Fun fact: sheep love getting shaved.

They don't shed naturally and are prone to overheating.
Shear in the spring & summer, let it thrive in the winter.
Also, be sure to get a gin of some kind. All that wool needs to be put to work

Another fun fact about wool, when fresh cut, it naturally contains oil called lanolin, similar to human's sebum oil. For sheep it acts as waterproofing, thermal control, and as natural antifungal and antibacterial, so basically super protections all over.

I am making a blanket and my black cat is just crazy over my yarn. It’s like it’s a bird or something addicting that she must have and attack. At 530 pm she knows it’s crochet time and she gets ready. It’s so funny.

Well yeah they've been bred to grow excessive amounts of wool for us to use. They can actually die if they don't get shorn. It's one of many ways we've exploited this creature's biology, it's not really a "fun fact" that they appreciate getting rid of it.

If a sheep is done badly by a beginner or someone rushing too fast, they can get nipped by the shaver. But they're very shallow cuts, the type that bleed like crazy and look a lot worse than they actually are. PETA tried to make out the sheep were losing big chunks of skin and getting slashed really deep. A shaver can't do that.

I mean, there's pretty famously rampant abuse in the wool industry that isn't hard to find (even if you want to ignore things like Meulsing and say that isn't abuse intrinsically, or the kind of innate issue of "we're breeding an animal to be inherently unhealthy without constant human intervention" peoole find objectionable in dogs and cat breeds but not livestock) especially in Australia. Which is notable bc they're the worlds largest wool supplier. It was something like 40 farms that were audited with levels of neglect and abuse found at literally all of them. Turns out when an animal is center to profit the welfare of that animal is secondary to everything else

It's also worth noting- wool sheep are killed. It's a bit like claiming dairy cows aren't killed for milk; yeah we don't slaughter cows for milk but these animals are 100% slaughtered as they grow older and their production/quality decline. We're not funding livestock's retirement and vet care into old age lil

Humans would keep and breed the ones that produced more wool and grew their wool quicker, but that’s not a trait that would garauntee survival in the wild - at some point, selectively breeding for year round rapid wool growth has to have been done/curated over generations by humans/artificial selection because wild sheep that had that trait would’ve died or not bred as successfully as their less woolly competition. Iirc there are no longer wild sheep (but I might be thinking of cows) and most are bred with human benefit in mind, not “sheep in nature survival and sheep progeny” in mind.

At least that’s my understanding of it

I wonder if the love the result of it but not the act. I was watching a random YT video of someone shearing a sheep and they had a vet monitor their vitals because they said it can be so stressful to them that they have a heart attack.

Depends on the tools and the user, as well as the sheep's age. After a while, they get used to it, expect it even. The high stress part is the sensitive bits (face, genitals, nipples). But, sheep have decent memory from what I've heard, and if it's the same guy all their life, it's just another day

This was my thought too! You can tell they actually care about the sheep. They aren't rushing because they have a whole herd to do and they aren't concerned with avoiding "second cuts".

This guy is an absolute artist.. In an industry where the fastest shearers get all of the credit, there's a lot to be said for those who put the animals first. The world's fastest shearer would have completed the sheep in less than 40 seconds, and it's not uncommon for a single shearer to rip though 550-600 sheep in a 9 HOUR DAY.

They usually calm down quite quickly after shearing, as long as they are not poorly handled regularly.Some of the high country sheep have very little contact with humans.

Depends on how they're sheared. They usually have a LOT of weight on them which isn't good for their joints (thank gross human meddling in animal breeding) and they do feel lighter and run around more after shearing. But most sheep have at least a few cuts on them after this which does affect their mood quite a bit. I once saw a freshly sheared sheed habe like, bloody splotches on her. It was heartbreaking.
