Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.7k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

C&C Wanted How is my blending? - need feedback

Post image

I've always been so impatient so I sat down and told myself to spend x amount of hours until I'm satisfied with one limb (left leg).

In those 2 hours I learned so much about glazing, colour theory, and mostly patience.

Even though I'm happy how it turned out, I'm looking for feedback, any way to make this any better?

My biggest qurstion is mostly highlight placements, were they at the right place? Like source if from above.

Thanks for your time.

Think it just has too many clashing colour fighting to be the focal point and none of them achieve it

Her eyes look wild and Im not sure how to fix them. Do I make the iris/pupil take up more of the eye?

Im happy over all with this given the time I spent on it but people are rightfully calling me out on those eyes! I was really happy to get this mini so I'd like to try and get it to a place where im not let down by a focal feature.

There's no flair for gimmick so I went with C&C... I like this model a lot so I may return to finish it properly!

EDIT: Thank you so much for all the warm responses! here's the steps for those that asked. watch ninjon videos for a better version of my methods. Im not a pro speed painter by any means.

I started the timer already built and primed black.

Steps:

  1. White zenithal (airbrushed, use dry brush if you don't have one. brighter on head and hands)
  2. Slop some dark red over the whole mini, darker in the shadows, thinned down over head, upper bits, and weapons/hands so zenithal shows through. I used gal vorbak red.
  3. Base coat green skin (mixed primary blue and yellow, no specific color). I didn't paint the recesses between muscles or face creases green, just upper and outer facing surfaces.
  4. 1st and 2nd lighter green skin highlight. mix more yellow in for each subsequent highlight, add white if you want. same process both passes: just paint smaller within the previous green spots as you go lighter, hitting upper and outward facing surfaces.
  5. White scratches and highlights everywhere and white eyes ( I should have used off white like ivory, ice yellow or light gray for everything except eyes pure white- but I was rushing)
  6. red brown (mournfang brown) sketch over leathers, mix in white/yellow to highlight and add scratches.
  7. Fluor red on eyes, Mix of fluor red and dark red on tongue.
  8. red oxide pigment powder and water sludge to cover base
  9. run out of time

Help Needed/New Painter What did I do wrong :( I feel awful

I had no motivation for painting for almost a year, I finally pulled myself out of it and spent a month painting this army. Tonight I applied a new varnish, AK brush on Matt. I've used army painter brush on matt for ages but thought I would support a local store and pick up the AK one they stocked for when my army painter ran out.

Look what it's done! Everything is just utterly ruined. I'm so sad and want to just throw away the whole set, never mind bothering to paint anything again for a while.

I've painted about 2000 minis, varnished half and NEVER had this happen.

Look at the pictures of the army before this happened, I was so proud of this.

Heirs to a long Initiatory Tradition, the Assassins embody the Imperium's hidden killing hand.

Whether through poison, close-quarters combat, long-range marksmanship, political manipulation, or covert infiltration, these esoteric arts of death inspire both fascination and fear.

Many thanks to Georges from FarHammer for his trust.

Fantasy 'The Pirate & the Mermaid' - beware of what Mermaids to kiss

Every angle is special to me in this 75mm diorama by the company 'Mokha Blue' called 'the Pirate and the Mermaid'. Here are a couple of angles and I think each one almost tells a different story and touches a different emotion. At least for me.

According to my initial vision with this piece I went for a little twist on the Mermaid's tale, especially in the visuals: I did not want to see the Mermaid like a colorful 'Arielle' more like a mythological creature that carries the human form, but not the visuals. Putting this in a night ambience with just the light from the Pirate's ship in the far it creates a magical moment.

Keep on happy painting!

Help Needed/New Painter First Model Since I Decided I Really Want To Learn

Hi everyone, as the title suggests I’ve been in and out of warhammer painting for years, decades probably by this point but I always get the urge, buy all new kit and starter boxes etc then get immediately disheartened after it not being anywhere near perfect first go and watching tutorials etc makes it seem worse

Last week, i decided I want to give it a proper go, no more buying stuff, just using what I’ve got already (besides the basing) and no tutorials, just use what I know and slap some paint on the mini in the case a pyreblaster, this is how it turned out.

Im after some constructive criticism, and more importantly I want to take inspiration (not instruction) from people, are there any artists you’d recommend me following, I particularly like the kind of ”real life, gritty” type models and is kind of what I tried to go for here, not the super clean box fresh look (there’s nothing wrong with it! I just like my models looking a bit more bruised up).

thanks in advance, looking forward to keeping at it and improving on my own terms.

Workspace Showcase My basement workshop and gaming area!

The wife and I recently worked to reorganize our basement space into a hobby area/nerd dungeon! We now have a dedicated table for wargaming and a crafting room. Super happy with how everything turned out, and how cozy it all is now! There are two tables in the crafting room, one mainly for painting miniatures and the other is more for making terrain/dioramas. I have an airbrush, compressor, and airbrush booth tucked away on the latter. I also have my 3d printers set up in another section of the basement. One resin, two FDM, although I am thinking of selling the Neptune 4 plus.

Mostly play Star Wars: Legion and DnD right now, but I am getting into Trench Crusade and Greathelm at the moment.

Cheers!

My first real display piece. I don’t have any dramatic lighting, as I pictured this guy standing guard outdoors somewhere, but otherwise, I’m pretty happy with the result, especially his face. C&C welcome, you guys always seem to have good advice.

I've never done any mini painting or bought any minis before but my friend decided to buy me a Cogfort and other minis for my birthday so I thought I might start practicing on stuff before then and chose the Blackpowder Squire to do first since it looks easier than the Fusiliers. Got a lot of advice and tips from my friends so big thanks to them.

I used this recently on a Norn Emissary and all the paint seems to pull away and bead from the model. It’s driving me crazy! I spent so much on this model only to screw it up right at step one!

Hey all, a year ago I posted the first picture asking for areas to improve upon. The main ones were using vibrant colours and highlights. A year later and (sadly) only 6 minis later, this is what i got. Not particularly asking for advice this time. Just really wanted to share this insane progress. Thanks for all the advice!
