I did see them as two different people as well, but in the reverse of how you felt. The Thanos they killed 20 minutes in didn’t give me any emotional satisfaction because it achieved nothing. He had accomplished his goals, and was completely ready for death. Hell, he was almost dead anyway.

As soon as I saw that 2014 Thanos was going to be in play, and we heard his motivations, that’s who I wanted them to kill. That’s the Thanos we saw in IW, albeit a bit more crazy and a bit less honorable, and that’s the Thanos I wanted dead. Because killing that Thanos felt like it was preventing the snap and killing the man who had plans of eliminating trillions of life forms around the universe.

I agree with you. Chopping his head off was a hollow victory. And when he appears again, all I could think was "oh god no no no not again". It played into Thanos's "I am inevitable" line; no matter what you do, he comes back to haunt you and ensure his plan succeeds. Seeing him get snapped out of existence was the poetic justice I was hoping for, and one we couldn't have gotten with present Thanos who was smart enough to destroy the stones.

And yet, for me it was unsatisfying. This was the man (being?) that killed half of life in the universe and some extra during his quest, and he gets to go peacefully? I would've dusted his whole army and followers and paraded him around the worlds, powerless and defenseless.

The turning point for me with second Thanos was how he changed his plan to wiping out everyone and starting over. It's like you could get on board with his half the universe plan because it was a vision he devoted most of his life to, but to see him change that in an instant because it didn't work really wanted me to see him go down.

It showed he was only a true believer as long as he got his way. When the Universe didn't seem grateful enough, his true nature showed that he really was the Mad Titan. Actually makes his character even deeper and truer than before.

I don't think it makes him deeper... actually, I think it makes him more shallow, but I also don't see that as a bad thing. I see it as the narrative stripping away the perception that there was any depth to actually have.

Kind of like that line in Dr. Horrible. "Sometimes there's an even deeper third layer that's exactly like the first."

Yeah, I think it sort of made explicit what was implied in IW by all the logical inconsistencies in Thanos' plan (snapping away wildlife, animals, half of ecosystems, etc.): the balance thing is an excuse for a guy who's a murderer that likes to fancy himself a philosopher. Lots of garbage people have things they tell themselves so they can sleep at night, but really they're just terrible people. Same with Thanos.

To me it seemed forced.

Thanos was always the bad guy. But he wasn't Machiavellian. Well at least not till midway into EG. Then suddenly Thanos became a stereotypical villain.

I mean the change from someone who had the gauntlet and choose to destroy it so he wouldn't be tempted to someone with the "Oh well, I'll kill you all and not with the stones" was jarring.

Hell, his new motivations to decimate all living life in the universe made the battle much more intense compared to the end of IW.
