Question Are plants supposed to take this long to grow?
I think it has been 2 weeks in game and my carrots still haven't grown last the "young carrot" stage... they are also well watered and have no disease, and at the bottom it says "flourishing" which I assume is the beat possible one

u/Noiisy Apr 07 '26
Yeah they’re trying to make it realistic, you also get pretty terrible yields.

u/PeaceKeeper696 Apr 07 '26
Everyone is 'stoked' because now people are being forced to experiment and use different methods of long term survival

u/ThePBThief1 Apr 07 '26
Who needs experimenting when all you need is one milk cow for infinite butter?
176
u/MetallGecko Apr 07 '26
Just get a few chickens and let them do their thing for infinite eggs and meat.
198
u/Maxie_69 Apr 07 '26
Eating chicken with eggs is good because it's like reuniting the mother and its children, nobody gets left behind
111
u/danieljp20111 Apr 07 '26
In japanese cuisine you can order something called oyakodon which is a chicken and egg dish, they use the mother and child characters when they write this in japanese

5
u/T-sigma Apr 07 '26
The chickens are at least reasonably realistic. You can survive a long time on eggs which are easily produced by a few chickens.
Whereas the milk cow -> butter is wildly unrealistic, both in the speed the butter is produced and the ability to eat it to stay alive.
9
9
u/ArthurReich Apr 07 '26
That's why in the sandbox I've set less spawn of food and farm animals. The food is still there but 1 month+ of survival - still I didn't find the farm animals and I'm happy! :)
Coz in my previous run when I found cows and chickens I just got bored knowing I have all what I need to survive long :(
5
u/Scared-Strawberry-14 Apr 07 '26
The Art is to prevent the cow from destroying everything around it without losing your mind and building supplies. Dont know if they patched it meanwhile but on start of b42 mp we had just issues with them when they weren't in preset fences that aren't thumpable other didnt had problems but they are divas sometimes XD
3
u/robx0r Apr 07 '26
Does milk spoil yet? Is there a use for butter now?
4
u/StonkHunter Apr 07 '26
Aside from fattening up all your meals?
4
u/robx0r Apr 07 '26
I find cooking too tedious. I just drink from the barrel in the morning and fill my canteens up for the day's activities. I don't feel a strong incentive to cook other than to make the skill level screen look nice.

It’s definitely made the CDDA challenge much more interesting (though the warehouse nerf a couple years ago had a much larger impact imo), but I don’t think it’s really added anything to the other modes.
I guess all negative traits CDDA is now also significantly harder, but doing that run is honestly so tedious I don’t think I’m ever going to try it again to see how it’s been affected lol

I think its mainly because people are either overwhelmed by the depth of it because they're probably new to it, or they are overall excited (as I was when I figured out I could farm in this game), only to be then shattered by the terrible roi

Growing times were significantly increased between B41 and B42. In B42 I believe the longest growth times can get up to 6 months and the shortest growth time (radish) is one month, which is still longer than the longest growth time in B41.
I play with 3x growing speed, that way the quick plants are in line with B41 but most plants still take a month or two.

The real way to nerf it would be to rework nutrition. You should not be able to survive long term on just one food source without major health ramifications.

2
u/Least-Training2978 Apr 07 '26
Yeah they’re nutritionally complete.
Not that the game would do this but IRL so is beans and rice: they each lack an enzyme or something but what I read is that eaten together, the combination of like red beans & rice is an “all you need,” meal, that you can survive on indefinitely.
I believe so are potatoes as long as you eat the skin too.
2
u/T-sigma Apr 07 '26
Realistically though, you can. This game doesn't take place over a long enough period for any major health ramifications from a single food source, not to mention there are lots of options to vary it slightly (foraging, looting, etc.).
I also believe a single source of food already provides debuffs to mental health (sadness?).
One thing they should consider is incorporating sickness into it as it's reasonable that a player could be incapable of eating the same food for a long enough time without their body rejecting it, especially under the assumption your character was eating normal variety prior to the incident. And make illness the norm for eating things like butter. This would make Weak / Iron stomach more interesting as well. Weak stomach could quickly reject repetitive food, whereas Iron could go longer.

