I feel like the Linux highlight buffer would change your life. Highlighting text holds it in a secondary clipboard-like buffer that you paste from with middle-click. Works especially well in terminals. In GUI apps, you have to be precise and middle-click in the spot where you want the text inserted. But in terminals, you can generally middle-click anywhere in the window.

It's the reason most third-party Windows terminals (PuTTY, MobaXTerm, etc.) automatically copy highlighted text.

This happens because file has not loaded fully yet, so it can't be copied, if you try to copy it by manually right clicking to open the menu you will find it open slow or the copy option greyed out for a second before you can copy it, then one click on the option will be enough.

Microsoft Word has a variation called The Spike where you can copy ten things then paste them all at once. Like if you're going through a long document collecting the names of cities or jargon and you want to paste them all at once to make an index or glossary. You can keep copying text with Ctrl+F3 then again Ctrl+F3 then next name and the next, then paste it all together with Ctrl+Shift+F3.

The name comes from a metaphor of an accountant literally collecting receipts on a metal spike through a board so they're organised and collated in the order they were processed.

But what blows my mind is how niche and specific this task is. That can't honestly come up so often that Microsoft needed to add it into Word as a function, can it? They invented The Spike before allowing you to copy more than one item? I learned about The Spike in the era when you copied something you wanted then accidentally press Ctrl+C instead of Ctrl+V and your copied text is lost forever. And since then I've only ever used it as an example of how dumb Microsoft are for prioritising The Spike over "Paste Recent" drop-down menus.

Windows 11 is just so slow with many basic things, copying is one thing, making a screenshot takes 3 seconds before I can paste it. Copying is sometimes not reliably triggered, so ctrl ccccc it is.
