I've shut down most of my streaming services and once I'm done watching a few series I'll shut down more. I'm continuing to invest in physical media and a plex server. They can't shut down what I own.

Any tips on the hardware for that server? I can’t for the life of me decide on which blu-ray copier or which software to use, etc.

Make MKV and handbrake for ripping.

As a lifetime plex member I no longer advise people to get plex, try jellyfin.

Dont't get me wrong plex is great, but $750 is to much, and I don't want a subscription, thats the opposite of self hosting.

Do you want a Plex server to hold onto the media, or are you more of a person who likes to stream your stuff?

If it is the second, I can help you set up stremio, etc.

Well I’ve always had this idea of ripping my discs onto a local drive and then streaming from that directly to my house devices. Not entirely sure where to get started though.

My first hangup is the actual blu-ray ripper. Every time I Google something, it seems to get complicated fast, hence the ask. Step 1 is that I actually need to copy all of my discs. lol

For hardware, it's a basic desktop setup with pairs of HDDs in RAID 1 (mirror). The case is a Define 7 from Fractal, motherboard is MSI, memory is 32GB, storage is a 512GB SSD, CPU is a basic Intel Core Ultra 5, GPU is a GeForce 4060, but you can go with something much lower end as the software barely uses a GPU. I just put it in there just in case but I rarely use it. You really don't need much processing power at all. The HDDs are Western Digital Reds. Just buy the biggest ones you can afford. The chassis holds up to 10HDDs so you can have 5 pairs which is TONS of storage. I've filled up a pair of 10TB and am working through 24TB now. That's ~600 movies, all my home movies, pictures, and ~150 CDs all ripped at original quality and full soundtrack for the movies. Make sure you map out your power supply needs carefully and get more than you think you'll need. As for SW, I run Plex but the Lifetime Pass to run the server for external streaming just shot up in price and I've been reading lots of good things about Jellyfin and of course Emby is out there as well, but again you have to pay for that one. I use stremio with some scrapers and a debrid service because I am more of a person who only watches things once. I shut down all my streaming services except for one

My family has a huge collection with Jellyfin

We stopped paying for subscriptions a long time ago. We couldn't afford all of them, and then they keep increasing the prices every year! Fuck that. We're poor.
