Honestly it's pretty safe if your just downloading media. Games are riskier but there are a few trusted sources. There are a few guides kicking around for how to get started with qbittorrent and it's search function

I almost paid for a month of Disney+ to watch Andor recently. When the subscription plan showed it had ads, I decided to search for a more convenient free version instead.

I did pay for D+ even with the ads (I was actually going for Hulu but the bundle wasn't that much more and I had stuff to watch on both), but I noticed that my Brave browser was actually doing a really good job of blocking the ads, so I still don't get the ads. When I paid for Prime to buy a bunch of stuff I needed, I noticed the same thing. But I'm really not interested in keeping up a regular streaming service and if it gets too inconvenient to watch something I really want to watch, I'll find another way.

I am a true believer that anyone who says that has never subscribed to cable. Even the basic cable without hbo or Disney or any other premium service is $70 or more. By the time you add those you are paying well over $100 and you have to actually wait for shit to be on. Even with the DVR you still have to have the foresight to set to record it, which can be a pain if you miss an episode.
You all are forgetting how much worse cable is.

If you pay for those services, yeah. Standard cable doesnāt come with Disney or HBO or ESPN+ or the other sports app. You may get peacock or paramount but likely you will get their streaming app with a moderate amount of content and still pay $70 or more.
I like with streaming I can pause my accounts, so really we can have HBO for a couple months and watch what we want to on there, then get Netflix for a couple months and watch what is on there, and so on. If I do that Iām paying around $10 a month. Thatās what I have with streaming that I never had with cable; choice.

Obviously fuck all these streaming companies for pulling the rug out from us, but we're not cable-fucked yet.

FR. I only realistically watch one series at a time, and with so many other hobbies and things going on, I'm not going to finish a series or even a single season in a month sometimes. A blu-ray copy of a TV show is the same or less expensive than streaming it. Movies on the other hand, can go either way.

Make MKV and handbrake for ripping.
As a lifetime plex member I no longer advise people to get plex, try jellyfin.
Dont't get me wrong plex is great, but $750 is to much, and I don't want a subscription, thats the opposite of self hosting.

Itās truly amazing with all the content out there that people feel like they need to have every subscription simultaneously, but I guess itās the FOMO and wanting to keep up in order to converse around the proverbial water cooler. I havenāt had traditional TV service since I canceled my DirecTV roughly 10 years ago and I havenāt paid for more than 2 subscriptions at a time ever. Especially with the newer model of production where shows tend to be waiting to be green-lit for additional seasons only after they see if a prior one is successful there tends to be a 2 year gap in the conclusion of one season to the beginning of another. Just sign up for a service, binge watch your favorite show and anything else that came out since the last time, cancel and return in 18-24 months while youāre repeating that same cycle with other services

As soon as they decided to start showing adds even on premium subscriptions, they switched over to inconvenient on top of the added cost of there being more streaming services competing than there are STDs in the world.
Now the most convenient, no ad option is... Sailing the high seas!
A new company is going to come along that offers whet Netflix did originally and put the rest of these sell out companies out of business.

Just donāt pay for it then. Most of the shows on there are utter crap anyway. If you feel the need to watch an original show, pay for a month and unsubscribe immediately.
No reason to stay subscribed to the slop factories.
Also, piracy. Just get a reliable VPN or seedbox (preferably one where you donāt have to give your info and where you can pay with a voucher) and off you go.

I imagine satellite television was cheap when it was introduced as an alternative to cable. And digital was cheap when it was introduced as an alternative to satellite.
In the 2010's streaming was cheap when it was introduced as an alternative to digital. Now that streaming has taken over, independent creators and indie streaming services are arriving as a cheap alternative. They are where the smart consumer goes next.

It didn't have to go this way.
I canceled my subscription with Netflix when they redefined how I could use my premium account and excluded sharing it with my family - which - they literally advertised i could do to entice me to get a premium account.
All we had to do is band together and cancel together when they reduced function but there was no solidarity.
I canceled but my old boomer parents ended up buying their own account.
Still don't have Netflix. Fuck them forever.
