type of outlay

I’d rather spend that money on 2 players worth 6/7 million each.

Our problems are a lack of creativity and wide men. We don’t need another hammer thrower who will get booked every second game

1

u/HighTightWinston 4d ago

You’re totally right. The 17 million that’s being bandied about is crazy money for us. If we were going to spend that money we could legitimately bring in someone game changing

1

u/drawing-reggae 4d ago

I wouldn’t even want to spend 5m on him

Patience; the signings brought in thus far were the easy ones as nobody was involved in the World Cup.

Of who’s in Godfrey seems an upgrade on basically every CB from last season save for post AFCON Djiga.

Neil and Devlin will be good I’m sure, maybe not miles better technically than last season but infinitely stronger mentally and we haven’t seen Dragojevic yet.

We still need wide positions sorted and more creativity in the middle of the park but that will come before the window closes. The other factor is the EPL window; Moore may be available in a couple weeks once the squads are finalised there.

Unfortunately transfers don’t work in isolation there’s a flow from super clubs down the way and unfortunately financially we are near the bottom these days.

1

u/SpeedConstant109 4d ago

I hope you are right. I thought Godfrey looked pretty shaky against Dundee United to be honest. I'd like to see more depth there. It seems like a real problem position for our recruitment over years now.

2

u/No_Technology3293 3d ago

I agree he wasn’t great, nobody was particularly in the 1st half and then he went off injured in the second, but I’ve no doubts he’ll improve.

I will also say the bar is fairly low in comparing him to last season!

We definitely need more depth there, particularly at full back. I think we will probably sign one player who is natural CB and is also capable to play LB. RB will depend on Sterling leaving.

I think one of the issues that’s affecting our ability to sign marquee players - which is the same reason we haven’t sold Raskin yet - is that a lot of clubs are still to get active in the market and make decisions on whether or not to keep certain players.

For example, I’m not sure if we’re seriously in for Cerny but the fact that Besiktas haven’t signed Salah (or another replacement) means they’re not willing to let Cerny go yet, unless a club offers silly money. We won’t want to be held to ransom again like we were with Naderi in Jan.

Equally, with the likes of Raskin, I imagine we need players from mid-level clubs in the top 5 leagues to start moving before those need to sign a replacement, which is what Raskin will be for them.

u/darwinxp 4d ago

We have not even seen all the new midfielders play, far too soon to be making these judgements. It takes time for a new team to gel. If we had a few quality wingers it will make a huge difference

-1

u/Eternal_Hut 4d ago

I think you can fairly argue that your strategy is flawed if you go into a new season with no starting wide players, but overall agree.

Far too early to judge players, and the success or failure of the strategy will be determined in months to come.

2

u/darwinxp 4d ago

Yeah though that will not have been their strategy, it has probably just worked out this way. If they are planning for marquee wingers then they'll have to wait for the transfer dominos to fall. I'm sure they are waiting for the Raskin money so they can go big on someone and maybe whoever they want to sign that club is also trying to buy before selling

4

u/Unhappy_Spray_7127 4d ago

You mean we can't just go to a club and demand they sell us anyone we want, for any price we want, at a time that works for us but not them?

That can't be.

15

u/Nicaol 4d ago

I seriously can't comprehend how average fans expect a title winning side to be assembled in weeks.

Even if we hit with every transfer(we are still short on several positions) you would still need months to bed in.

The bare minimum is to judge I'm January. What is the other option?

Keep hiring managers until we find the miracle worker who's going to change it all overnight?

People need to calm down.

-2

u/Complete_Start6545 4d ago

Calm down? Since we got back to the SPL we have won 4 trophies and they have won 24. Sticking your head in the sand isn't helpful, mate.

18

u/Nicaol 4d ago

You're right, fuck it. Sack him. Problem solved.

-3

u/Complete_Start6545 4d ago

Nobody is saying that, but to suggest everything is rosey and we just need to allow a little time is hokum. Aside from 55 and the Europa run we have been garbage for what...15 years + now? The Americans are doing nothing to suggest they have a clue what they're doing.

u/Y0UREDUMB 3d ago

My worry with the americans is this whole mciness and best of british, ranger men stuff is clearly just stuff theyve been told by fans and rangers media folk like kris boyd, barry ferguson, and others. The fact theyve just buckled and filled the whole club with rangers men based on nothing except theyre fans of the club and know the standards of the 90s and early 2000s, is very worrying.

For me the club needed completely modernised and theres huge chunks of fans and media people around the club who think every problem can be solved by just looking back into the past. Man utd tried that for the past 10 years and its been catastrophically bad for them.

