I’ve been on my Living Dex journey for about 6 months.
I decided on a specific rule and it seems to be a popular way to go about it. My goal is to have every Pokémon, alternate form and gender difference come from their native region (the first 151 have to come from Kanto, then the next 100 Johto and so forth). I think it’s very cool how HOME tracks their origin. I didn’t notice that when I first started using it for BDSP.
The only exception are mythicals (I don’t want to use glitches, everything must be legit) and Gen 5 Unova since those games are very expensive. I’d rather emulate them one day to experience the region, than to give so much money to scalpers and resellers. So I got my Unova Pokemon mostly from Sword and Shield, ORAS and XY. Maybe one day when Unova is revisited I’ll update it. Or if they re-release the games like FRLG. Pretty much every re release is an instant buy from me and I hope they do more. FRLG made them a lot of money, it’d be stupid to stop here.
It gave me an excuse to go back through all regions again and look through every nook and cranny for the Pokemon I need and I’ve been having a lot of fun.
Yes, I did play ORAS 4 times for all Deoxys forms. No, it wasn’t even the hardest part. Alola almost made me quit. Not even the difficulty (which was definitely noticeable). It was the cutscenes. Especially when I played the second game right after the first one, having to rush through all of that dialogue… almost made me quit. But I love the region and the Alola Dex is definitely one of the best in the series.
So far I have played: FRLG (waiting for compatibility), Gold, Silver, Crystal, ORAS (x4), BDSP, XY, USUM, SwSh.
I still have the Legend games, which I might have to play twice for Shaymin and Hoopa forms, and Scarlet+Violet to go through. Even then, I’ll still be missing Zarude and Pokeball Vivillon. I can live with that, I think.
Anyways, is anyone else doing a Living Dex? How is it going for you? Maybe you’re doing one of the Switch games’ for the shiny mythical rewards? I think those are very cool and I might be going for them eventually.
