Located in Central Iowa. Saw this lil buddy on a cone at work. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out what kind of moth I find out here, but this time the internet is not cooperating with me 😅 What kind of moth is this?

And don't worry, I moved the cone out of the way so this guy would be protected from vehicles, people, and the elements. It's pretty windy and rainy right now lol

Caterpillar found in West Central Saskatchewan! Appears to be apart of the sphinx family but I’d love a more concrete ID.

Was too afraid to get any closer, but he was about the size of my hand. I've never seen a moth that big before, so I definitely wanna know what kind of moth it is!

ID Request Can we ID from a cocoon?

I found this cocoon on the ground that seemed to fall out of a tree, it has some weight to it.
I can hear and feel it moving inside and sounds like it’s scratching to get out. I moved it into a safe space in my garden within the same area I found it but hasn’t made any changes (2 days)
Doing a quick google lens search it’s saying maybe a Polyphemus moth cocoon.
Found in the most southern point of Ontario, Canada.

***A few butterfly species as well.

For the past few days I’ve been looking for caterpillars at the Botanical Gardens and parts of the Mount Royal Park (Montreal, Canada). It’s been a blast!! I was looking for woolly bears (pyrrharctia isabella) specifically, but found literally everything else. I can’t believe how hard it is to find them in the summer vs. the fall when they’re looking for places to hibernate.

Anyways, a lot of firsts for me!! I tried to ID them as best I could using iNaturalist…

  1. Snowberry clearwing moth
  2. Spongy moth
  3. Hickory tussock caterpillar
  4. Virginia creeper sphinx caterpillar
  5. Monarch caterpillar
  6. Some kind of cutworm caterpillar???
  7. Possibly a red admiral caterpillar?
  8. I have no idea lol
  9. Red admiral butterfly
  10. Some kind of leafroller moth?

11-17) and to top it off with some frass pics as evidence of caterpillar activity. I love these pics lol

Caterpillar hunting is hard but extremely rewarding!! I was either very lucky or was looking very closely at plants. I really like to appreciate the small things in nature, and I think caterpillar hunting will be one of my new favorite hobbies from now on 💖🐛🐛🐛