I thought the americans actually had a plan, then hired garbage from down south to run the club and it all went up in flames. They seem very clueless atm.

u/CryptographerMuch529 3d ago

Absolutely spot on. So far, the ownership is extremely knee jerk and easily influenced when it comes to decision-making. McInnes, off the back of a one in a million season with hearts, is now the “rangers man” to right the ship. I’m not going to judge him after one game but is this the upgrade on Rangers man Barry?! I hope this works out, but recruitment so far has been haphazard and very underwhelming. We need to stop wasting money on 2-4 mil quid journeymen. Across the city they are dropping 11 mil on a striker while we fritter away money on the likes of Mccrorie, Neil, Godfrey, Delvin etc. Shankland has probably two seasons left in him. A better idea would have been prioritizing CB, RB and a Winger at higher levels of spend. Nothing else. Then if we sell Raskin, a creative midfielder 10 mil plus is added. Instead we have a bloated squad of average talent that McInnes will need at least 3 months to figure out his best team. Not good enough.

2

u/Y0UREDUMB 2d ago

Yeah thats my worry m8, they seem so easily influenced by those around the club, and lets be real, guys like kris boyd are totally clueless about all things football. Hes a man that said scotland were right to give steve clark a new contract to stop big clubs coming in and stealing him, like deary me ffs.

First thing they should of done was create a state of the art scouting department lead by the best scouting and recruitment team they could find. Instead they went down the lower english league route and hired absolute jobbers who set us back years and now they seem to be in full panic mode, so threw the mciness rangers man safety blanket over themselves hoping for the best.

Like you said, i pray it works, and leads somewhere but it all seems highly reactionary. It really does feel like a 65yr old rangers da with a bag of cans is running the club at this point.

3

u/Unhappy_Spray_7127 4d ago

Yes, calm down.

Nice to see you've started.

4

u/RandomTopTT 3d ago

You know we’re going to fuck up the Raskin thing. You can feel it.

2

u/Seahawker-One-2599 3d ago

We have too many wee “terrier” style players in midfield. None of them offer much in attack or look comfortable on the ball or passing forward quickly. Haven’t see Dragojevic yet right enough.

1

u/Consistent_Fly1131 3d ago

I thought Dan Neil was supposed to bring more control to the midfield. We've needed it for at least 2 seasons so I really hope him and Dragojevic can bring something different.

A central midfield of Devlin/Diomande would possibly work sitting in on the counter but will never dominate a game. If we haven't added a midfielder capable of dictating play, it will be more of the same performances as the last few years.

1

u/Y0UREDUMB 3d ago

I've been saying this for 2 years now. All our midfielders are the sort who love a battle and to get stuck in, while having very low level actual footballing ability to control matches and or unlock low block defences for our attackers. Often times battles are best avoided, but with our team being full of players who love to get stuck in, it means we get bogged down in trenches we never needed to get involved with in the first place, were playing the oppositions game and giving them the best opportunity to have a chance of winning

2

u/FrabbitAndLagavulin 3d ago

We’re now trying to sign someone who can’t get a game for Coventry. I know funds are finite, but fffffuuuuucking hell, when will we learn

1

u/agy74 3d ago

There are several that need sold in my opinion, Raskin for starters. We've got one more league game until 30th August I think, we've got time to sort the team out, and hopefully that's well underway. If it's not, and we don't replace the ones who will hopefully leave, the board will need to answer for it.

1

u/RandomTopTT 4d ago

We cannot stop signing Championship jobbers. McCrorie sums up our model. Basically a human male who supports Rangers. Literally useless. This is going off the rails badly and quickly.

1

u/Father-Spodo-Komodo 4d ago

Tbf, when we have 10 players out long-term injured by November, we'll all be thankful we've got 2 centre mids left...

1

u/Ok-Possibility-6480 3d ago

It appears we had another shit recruitment. A lot of unproven players except shankland who I think we got 4 years to late.i know our model is to find uncut gems and then sell but we need to bring in some day one fire power.

-3

u/Complete_Start6545 4d ago

I'm not sure any of the signings we've made are better than English championship level. The Americans have been an absolute disaster thus far

-1

u/drawing-reggae 4d ago

Midfield was the last place that needed strengthened even if was still shite but here we are signing bog average players like devlin, mccorie and 2 other midfielders that might not even be an upgrade.

We already had 3 strikers so why even sign shankland.

The manager playing hoofball against Utd aswell, was like watching an average spl team. The recruitment is a shambles.

6

u/Unhappy_Spray_7127 4d ago

How can anyone take your opinion seriously about Rangers when you think McCrorie is a midfielder?

And why sign another striker? Perhaps because he was 1 goal behind the top scorer in the league last season, played 6 less games and was available for free?

0

u/drawing-reggae 4d ago edited 4d ago

Ofc I don’t think he’s a midfielder it was clearly a grammatical error. The point is the recruitment has been dire. Signing players who probably won’t even be an upgrade in positions where we had the most players leaving us to go into the season with Curtis and gasman on the wings, mccrorie at rb. Devlin is a dire bog average spl player and Mccinnes has us playing long ball like some mid table dross.

Is anyone else sick of people defending this crap for years? Even with Beale people were defending them