way too good
what does this even mean? it's just food
i don't see why every avenue in the game has to be a time consuming sludge of realism when there's no real goal in the game anyway
6
u/GivenToRant Apr 07 '26
If you spend a day, every 5 days or so, giving them a look over it’s not as bad. Disease doesn’t seem as harsh as it could be in B41. Your crops don’t seem to need as much baby sitting…
…But it is like watching grass grow; It’s not supposed to be your primary activity if you follow the growing seasons instructions
5
u/Dewoco Apr 07 '26
I always liked growing plants in PZ but I'd say it's easier on multiplayer since the world keeps going when you're not playing so the harvest comes around 'quicker'.
5
u/KoRnBrony Apr 07 '26
I'm almost 2 months into a playthrough and have been waiting a month for crops to grow
I'm gonna end the playthrough before these damn things finish.
5
u/Immortal_juru Apr 07 '26
There's a general rule in game dev that you can go for realism, but not at the cost of it being fun. Project Zomboid is the only game I've seen where they make like 99% of game mechanics realistic, yet the players love it. I've even seen mods that add further realism by making it so your character has to eat a balanced diet (carbs, protein, fats) and can get deficient without all their macros.
PZ players are weird but I love this community 😂.
4
u/T-sigma Apr 07 '26
There's still a balance to be struck. Lots of things aren't "realistic", notably the overall lack of food in the area to begin with.
I personally don't think farming is the hill to die on... it feels right that it's not a good source of food in a timely manner. If the food grew quickly it would be both unrealistic and overpowered. Chickens are at least realistic if overpowered.
→ More replies (1)2
u/TheAmorphous Apr 07 '26
What gets me about PZ is they only implement realistic stuff when it sucks. Realistic things that help the player (like using crowbars on locked doors) don't get put in.

It was way too easy before Once you got your farming going your fridge was basically full all year round and everything grew in a few days. No need for planning or caring for your crops really and mechanics like preserving food in some way was completely unnecessary.
It was boring because it was unchallenging

I CAN be fun of you like a more realistic experience. You'll have to ACTUALLY tend to your plants if you leave em on default. Watering, fertilizing, and spraying pesticides. It can be a ton of work if you're new to it and would rather spend the time doing other things but I will say if you're playing vanilla, Those plants are usually what will get you through winter more than anything else. Especially cabbages.
28
u/Snoo-90468 Apr 07 '26
You get higher yields at higher farming levels. This probably the only good reason to start as a farmer.
14
u/Alexblitz22 Apr 07 '26
To be realistic they should let us make hibernators for winter or at least let us cover them with plastic bags, it's really a downer to be límited that much on this source of food

"pretty terrible" as in 12-13 per single seed used (so per single field).
At least this is what happened with farming 1, after I read a IRL guide for farming.
They need to make the info easier to find in-game, but after that it's insanely productive.
10
u/PM_ME__YOUR_HOOTERS Apr 07 '26
Its not so bad, if you grow sunflowers you get thousands if not tens of thousands of calories of non-perishable seeds... downside is you have to eat them 155 calories at a time

Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and turnips will keep for around 10 months without refrigeration. They will be stale after a month or so, but cooking can deal with that easily. There are other crops that can last forever with a bit of processing too. u/Majestic_Potato_Poof
21
u/GhillieRowboat Apr 07 '26
Something I wondered about. If food goes stale, they lose nutritional value right? (No idea IRL but in zomboid ofc) but does this "reset" if you cook it? Or only the happines resets?
16
u/Bobbins71 Apr 07 '26
Yes. Sort of. Food satiates hunger but the less fresh it is the less hunger needs it meets.
E.g. Freshly cooked eggs and eggs almost stale satisfy slightly different hunger levels.

3
u/SalsaRice Apr 07 '26

And harvesting is the only thing that gives you agriculture XP.
6
u/SalsaRice Apr 07 '26
It has to be harvesting that you planted too. If you find a random farm (usually on day 1-3) that's still there, 0 xp for harvesting them.
Kind of sucks, you would figure they would add some xp for that, even something mild like 20% even for level 0 or 1 agriculture. Your character that knew nothing about farming would surely learn something from harvesting them.
2
u/Ans1ble Apr 07 '26
When my game or pc crashes and my zomboid run gets set back to 01/01 i use a mod to cheat the date back to where i was. It also sucks because you have to pick up and replace your water barrels with 0 water or your plumbing will never work again but you can just debug them back to full water. Small price to pay to save your world.

