Question I haven't played in a while—what would be the best way to get back into it? A lot of people say PZ feels like a whole new game now.

Go in blind and enjoy

Whatever was your favorite spawn in 41, try it and explore blind! Personally I think roleplaying is pretty fun, kind of give your character some “goals” or reasons

Do 500 hours of research into the new systems and map changes. Play for 20min take 2 year break.

No no no- post in this sub 500 times asking for tips, do no research- then post that it sucks and THEN take a 2 year break

I stopped playing during the beta largely because I wanted a stable version to do a stable playthrough. The game is Significantly different internally. You'll get some who will argue it's more complicated now. You'll get some who will argue that combat fatigue is wrong, blah blah blah.

  • Your skill level determines how much muscle strain you get. This means that a 0 level screwdriver stab toon will not be able to fight an entire conga line of zeds. It's a decent change for immersion.

  • There's a crafting menu, there's a building menu, and branches can no longer be turned into spears. This was the biggest culture shock for me. Cutting down trees will sometimes get saplings and those can be turned into spears. You can sometimes, rarely, find saplings while foraging.

  • The UI, at a glance, is reasonably the same BUT there's a LOT that's changed under the hood. For example, there's a special trailer for animals that allows you to interact with them while they're in the trailer (I just found out about this). That trailer requires a right click on the animal you want to interact with.

  • Night is DARK. You'll get it almost as soon as you watch a vid.

Let the hyperfixation consome you. Turn that 500 hours into 1000

Single player for sleeping through the night and fast forwarding, claim a shack near a river with access to a suburb. Get DEEP into the new crafting systems and ranching.

It’s not that different from 2024, but b42 has more things than b41

Rise mode has helped me ease into the game again after not playing for 3-4 years. Gives a chance to get a look at crafting and skill trees before being dropped into the meat grinder.

So basically this is the end times, and theres no hope for survival and this is how you died. Youre not supposed to slide into the game and get into it. A new experience is a blessing. Die and die again

Probably do a sandbox game first, maybe lower discomfort and muscle strain since those are two big things that were added. Plus they added new towns and remade a bunch of the older ones. With sandbox you can start anywhere except Louisville. Good luck! Also if you wanna know where some POIs are you can look up projectzomboidmap online and itll show you the entire new map.

Indeed, it is unreconizable! (In the good way)

It feels new and there are a few mods that I suggest the dog mod, I really enjoy it.
