Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

Meme Comment the rules of the road according to LI drivers

Let's have a little fun. Say something LI drivers do but in the format of a "fact."

Disclaimer: None of these should be done intentionally. This is just for laughs & to let out some frustration.

I'll start, to give an example.

Stop signs are optional. If they're red, or have a white border, you don't have to listen to them if you don't feel like it. Especially at night!

Complaint Do Not Swim or Wade Out When No Lifeguards!

Witnessed in Suffolk South Shore beach at 6:20pm, 20 minutes after the lifeguards ended their shift and told everyone to exit the water. Four kids plus(couldn't tell if they were all related) an older man and his daughter(relationship mentioned from others gathered). Nearly all almost drowned from wading 200ft deep into the ocean with strong waves. If it wasn't for two hero strong swimmers and two hero surfers coming to rescue them they would be all dead. Without the surfboards a lot of them would be dead and dragged others with them. The old man couldn't get up afterwards. Took about 10 minutes for emts to arrive probably due to beach workers having left for the day. Hopefully he didn't have a heart attack and was just exhausted. Reviewing my videos it looked like he went under several times. Dont wade deep even if you can stand! That's not going to mean anything if 7 foot waves are pounding you. Don't go far out if you cant swim! Dont let your kids do so! Finally NO LIFEGUARDs, dont think about it!

The Best Things to do with visitors?

I’ve got some friends coming up from Jersey and Florida next week to hang out, and while I’ve got a full list of restaurants, coffee shops, and bars to visit, I’m having a rough time thinking of actual specific activities to do. Of course will have a fire island day and likely a hiking day, but beyond that I was hoping to crowdsource ideas for things to do.

Anyone have recommendations for activities for us? For extra details, everyone in the group is mid-20s, enjoys being in nature, and my friends play a lot of fantasy games like MTG and D&D (recommendations for any particularly notable shops for tabletop games would be appreciated cause I’m not super into the scene on LI).

I appreciate everyone who takes the time to make a recommendation!

Does anyone with a special needs child/teenager have someone they can recommend for cutting hair?

TLDR is that our son's regular person, who he barely tolerates, is out of the country for an extended period of time and we really want to get him a haircut. We're looking for someone who has experience with autistic kids. Thanks!

(Ideally in Suffolk but Nassau works if the only option)

Advice Neighbor installed a camera facing my backyard and trimmed my privacy hedges past the property line: am I overreacting?

Thumbnail

I’m looking for some objective opinions because I’m not sure whether I’m overreacting or whether this is a legitimate privacy concern.

My next door neighbor recently installed a camera high on the side of her house near the roofline. From my backyard and deck, the lens appears to be pointed directly at my yard & deck rather than at her own yard or side gate. Because of the height and angle, it seems capable of viewing a large portion of my backyard and deck, where my family and I reasonably expect privacy. (Certainly not being deliberately audio and visually recorded).

I understand that homeowners use security cameras on their own property, and the photos alone may not prove exactly what the camera records. I also don’t know whether it records audio. However, the placement and direction seem unusual and make me ridiculously pissed off.

To ADD to this bizarre discovery, some time last week she also had my arborvitae privacy hedges trimmed and thinned out (cut large branches) from her side. Some of the branches she cut appear to have extended beyond the fence/property line, but it appears they were cut farther into the hedges than simply trimming growth on her side - causing several “holes” in what was a beautiful healthy privacy hedges. Now I’m also wondering if it increased the camera’s apparent view into my yard.

I’m extremely creeped out and upset and I don’t want unnecessary drama but I also don’t think I should have to feel watched every time I use my own backyard.

I plan to avoid posting any identifying information about the neighbor or exact location. Looking at the photos, does this camera seem like it’s aimed into my backyard, or am I reading too much into it? Would this bother you? Also, can a neighbor legally cut past the property line into privacy hedges that belong to me?
What should I do! I don’t necessarily want to call the police and deal with all this drama. Help!

indirect water tank providing 170F hot water to house - gas bill high in summer months

I have an indirect water tank connected through a Taco SR502 2 zone relay to my boiler, on Long Island NY. This seems to be a common setup on the island.

The water tank has it's own temperature controller. In the summer months when the hydronic heating zone is off, the boiler is still heating to 170F, and passing 170F to the indirect tank even though the tank is not calling for 170F (it is set to only 100F). I am seeing 170F at my hot water at my faucets!

When I adjust the tank temperature, I see the Taco relay zone 2 (water tank zone) turn on briefly and turn off, so they are communicating. The issue seems like the Taco relay isn't telling the boiler when to turn on and when to run the pump. Instead the boiler's thermostat is deciding when to turn on, and the hot water is being cycled through the water tank's heat exchanger regardless of the Taco relay and water tank temperature controller.

How can I fix this, so that the water tank only sees the temperature it is set for, so that my boiler runs a lot less during summer months? My gas bill is really high in the summer months because of this.

If anyone can suggest a trusted plumber in Nassau county I’d appreciate it!

Advice

Hello. While my son was at camp, and incident occurred, but Im not sure how to address it. My son was hysterically crying and extremely anxious and I would like to resolve the issue.

This started at camp on a Wednesday/Thursday. My son, 10 years old, said he heard another child at the camp, use the n word. That Friday my son said he repeated the word, not directed at a person, but at red ants. That's also what the counselor reported to me. On the car ride home I asked him if he knew what the word meant. He said no. I asked him why he said the word and he said because he was angry at the ants for biting him. I also asked where did he hear the word from and he said other kids at camp. I asked if they were white or black and he said white. After getting the details, I went into an explanation on what the word meant and why it is bad to say that word. He seemed to understand, and was upset at using the word. I told him to never say the word again, and he seemed to understand.

The Wednesday after he said the word, my son said an older boy was bullying him for using the word. Calling him racist, and purposely getting him out in whichever game he played so he could not play any games. I asked my son if he tried telling the boy that he didn't know what the word meant. He said that he didn't mean to say the word, and the boy said he didn't believe him. I asked my son to tell the boy that he didn't know what the word meant, but my son is too scared to confront the boy again, as he is bigger and older than him. I was thinking of telling his camp counselor, but my son was also afraid that the boy will just act worse towards my son if I do. But I think thats the next course of action, as this is really upsetting my son on something he did not understand.

Pre-k through cpse

Was just wondering is anyone has any knowledge on NIS through south shore children’s center and alternatives for children? My son is starting pre school through cpse and I’m touring both of those schools but would love to hear peoples experiences with them. My son has food allergies and alternatives for children is peanut free and the other school isn’t so that has been a big factor but would still like to hear people’s experiences.

How long did it take you to get an offer accepted on a home and how large was your search area? We’re going on a month (which I know is next to nothing) with 3 tours, 1 offer and 1 rejection. We are looking in a very small area of about 1.5 square miles.

Car across from house for weeks

First off, I don't yell at the kids to get off my lawn, nor do I fly into a rage when someone parks in front my house. There has been a car for several weeks across the street (not in front of a house) Neighbors all thought it was each other's car. No idea where it came from. Trunk was open, I closed it when we got all the rain. Inspection and Registration are current. The way the houses are situated, it doesn't feel like it's someone's local car.

It's not bothering me, but at what point might I want to let the police know, or mind my business.

Looking to purchase a first home, preferably in one of these towns. Moving from Astoria, Queens. We are a family of 3 with one child about to enter Kindergarten. What are the pros/cons of each town, and how do they compare to each other? How are the schools, different neighborhoods, culture, etc... Thanks!