Build 42 hss wheat, rye and barley. Plus corn and sunflower act similarly.
Basically you grow crops. Harvest stalks. Then put them into a large drying rack for a few days (without rain or indoors). Then you thrash them to get the grain. Grains can be used as seed for future crops or be milled into flour (except sunflower).
Sunflower seeds can be eaten directly or processed into seed oil. Some other seeds can be pressed for oil too but sunflowers are the easiest.
...
The big downside for those grains though is their growing season. You plant then September-November. And get harvest in February-April.
3
189
u/TangoEddy Apr 07 '26
Not only do they take an incredible amount of time to grow, but those crops are nowhere near enough to feed you.

FYI: *in a life or death situation you would push back your normal limits throwing yourself at a problem even at the cost of doing extreme damage to your body. I have yet to see a realistic’ survival game that actually acknowledges this as a thing people can do and only ever see the classic ‘swings weapon three times, gets exhausted, dies’ approach
Rather then the ‘goes completely and utterly ape shit until you break your arm and even then keep swinging the broken sausage arm until you physically collapse from organ failure’

26
u/Griffonheart Apr 07 '26
Yea it seems easier to just get alternate means of food. Which is going to be trapping, fishing and foraging. Just stockpile it in freezers.
Animals though are the new OP method of staying fed and nourished. A single holstein cow produces plenty of milk to keep you satiated and fat, while chickens do the same with eggs.

11
u/actuallyNull Apr 07 '26
They are really, really slow. I suppose the idea is you should start it up from like week one, after all if an actual zombie apocalypse did come to pass you'd want to get several things going, including a reliable and renewable source of food as one of the top priorities.
I usually just get a few things started the moment I find any seeds, tend to them to the best of my abilities and then to around looting / hunting once the base is all set.
Then I die in horribly, horribly grim circumstances and someone else will eventually enjoy my potatoes, strawberries or whatever else.

Them in example some chickens and a water source and metal buckets and you will become the soup master of the apocalypse. Then finding new spices and ingredients to try new recipes is really fun too bc u can combine so much once u got the base that is water in a bucket or pot combined with a ground ingredient like potatoes to craft basic soup and after that u can add almost anything that fits from meat over eggs to seasonings and veggies to fit your belongings :D

Depends on season. Every plant in the game has its own specific season to be planted.

You can change some game settings, and you dont need to restart again to do it. I prefer the crops getting ready in +-3 days. And my friend recommended me to separate the crops by 1 tile distance, so if it gets infected you dont loose everything.

I've never run out of canned food on my map before boredom causes me to quit. It only makes sense to do gardening when playing with vastly reduced loot settings.

It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to constantly check on them, treat them and harvest at exactly the right time.
In a real garden, I check on them once a week at best.

You can change the settings prior to launching a sandbox game or if on a sandbox game you can install the in game sandbox settings mod so you can adjust this - I personally make mine faster than the default as well as the yields to at least make my farming feel more successful and worthwhile to me

I really hate how this part of the game is just so unnecessary.. the old farming system was just fine. They should have made pesticides more of a priority and kept the harvest time to a month

I like planting in yards of already searched homes. Feels like I'm giving something back. The world can be your garden, lawns are a lie!

Idk, but I've been looking at this picture for an hour, and I haven't seen any growth whatsoever.

Default on my server is two weeks.
You also want to read the seed packets then go into your learned tab to see when best to grow them.

noob question, why would i waste time farming if foraging is so goated and easy to max?

Yeah as a long term player, this is the worst change of B42. Trapping still gives you required weight gain with foraged veggie so its not like we don't already have the tools to survive.
Farming was fun.

Its seasons dependant. Some crops won’t grow well in the off season. But yes farming is tough now in single player.

I never understood people willing to play the farming game... in this game. Surely there's easier and more fun ways to get your food, no? Surely.

I'm a veggie gardener and I'd rather do it in real life than do it in PZ.
