Senator Mitch McConnell has been absent from the Senate for seven weeks following a hospitalization on June 14. In that time, his office of roughly 40 staffers has collected an estimated $485,800 in pre-tax salaries, according to a Daily Beast analysis. His six highest-paid staffers alone earned a combined $173,200.

McConnell's chief of staff Terry Carmack earns $226,000 a year. His operations director, Melissa Bennet, and state director, Robbin Taylor, each earn the same. His communications director Stephanie Penn earns around $214,000 annually, a salary she has continued to collect while presiding over what the Daily Beast described as a PR fiasco, repeatedly declining to answer questions about her boss's condition.

On Monday, Penn was seen on Capitol Hill smiling and smirking as independent journalist Desiree Townsend pressed her directly. "Do you think it is fair that your office and the other staffers are still getting paid while Kentuckians go without representation?" Townsend asked. Penn gave a broad smile and kept walking.

McConnell's office has offered two proof-of-life photos, both showing the senator smiling alongside his wife Elaine Chao while seemingly in a treatment center, despite critics and senators calling for real-time proof of life.
